Kanshiram was from Punjab. BSP and earlier DS4 have roots in Punjab although their first major success came about in UP.

<b>BJP strikes at 'Islamisation of politics'</b> <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Elaborating on 'Islamisation of politics', the Hindutva hardliner said in an interview that political parties were going in for 'minority appeasement' through moves like reservation for Muslims and granting a minority status to the Aligarh Muslim University.

He also voiced suspicion that the delay in execution of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal could be because of the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh
"This is nothing but Islamisation of politics," he said, adding that terrorism and threats to internal security were also plank on which the party would go to the people.
We have thrice carried the palanquin of Mayawati and now there is pain in our shoulders. It was a very painful experience. We do not want to repeat it," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, who is leading the saffron campaign in the crucial polls, said <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Dalit Muslims in SC category? No, says BSP </b>
Pioneer.com
Akhilesh Suman | New Delhi
Is Mayawati willing to risk alienating the Muslims just to consolidate her Dalit votebank before the much awaited Assembly elections?

While the UPA Government is mulling some mechanism for Muslims in general and Dalit Muslims in particular, ahead of the State Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, ruling Samajwadi Party's major challenger Bahujan Samaj Party is not ready to accept the incorporation of Muslims in the existing Scheduled Caste category.

<b>"Where is a Dalit category in Muslims? Do you see it anywhere? If it were there it would have been envisaged by the makers of the Indian Constitution like Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar,"</b> Rajesh Verma, a Mayawati confidant and leader of BSP in Lok Sabha told The Pioneer.

<b>"For 60 years after independence, no one saw Dalits in Muslims, but now all of a sudden Sachar Committee has discovered it," </b>he said, hinting that the Congress wanted to use the Sachar report as a ploy to attract the Muslim voters.

In a State where Muslims form a formidable vote bank capable of affecting the future of any political party, the BSP leader's statement is indicative of the strategy being chalked out by the Dalit outfit.

"If Congress wants to give reservation to Muslims, we have no problems, but we will not let them encroach on the existing reservation for Scheduled Castes," Verma said.

Pointing out that the Muslims are already present in the reserved category of the OBCs, the BSP leader warned that any move to carve out a place for some of them in Dalit category would be treated as a conspiracy against Dalits.

Earlier the BSP supremo Mayawati had also tried to distance her party from the policy of Muslim 'appeasement' when she said in Merut that Muslims liked fanatic leaders. She, however, clarified later that she did not mean that all Muslims are fanatic.

Observers feel that BSP is trying to show the mighty upper caste, especially the Brahmins of the state that she is not in the game of minority appeasement and can call a spade a spade. Though a risky gamble, this strategy may work for her as she foresees a tough competition for Muslim votes in UP between the Congress and the SP.

SP leader 'slaps' SDM.
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->It seems, Samajwadi Party leaders are law unto themselves. On Wednesday, a SP leader, Gajadhar Singh — who is also the chairman of the District Cooperative Bank, Unchahar —reportedly slapped SDM SP Singh outside the latter's office.

The only fault of the officer was that he dared to ask the leader, a former MLA, the purpose of his visit. The SDM rushed to the district magistrate to lodge a complaint, but after the meeting, denied any such incident.

Pioneer Newes Service | Moga
Even BJP leaders fail to impress crowd
Former cricketer and BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been sentenced to three years imprisonment in a road rage case on Friday, overshadowed his political competitor Sukhbir Singh Badal, son of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Parkash Singh Badal at a rally held here by SAD-BJP alliance partners.

Sidhu was clearly the centre of attraction for the people as most of the participants in the rally wanted to listen to Sidhu. Even the top BJP leaders who were present on the stage had failed to impress the audience.

Besides Sidhu, national BJP president Rajnath Singh and SAD(B) president Parkash Singh Badal were present.
The SAD also tried to ride on Sidhu's popularity.

Badal even offered Sidhu to contest from anywhere in the State, an offer that BJP leaders may not digest.

Sidhu attired in saffron shirt and turban had not shown any sign of tension after the conviction by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He called upon the people of State to throw out the Congress Government and bring Parkash Singh Badal to lead Punjab. He described Badal as a brave leader.

He said the Congress had done nothing in five years except pursuing the politics of vendetta.

