<b>Thane riot was pre-planned, says VHP</b><!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Wednesday said that the communal clash, which occurred on Monday in Thane, was pre-planned and the organisation was no way involved in it.

<b>"It was a pre-planned incident in which Hindu activists were targeted and police failed to tackle the situation,"</b> VHP state president Venkatesh Apdeo told reporters in Mumbai.

Apdeo criticised NCP leader Jitendra Avad and Mumbai Congress president Kripashankar Singh for holding Bajrang Dal responsible for the riot.

"<b>Bajarang Dal's name was unnecessarily dragged into the issue even though it was not involved in the riot. Infact, our activists helped police to control the situation and protect Hindu families from riot,"</b> Apdeo said.

Despite this, political leaders are trying to support Muslim fundamentalists, he added.

Thane district chief of VHP Sudhir Ranade challenged the police to prove the involvement of Bajrang Dal in the riot.

<b>"Hindus were not holding weapons, they were assaulted by local Muslims and their houses were burnt,"</b> he said.

The president of puja mandal, who was also present on the occasion, said the local Muslims were responsible for the riot.

One person was killed and more than 50 were injured in communal clashes which broke out at Rabodi over setting up of a 'pandal' for the Navaratri festival on Monday night

October 04, 2008 11:04 IST
Last Updated: October 04, 2008 16:55 IST

Eight burnt bodies were found on Saturday from two Bodo villages taking the toll in the ongoing group clash to 10 in Udalguri district where a shoot-at-sight order was on, official sources said.

The bodies were found from Sonaripara and Jhargaon villages, under Udalguri police station, which were attacked in the wee hours by illegal Bangladeshi migrants with bows and arrows. Several houses of a neighbouring village were also torched, the sources said.

On Friday, two bodies were found from a village under Rowta police station even as incidents of arson and looting in neighbouring Darrang district forced the administration to impose curfew in Dalgaon and Dhola on Friday and in Udalguri on Saturday, they said.

Meanwhile, media personnel saw a Pakistani flag atop a pole in Sonaripara village and took photographs of it. Local television channels also ran footage of the foreign flag.

Officials and security forces, however, denied any knowledge of the presence of that flag.

Over 25 serious burn injury victims were shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, while others were admitted to local hospitals.

The army had been deployed to assist the district administration and additional security forces were rushed there to maintain peace. The army men also flag-marched in various areas.

Fleeing their homes in panic, thousands of Bodos have taken shelter in relief camps set up by the administration in five places, the sources added.

The state cabinet on Saturday met in Guwahati to review the situation in Udalguri and Darrang districts. Home Minister Rockybul Hussain has rushed to the disturbed areas.

Trouble started on Thursday after a group of people belonging to the minority community allegedly stole some cattle from the Bodo-dominated Mohanpur village. The villagers attacked them and clashes followed.

The violence then spread to Darrang district, where over 30 houses were burnt down and several injured at Besimari and Balabari villages, under Dalgaon police station prompting the police to fire in the air to disperse a marauding mob and the district administration to impose indefinite curfew.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Communal tension in Assam, 29 killed
Kishalay Bhattacharjee
Saturday, October 04, 2008, (Darrang and Udalguri)

There's tension in Assam where 29 people have been killed in what began as a village quarrel over theft of some livestock.

As communal tension between Bengali Muslims and non-Muslims spread across villages of Assam's Darrang and Udalguri districts, the government's effort appear grossly inadequate.

The Bodo villagers -- armed with bows and arrows -- are visibly angry at government inaction.

"They came in lakhs and attacked. No one helped us. The Congress government wants this vote bank, they think without Muslims they will not win. So they are helping them," one of the villagers said.

It's the first day of Durga Puja but a Puja Pandal has been turned into a relief camp due to violence. There's very little relief and people are traumatised.

"We, the indigenous people, are being victimised by others but the district administration is helping them. They invade us and attack us," said Pradip Malakar, a teacher.

Everyone is a victim in this riot.

"It's a conspiracy. They don't want Muslims to be in BTAD area. We will sacrifice our lives for the sake of Allah," said another villager.

Though the Army has been called in, the presence is too thin to instill any confidence.

And as tension spreads there's an unending flow of terror stricken people into relief camps.

Police dog sniffs out temple desecrator in mosque

dol desecration triggers tension in Rudraram

OUTRAGE: Protestors staging a dharna at the temple wherein the idols were damaged.
Express News Service
06 Oct 2008 05:48:00 AM IST

SANGAREDDY: The desecration of idols in a temple by unknown persons last night led to tension at Rudraram village in Patancheru mandal this morning. The idols of Rama, Sita and Anjaneya were damaged and thrown out of the sanctum sanctorum.

Learning of the issue, people of nearby villages and leaders of various parties, irrespective of political affiliations, rushed to the place. Demanding that the culprits be arrested, they squatted on the road from 9:00 a.m. and stalled the traffic by burning tyres on the road.

With vehicles getting stranded for long distance, police intervened and tried to calm down the mob. However, the cops observed restraint as the issue was related to religious sentiments of the people.

