Srilanka - News And Discussion
India will not allow the war to end as Ms Sonia Gandhi will not sleep in peace till the last nail is hammered in V Pirabhakaran’s coffin, it says.

The UPA Government has actively supported the war with moral, material and intelligence support. The BJP is less emotional and more pragmatic about the LTTE. In 2000, after the Sri Lankan debacle at Elephant Pass with the LTTE on the verge of capturing Jaffna, one of its top Government leaders said: “Heavens won’t fall if that happens”. This, after the NDA Government refused a request from Colombo to evacuate its beleaguered Jaffna garrison. The BJP is being more muscular in recommending sanctions against Sri Lanka. No wonder the LTTE is hoping the BJP will come to power and enforce a ceasefire. For that to happen, the LTTE will have to defend the ‘No Fire Zone’ till May 16.

<b>Is ‘Tamil Eelam’ a Christian agenda? </b>
B R Haran
29 Apr 2009

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->The White Christian Church has the unique characteristic of gaining entry into non-White, non-Semitic civilizations, by slow infiltration of important establishments to influence them and create unrest by dividing the local populace along communal or linguistic lines, with the sole objective of Christianising those countries.

Several instances in history confirm this. The Church has been partially successful in India, as evidenced by the Christianisation of north-eastern states such as Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, etc., and a few pockets in other States. While interior states have been able to withstand the Christian onslaught, the southern coastal states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have been vulnerable to the evil designs of the Church. This was made possible only because of the help provided by self-serving political leaders in the guise of secularism.

Influencing politics in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka

The Dravidian Movement of Tamil Nadu comprised only such leaders, who even went to the extent of requesting the British to continue their hegemony over Tamil Nadu. Since then, the unholy ‘Christian-Dravidian’ nexus has worked consistently for the cause of ‘Tamil Nation,’ extending it to the north-east of Sri Lanka as well.

Just as it divided the Tamil people through the bogus ‘Aryan (Brahmin) – Dravidian (Non-Brahmin) Theory,’ to alienate non-Brahmins from the ‘Hindu’ fold along linguistic lines (Aryan Sanskrit – Dravidian Tamil), the Church similarly divided the Sri Lankan people along linguistic (Sinhala-Tamil) lines. On the one hand, it backed the LTTE fully against the government, and on the other, it successfully infiltrated the Sri Lankan establishment and influenced the government through Sinhala Christian leadership.

When Sri Lankan Prime Minister Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike introduced the “Sinhala only Act” in 1956, the Island’s first anti-Tamil riots took place. Prior to Solomon Bandaranaike, the Sri Lankan government was headed by leaders like Don Stephen Senanayake and John Kotelawala, and his successors were Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Dudley Senanayake, Junius Richard Jayewardene, Premadasa, Ranil Wickramasinghe, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge (married a Christian), Percy Mahinda Rajapakse, who were all either Christians, or Buddhist converts, or married to Christian spouses.

The first Sri Lankan Tamil leader who started the demand for separatism was a Christian - Samuel James Velupillai Chelvanayakam; he also called for a “Greater Dravida Nadu” on both sides of the Palk Straits.

It can be said that LTTE just followed his footsteps, backed by the Church and missionaries. Ever since ethnic riots took place in 1983, Anton Balasingham, a Roman Catholic, assumed the mantle of LTTE’s political leadership and was second only to Prabhakaran, also a Christian.

Ironically, the 85% Hindu majority of Sri Lankan Tamils came totally under the control of a Christian minority leadership, thanks to the Machiavellian machinations of the Church and missionaries. It is difficult to swallow this bitter truth, especially when recalling the glorious past of Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus under the leadership of great Shaivite scholars like Arumuga Navalar, great men like Ponnambalam Ramanathan and Ponnambalam Arunachalam, and intellectuals like the Coomaraswamys. All were widely respected by the Buddhists in Sri Lanka and Ponnambalam Ramanathan was the one who pushed for “Wesak” or “Buddha Purnima” to be a public holiday in colonial Sri Lanka.

As for Tamil Nadu, though the Church suffered a slight setback when M.G. Ramachandran left DMK and founded the AIADMK, deviating from “Atheism” to “Theism” (moving closer to Hindu religion), and his successor Jayalalithaa followed his footsteps (at least for a while), it seemed to have cleverly moved its coins to influence AIADMK too. Now we have a host of Dravidian parties changing alliances at the drop of a hat and even at each others’ throats, but remaining perennially close to the Church.

So, whichever party is in power, the Church is able to have its say and continue with its agenda of de-Hinduising the state. Similarly, in Sri Lanka, the Church has been able to influence the leadership of both LTTE and the Sri Lankan government, while causing the death of thousands of Hindus and Buddhists in the decades-long conflict. The Church has also been indulging in blatant conversion activities in both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

<b>Influencing Jayalalithaa for the greatest assault on Hinduism</b>

At one point, the Church found it difficult in Tamil Nadu, due to the enormous influence of Melmaravathur Adiparasakthi Movement and Sabarimala Pilgrimage on Scheduled Caste Hindus, and the various activities undertaken by Kanchi Mutt to reach out to them, besides the enactment of the anti-conversion law by the Jayalalithaa regime.

But the Church finally succeeded in influencing Jayalalithaa after her party’s rout in the 2004 parliament elections, resulting in two telling actions. First, she repealed the anti-conversion law, enacted by her own government, to appease the Christian community; secondly, she went to the extent of denigrating and destroying the sanctity of a 2500-year-old institution established by Adi Sankara and flawlessly maintained by his order of disciples as ‘Jagath Gurus’ for millions of Hindus.

Not surprisingly, in October 2004, she received the ‘Golden Star for Dignity and Honour’ (Thanga Tharakai) award from a Ukraine-based Christian organisation named International Human Rights Defence Committee, controlled by America and funded by ‘US Agency for International Development’ (USAID).

