Speaking on the occasion, Dr Satya Pal Singh, Inspector General of Police, Konkan range, described terrorism as an iceberg, whose only 1/10th part is visible. âIts dangerous mass remains hidden beneath the surface. Similarly, the destructive aspect of terrorism is revealed only when the terror is let loose on earth killing hundreds of innocent peoples. When the terrorist mind unleashes its fury of destruction, the humanity cowers under its impact,â he said. He further said no serious efforts are being made to root out terrorism from the country. âArresting and punishing terrorists is not enough to eradicate terrorism. As long as the terrorist mindset remains, the world will continue to suffer,â he added. He asked if politicians with different political ideologies can come together to form government on the basis of common minimum programmers, why can leaders of various religious faiths not come together and adopt a common minimum programme to wipe out terrorism? Noted journalist Shri Muzaffar Hussain said Muslims should express their sense of gratitude to Hindustan, as it was here that the first translation of the Koran was published by Pandit Naval Kishore in Lucknow. As long as Muslims do not identify themselves with local Indian languages, they will not be able to effectively communicate their grievances to the countrymen. Those who believe Urdu as their mother tongue do not know that Urdu is the language, which was spoken and nurtured by Munshi Prem Chand, Pandit Brij Narayan and Pandit Ratan Sharshar. He exhorted Muslims to give up their insistence on identifying themselves with Arabic and Urdu as their languages and should accept local languages of their state as their own. He said if in the school textbooks, the knowledge of Hinduism and Islam is given to the students in the local languages, there will be no place for antipathy and hatred in the younger generation. Shri Riyazudin Moosa Sheikh, former education inspector, presided over the seminar. http://www.organiser.org/dynamic/modules.p...pid=150&page=34 -------------------------------------------------------------------- All out conversion to Hindu Dharma would be better, by other than that, well, OK, this is a step in the right direction. UK refuses relief to Somnath Chatterjee NEW DELHI: Speaker Somnath Chatterjee is winning applause in political circles around the country for standing up to Britain. Chatterjee has decided to call off his trip to the UK because British authorities refused to honour the constitutional dignity of his position. The attack to the constitutional authority comes by way of complying with the strict rules and regulations of airport security, in place since the 911 attacks in the US and intelligence reports of terrorist threat to Heathrow. The British authorities are unwilling to allow the speaker of Indian parliament without the normal security drill which all VIPs as well as ordinary travellers follow. --------- Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 10-10-2008 No more candle-light vigils in Delhi NEW DELHI: People planning candle light vigils in the national capital to highlight their cause will now have to think of another mode of protest as Delhi Police today decided to prohibit processions carrying flames. City Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal issued an order in this regard which prohibits the carrying of "torch carrying live flames or live fire candles or live fire in any form in processions, rallies and functions" in the capital. ------ Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 10-11-2008 Now Shame of India will not allow peacefull protest, they like revolution, street fights, riots., that is how Marxist minds work. Most students â both present and former â and teachers said on Wednesday that Stephenâs has had a history of prodding its pupils to be involved in classroom by asking more questions. The comment led the usually quiet Vijay Tankha, a faculty in the Department of Philosophy and Dean (Academics), to take a dig at the AICC general secretary. He said the Amethi MP might have asked too many questions in the wrong class. âA history class is quite crowded, so he may have been asked to bring his questions to the tutorial or talk to the teacher after class instead of asking them during the lecture. âWe should probably check to see how many tutorials he attended in his brief stint in college.â Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 10-30-2008 Turning off the tap --- the Home Ministry has also banned 44 organisations, from receiving funds for life. Later, the Vice-Chancellor was summoned by the Pricipal Secretary to the Governor and an explanation sought from him over the incident. V-C Suri had, in a press statement earlier, claimed no permission was sought for Gandhi's programme. The incident had triggered a political furore with political parties across the spectrum criticising the prevention of Gandhi from addressing the university students. Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 11-08-2008 a new secular spokesperson emerges, someone who lives in la la land 'It's too late to contain Raj Thackeray' ----- Coming to the Sangh Parivar, a subject that you have been dealing with closely, do you think that a ban on Bajrang Dal would be the answer for a more peaceful society? Bans do not work. According to me the Bajrang Dal and the Students Islamic Movement of India are in the same league as they both fight for their ideologies. A ban is a very minor issue. According to me, the perpetrators of violence should be put behind bars. There are allegations that right-wing Hindu activists are involved in acts of terror. What are your views? Yes there are reports of their involvement in acts of terror. The matter should be probed thoroughly. Muslims are being blamed for every act of terror. What we need is concrete proof and not extractions of confessions under torture. You have written a lot about the death sentence to Afzal Guru (accused in the Parliament attack case). Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress have been at loggerheads over hanging him. What do you think ought to be done? The National Democratic Alliance should not forget that Afzal's mercy petition was pending before the President during their regime. They had not acted upon it at that time. Why are they blaming this government now? In my view I think Afzal Guru should be awarded a life sentence. The death penalty is not the answer here. But is it fair? The Supreme Court has held a man guilty for an attack on the symbol of democracy -- the Indian Parliament and politicians from Jammu and Kashmir [Images] say that the state will burn if he is hanged. How can they hold the country ransom? I see a valid point that was made by the politicians from Jammu and Kashmir regarding this issue. In 1983, Maqbool Bhat was hanged in the valley and matters took an ugly turn. Regarding Afzal Guru they were just sounding a caution and it was not a threat. There is a need to win over the hearts of the people in the valley. What do you make of the Sangh Parivar's allegations regarding forcible conversions? I feel that this propaganda is wrong although I must add that there are stray cases. But the answer would lie in the statistics of 1971 and 2001 census. The 1971 census showed that there were 2.6 crore Christians in India and the 2001 census says that there were 2.16 crore. This is an indication that the population has fallen and there are no mass conversions as is being alleged. Then why is the Sangh Parivar on a rampage in Orissa? We have been looking at Orissa closely and I must say that the Sangh Parivar is trying to suppress the voice of the Adivasis. Christian missionaries are involved in imparting education to the Adivasis and the Sangh Parivar is worried that the Adivasis may become empowered which in turn will affect their vote banks. So according to you all Christian missionaries are saints and they are only bothered about empowering the oppressed classes in society. I am not saying that all missionaries are saints. There are instances where they behave in an aggressive manner. But to generalise is not correct. but he himself can indulge in generalisations Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 11-16-2008 Players' presence at charity match raises eyebrows The presence of three members of India's one-day squad - the captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and RP Singh - at a private function in a Maharashtra town on Saturday has raised eyebrows over its clear departure from practice. The three cricketers attended, with the permission of the BCCI, the inauguration of a private cricket academy in Bhandara while the rest of the squad was in Indore for the second ODI in the series against England. There were also concerns over their security. PTI reported the cricketers played with locals, resulting in crowd surges. The academy is named after the father of union civil aviation minister Praful Patel, who belongs to the same political party as Sharad Pawar, the former BCCI president. -- "There is nothing wrong in attending such a programme," Rajiv Shukla, MSD mobbed Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and two of his teammates managed to come out unscathed from a near stampede situation after an exhibition match in a remote town of Maharashtra, where they had gone to inaugurate a cricket academy. Hundreds of local fans, who gathered to have a glimpse of their heroes, rushed on to the ground posing a serious security hazard for the players and raising questions whether adequate security was in place. Dhoni and his two pacers â Zaheer Khan and RP Singh â went to Bhandara in Maharashtra to inaugurate the academy, named after Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patelâs father. --- âThere is nothing wrong to attend such a programme. It was for a charitable cause. They had taken prior permission and enough security measures were in place,â BCCI Finance Committee chairman Rajiv Shukla said. Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 11-19-2008 Operation Pacify Paswan Calcutta, Nov. 18: Two hundred cops in and around a five-star hotel, 400 uniformed personnel elsewhere, one fire engine and several uprooted bushes seem to have helped Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee smooth some ruffled feathers of Ram Vilas Paswan. Security usually seen in Maoist-infested zones, not in ritzy hotels, greeted the Union steel minister back to Bengal today, 16 days after a landmine struck Paswanâs convoy and made him express incredulity at the chief ministerâs decision to leave early then. Over 200 plainclothesmen and uniformed personnel were posted in the vicinity of the venue for an event where deals for coal block development and iron ore supply were struck . Police sources said the headcount was more than that required for even the Z-plus category. Shrubs and bushes behind the hotel, bordering the Salt Lake Stadium ground, were cleared, apparently to avoid a repeat of the November 2 blast that was triggered by using a long wire which snaked undetected across a paddy field. A fire engine was stationed on the hotel premises, a precautionary measure usually taken when the chief minister attends open-air events. Along with the hardware came the chief ministerâs fulsome praise for Paswan. âThis (the coal and ore pacts) was not possible without Paswan. I thank him on behalf of all of you. Whenever we were in trouble, we went to him. He has almost cleared the chemical hub (in Nayachar),â Bhattacharjee said. --------- Miscellaneous news and discussion - 2 - Guest - 11-19-2008 Pawar balm for riot-hit people Bhubaneswar, Nov. 18: A three-member ministerial team, headed by Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, today visited Kandhamal to make an on-the-spot assessment. The team flew from Bhubaneswar in the morning and landed at Raikia, one of the worst affected areas of violence, and visited a relief camp set up at St Catherine Girlsâ High School. They interacted with the campâs guests for an hour. Later, the team visited the kanyashram at Jalespeta, where Laxmananda Saraswati and four of his associates were murdered on the night of August 23. The team spoke to Chaini and Hindu Jagaran Samukhya president and retired IPS officer, Ashok Sahu, who explained the sequence of events that lead to the murder. The team also accepted a memorandum from the organisations. Because of this, many temples are in penury and donât have adequate funds though they own land worth crores of rupees. None of the temples have proper land records and this has made it easier for politicians and influential persons to encroach upon them. The Andhra Pradesh Temple Lands Protection Committee said that over one lakh acres of land had been grabbed by locals, political leaders and other land grabbers. Many temples will be able to find funds for renovation only if the lands are given back to them. "However, the state government is not keen on the protection of temple lands," said Mr N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, convenor of the committee. "Amenities can be provided to pilgrims only when the properties and funds of temples are maintained with care." However, the endowments department said it had been giving top priority to the protection of temple lands by creating three special tribunals. The department is verifying all the records. "At present, the department controls 4.19 lakh acres of temple lands," said Mr Sundara Kumar, the endowments commissioner. "We are planning to purchase agricultural lands while disposing of commercial lands. This will give the temples more immovable properties and revenue generation will also become easy." Mr K.V.S.R.N. Acharyulu, the secretary of the Archaka and Employees Welfare Trust, said that offerings of devotees were the only source of funds for small temples at present. "We have asked the government to focus on generating more revenue through non performing assets," he said. "It will also help archakas get a fixed income."
