Congress drew a blank in the four by-elections the results of which were announced on Monday, deepening the perception that the lethal combination of corruption and inflation may have put it on the backfoot.



The defeat in Hisar where Team Anna sided with Congress's opponents and the assembly by-elections in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh was along the predicted lines. ...



BJP, flush with its successes, was already stoking the perception, while Team Hazare leapt upon the Hissar result to warn Congress about the cost of not passing the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Winter Session.



In what was billed as a tee-off between Team Anna and Congress in Hisar, the ruling party came third behind Indian National Lok Dal's Ajay Chautala and the BJP-Haryana Janhit Congress nominee Kuldeep Bishnoi who won the seat. The result is not unexpected, but the two lakh plus margin of defeat constitutes a severe drubbing, and exposes the shrinking support for it since the last LS polls.



Jury was still out on the role played by Anna factor. The civil society group claimed its intervention was crucial, However, Bishnoi brushed aside the claim, emphasizing the "legacy" of his father Bhajan Lal , former chief minister whose death caused the by-election, and the alliance with the BJP.The synergy between BJP and HJC brought about a strong consolidation of non-Jat voters like Brahmins, Banias, Punjabis and dalits. But what should worry Congress more is Jat votes moving, as in the 2009 assembly poll, moving away and towards INLD.
