I thought there were no Thevars in Lanka or Vanniyars (though historically there must have been Vanniyars there since a region called Vanni exists, maybe they assimilated into Vellalars over time).

Maravans are a lower level sub-caste of Thevars

In south tamil nadu

Maravan, Kallan, Agamudaiyan are all lower level sub-castes of Thevars

All of them are martial castes and willing to fight muslims


The tamil royalty was Thevar
Raja Raja Chola, etc
The Raja of Pudukottai, etc

Some maravans also became petty kings
The Sethupathi of Ramnad was a Maravan

I dont think Vanni and Vanniyar are related
In the tamil matrimonials
Vanniyars call themselves Vanniyakula Kshatriya