Patancheru CI E Chandrasekhar Goud, officers of Sangareddy and Ramachandrapuram took measures to keep the situation under control.

Promising that they would arrest the culprits, the cops appealed to the protestors to withdraw their stir but in vain. The agitators made it clear that they would not leave the place unless the police identified the miscreants. They insisted that the dog squad be pressed into service.

The protestors relented only after the dogs were brought at 12 noon. Soon police took steps to streamline the traffic.

Meanwhile, one of the dogs guided the police from the place where the idols were thrown to another place of worship on the outskirts of the village. But the police dragged the dog back even when it was about to approach that place.

Viewing this, the demonstrators blew into a fit of rage and squatted on the national higway once again. Alleging that the cops were trying to shield the culprits, the protestors raised slogans.

Former BJP MLA K Satyanarayana, who reached the place at this time, joined the protestors and sat on the road. The protestors warned of relaunching the stir if the guilty were not held within 24 hours. Police promised of action and the MLA pacified the demonstrators.

Village sarpanch Lakshmaiah, BJP leaders Vishnuvardhan Goud, Kumara Swamy, PRP leader Papi Reddy and some Congress leaders were among those who registered their protest.

Speaking on the incident, Patancheru CI E Chandrashekar Goud said the cops could not gather many clues as the agitators handled the idols and moved in the temple.

He made it clear that the dog was not prevented from entering another place of worship. ‘‘It only tried to join other dogs in the squad,’’ he said.

A case has been registered. Presently, police picketing is put up in the village.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Hindu-Muslim clashes kill 4 in India
The Associated Press
Posted: Monday, Oct. 06, 2008

MUMBAI, India Clashes between Hindus and Muslims in a western Indian town left at least four people dead and 80 injured, forcing police to impose a curfew, an official said Monday.

The violence erupted Sunday when some Muslims tore up posters put up by a Hindu group near their shops in Dhule, a town 170 miles northeast of Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, police officer Jeet Patel said.

Local Muslims objected to the posters, which urged Hindus to wake up following a series of bomb blasts across Hindu-majority India. A group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for some of the bombings.

Muslims and Hindus attacked each other with stones and burned several shops, homes and vehicles in the area, Patel said.

Police fired tear gas and warning shots to disperse the rioters, he said.

Paramilitary soldiers also were called in to control the mob and a curfew was imposed in the area, Patel said.

He said three people were killed in the mob violence and one by the police firing.

Muslims comprise nearly 25 percent of Dhule's 550,000 people. Friction and misunderstandings sometimes spark clashes between the two communities, which otherwise live and work together.

India's Muslims, who account for about 14 percent of the country's population of nearly 1.1 billion, lag far behind the Hindu majority in most social indicators, from literacy to household incomes.

Interesting peek into the ummah mindset:
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Sons-of-soil' Muslims face attacks from migrants

Print Email Discuss Share Save Comment Text:
ROWTA CHARIALI (Udalguri): The charred courtyard is all that remains of the house that Iqbal Ahmed built from his meagre savings as a farmer. Ahm
ed, an Assamese-speaking Muslim, watched helplessly as Bangladeshi migrants burned down his home in retaliatory attacks on October 4.

If the communal clashes in Udalguri had their genesis in the conflict between Bodos and Muslims, Rowta Chariali has a different story to tell. The attack on Ahmed's house indicates that the communal flare-up in Udalguri and Darrang is not a simple conflict between two communities. After all, Ahmed is a Muslim and should not have expected an attack from a Muslim.

But it so turned out that he was Assamese-speaking, living in an Assamese neighbourhood. The Bangladeshi migrants who went on a rampage made no further distinction about the target of their fury than the fact that they were all Assamese. Ironically, it was the Bodos who first informed Ahmed that Assamese Muslims, too, were being attacked which, says Ahmed, ''helped me send my family to safety before the mobs struck.

But in the event at least six houses of Assamese Muslims - they are also known as Morias in Rowta Chariali area - were either gutted or looted by migrant Bangladeshis.

Zia-ul-Haque was attacked the same day as Ahmed. Everything he had, including eight cows and six goats, were looted and his four-room house razed. ''The miscreants took away even our bullock cart and a television set. They are from my religion. How could they do this?'' Haque said. Ahmed argued that more than the religion as an identity for Assamese Muslims, it's also their sense of ''indigenousness'' that is paramount for them.

''Morias are indigenous to Assam. Our forefathers were born and buried in this land,'' Ahmed said.

However, the picture was completely different some distance away from Rowta Chariali, at Jargaon. There, Nur Hussain's house was set ablaze on October 4. He says the attackers belonged to ''different communities''.

On Tuesday, the situation in Udalguri showed signs of improvement with no fresh incidents of violence. But suituation remained tense. Nearly a lakh of people have been hit by the violence that began on October 3. Udalguri deputy commissioner Kamal Mahanta said: ''Except the Monday night killing of one person in Bhergaon, there was no fresh report of violence in the district on Tuesday. The situation has considerably improved.''

