Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 09-19-2012 Muslims have never agreed that partition put an end to this problem. As I have mentioned in a recent article, Mr Hasan Surhawardy, Chief Minister of undivided Bengal, had pointed out in 1946 that, "Pakistan is not our last demand". In his letter written after the partition to Choudhary Khaliquzzaman, Mr Surhawardy had propounded the. idea of a Muslim majority area in India. It is without significance that the post-independence trend of Muslim politics in India has followed the direction laid down by Mr Jinnah and Mr Surhawardy. Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 09-19-2012 'Cow-slaughter in India is a great Islamic practice,' (said) Mujaddid Alaf Saani II. This was his farsightedness that he described cow-slaughter in India as a great Islamic practice. It may not be so in other places. But it is definitely a great Islamic act in India because 'the cow is worshipped in India.' These words of exhortation are from Ali Mian's stirring address to a congregation of Indian and Pakistani Muslims at Jeddah on April 3, 1986. Ali Mian's logic is simple: Since the cow is sacred to millions to Indians, indeed since the cow is worshipped by the Hindus who form the majority community in India, Muslims must slaughter the cow. The letter says Salam Azad, said to have been shortlisted as a possible candidate for the post, ââ¬Åis known for his blasphemous writingsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ and his appointment will be against the public interest and the interest of Bangladesh. ââ¬ÅHe (Azad) in his numerous writings has brought several blasphemous charges against the saviour of humanity. Being Muslims, these views are totally unacceptable. Vanga Matt, Salam Azadââ¬â¢s book published from Calcutta, is full of false accusations, slander and defamation against the Holy Prophet of Islam,ââ¬Â the letter says. The signatories to the letter include Usman Ghani, former head of the department (Islamic History) of Calcutta University, Abdur Rauf, editor of literary journal Chaturanga, and five others, including a prominent cleric. Although the letter does not mention Taslima Nasreen, the leaders fear that Azad could end up being a male version of the controversial Bangladeshi writer. Last month, violence had erupted in Karnataka after the Kannada translation of an article purportedly written by Taslima was published in some local dailies. The Muslim leaders have accepted in their letter that officially they have no say in who Dhaka picks, but voiced fears that Azadââ¬â¢s appointment could hurt bilateral relations, which have improved in Hasinaââ¬â¢s tenure. The leaders have alleged that Azad in his other books - such as Chukti Uttar Prabatta Chatagram, Shasti Bahini Shanti Chukti, Ethnic Cleansing, Bangladeshe Bippono Sonkha Loghu, Why Hindus Left Bangladesh - claims that the minorities (Hindus) in Bangladesh have gone through unspeakable torture, injustice, ethnic cleansing and execution at the hands of the military and citizens alike. But unbiased sources, the leaders have pointed out in the letter, have clarified the charges of such atrocities are baseless. The letter concludes by urging the Prime Minister Hasina to ââ¬Åkindly reconsider the appointment and take appropriate measuresââ¬Â. -- So here we have a BD muslim author Salam Azad, documenting the ethnic cleansing of Hindus and West Bengal muslims oppose him Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 10-23-2012 Ahmer ââ¬Â¢ an hour ago The land of the Holy places was a refuge for every Muslim. Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 12-24-2012 20th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition observed in Saudi Arabia Submitted by admin4 on 24 December 2012 - 9:27pm Indian Muslim Muslim World News By TCN News, Dammam, Saudi Arabia: On December 6, 2012, India Fraternity Forum (Dammam) organized a public program as part of the awareness campaign to mark the 20th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition with slogan ââ¬ÅLest we forget Babri Masjid,ââ¬Â at Al-Nahda club auditorium - Rakka, situated in Dammam-Khobar highway. The program also celebrated the diversity of Indian Muslims with speeches in Urdu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. The program presided by Br. Moosa Kutty (Kerala) began with the recitation of the holy Quran by brother Sibagatullah (UP). Brother Mohammed Waheed (Andhra Pradesh) delivered an introductory speech in Urdu and he explained the purpose of the event. Br Amer (UP) described how Indian courts practice a clear discriminations among various communities, especially on Indian Muslims, and emphasized need for all Indians to fight back and recover the Masjid. This was followed by a speech by Bro. Saleem (Karnataka) who explained the huge crowd how Indian Muslims should get united and empowered, and also he insisted that now Muslims should start thinking differently on ââ¬Åpositive approachââ¬Â than Brother Nazar (Kerala) stated the historical facts behind Babri Masjid. He reminded the major role of Muslims during the freedom struggle against British monarchy. Tamil speaker, Jahangir Aroosi said that Babri Masjid was demolished based on mere a historical myth of Ram, a Hindu God. He asked ââ¬Åthere are plenty of temples in the name of Ram in Ayodhya now. Does this mean Ram was born in multiple locations?