The Indian representative for IHRDC was Mallavarappu Prakash, Bishop of Vijayawada and later Chairman of Tamil Nadu Minorities Welfare Commission! In February 2005, the ‘India International Society’, USA, proposed a tribute for her together with 'Barath Jyothi' award, after which evangelist K.A. Paul came to Tamil Nadu in a private jet to give thousands of crores of rupees for Tsunami relief.

<b>Jaya pursuing Christian agenda</b>

Since then, Jayalalithaa has clearly sided with the Christian clergy. Last year, while terming the spontaneous ‘retaliatory’ attacks on Christians in Kandhamal, Orissa, as a “disgrace” to the nation, she conveniently ignored the dastardly murder of Swami Laxmanananda and his disciples, and the distribution of blasphemous literature and pamphlets denigrating Hindu Gods and Goddesses, by his opponents. When the Rama Sethu Protection Movement was at its peak, she spoke against the Sethusamudram Project, not with true faith in Sri Rama, but with an eye on the votebank. And while protesting against the Sethu Project, she exhibited her 'secular' credentials by pointing out that ‘Adams Bridge’ (Ramar Sethu) was significant to Muslims and Christians as well, a myth which no Christian or Muslim scholar has so far endorsed!

Even the present election manifesto of her party makes only a passing mention of Rama Sethu! Yet it gives exclusive commitments for Christians, such as Reservation for Dalit Christians (unconstitutional), subsidy for Jerusalem pilgrimage, ‘All Souls Day’ to be made a holiday, hostels with all facilities at nominal charges in towns of minority religious significance, and addressing the ‘security’ concerns of minorities.

But she gave no commitments regarding repeal of the DMK government’s ordinance on Tamil New Year or returning the Chidambaram Temple administration to the Dikshidars, or any issue concerning Hindus. As if to confirm allegiance to the Christian agenda, she deviated from her original stand on the Sri Lankan ethnic issue and sat on a day-long fast on 9 March 2009, condemning the Indian government’s alleged inaction on the issue and addressed the LTTE as “fighters” instead of her usual remark of “terrorists”. Now she has openly supported the Christian agenda of creation of a separate Tamil Eelam, which amounts to supporting the LTTE and nothing else. After all, the Church-backed LTTE leadership is also fighting for the same cause!

<b>Sabotaging the legislation on conversion in Sri Lanka </b>

In 2003, Sri Lankan Buddhist and Hindu leaders joined hands to draft a legislation, at the request of Hindu Affairs Minister T. Maheswaran, to legally stop conversion activities by the Church. Despite the pressure applied by this joint committee which worked for six months to draft the new act for parliament, the Church-influenced Sri Lankan government has been reluctant to enact the law.

As the Church foresaw that Buddhist-Hindu unity - unity between majority (Buddhists) and the largest minority (Tamil Hindus) - could lead to permanent peace in the war-struck Island, it sabotaged the process of legislation by favouring the creation of an inter-religious council to hammer out a solution. This so-called inter-religious council is a typical Christian strategy (much like the Church-backed inter-faith dialogues in non-Christian countries) to thwart all attempts to ban conversions by an act of parliament; the same has been adopted by the Vatican to stop such legislations in India as well. Though organizations such as ‘All Ceylon Hindu Congress’ (though pro-LTTE), ‘Hindu Council of Sri Lanka’ and ‘National Council of Buddhist Clergy’ are dead against conversion activities, the Church has been able to influence the political leadership across the spectrum to sabotage the legislation of the anti-conversion law
(http://www.ipsnews.net/interna.asp?idnews=20884 ).

In this context, it must be noted that the former Hindu Affairs Minister in Ranil Wickramasinge’s cabinet T. Maheswaran escaped an assassination attempt in 2004, but was finally assassinated on 1 January 2008 while worshipping in a Shiva Temple. Till date, the government has not completed investigations in to the murder, though it has been blamed for allegedly reducing his security level and for continuing minister Douglas Devananda, widely alleged to be involved in the assassination. The government put the blame squarely on LTTE and Douglas Devananda also denied the allegation of involvement. The BBC Sinhala.com reported, “The DNA samples taken from the murder suspect of a Tamil legislator matched with the blood samples taken from the gun used for the killing, Sri Lankan judiciary said. The legislator’s security guard managed to shoot the suspect, identified as Johnson Collin Wasanthan Valentine
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._Maheswaran and
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sinhala/news/story/20...waran_dna.shtml ).

<b>Importance of Hindu-Buddhist relationship</b>

As early as June 1998, ‘Tamilnet’ reported that an International conference on Hinduism condemned attacks on Hindus and the destruction of Hindu places of worship by Sri Lankan security forces, and urged Colombo to halt such attacks. The report said that, the ‘First International Conference on Hindu Solidarity’ was held in Paris on 27-28 June at the UNESCO auditorium and attended by delegates from several countries, including functionaries from BJP and VHP (http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=1691).

Though this seems like a conflict between Buddhist and Hindu communities, it must be understood that the security forces are controlled by a political leadership owing allegiance to the Church. The centuries-old cultural relationship and largely peaceful existence of both the Sinhala Buddhists and Tamil Hindus can be ascertained from two facts.

First, their coming together to draft a legislation against conversion activities of the Church and missionaries, and second, the statement from the Hindu Council of Sri Lanka that the long-standing cordial relationship between the two religious communities in the Island Nation would go a long way in solving the present crisis and creating peace and harmony.