Hyderabad: Six persons of a family, including three children, died when a mob set fire to a house in Watli village during fresh communal violence in Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh.

Police failed to prevent the attack on early Sunday morning though they had been warned that there could be communal violence in the village. No senior officers were in the village at the time of the attack.

District Collector Ahmed Nadeem told PTI three of the dead couldn’t be recognised and all the bodies had been sent for autopsy.

Nadeem, who has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, said five of the dead were from Hyderabad and were visiting their parents' home in the village for Dussehra festival.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy held a meeting with senior officials in Hyderabad and would visit Bhainsa.

Taking a serious note of the incident, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked district police to be on high alert and prevent the spread of violence.

Adilabad district is tense after four people were killed and 15 injured in communal violence and police firing in Bhainsa town of the district on Friday.

The clashes between members of two communities broke out during the immersion procession of Durga idols. An indefinite curfew imposed in the town on Friday night continued on Sunday.

11 Oct 2008, 0328 hrs IST, Suchandana Gupta,TNN

BHOPAL: Three people were killed and at least 20 injured in Hindu-Muslim riots at Burhanpur town in south Madhya Pradesh on Friday. The district a
dministration clamped curfew on the town and issued shoot-at-sight orders to bring the situation under control.

Rioters burned more than 60 shops in Gandhi Chowk area while houses and shops were ransacked in other parts of the town by rioting mobs. Police fired warning shots to disperse rioters.

Police said that the trouble started at 9:30 pm on Thursday when a religious procession was passing through a Muslim-dominated area of Burhanpur, a town close to Maharashtra border. Locals organise a three-day religious fair 'Balaji (Hanuman) Mela' right after Dussehra and a 'rath' with a Hanuman idol is taken out through the main thoroughfares of the town.

Police also said that the miscreants pelted stones on the 'rath' as it was passing through the area. This sparked clashes between the two communities. For next three hours, arson continued. The local administration tried to control the situation by organising a peace meeting of religious leaders but it did not work. Finally it imposed prohibitory orders late on Thursday night.

Fresh riots started on Friday afternoon when Muslims gathered at the Burhanpur's Jama Masjid for prayers. According to leader of opposition of Burhanpur Municipal Corporation Nafeez Mansaab, fresh clashes started after some unidentified men threw red 'gulaal' on Muslims offering prayers.

Almost immediately the town turned into a battlefield. Shops in Gandhi Chowk area were set one fire by a group of rioters, while another group attacked the police. Additional policemen were rushed to the town. Later curfew was imposed on the town.

Burhanpur SP Sunil Jain said, "Whatever the police could do to bring the situation under control was done. Shoot-at-sight orders have been issued and the entire town brought under curfew." Additional forces have been mobilised from the neighbouring districts of Indore, Dhar and Khandwa.

Burhanpur is an ancient town. Shahjahan's wife Mumtaz was initially buried here. Her mausoleum was later transferred to Taj Mahal in Agra.

The fire of communal conflict in Kandhamal district has spread to the adjoining Malkangiri district where 12 people from both Hindu and Christian communties were injured, some of them critically, after they clashed on Thursday night.

According to the police, the children belonging to the Telugu Christian community and the Oriya Hindus in Padia village had a fight over gambling on Wednesday.

The matter came to a head when the members of the Christian community attacked some puja pandals leading to clashes between the two communities. Malkangiri SP SK Gajbhiye said the critically injured had been sent to the district headquarters hospital.

A unit of Special Operation Group of Orissa police has been rushed to the spot to contain any further violence.

Though Kandhamal continued to be peaceful on Friday, over 4,000 Kondh tribals belonging to four grampanchayats gheraoed the block office of Tikabali demanding that the murderers of Laxmanananda Saraswati be arrested forthwith. The protestors, most of them women, were asking for a stop to midnight arrests and withdrawal of CRPF from the district.

Marad riots: Five years on, 63 found guilty
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>A Special Court on Saturday convicted 63 accused, in a case relating to the May 2003 communal attack at Marad beach near Kozhikode in Kerala, while acquitting 76 others for want of evidence. </b>
The attack had claimed nine lives.

Pronouncing the verdict in the case, Additional Session Judge Babu Mathew P Joseph said, of the total 139 accused, the prosecution could establish charges only against 63 of them.

While the court ordered cancellation of bail granted to the convicts, it said those absolved of the charges be set free immediately. Charges of murder had been framed against 62 of the convicts, while one had been held guilty of misusing a place of worship for carrying out the attack.

Argument against the convicts to decide the quantum of punishment would commence on December 30, the Judge, who himself had earlier received a life threat for conducting the trial, said.

The killings were carried out by assailants, who reportedly arrived on the beach from across the Chaliyar river by boat late evening on May 2, 2003. <b>The dead, eight of them belonging to majority community</b>, also included one of the accused who was killed accidentally during the attack.

The <b>communal violence, worst-ever in the state's history, was said to be in sequel to the attack that took place in the same area a year before</b> in which five persons were killed.