<b>Sidhu was getting public applause on every sentence and he was seen in his best form of performance at a public meeting.</b>

The people at the rally arrived in vehicles provided by the SAD and had started going back without listening top leaders.

<b>Organisers at rally for reasons known to them had underplayed the presence of Sukhbir Singh Badal. Posters of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Rajnath Singh and Badal were displayed. This is second time that posters of Sukhbir Badal were not displayed. Earlier at Chandigarh rally, he was not highlighted. Political observers said that the SAD didn't want to lose ground by bringing Sukhbir Singh into limelight.</b>

<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>The organisers had arranged two lakh samosas for the people but the show was so disorganised that people were seen quarrelling over the samosas. </span> <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Judicial discretion

Should a judge who is closely related to a politician recuse himself from a case if it has political ramifications? In Chhattisgarh the son of a murder victim, allegedly killed at the behest of Amit Jogi, son of former chief minister Ajit Jogi, has gone to the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of a judge on the grounds that the judge’s brother is a legislator from Jogi’s party. <b>Similarly one of the judges on the bench that convicted BJP MP Navjot Singh Siddhu of murder is a relative of a legislator who represents an assembly segment which falls in Siddhu’s parliamentary constituency and is from a rival party.</b> The debate is likely to intensify in legal circles in coming months.

LUCKNOW: Reacting to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks on the leadership in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Saturday said political compulsions forced him to make such statements ahead of assembly polls in the state.

The Prime Minister was only making a lip movement and the voice behind the remarks was of someone else, the SP leader told reporters here.

"He is not the real leader of his party. He is only making lip movement. But, you know whose voice it is," he said.

"It is his political compulsion to make such a statement as elections are round the corner," Amar Singh said.

Advising the Prime Minister to consult economist Montek Singh Ahuluwalia before making any statement on UP's development, he said the state had a surplus budget while others were running on deficit.

The SP leader sarcastically said the Prime Minister's remarks were his last message to Congress workers before the party becomes political non-entity in the coming polls.

In a sharp but veiled attack on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Prime Minister said in New Delhi that the state "desperately" needed a leadership that is "forward looking and modern".

On BJP's National Council meeting in Lucknow, Amar Singh termed the party's return to aggressive Hindutva as sheer opportunism.

When the saffron party was in power at the Centre, it had forgotten Ram Mandir, he said adding "now with elections round the corner in Uttar Pradesh, they are again raising the issue to exploit communal sentiments."

But, people in the state had understood their game and would give an appropriate reply at an appropriate time, the SP leader said.

Pioneer News Service | New Delhi
Taking a step towards restoring "credibility" of politicians, senior BJP leader Kalyan Singh said time had to come to purge the political system of criminals and declared that the party would not give tickets to those with a criminal past in the coming Assembly elections.

<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>"We may lose elections but will not give ticket to criminals .... The party is ready to take the risk," </span>Singh said while addressing the National Council of BJP here on Saturday. In his almost an hour-long speech, Singh said <b>criminals had infiltrated the political system of the country and were winning political clout using money and muscle power.</b>

<b>"This should end now. The BJP will not give ticket to criminals. It is our resolve and we will stick to it come what may,</b>" Singh said. He added that the party was committed to social equality. "This can only be achieved if political parties decide to keep criminals at bay. The BJP has taken this resolve to cleanse the political system. It is a risky proposition, but for building a healthy society and a healthy democracy this risk is worth taking," Singh, who is also in-charge of the party's affairs, said.

Kalyan Singh, who is also vice-president of the party, followed what Rajnath had said. <b>"Rajnath Singh has struck at the issue. Criminalisation of politics has vitiated the political scenario. The BJP will initiate steps to restore the credibility of politicians," </b>he said.

<b>Babulal had admitted to speaking with Kavita a number of times "to help her with her career as she was a member of his Jat community."</b>

Singh said in Meerut his name was "being dragged into it due to personal enmity".

<b>Paswan calls upon like-minded parties</b>

New Delhi: On the concluding day of the party's national executive on Tuesday, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) announced that it was allying with Jan Morcha in the Uttar Pradesh.

LJP chief and Steel and Chemicals and Fertlisers Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan, urged all "like-minded parties" to come on a common platform to ensure the defeat of both Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in the upcoming Assembly elections.