It is pertinent to note that Buddhists worship Hindu Gods and Goddesses and Hindus worship Buddha as an Avatar of Maha Vishnu, and both communities follow the same calendar and celebrate the same day as New Year. While condemning the politicisation of the ethnic conflict by self-serving politicians of Tamil Nadu, the Hindu Council felt that areas of common interests must be identified and along with religious commonality and cordiality, local capacities built for peace. It opined that furthering political interests and fanning Tamil chauvinism must be discouraged as it would complicate the situation and inhibit the capacity of the Indian government to help find a lasting solution by bringing both the Sri Lankan government and the Tamils to the negotiating table.

<b>BJP-led NDA government’s proactive role in the peace process</b>

Journalist M.R. Narayan Swamy (IANS) reported that the Vajpayee government played a secret but vital proactive role in the peace process between Sri Lanka and LTTE, brokered by Norway: “Overseen by New Delhi, a truce document began to be drafted. Norway was deeply involved in the exercise, roping in some of its veteran diplomats. Eventually, this translated into CFA. India also told Norwegian diplomats to let the LTTE know about the Indian involvement in the entire effort. On Feb 21, 2002, LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran signed the CFA. Wickramasinghe put his signature a day later.”

By sheer coincidence, both Ranil Wickramasinghe and A.B. Vajpayee lost power almost at the same time (April-May 2004) and J.N. Dixit, appointed NSA by Sonia-led UPA regime, passed away within a few months of his appointment, with all the details about India’s role in bringing the CFA, which he learnt from Ranil Wickramasinghe, when the later visited India after demitting office. It is natural for a Hindu nationalist party to be deeply concerned about the well-being of a country who’s Buddhist and Hindu people are both tied to Hindu India by an umbilical cord; hence it is no surprise that it tried to bring peace in the interests of both countries. Why did the CFA fail and whether the Sonia-led government pursued the policy of the Vajpayee government with regard to Sri Lanka remain unknown?

<b>The present scenario</b>

At present, all Dravidian parties are wreaking havoc in the run-up to the general elections, using the inflammatory Eelam issue as an election talking point. Each party is trying to whip up emotions in Tamil Nadu to bring about a ceasefire in Lanka and thereby save Prabhakaran and the LTTE.

When the Father Jagat Gasper Raj-Kanimozhi combine floated the “Chennai Sangamam” cultural extravaganza in 2007, Jaya TV went to town with investigative reports on the LTTE connections of Gasper Raj; Jayalalithaa wasted no time condemning the government’s association with the project. But last year, both Jayalalithaa and her TV channel kept a conspicuous silence during the Chennai Sangamam festival.

During the last week alone, Father Gasper Raj has been promoted by mainstream electronic media as a representative of Sri Lankan Tamils! Participating in debates on electronic news channels, he blatantly supports LTTE in the guise of voicing human rights concerns, criticizes the Indian government, and in one debate on Times Now Channel had the audacity to call Dr. Subramanian Swamy a “paid agent of Rajapakse”! Yet it is unclear if he is a Sri Lankan refugee or an Indian citizen. His antecedents and present activities in India/Tamil Nadu need thorough investigation.

AIADMK leader Jayalaithaa, who condemned Karunanidhi for saying Prabhakaran was not a terrorist, has not reacted to her ally PMK leader Ramadoss’ identical statement! Why does Jayalalithaa, who questioned Sonia’s silence on Karuna’s statement, remain silent on Ramadoss’ statement?

And what has the Italian-Christian-led UPA done for Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus in the last five years? Why didn’t the Sonia-led regime follow the NDA policy with regard to the Sri Lankan Tamil issue? Why was her government silent when the Geneva round of talks failed despite the presence of a live CFA?

<b>Sad irony, and civilisational opportunity</b>

Actually, the West and the Church want to Christianise Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu and form a larger Tamil Christian State. Hence a Sinhala-Tamil divide has been created with the help of the Tamil-Christian leadership of the LTTE and the Sinhala-Christian leadership of Sri Lanka.

Caught in between are the Sinhala Buddhist and Tamil Hindu civil populace. To keep the issue alive without any solution, the Christian leadership of India and the Dravidian, irreligious leadership of Tamil Nadu have been used, just as this diabolic group is using Dravidian politicians and Christian NGOs who have been harvesting souls in both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It is a sad irony that the interests of hapless Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka, who have been persecuted for long by both the Christian leadership of LTTE and the Christian leadership of Sri Lankan government, have been represented by the unholy Christian-Dravidian nexus in Tamil Nadu.

As things stand in Sri Lanka, it looks as though the West might be able to save the LTTE leadership. It will try to send missionaries and NGOs to help the rehabilitation process, so it can clandestinely achieve its evangelical agenda also.

It is said that President Rajapakse instructed setting up of a chapel in the ‘welfare villages’ to look into the spiritual needs of the internally displaced persons and refugees, who number up to 200,000. Sensing the danger of evangelization, the Hindu Council, the Hindu Women’s Society (Saiva Mangaiyar Kazhagam), the Sai Samithi, along with other organizations, swung into action to provide medicines, clothes, soaps, detergents and sanitary napkins and other articles of basic necessity, to augment the shelter, food and water provided by the government. The Hindu Council has also organized singing of Tamil devotional hymns (Thevaram and Thiruvasagam); the Sai Samithi has organized bhajans. These organizations are likely to take care of orphaned children by sending them to orphanages run by the Sri Ramakrishna Mission.

