The current media coverage on the atrocities against Christians particularly in Orissa, the media presentation of the raped nun and the concern voiced by the Pope and the Christian world is quite out of proportion to the actual ground reality. In the past, many such aberrations have taken place on communal lines and many more are bound to take place in the future. Due to 200 years of slavery under the British, many of my countrymen are always respectful to the religion of the Emperor. Even after, sixty years of our existence as citizens of a free nation, due to our English education and Western ideas and thinking, we are prone to give very special treatment to the utterances of HH the Pope and his associates in India and elsewhere.
Yes it is a fact, that there have been communal clashes in Orissa, but there is nothing extraordinary about it. Such things happened in the past and there is no guarantee that such a thing will not happen in the future. We do not condone the violence or the rape of the nun. However, the fact remains that the extraordinary noise and media attention that it is receiving is simply due to the fact that the world media at large is dominated by the Christians .The case should be dealt with as a normal law and order problem and the investigations should be on the lines of normal criminal investigation. HH the Pope is paid to make noise in the appropriate forum for the protection of the Christians whom he represents.
There is absolutely no need to over react and be on the defensive as if it is only in India that communal violence takes place. Secondly, India in its present state of economic and political conditions is not dependent on any particular nation or religious community for its survival. We have a developed legal system and the machinery of the State is certainly more effective than many of the so called advanced nations of the West in matters of handling law and order situations and in facing terrorist attacks. Therefore, I am quite confident that we in India will be able to contain the situation and bring back normalcy.