ââ¬Â Brother Faisel in his conclusion speech pledged that this message will endlessly be forwarded to the generations ahead. He reiterated that ââ¬Åweââ¬â¢ll never forget Babri Masjid and ever let other not forget, until its reconstruction at the same spot, despite it costs anything. Bro. Abdullah Ali presented the vote of thanks. The organizers had arranged a signature on Canvass campaign at the end of the event. A huge paper scroll with memorable pictures of Babri Masjid with various slogans was mounted on the side walls of the event hall. All the participants registered their feelings and emotions on Babri Masjid in the signature scroll. It was an overwhelming experience for everyone when they expressed their thoughts in it. There were stalls displaying books, CDs in different Indian languages to remind the memories of Babri Masjid. Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 12-28-2012 Managed peace in J&K The year 2012 is being touted as a ââ¬Åyear of peaceââ¬Â because 12.5 lakh tourists and 6.5 lakh Amarnath yatris visited the state during this year. But the fact is that this ââ¬Åpeaceââ¬Â is managed by state oppression. Thousands of youths are in jails on frivolous charges. Every now and then undeclared curfew is clamped on various areas. On several Fridays this year, prayers were not allowed in the Jama Masjid of Srinagar. Muharram processions were also not allowed this year. Separatist leaders like Mir Waiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik and Shabbir Shah etc were frequently arrested during this year. Another separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, remains under perpetual house arrest and has not been allowed to offer Friday prayers during the last three years. In spite of the assurances of Chief Minister Umar Abdullah, AFSPA remains in force. A total of 150 persons are in jails under the draconian Public Safety Act and 840 political prisoners remain incarcerated. AIMMM calls upon the Union government to take a bold step to talk to the separatists. A remarkable gesture will be to lift AFPSA which has no relevance now in view of the official statements that only a few hundred militants remain in J&K. Amarnath Trust AIMMM shares the uneasiness of the Kashmiri brothers over the increasing activities and infrastructure building by J&Kââ¬â¢s Amarnath Trust. A new fait accompli is being attempted at the expense of the areaââ¬â¢s environment and peopleââ¬â¢s sentiments. The ever-growing number of pilgrims to Amarnath, from a few thousand in pre-1990 days to around six lakh this year, is disastrous to the areaââ¬â¢s fragile ecology as well as it sends a political message to the Valleyââ¬â¢s Muslim majority. The state government should stop any measures to build permanent infrastructure on the Amarnath route and should limit the visitors to what the areaââ¬â¢s ecology permits. Moreover, Kashmiri Pandits should be appointed on the Amarnath Trust and no land should allotted to it as it will lead to permanent infrastructure Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 01-08-2013 India Today The storm over the incendiary speech of Akbaruddin Owaisi in Hyderabad which almost took us back to the age of medieval vandalism is yet to die down. Almost a week after the hate speech calling Muslims to teach a lesson to Hindus in the most violent language the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader has no sense of regret. Rather he was greeted with unabashed gusto and fervour on his return from UK where he headed soon after his blood curdling oratory. Sparks followed over the speech as the leader of a secular party having alliance with the BJP put his foot in the mouth saying that the RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat and Owaisi are two sides of the same coin, thus taking us to new depths of minority appeasement. Owaisi's speech was a typically ultra-Wahabi, a religious creed that envisions the spread of Islam to the entire world at the expense of other religions, condemns moderate Muslims wanting to reach out to the Almighty through the intercession of a Muslim saint or a Guru , advocating instead direct dialling to Allah, and sees Osama Bin Laden as a hero. Interestingly, Owaisi spoke in keeping with the radical Islamic image of AIMIM, a party floated at the behest of the Nizam of Hyderabad before independence that actively supported the formation of Pakistan. But those who have followed the footsteps of ultra Wahhabis aren't surprised. Take, for example, the speech a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board delivered at a hall in Ahmedabad in 2006 at the behest of a local Muslim religious organisation. I was present on the occasion and that speech will for ever be embedded in my mind as it exposed the ultra-Wahabi vision of an 