The present situation must be seen as an opportunity to revive Hindu-Buddhist unity and Hindu religious heads from India, especially from Tamil Nadu, would do well to establish contact and communication channels with Buddhist leaders of Sri Lanka. This will go a long way in bringing peace and harmony to the Island Nation. For this to happen, we need a strong “Hindu” political leadership in India. Let us hope it gets ‘elected’ now. <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<b>
Triumph and tragedy in Sri Lanka</b>
Rajeev Sreenivasan

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><i>The Sri Lankan Army’s war against the LTTE should serve as a lesson for India’s pusillanimous politicians who advocate appeasement of terrorists. But we can’t ignore the plight of Tamil civilians trapped in the war zone, writes Rajeev Srinivasan</i>

The news and the images coming out of Sri Lanka are horrendous: <b>1,00,000 Tamil civilians trapped on a tiny beach, where cadre of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are making their last stand. </b>The LTTE is using the civilians as a <b>human shield </b>(according to the Sri Lankan Government); the Army has shelled hospitals and killed non-combatants (according to human-rights groups).

The visuals of long-suffering Tamil refugees fleeing the war zone with nothing more than the tattered clothes on their backs remind us of the curse of the Indian sub-continent:<b> Religion and ethnicity-based conflict, generally leading to the genocide of Hindus. </b><b>We saw this in 1947 and 1971. </b>Millions of Hindus were ethnically cleansed from Pakistan and Bangladesh then, and the handful remaining are now <b>fleeing newly-Talibanised territories; </b>they are being driven out of Sri Lanka’s Jaffna and the Eastern Province at the fag-end of a brutal civil war.

The LTTE certainly did not expect to fade into oblivion, its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran a fugitive. Only a couple of years ago, the Tigers were rampant, scoring victories on land and sea, and terrorising Colombo with their so-called ‘air force’. What turned things around? Probably much covert aid from Governments, including India’s, wary of the Tigers’ penchant for redrawing boundaries by force (and China’s, fishing in troubled waters).

That, and internal dissension. The turning point was the defection in 2004 of ‘Colonel’ Karuna Amman, formerly LTTE commander in the Eastern Province. The LTTE ran a tight ship, and defectors generally were liquidated, but Mr Amman — as reported by the Wall Street Journal last year — thrived, and has become a Minister, although he is at loggerheads with his erstwhile protégé and now Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, Mr Pillaiyan.

<b>After sama (negotiations) and dana (give-aways) failed, bheda (creating dissent) worked, and now the Sri Lankans are applying the last of the four tactics of classical Indian statecraft, danda (punishment). </b>This is an object lesson for India’s pusillanimous politicians who advocate sweet talk and appeasement of terrorists; and for Obamistas, <b>advocating a land-for-peace (India’s land, to be given to Pakistan, so that the ISI would leave the Americans in peace) deal. </b>Pandering does not work, the iron fist does. Crush the terrorists first, then talk to real people.

<b>There is a startling silence in India </b>about the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils. This has to do with two factors. <b>First, most of the shrieking banshees in the human misery cottage industry do not care about the human rights of Hindus, and Sri Lankan Tamils are about 85 per cent Hindus. </b>Second, the killing of Rajiv Gandhi by the LTTE, and the incessant noise by the DMK in its favour have genuinely turned off many people. The LTTE’s idea of its ‘Tamil Eelam’ (they have taken down the maps on their Website showing this) consists of north and eastern Sri Lanka, all of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In other words, most of south India. This is comparable to the jihadi dream of a ‘Mughalistan’ consisting of most of north India.

<b>It further appears that this ‘Eelam’ was meant to be a Christianistan, in fearsome symmetry with ‘Mughalistan’. </b>Let us note in passing that at the time of partition, missionaries had demanded a ‘Christianistan’ consisting of the North-East, tribal areas of the Central Provinces (Chhotanagpur), and Travancore. Clearly, they have not given up the idea.

<b>The Church has a well-known modus operandi. </b>In <b>Rwanda</b>, the Church fomented genocide by dividing Hutus and Tutsis — who, to the casual observer, and to the geneticist, appear identical — through claiming that the former were short and dark, and the latter were tall and fair, and that Tutsis were oppressing Hutus. Several Christian godmen and godwomen have been convicted of crimes against humanity for their direct role in the massacre of Tutsis.

<b>In India, too, the Church has fabricated a divide between the alleged ‘Aryans’ and ‘Dravidians’ </b>— tall and fair vs short and dark, oppressor, and oppressed — which was initially the handiwork of a White missionary named Caldwell. It remains an interesting but little-known fact that churchman Max Mueller, who invented the entire ‘Aryan’ fiction, recanted in later years, admitting he was wrong.

<b>The Church has had a dubious role in Sri Lanka too. It is surely curious that most of the top cadre of the LTTE are Christians </b>(examples include <b>Prabhakaran, who is a Methodist,</b> Anton Balasingham, the suicide-bomber Dhanu, who killed Rajiv Gandhi). Senior non-Christians in the LTTE, remarkably, have been captured, have died in battle, or been liquidated.

<b>And the LTTE has wiped out all other groups representing the Tamil cause. </b>The very ruthlessness of the LTTE is an indicator of its thought-process. The Church, and the LTTE, had no use for moderates or for negotiation.

There is another party with ill-intent in all this: China. As part of its ‘string of pearls’ strategy, it previously supported violent Communist insurgents, but these were wiped out by the Sri Lankan Government. Now China is supplying heavy equipment, including planes and artillery, to the Army. Beijing’s likely objective: <b>The prized deep-water port of Trincomalee, </b>which would help China control shipping in the Indian Ocean, not to mention be a serious problem for India in its own backyard.

But with the apparent demise of the LTTE, the Sri Lankan Government should be able to negotiate from a position of strength. Tamils can see that militancy and terrorism has achieved nothing but catastrophe for them. The Sinhalese, if they are wise, will deal magnanimously with their Tamil fellow citizens and reconcile with them. <b>They must recognise that Tamils have genuine grievances arising from discrimination against them for decades. They need to appreciate that the LTTE is not synonymous with Tamils. </b>Then Sri Lanka can can become the success story of the subcontinent with its superior health and education record. <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

He said that the LTTE was "ready for peace and requested Ravi Shankar to do the needful to facilitate a ceasefire".

