Singh for better Indo-Pak relations
* Narayanan rules out immediate meeting between foreign secretaries
NEW DELHI : Favouring good relations between New Delhi and Islamabad, Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh suggested some elements in Pakistan did not want ties to improve.
âI want our relations to improve ... If relations between India and Pakistan improve, a lot of things can happen. I think border states such as Punjab and Rajasthan would benefit if relations improve,â he told reporters in response to questions on why the Indo-Pak Thar Express did not stop at Barmer in Rajasthan. âUntil relations between India and Pakistan improve and brotherhood increases, the atmosphere is not right for moving ahead,â he said, adding âthere are some forces in that country (Pakistan)â that do not want relations between the two neighbours to improve.
Not now : Separately, National Security Adviser MK Narayanan ruled out any immediate meeting between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGAS) session in September. He also reiterated that India would not resume composite dialogue until it had concrete evidence that Pakistan had taken action against terrorists. âPeople have tried to misinterpret the Sharm el-Sheikh joint statement,â he added.