'Islamic India'. I shall call the leader 'Inzimam Ibrahim' here instead of taking his true name for obvious reasons. Ibrahim first began by the questioning the Muslim clergy present on the occasion as to why Islam despite having been in India for centuries had not been able to convert the entire country. He asked with aggression : "Why Islam couldn't take into its fold the lakhs and crores of Dalits, the Pidits (oppressed) and the lower classes who have been waiting to walk into the Islamic fold for centuries and that what exactly went wrong with the Islamic strategy. " After dwelling on the failures of the guardians of Islam in India to convert the entire country Ibrahim deftly changed his tune by taking inspiration from Pakistani Muslims. He said a set of Pakistani Muslims showed him the other side of the same story when they complimented him as an Indian Muslim for the wonderful job that they (Indian Muslims) had done of furthering the Islamic cause in India as against the hopeless situation they had found themselves when Pakistan was found and they were left alone and abandoned in divided India. Then he proceeded further revealing that the Pakistan Muslims indeed made him realise that Indian Muslims had after all not done too bad a job since Independence. Finally Ibrahim went on to say triumphantly: "Indeed we have crossed new frontiers. Today none can become a Chief Minister in Uttar Pardesh without Muslim support. In Assam the situation is still better for us. This is simply unimaginable when compared with crestfallen shape of the Indian Muslims on the day of partition ". Here comes the main point. Those from the majority community and even from amongst the moderate sections of the minorities who know the true independence struggle history as to what actually happened during country's traumatic partition must be appalled at the utterances of the Owaisis and the Ibrahims. It is known that in a short span following partition a vast majority of Hindus of the then West Pakistan and parts of Sindh were ethnically cleansed by Islamic zealots through a series of riots and forced to flee to India. Today's Delhi comprises mainly of that ill-fated lot of Pakistani Hindus. Later when violent reaction from common Hindus started against local Muslims in India Mahatma Gandh , Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel brought it under control on the plea that Indians can't go back to an age of medieval vandalism. So, what the Indian Muslims suffered at the hands of reactive and infuriated Hindus and Sikhs except in West or Indian Punjab was very negligible as compared to the uprooting and trauma that lakhs of Pakistani Hindus suffered as a whole. So, a feeling of betrayal is bound to be felt by a vast section of the majority in India at the utterances of the likes of Owaisi and Ibrahims. And this sense of betrayal could be in greater degree in those who have read a book titled : "The sole Spokesman : Jinnah, the Muslim League and the demand for Pakistan. It was written in 1994 by Pakistani-American historian Ayesha Jalal who has taught history in many American universities including Harvard and has been a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. In this book Jalal says that over 84 per cent of the total Muslims who voted in the Central Assembly election of undivided India in 1946 (which is just one year before partition) caste their votes for the Muslim League and less than three per cent for the Indian National Congress. The remaining Muslim votes went to regional Muslim parties. In effect Jalal literally says that a vast majority of Indian Muslims who voted in that election wanted India's partition and formation of Pakistan. For example , it is well known Muslim League dominated amongst Indian Muslims before partition even in places like Ahmedabad, where one of the early Pakistani Prime Ministers, Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar, was born. The crux of the story is that the magnanimity of a vast section of majority community leaders and that of its general population despite grave provocation played a key role in securing the safety of ordinary Muslims in India during the partition period. The pitfalls of ultra-Wahabism are in fact visible more in Pakistan and Afghanistan where ultra-Wahabis are not only attacking the Sufi and the Shia Muslims but also their own brother Wahabis who follow a moderate line. In fact they have forced the coining of the term 'Ultra-Wahabis'. Instead of stoking communal fires and formulating conversion strategies the Owaisis and Ibrahims would do well to take a leaf out of the Israel visit of late Pope John Paul II in 2000 when he virtually apologised to the Jewish nation for the wrongs done by the Roman Catholics on the Jews in the past 2,000 years and called for the ultimate reconciliation. Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 02-28-2013 Above: Screenshot from Salman Khurshid's book "At Home In India: A restatement of Indian Muslims" Salman Khurshid states, "there was also a terrible satisfaction amongst Muslims, who had not completely forgotten the Partitionââ¬â¢s unpleasant aftermath. Hindus and Sikhs were alike paying for their ââ¬Ësinsââ¬â¢. They were paying for the blood they had drawn in 1947." Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 03-03-2013 Muslim outfits side with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Mar 03 2013 Kolkata: A group of Muslim outfits sympathetic to Bangladeshââ¬â¢s Jamaat-e-Islami, whose leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedee has been awarded death sentence by a special war crime tribunal hearing the cases torture that took place in 1971 during the Liberation War, on Saturday expressed concern over the recent clashes in the neighbouring country and urged India to stop Bangladesh from plunging into a "civil war" like situation. In a statement issued by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, it said: "It was not in the interest of either Bangladesh or our country that Bangladesh should become victims of chaos. As a neighbour it is our duty to save Bangladesh from plunging into a civil war. So, we urge our government to impress upon Dhaka to abolish the so called war crimes tribunal and stop atrocities on Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamic organisations." Expressing solidarity with the Jamaat-e-Islami of Bangladesh , the Indian outfit said the war tribunal is neither international, nor is it based on principles of justice but a manifestation of "political vendetta." This comes on a day when the toll in the clashes between Jamaat supporters and people demanding justice for the war crimes left sore to nearly 50. A press conference was later organised by a dozen Muslim and human rights organisations at the Press Club here in Kolkata. They criticised policies of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and lauded Sayeedee. ââ¬ÅWe had recently filed a deputation to the Bangladesh High Commissioner and it clearly didn't have any effect. We now urge our President Pranab Mukherjee to cancel his trip to Bangladesh as a mark of protest against the government atrocities there,ââ¬Â said Mohd Qamruzzaman, general secretary, All Bengal Minorities Youth Federation. Abdul Aziz, president, Milli Ittehad Parishad, termed the death sentence to the Muslim orator as unfair. ââ¬ÅAfter 42 years, there is hardly any witness or evidence left to sentence him to death. There should be a fair trial and not a point blank death punishment,ââ¬Â he said. However, thousands of Shahbagh protesters in Dhaka have upheld the ruling of the International War Crimes Tribunal, saying those found guilty of crimes against humanity like rape, murders and genocide in Bangaldeshââ¬â¢s war of Liberation must be given death penalty. The protesters pointed out that Awami League government came to power with the twin promise of giving capital punishment to war criminals and to eliminate religion-based political outfits from the country that had been fomenting trouble and violence. They also said that Sayeedee was found guilty of crimes against humanity on eight counts out of a total of 20 charges brought against him. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/muslim-outfits-side-with-jamaat/1082401/ Indian muslims in their own words - G.Subramaniam - 03-05-2013 Mushawarat condemns state terror and vendetta in Bangladesh All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat / The Milli Gazette Online Published Online: Mar 02, 2013 New Delhi, 2 March 2013: President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, the umbrella body of Indian Muslim organisations and eminent personalities, Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, condemned here today the unjust verdicts being passed by the controversial ââ¬ÅInternational Crimes Tribunalââ¬Â in Bangladesh and the daily toll of dozens of protesting civilians being mowed down by the trigger-happy Bangladeshi security forces. Dr Khan said that the verdicts passed by the controversial and discredited tribunal, based on highly exaggerated and fictitious accounts, are a travesty of justice as cases have been opened after four decades in what is a clear political vendetta and attempt to silence political opponents using sham legal processes and pliable judges. Dr Khan called on the Bangladesh government to rethink its diabolical strategy which will only lead to a civil war and a very protracted friction in the Bangladeshi society. This schism will hamper Bangladeshââ¬â¢s economic, social and political progress and will blacken Bangladeshââ¬â¢s name and standing in the comity of nations. The sooner these sham verdicts are cancelled and the controversial tribunal abolished the better for the future of Bangladesh. It is a work of fiction. It is 2014 in India. The Hindu-nationalistic IJP wins the election by a slender majority on its own, obviating the need for coalition, the first such time in India since 1984. The upper middle class votes in droves for the party, fed up with the corrupt Conference Party-led government in New Delhi. Led by the charismatic, Mahendra Bodi, the IJP starts on the path to, ââ¬Ërepay the debt of Bharat Mata.