Chinese billions in Sri Lanka fund battle against Tamil Tigers

From The Times, May 2, 2009

Jeremy Page, South Asia Correspondent

On the southern coast of Sri Lanka, ten miles from one of the world's
busiest shipping routes, a vast construction site is engulfing the
once sleepy fishing town of Hambantota.

This poor community of 21,000 people is about as far as one can get on
the island from the fighting between the army and the Tamil Tiger
rebels on the northeastern coast. The sudden spurt of construction
helps, however, to explain why the army is poised to defeat the Tigers
and why Western governments are so powerless to negotiate a ceasefire
to help civilians trapped on the front line.

This is where China is building a $1 billion port that it plans to use
as a refuelling and docking station for its navy, as it patrols the
Indian Ocean and protects China's supplies of Saudi oil. Ever since
Sri Lanka agreed to the plan, in March 2007, China has given it all
the aid, arms and diplomatic support it needs to defeat the Tigers,
without worrying about the West.

Even India, Sri Lanka's long-time ally and the traditionally dominant
power in South Asia, has found itself sidelined in the past two years
— to its obvious irritation. "China is fishing in troubled waters,"
Palaniappan Chidambaram, India's Home Minister, warned last week.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->UN mourns Sri Lanka 'bloodbath'

The United Nations has described the situation in northern Sri Lanka as a "bloodbath" after reports of heavy civilian casualties at the weekend.

UN spokesman in Colombo Gordon Weiss said more than 100 children died during the "large-scale killing of civilians".

The Sri Lankan government objected to the remarks and said it would formally complain, AFP news agency said.

A doctor working in the war zone said more than 430 people had been killed after two days of bombardment.

Meanwhile, the military spokesman for the Tamil Tiger rebels, Ilanthirayan, has been seriously wounded in fighting.

Mr Ilanthirayan sustained heavy injuries in an attack by the Sri Lankan army on Sunday, the pro-rebel website TamilNet said.

The Sri Lankan defence ministry said a senior officer of the rebels' sea wing also died in fighting last week.

</span>
Subramanian Swamy

(fmr. Union Law Minister)

The outcome of the recent elections in Tamil Nadu has been the defeat of the most faithful of the LTTE touts in India. These financial orphans of the LTTE have been thoroughly exposed because Tamilians do not care for the LTTE, contrary to media projections. The common joke today is that ‘Puligal’ (Tigers) have been reduced to ‘Eligal’ (Rats) because they (the LTTE) have had to hide in holes in the ground to try save themselves.

But the end of LTTE does mean the end of Sri Lanka’s human rights crisis. The Sri Lanka crisis is the consequence of a festering wound from the past, which however fortunately, is neither malignant nor cancerous. The wound that has festered had been originally inflicted by the tactics of the British imperialists when to administer the colony that Sri Lanka had become, they relied on the Tamils of the island for the purpose, and also brought to the plantations indentured Tamil labourers to exploit the fields.

But, instead of sincerely brokering peace between the Tamils and Sinhalas to rectify justified grievances , the Indian government under the leadership of Mrs.Indira Gandhi decided to train the Tamil militants including the LTTE in various camps in India.

But the LTTE was a disloyal renegade from the very first day. The irrationally jealous Prabhakaran leading the LTTE snared in the Jaffna jungles and got assassinated the leaders of other militant Tamil outfits, and soon in the vacuum, the LTTE emerged as the main and dominant militant organization. In the classic pattern of guerilla organizations, the LTTE began to spread using the weapons of narco-terror and by buying influence using monetary means. The LTTE ferried Saddam Hussein’s illegal shipments of crude oil in their tankers using Panamanian and other dubious flags, drug-running for Afghans and Thais, weapons trade for the Sicilian mafia from Palermo in Italy and even antique smuggling for the highly placed in India. It became, through the ill-gotten funds, a purchaser of weapons in the grey and clandestine markets. The Tamil diaspora whose families were in Jaffna were subject to extortion, while some others romanticized their proximity to the ‘leader’ and paid handsomely for it later. Indian politicians, academicians, journalists, lawyers, and retired diplomats began receiving donations for speaking up for the LTTE and for denouncing the opponents of the LTTE.

Rajiv Gandhi tried to rectify that. The Indian government dispatched a 100,000 troops to the northern areas of Sri Lanka to safeguard the Tamils and get implemented on the ground the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord signed by Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister and Jayewardene as President of Sri Lanka. The LTTE disinformation machine by now well established went on an over drive with salacious stories of the atrocities of the Indian army. Their Indian stooges held rallies and published booklets within India to discredit the IPKF. Rajiv Gandhi, by now beleagured by the Bofors scandal and the betrayal of the new President of Sri Lanka, Premadasa who had entered into a pact to fund the LTTE, agreed to withdraw the IPKF in a phased manner. However, RG lost his party’s majority in the elections to Parliament in 1989, and his successor V.P.Singh whose allies openly supported the LTTE, immediately withdrew the IPKF. The LTTE, thus was portrayed in the anti-India media as having “defeated” the world’s third largest army, and thus acquired a larger than life image. It used it’s hero status with a vocal minority in Tamil Nadu who were LTTE’s large financial beneficiaries to build a network of supply chains within the Tamil Nadu state. They had access to hospitals for their injured cadre, supply of diesel, kerosene, and medicines for the Jaffna supporters, small arms manufacture units in Coimbatore, uniform stitching factory in Erode, and a modern wireless communication centre in Trichy. The second rank leaders of the LTTE traveled freely within the state in cars using the ruling DMK party flags to evade the police.

