Westerners are getting more Hinduized while Hindus are getting into what they think as western values - such as drinking, dancing, pizza whatever they see in movies etc they think it is western value. Viren, are you sure the West is really getting Hinduized?
They seem to be obsessed with "Eastern religion", which tends to be Buddhism than anything else. Westerners are usually bored quickly, so they tend to look for other things to do, and the "exotic East" looks cool to them and began their own pot smoking cult in the 70s. I don't know how religious people like Richard Gere are, but he seems to be cavorting with Dalai Lama all the time. He is rich and is a Hollywood waala, so its easy to get near the DL.
On the other side, there are some idiots converting to Islam and going the whole hog wearing those crazy shuttlecock burqas and saying "alhamdullillah" and inshallah in every sentence claiming that the burqa protects them from evil eyes. Yeah I bet these women do need protection, what with all those years of wild sex and drugs, eh? <!--emo& --><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

KJ: I think you are referring to k.ram's post.
Thank you all so much for trying to answer my question .
Viren , May be I was a bit tactless when I made the half-naked comment.
I was trying to make the point that even beauty and attractiveness and sexyness and entertainment have been given a western patent.
I do agree with you on the 15-21 year olds are not leaders of a societey , how ever , if you look at the media they are the ones who are being projected as being the most desirable people.
My mother tounge is Tamil, but I learnt Hindi ( By watching Ramayana !!! on DD) and sanskrit at school and temple. I speak very good tamil and I love my mother tounge.
But if one looks at RAJTV, JJTV or even SUNTV ( Which is rabidly anti hindhi and self appointed gaurdian of all things dravidian ) the people who host the "entertainment" shows are picked to reflect a certain kind of "non-tamilian" aura. They cant even pronounce some some alphabets ( or may be they pretend that they cant ) cannot form a complete sentence in Tamil and cannot differentiate betwen a soft "L" and and a Hard "L".
These are the people who are being constantly being beamed to millions of Indians as being desirable citizens ( to make money...but that is not mentioned). The only reason for that is to make money for major corporations. Be it pepsi , Coke , Cadbury's, Revlon or what ever.
I HAVE NO PROBELMS WITH CORPORATIONS MAKING MONEY . Which is a necessary evil , but have a problem with us associating "non-indianness" with consumption of products.
There in lies my point. Even though there were 15-21 year olds who pretended that they have nothing to do with the Indic cuture during the 60s 70s and 80 s , the main stream societey did project genuine people as role models. Even actors for that matter , looked very ethnic. Even though we allowed the "live from London" types to pretend that they were in fact "live from London" , the mainstream did not project them as a model citizen. Infact they were trivialized and mocked in many movies and the general societey. The opposite is true now.

Yes KJ
They just do not know it and Indians do not see it. While buddhism is very accessable hindus are not. Unfortunately lot of indians' mindset still is "one is only a hindu if you are born into it", so the westerners after trying and knocking on the doors of hinduism will go to buddhism etc etc. I personally have taken close to 15-17 people to temples and made them hindus, ofcourse with stiff resistance from temples, so had to find temples that would accommodate that. Otherwise, yes, hinduism if presented correctly and if born hindus accept them there will be a ground swell.

