No one can ignore the Congress's pre-independence role in social transformation, educating people against the caste system, efforts to uplift the downtrodden, bring about religious harmony and fight against untouchability. <b>Forming a Ministry for Minority Affairs, granting the status of minority institution to Aligarh Muslim University, instituting umpteen number of committees and commissions bearing the tag 'minorities', subscribing to the biased Sachar Committee Report, the shocking statement that Muslims have the first right to national resources, etc did not bring an iota of benefit to the Muslim community. On the contrary, the Muslims have, for no fault of theirs, become objects of suspicion, apprehension and distrust for other communities</b>.
<b>Yet, there is no revision of party policy. The Congress is now totally dependent for ground level inputs from an elite club that revels in debunking Indian traditions, supported by the resources of some vested interests both inside and outside the country. These secular-fundamentalist activists may have thrived and hogged media space, but they stand rejected by the people. The humiliation that the party suffered in Gujarat has, alas, not led to any introspection. </b>