But the situation changed soon enough. The V.P.Singh government got toppled in 1990, and a government headed by Chandrashekhar took office. This author was the senior most Minister in that government and also perceived as the architect of the new government formation. Rajiv Gandhi extended his party’s support to the government. Within two months in office and under my supervision, the DMK government in the state was dismissed on the ground that there was collusion of the Chief Minister with the LTTE. The LTTE supply chain was thereafter destroyed.

The problem worsened for the LTTE with the declaration of mid-term elections to Parliament. The media hype, whether it was genuine, misinformed, or contrived disinformation, made out that Rajiv Gandhi would return with a majority in the elections, and become Prime Minister again. Having learnt of Rajiv Gandhi’s unguarded remarks that he would “fix” the LTTE once he returned to office, Prabhakaran set into motion a plan to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi.

But Prabhakaran needed two things to obtain, to carry out his assassination plan successfully. First was to ensure that RG came to Tamil Nadu to be accessible to the LTTE assassins, and second, some people (as allies) highly placed in India, and so powerful that the blame for the assassination would not be pinned on the LTTE.

These two pre-conditions were understandable since trusted Tamil speaking LTTE cadres could not move around secretly and freely anywhere in India except in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Hence the assassination had to take place in Tamil Nadu.

But more importantly, seeing the popularity amongst Tamils of Chandrashekar government’s decision dismiss Karunanidhi’s state government, the LTTE could ill-afford the stigma of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. They had to have a powerful clique in India that could divert the investigative agencies from pursuing the LTTE as the suspects in the assassination.

The LTTE did succeed in getting Rajiv Gandhi to come to a convenient spot in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991 to be able to assassinate him. How that was arranged is known, even though during his earlier visit in April 1991 it was decided by Rajiv Gandhi not to return to campaign in Tamil Nadu. His tour programme, after it was decided and drawn up, was also not kept secret. What has not been investigated so far is whether there is a nexus between the LTTE wanting him in Tamil Nadu and those in Rajiv Gandhi’s close circle insisting on his going there. This is a matter that normally should have been investigated, but D.R. Kartikeyan of the Special Investigation Team [SIT] terms of reference was just to determine who or which agency killed Rajiv Gandhi. On that question he did a brilliant job, and merits the highest national award for it. But investigation of the conspiracy angle was outside his scope of inquiry.

The Commission, set up before I had demitted office as Union Law Minister, under a sitting senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice J.S.Verma (later CJI) to go into the security lapses, came to the conclusion that the security arrangements were adequate, but that the Congress Party local leaders wantonly disrupted and broke these arrangements. The Commission urged further in-depth inquiry into it. The successor Narasimha Rao government declined to accept the recommendation, and the Report was shelved. Instead the pro-LTTE circle in India began to lobby for a new Commission to go into the conspiracy angle in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. A Commission was indeed set up under Justice M.C.Jain, a retired former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The Commission soon became a circus and a platform for nefarious propaganda. The attempts to frame others became ridiculous. Recently the Madras High Court had to impose a fine of Rs.1 lakh on a Congress Party worker for filing a scurrilous PIL to demand a re-investigation into the assassination, holding that LTTE did not carry out the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi! But the motive then behind the inquisition by the Jain Commission was obvious—exonerate the LTTE by throwing up bogus leads and new accusations to unsettle the SIT probe being led by Kartikeyan, which probe was at an advanced stage of clinching the case against the LTTE. But the Supreme Court put an end to such mischievous attempts by holding in a 400 page judgment that the LTTE was the agency that killed Rajiv Gandhi on the direction of Prabhakaran. The assassin in chief is dead in the most demeaning of circumstances, the question of a wider conspiracy to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi is still open. The CBI-led body Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency[MDMA] is still investigating that aspect. But CBI's reputation today is in tattters.

Indeed the matter gets very intriguing when all the circumstantial evidences are put together. These are:

[1] Why and how was Rajiv Gandhi prevailed upon and by whom, to go back to Tamil Nadu to campaign when the then TNCC President, Vazhapadi Ramamurthy, the AIADMK leader and ally Ms.Jayalalitha, the TN Governor Bhisma Narayan Singh, and the Chandrashekhar government were all against it?

[2] How is it that not one Congress leader was in close enough proximity to Rajiv Gandhi [Verma Commission puts it as a circle within a diameter of 12 feet] to be killed or seriously injured at the detonation spot along with him ?

[3] On whose authority was the NSG restrained for 14 hours after reaching the site, from storming the hideout of the assassination mastermind Sivarasan and others in Bangalore till this murderous gang had committed suicide and could not sing for the authorities about the assassination?

[4] Why Ms.Sonia Gandhi wrote to President of India seeking setting aside the death sentence imposed by the Supreme Court on LTTE conspirators in the assassination, when Nehru did not for Godse and Rajiv Gandhi refused the pleas for Satwant Singh ?

[5] How is it defensible for the widow of Rajiv Gandhi to have an open political alliance with those who have acted at the behest of the LTTE such as the DMK, PMK, MDMK and the Dalit Panthers? The last three justify the assassination ! How can the awarding of one acre of land next to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and a donation of a lakh of rupees be justified for the Dravida Kazhagam (DK), which DK does have any presence in the Delhi area? Of the 26 convicted by the Trial Court in the assassination case, nine belong to the DK.

The Rajiv Gandhi assassination is an important question of national security for Indians because the LTTE was a foreign terrorist organization that killed our leader in our country, merely stating that because his policies were not to the LTTE's liking he had to be killed. Can we be safe if we allow such a terrorist organization to strike roots in our neighbourhood and have a terror infrastructure than can vitiate the democratic politics of India with money, narcotics, and plain murder?

The LTTE from day one has been part of the problem of the Tamil-Sinhala conflict, and not a part of the solution. Part of the problem is the inability of the Sinhala majority to share power with the Tamil minority. Such a sharing can be best done in a Constitution with sufficient devolution---by replacing the present unitary Sri Lankan one with a quasi-federal Indian type or fully federal US type.