Thanks to Kamlesh Kapur kamleshk@earthlink.net for the recommended list of resources for Hinduising Hindu studies. Kamlesh has been teaching the subject for over two decades; he also gives presentations to school and college students and have given presentations to several community groups in various states.
Suggested Readings about Hinduism and Indian Studies for high school students.
I recommend students to read these books in the order listed below ( simple to more analytical and exhaustive):
1. Hinduism
The Eternal Tradition (Sanatana Dharma)
By David Frawley
2. Hindu Saptakam by Dr. Deen Bandhu Chandora
3. Multi-Faceted Vedic Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) by M.G. Prasad
4. Explaining Hindu Dharma - A Guide for Teachers Approved as a textbook for U.K. Schools. Available from VHP book store, bgarg@ieee.org
4. Short summary - Understanding Hinduism by M.G. Prasad
5. Asian Studies by National curriculum development committee - California
6. Travel through Sacred India - By Roger Housden
7. The India I Love - By Marie-Simone Renou
8. The Hindu Awakening: Its Revelation, Its Symbols - By (J Donald Walters)
9. Why Hindus Worship The Shiv Ling - By Karthik Mohan).
10. Cosmos - By Carl Sagan, especially pages - 213-214.
11. Festivals, fairs and, fasts of India by Shakti M Gupta - ISBN 0-9323-7752-1
12. India Portrait of a People published by Ministry of External Affairs,New Delhi
Can be obtained free from the local CGI's office.
13. The study of Indian History and Culture in 18 volumes published by Shri Vedvyasa Itihasa Samshodhana Mandira (BHISHMA) - ISBN - 81-900113-1-6
Address for obtaining - Shri Vedvyasa Itihasa Samshodhana Mandira
B-7/8 Shreepal Apt. Panch Pakhadi
Thane-400 602, India
This is for advanced students and a must in every library as a teachers' guide book.
3 and 4 can be obtained from the authors.
Original texts for advanced studies/enrichment purposes
1. Srimad Bhagvad Gita.
2. Video of Mahabharata play by Peter Brooks, original play was for 11 hours, the movie version is for four hours.
3. Tattava Bodah
4. Hinduism a way of life by Koller for college level students
Reasons for recommendation:
A few lines about each book
1. The book gives an overview of Hindu Dharma. The language is simple and style makes it especially meaningful for western students.
2. Written in the form of question answers, it covers the basics of Hindu Dharma. The emphasis is on prayers to Formless Supreme Reality. The problem arises because of ignoring the original references to Devas in the Vedas. Needs to be supplemented with books by M.G. Prasad.
3. Books by M.G. Prasad cover the need for symbolism, Moorty Pooja and relevance of other ceremonies and rituals. His books have better perspective. They are short and give an overall summary view. Explaining Hindu Dharma - textbook format is exhaustive study of Hinduism and is good for self study also. The book has left out the question of Devas as elemental and terrestrial forces affecting life forms on the earth. The
prayers in the Vedic Samhitas are to these Devas. Retaining the word Devas in Translation is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. Otherwise translating Devas as gods makes Hindu dharma look like polytheism instead of Monotheism. Students (regardless of Samskaras,) students cannot understand that these are
energies and attributes of God, hence we call them gods!
4. Asian Studies Curriculum is good resource material for teachers. Chapters on Hinduism, Indus Valley Civilization and Gupta period are easy to understand and add to kids' knowledge of Indian history.
5. The books- 6 to 10 are excellent reference books for clarifying symbolism, artists' expressions of Hindu Devas in different art forms. These books explain the meanings of various symbols and their relevance for making connection with the Universe and various forces and phenomena governing and
regulating sustenance and growth of life on earth. These books help us understand why many people need forms and pictures of the formless Brahm.
6. No. 11 is an interesting pictorial description of various fairs and festivals.
Original Texts:
Srimad Bhagvad Gita is an excellent summary of almost all aspects of Hindu Dharma. There are several easy translations- by Sir Edwin Arnold in poetry and Srimad Bhagvad Gita As Is by Srila Prabhupada.
I translated it for high school students' level of understanding. The first print out of the publication is not available but the typeset is there if any one wants to make a supplemental reading material for students.
Tattava Bodah is a very short overview of the creation, the Creator and their connection to the individual soul. It also explains the evolutionary aspects of the Universe as understood in Vedic Dharma. It is available from Arsh Gurukul Vidyalya.
These are school level books (unless otherwise indicated.)
We recommend that these may replace outdated, biased, and incomprehensible many times even to the authors themselves.
More may be added later on.
At the time of 1991 exhibition -Beautiful borderless world- India a cultural millionaire, a small booklet was created by his name. This should be a pride possession for every Hindu household - a sort of reference book.

<b>Caution against English acquiring monopoly over the internet</b>
Union Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi has cautioned against English language acquiring a monopoly over the Internet and computer media, as it might stifle the development and growth of Indian languages.
Launching Tamil Web-based teaching programme for NRIs and laying the foundation stone for an international guest house at the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysore last night, he said society was entering a new era dominated by the Internet and computers. But it was seen that the medium employed was English.
He stressed the need for computer languages and programmes being in all Indian languages.
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--> am trying to find information about the Goddess Jyoti.
All the information I could collect so far comes from these sites: http://murugan.org/jyoti.htm, http://murugan.org/jyoti2.htm, and http://kataragama.org/research/krishnapillai.htm.
According to what is written there, Jyoti is the sister of Lord Skanda and represents the female principle of light.
She was born of one spark of light from theforehead of the Universal Mother .
When Skanda went for his fight against the asura Surapadman, Devi fashioned out of herself a weapon, the Vel, which was not just an instrument but a deity - Jyoti Devi.
Jyoti Devi is also known as Saravanabavayai to indicate that she is always intertwined with Sarvana or Skanda and acts for him.
At Tiruvannamalai Jyoti is worshipped every year during the month of Karttikai of the Tamil calendar.
Jyoti is called here Arul Perum Jyoti, or the graceful and great Jyoti.
The most important day for worship of Jyoti is the day of her birth when the Universal Mother fashioned the spark in her forehead into Vel and gave it to Skanda.
This is the day of Visaka Nakshatra in May.
Shiva as Nataraja carries Jyoti in his left hand as fire.
A saint who merged with her in recent times was Ramalinga Swamigal.
Some things, however, remain unclear.
Is Goddess Jyoti really the same as Jwalamukhi as Dr. Alappan writes in his article on murugan.org?
I could find quite a lot of information about Jwalamukhi on web, but is this really the same Devi as Jyoti?
Is there any connection between Jyoti and BalaTripuraSundari, the form of LalitaMahaTripuraSundari as a 16 years old girl (who is sometimes called Shodashi)?
How does one worship Jyoti?
How does the Yantra of Jyoti Devi look like?
What is her Nyasa ritual?
I would be most grateful for some help and information.
Is there any book where I could find these details?
Alice<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