"If the SP and BSP as well as BJP have to be defeated, all other parties need to come on a common platform," PTI quoted Paswan as saying.

Paswan was unanimously re-elected President of the LJP for a period of three years by the party's national executive. This is the third time that Paswan has been elected the chief of the party formed on November 28, 2000.

At the national executive, party members discussed the poll strategy for the upcoming Assembly polls in four states — Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Manipur.

LJP also demanded special budgetary allocations as well as reservations in the private sector for the backward communities and Muslims.

The LJP national executive resolved that on the basis of the Sachar committee report, separate funds should be allocated in all the Central and state government schemes for the community. A similar demand for special plan allocation was made for dalits.

<b>Punjab Congress MLA Raj Khurana resigns to join BJP</b>

GAGANDEEP AHUJA
Tuesday, 26 December 2006
PATIALA: The Congress party in Punjab has suffered a major set back when one of its senior MLA Raj Khurana from Rajpura assembly constituency and leader of Bahawalpuria Samaj in Punjab Tuesday submitted his resignation from Congress party and state assembly and joined Bhartiya Janta Party.

Khurana a close confident of late Beant Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal had supported Bhattal when she had revolted against Chief Minsiter in December 2003. Raj Khurana has been demanding time from Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh to meet him but failed to get an audience. He had also demanded to convene the meeting of congress legislature party to discuss problems faced by MLAs.

The loyalists of Preneet Kaur MP and wife of Chief Minister said that in parliament elections of 2004 Preneet Kaur was trailed in Rajpura assembly constituency by 5,251 votes because MLA Raj Khurana had opposed the official nominee and remained defiant. Khurana himself had won Rajpura seat by 16,746 votes in 2002.

Raj Khurana was elected MLA for the Second time. He remained Minister of State for Finance, Planning, Housing & Urban Development; Chairman, Pepsu Township Development Board and Member, Flood Control Board, Punjab during Beant Singh regime.

It is believed that SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal was instrumental in defection of Khurana into the BJP. The speculations were rife that he may join SAD as he has close proximity with Badal and Capt Kanawlajit Singh. Raj Khurana will likely to get ticket of BJP from Rajpura in coming elections.

It is expected that BJP would deny party ticket to senior leader Balramji Dass Tandon from Rajpura who had contested the last two elections from here and had won once. He lost the last election to Raj Khurana.

<b>Jayalalithaa may campiagn for SP in UP </b>

Chennai: AIADMK Chief Jayalalithaa did not rule out the possibility of campaigning for the Samajwadi Party in next year's elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

"(Samajwadi Party leaders) Amar Singh and (Chief Minister) Mulayam Singh Yadav have invited me to campaign. I will consider it," she told reporters.

Softening her approach towards Congress President Sonia Gandhi, whom she had attacked during the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls in 2004, Jayalalithaa said she only had objections to Gandhi taking up the Prime Ministership and was not against her as an individual.

"When she has not taken up the Prime Ministership, I don't have any reason to oppose her," she said.

Asked whether she was hinting at the possibility of a political realignment by softening her approach to Gandhi, she said the time had not come to elaborate on this issue.

Dubbing the Indo-US nuclear deal as a move to "undermine the sovereignty of the country", she said India should not be a signatory to any initiative that would jeopardise the future of its people.

<b>UP polls: Congress may have to face fierce minority backlash</b>
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Encouraged by Assam results last year, UP saw the birth of two Muslim political parties, both determined to fight elections on communal basis, alone or with seat adjustment with others. This was a rather new trend hurting the interests of those non-BJP parties who heavily rely on the minority votes.

If both the Muslim parties are now facing their premature death, it has been due to the lack of support from the community and the emerging youth power with its access to internet. <b>As a result, the local level community elders will continue to hold on to what is called ‘strategic voting’ which alone could ensure optimum use of their bulk vote power</b>.

This system was evolved when the Congress lost its traditional monopoly of the minority votes after other secular claimants like the SP and BSP came on the scene. <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>Under ‘strategic voting’, the community elders at constituency level would at the last moment decide which non-BJP candidate has the best chance to win. And the laity, by and large, goes by their direction.</span>

If the ground signals prove true, minority rumblings over the PM’s ‘enlightened national interest’- based foreign policy twists is spreading from Kerala and Assam to the hinterland<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