Tamils and Sinhalas are one people. They have the same DNA structure. There is thus no ethnic difference between them. They all had originated in the Indian mainland and today speak sister languages, Sinhala and Tamil, with a large vocabulary in common with Sanskrit and Pali, both Indian languages. Their scripts have both evolved from the Brahmi script. Thus, there is no fundamental linguistic difference either. Their religions, Hinduism and Buddhism believe in the same distinguishing and fundamental theology of darshan, re-incarnation and karma. In fact, Buddhism began as a reform movement of Hinduism and these reforms have been absorbed by Hinduism. Hence, there is also fundamentally no religious difference between a Sinhala Buddhist and Tamil Hindu.

The two communities grew apart during the colonial period because the Tamils had access to the British imperialist invaders, due to their earlier contacts with them on the Indian mainland. This gave the Tamils professional and educational advantages. The Sinhala majority upon getting Independence used their brute majority to try and close the gap by undemocratic equalization procedures and denying power to the Tamils by adopting a unitary constitution that had no safeguards for the Tamil minority. This of course backfired, in fact has landed Sri Lanka in to spiraling crisis.

The way out today, consistent with India’s national security aims, is for Sri Lanka to immediately adopt a Resolution in their Parliament to implement a devolved Constitution, and for India to assist liberally Sri Lanka since the LTTE insurgency menace is nowfinished off. The US, China and Israel, nations which can contribute for the implementation of this solution, must back India in this intervention. A word of praise for the resoluteness of President Rajapakse would also not be out of place. India must formally honour him for putting an end to the organisation that killed Rajiv Gandhi and so many democratic minded leaders. At this hour I remember also Gamini Dissanayake who was murdered by the LTTE merely for promising Indians Prabhakaran's extradition,

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Endgame and tragedy in Sri Lanka</b>

Rajeev Srinivasan

May 04, 2009
The news and the images coming out of Sri Lanka [Images] are horrendous: 100,000 Tamil civilians trapped on a tiny beach, where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are fighting, trapped and ignoring an ultimatum to surrender. The LTTE [Images] is using the civilians as shields (according to the Sri Lankan government); and government troops have shelled hospitals and killed thousands of non-combatants this year (according to The Economist quoting human rights groups).

The photographs of long-suffering Tamil refugees fleeing the war with nothing more than the clothes on their backs remind us of the curse of the Indian subcontinent: religion- and ethnicity-based conflict, leading to the genocide of Hindus.

We saw this in 1947 and 1971. Millions of Hindus were ethnically cleansed from Pakistan and Bangladesh then, and the handful remaining are now fleeing the newly-Talibanised territories; now they are being driven out of Jaffna and the Eastern Provinces at the fag-end of a brutal civil war.

The LTTE certainly did not expect to fade into oblivion, their leader Velupillai Prabhakaran a fugitive. A couple of years ago, the Tigers were rampant, scoring victories on land and sea, and terrorising Colombo with their makeshift air force. What turned things around? Probably much covert aid from governments, including India's, wary of the Tigers' propensity for redrawing boundaries by force (and China's, fishing in troubled waters).

That, and internal dissension. The turning point was the defection in 2004 of 'Colonel' Karuna Amman (a nom-de-guerre), formerly LTTE commander in the Eastern Province. The LTTE ran a tight ship, and defectors generally were liquidated, but Karuna as reported by The Wall Street Journal last year -- thrived, and has become a minister, although he is at loggerheads with his erstwhile protege and now-chief minister of the Eastern Province, Pillaiyan.

After sama (negotiations) and dana (give-aways) failed, bheda (creating dissent) worked, and now the Sri Lankans are applying the last of the four tactics of classical Indian stagecraft, danda (punishment).

This is an object lesson for India's pusillanimous politicians who advocate sweet-talk and appeasement of terrorists; and for Obamistas, advocating land-for-peace (India's land, that is, to be given to Pakistan, so that the Inter Services Intelligence would leave the Americans in peace).

Pandering does not work, the iron fist does. Crush the terrorists first, then talk to real people.

With the demise of the LTTE, the Sri Lankan government can negotiate from a position of strength. Tamil militancy and terrorism has achieved nothing other than catastrophe for Tamils. The Sinhalese, if they are wise, will deal magnanimously with their Tamil fellow countrymen and reconcile with them, recognising that the LTTE brutalised Tamils all over the world, and that the LTTE are not synonymous with Tamils. Then Sri Lanka can become the success story of the subcontinent with its superior health and education record.

But there is a startling silence in India about the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils. This has to do with two factors: one is that most of the shrieking banshees in the human-misery cottage-industry do not care about the human rights of Hindus, and Sri Lankan Tamils are about 85 percent Hindu. Second is that the killing of Rajiv Gandhi [Images] by the LTTE, and the incessant whining and moaning by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam [Images] and other Tamil-first parties in favor of the LTTE has genuinely turned off many people.

Let us note in passing that the LTTE's idea of Tamil Eelam (they used to have maps on their Web site showing this) consists of north and eastern Lanka, all of Tamil Nadu and Kerala [Images] and parts of Karnataka and Andhra. This is not very different from the jihadi wet-dream of a Mughalistan consisting of most of north India.