ââ¬â¢ Soon after election, Mr Bodi stops all negotiations with Pakistan, effectively ending talks on enhancing trade and cooperation between the two warring neighbours. ââ¬ËKashmir is not up for discussion,ââ¬â¢ thunders Mr Bodi in his first address to Parliament. He asks Parliament to remember the 1994 resolution which clearly stated that the ââ¬Ëdisputeââ¬â¢ was over ââ¬ËPakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).ââ¬â¢ The statement sends shockwaves in Kashmir. Protests are held. Arrests are made. Curfew is imposed. Mr Bodi calls on the Army and Paramilitary to fend off the protestors, and deal with the situation with an ââ¬Ëiron fist.ââ¬â¢ In a bloody trip to the Valley, Mr Bodi, recalling his march in 1992 to Srinagar to raise the Indian flag in Lal Chowk, dares the ââ¬ËPakistanisââ¬â¢ to come and meet him in Lal Chowk. A protest march is fired upon. Dozens are killed. Kashmir witnesses its bloodiest day in years. The curfew continues. Kashmiris in other parts of India hold marches in solidarity with their Kashmiri brethren. The protests are broken up, many are arrested. Some are convicted of ââ¬Ëterroristââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëanti-nationalââ¬â¢ acts under a new law introduced to specifically counter protests against Security Forces deployed in disturbed areas. The JKNC and PDP legislators from the Valley, aghast at the brutal treatment, call on Mr Bodi to hold back his forces. The Assembly is dismissed. The State Elections of 2014 are postponed. The harsh winter of 2014-15 is like a particularly severe winter 25 years ago, with the daily doses of killings, curfews, and crackdowns. The press, one of the strongest institutions in Kashmir, is gagged for months. The internet shuts down. An eerie silence descends upon the Valleyââ¬Â¦ The ââ¬ËGrand Planââ¬â¢ was to obliterate Muslims. But the Plan falters. The Muslims are prepared. They close ranks. The battles make the Syrian and Iraqi Civil Wars look like childââ¬â¢s play. Brave last stands are made. The Battle of India begins. The Day of Judgement is definitely nearââ¬Â¦ In a surprising development, Muslim organisations from Hyderabad to Kerala and Uttar Pradesh hold solidarity marches, to call on the government to refrain from imposing harsh measures against the population in Kashmir. Clashes erupt between parallel marches in some major cities, between the Muslim marches and a particularly virulent Hindu organisation organising marches on the same day. The Police, instructed to watch and do nothing, do exactly that. Communal clashes see dozens killed, most of them Muslims, in systematic attacks against businesses and professionals, in a few days, reminiscent of a sad chapter in Indiaââ¬â¢s history when a ââ¬ËNeroââ¬â¢ stood watching as his State burnt. Political parties, led by Congress, call for peace, but blame the Muslims for ââ¬Ëstartingââ¬â¢ the trouble. A few weeks later in 2015, bomb blasts occur outside the offices of the Hindu organisation blamed for most of the violence. In three hours, twelve blasts destroy the organisationsââ¬â¢ offices in different cities throughout India. Hundreds are killed when buildings collapse on them in a major city, dozens more when another bomb blast occurs at the moment rescuers are trying to save the injured. Mr Bodi goes on TV. ââ¬ËTo every action there is a reaction.ââ¬â¢ A theory he had propounded a few years ago to justify carnage against Muslims in a different era. The reaction happens. Systematically, almost to perfection, targeted killings and bomb blasts occur in succession in every state ruled by the IJP. The Police suspected to have played a role in the acquisition of the bomb-making materials. Some Muslim Officers are dismissed for having alerted Muslims before the blasts. The plan was perhaps hatched a long time before the spark. Mosques, Shrines, Madrassas, and major places of congregation for Muslims are targeted. Historical monuments are severely damaged. Thousands die in an orgy of violence. ââ¬ËFollow the Burmese model,ââ¬â¢ say some particularly savage votaries of the violence. ââ¬ËThe result is a foregone conclusion,ââ¬â¢ says one member of the Hindu organisation. ââ¬ËWe have to restore Hindu-rule. These Muslims are invaders, they have to be killed.ââ¬â¢ But the Muslim middle-class, now fully aware of its identity and conscious of its religious duties, responds in an unexpected way. The ââ¬ËGrand Planââ¬â¢ was for them to be pushed to refugee camps, their property taken away from them, and ultimately, like advised by the late founder of a party with a strong base in Maharashtra, ââ¬ËRemove the Muslims from the electoral lists.ââ¬â¢ The Plan falters. The Muslims are prepared. They close ranks. From the ghettos of large cities, the small towns in the Gangetic plains; from seminaries in the North, to the colleges in the South; from large mosques to large Shrines, the Muslims fight to death. The battles make the Syrian and Iraqi Civil Wars look like childââ¬â¢s play. Brave last stands are made. The Battle of India begins. The Day of Judgement is definitely nearââ¬Â¦ |
