As far as my knowledge goes SP Mukherjee was never in the Congress. From 1937 to 1947 in was in the Hindu Mahasabha, after Partition he suggested that there was need of the Sabha anymore and in 1952 he founded Jana Sangh and got elected as MP.
Many Hindus today regard Nathuram as Mahatma and Mohandas as Duratma (The Evil Soul). Some even call him a asura in disguise. And his assassination in the hands of Nathuram as Gandhi-vadh.
Not necessarily each and every military men follow Nehru and Gandhi. I met an ex-Naval Commander, a 1965 war veteran, who has named his house as Mahatma Nathuram Godse House.