There is also the very dubious role of the church in this entire affair. It is a curious coincidence that most of the top cadres of the LTTE are Christians (examples <span style='color:red'>Prabhakaran, a Methodist despite the Hindu name, Anton Balasingham and the suicide-bomber Dhanu).</span> Many of the top non-Christians, curiously, have been captured and swallowed cyanide, have died in battle, or been liquidated by the LTTE itself. It is entirely possible that this had a role in Karuna's defection as well. And the LTTE has ruthlessly wiped out all other groups -- of which there were many -- representing the Tamil cause.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Personally, I am never for bringing in religious dimension to such issues, but some facts came to notice, some from a recent article by Rajiv Srinivasan and some from a follow up investigation later

1. Sri Lankan Tamils are about 85 percent Hindu.

<b>2. Nearly the entire top leadership of the LTTE are Christians- examples Prabhakaran, a Methodist; Anton Balasingham; Bhanu; Lawrence; Pottu Amman and Soosai, not sure about Nadesan and Tamilchelvan.

3. Most of the non-christian LTTE top ranking leaders either died in the war or were eliminated by LTTE itself (Mahendrarajah and countless others). It is speculated that this may be one of the reasons for Karuna defection.</b>

4. In Sri Lanka, the biggest supporters of the LTTE have been the Tamil Christian clergy, from the Catholic, Methodist, Anglican and evangelical churches.

5. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ran a detailed report on another Christian priest, Father Francis Xavier who is a leading organizer and fundraiser for the Tamil Tigers in Toronto, Canada.

6. All the top people in LTTE"s front charity group, Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), now under FBI scrutiny in the USA, are Christians:
* Mr.K.P.Regi, Executive Director of TRO,
* Mr. Lawrence Thilagar, TRO Project Co-ordinator,
* Mr. Lawrence Christie, Planning Director of the TRO
* Mr.E.Robert, Administrative Head of the TRO Accelerated Rehabilitation Project.
* Mr. Vincent, TRO"s Director of Tsunami Rehabilitation and Construction
* Mr.P.Mariyanayagam Croos (Cruz), President of the Mannar TRO,
* Ms. P.Mariina Croos (Cruz) of the Mannar TRO
* Yude Genoba of the Mannar TRO
The 4 Reverend Fathers A.Jeyakumar, S.E. Arnold, P. Anukular and J. Thevarudchelvam from Mullaitivu Diocese (Church of South India) and Mr J Rajanayagam from Jaffna Diocese (Church of South India) are the chief guests at TRO functions held to distribute fishing nets, boats and houses to the Tsunami victims.

The top 3 Catholic Bishops of Jaffna, Mannar and Trincomalee-Batticaloa (Revs. Thomas Soundaranayagam, Joseph Rayappu and Kingsley Swamipillai) regularly meet the LTTE leadership and grace LTTE events."

- Christians offering the LTTE protection and services: Rev. Sam T. Jayathilakarajah of the Achchelu Methodist Church and his brother, Dr. Jayakularajah. Father Aabaranam Singarayar, Father Anton Sinnarasa (now fronting LTTE in Canada under the alias "Anton Philip").LTTE"s connections.

For an organisation such as LTTE that claims to shun religion, this shows an entirely different picture. Wonder if there's more to EELAM struggle than what's apparent

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Whispers from Kathmandu suggest that Prachanda, would-be President-King of the former Hindu kingdom, is a Christian. There is little reason to doubt these voices, as similar murmurings about LTTE supremo V Prabhakaran proved correct, and Sri Lanka's Tamil Hindus admit that the organisation does not serve their political, economic or cultural interests in any way. Its objective is to provide its covert Western backers a foothold in the region.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Later Sandhya confirmed that Nepal's maoist Prachanda was indeed a christian as well. (Sandhya Jain's DailyPioneer article "Put NGOs under RTI scalpel", a copy at http://rajeev2004.blogspot.com/2006/08/san...under-rti.html:

RIP, velupillai prabhakaran, guerilla leader, <b>methodist</b>, brutal dictator.

apparently the curtain falls on one of the most capable guerilla armies of all time. but the LTTE overplayed its hand, through a brutal christist-type reign of terror (reminds me of the french revolution and the khmer rouge, especially since many khmer rouge have since become christists).

even though i have been alarmed at the christist roots of the LTTE, i am very disturbed by the oppression of tamil hindus that created the LTTE.

btw, the LTTE totally alienated the tamil mohammedans, who now no longer consider themselves 'tamil' but 'mohammedans'. (compare this to tamil and malayalee mohdans in malaysia who have transformed themselves into 'malays'.) which is another reason why the LTTE must have been christist -- they can't stand mohammedans.

by wiping out all alternatives to themselves, eg. PLOTE and other less violent groups, the LTTE practiced typical semitic monotheism. there was one god, prabhakaran, and that was it.

i do hope and pray that the sinhalese now have the sense to treat the tamil hindus with compassion, although their genocidal behavior -- <span style='color:red'>7000 tamil refugees killed in artillery battles and with other heavy weapons -- does not leave a whole lot of room for optimism.</span>
(What is to be done? 7000 people. 7 times Godhra, but it doesn't matter I suppose when it's Hindus being killed by christianism.

The Buddhists who have realised that christianism is behind it all - christian leadership in both the LTTE <i>and</i> in the Sinhala govt - why are they not doing anything about this? Sooner or later christianism will come for them too. NOW is the time for them to show the Hindus that it is terrorism=christianism that they are fighting and not the Hindus. They should be fighting christianism off their island together. It is an existential threat to both, there's at least that much in common.)

when the temple towers at srirangam near tiruchi were built a few centuries ago, the south-facing tower was left deliberately unfinished. the vaasthu of the tower was such that it was believed that if it were ever completed sri lanka would be aflame.

the dmk finished that tower 25 years ago. within weeks, war began in sri lanka.
(Typical of the crypto-christoterrorist DMK to break the Hindu bridge that should never be broken and to build the wall in the Hindu temple tower that should never be built.)

i am not sure sufficient remedial action has been taken even now to remove the baleful influence of the tower. if not, tamil grievances will lead to a fresh guerilla movement, and sri lanka will be back to square one.
