<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Train blasts a deliberate act of terrorism: US</b>

Press Trust of India
Posted online: Monday, February 19, 2007 at 1418 hours IST

New Delhi, February 19: Describing the blasts in Samjhauta Express as "a deliberate act of terrorism", the United States on Monday said such acts could only strengthen the resolve to defeat terror and achieve peace.

"The US Government is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives caused by a deliberate act of terrorism early Monday morning on the Samjhauta Express, linking Delhi and Lahore", a US Embassy statement said here.

"Such acts can only strengthen the resolve of all well-intentioned people to defeat terror and achieve peace", it said.

The US government extends its condolences to the victims of this "criminal act" and their families, the statement added.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

There's a section of Pakistan that's been starting to think Partition was a mistake. Some of them have even been hinting at this in newspapers - sometimes clearly, sometimes it's between the lines. And Ramana also indirectly referred, or so I understand, to a gradually increasing closeness from the Paki end when writing:
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->My next prediction is the berating of evil South Indians who want to keep the land together and prevent rapprochment with TSP!<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->The rest of the Pakistanis are incredibly afraid that India and their country might merge again (and as long as Pakistan is islamic, that should never happen IMO).

[As an aside: Ramana's prediction that Indians, N or S, are trying to prevent rapprochement with TSP does seem to be the way the pseculars are trying to spin this terrorist attack.]

Either way, TSP's official overtures to India - matched by the sick reciprocated infatuation of the Congress government - can't be promising to the Kashmiri separatists. (Though it could for the Mughalistanis.)
Kashmiri j-hadis would definitely see any Indo-Pak friendship as treason by their ally Pakistan and as a threat to their objectives, so I wonder to what extent if any this fear was a factor in this here train affair. Could it have been an additional motive, as Arindam says in #45, to remind Pakistan of what they ought to be focussing on rather than its continued flirting with India (only officially, unofficially TSP is still terrorising).

I feel two things make this event special:
(1) Numerous islamic people dead. Muslims do that when they consider other muslims anti-islamic: as in, the other muslims are not doing their duty, they're not fighting for the global (or local) islamic cause.
Kashmir would still count as a local islamic cause, and Kashmiri j-hadis might well be feeling betrayed and abandoned by their helper TSP.

That recent bomb in a mosque didn't harm anyone, because it wasn't meant to. It was only meant to throw suspicion off islamics as a group being potential terrorists.
But in this case, the Pakistanis on the Samjhauta are trying to befriend kafir India instead of opposing the 'oppressors' of their brethren in Kashmir. So anti-Indian islamoterrorists could find such Pakistanis expendable (as they consider moderates in Kashmir also).

(2) Numerous islamics dead are of Pakistani nationality no less. This is an attack on a symbol of Indo-Pak relations: the friendship train. As Rajesh_g says, this must be significant.

Now, from the other side: Congress also benefits from this event that covers both (1) and (2) above. They could be looking to sell this as:
- Islamics dead, so 'it could not have been islamics, therefore it must be the Hindoos' which fits (1).
- And then, 'Hindoos are trying to sabotage the Indo-Pak friendship. Citizens of India, wouldn't you rather side with improved Indo-Pak relations than with obscurantist Hindoo fundamentalists who are trying to destroy that?' which covers (2)

Or all this superficial and trite 'analysis' (this post) is merely childish thinking. In any case, neither TSP nor Congress are to be trusted. And no-one regular person in India was for trusting LeT anyway.

She said that we need to appreciate the utter sobriety with which the Pakistani officials have dealt with this entire issue.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->Why this selective amnesia? ShutYourWaddle ought to remind everyone of the the utter sobriety with which India has dealt with the too-many-too-count Pakistani-backed terrorist attacks in India. Pakistan is only keeping its mouth shut because it either knows who did this (their own ISI) or it suspects who did this (ISI-created LeT or ISI-sponsored SIMI).

If Pakistan does not like its citizens getting attacked by islamic terrorists while on Indian soil, then the solution is easy: don't send them.

Thanks Husky. I am a trend watcher and bring my eclectic reading to bear on my analysis. I got the feeling that someone will get demonised in this rush to peace and the best candidate is the other. Those invovled in the rush are DIE. I dont think there is any real liking on the other side.

Panipat (Haryana), Feb 20 (IANS) <b>Haryana police Tuesday released the sketches of two suspects of the India-Pakistan peace train bombings and said the duo had alighted from the moving train just minutes before its two coaches were enveloped in flames following twin explosions.</b>

Making the revelation at a press conference here, <b>Haryana Inspector General of Police Sharad Kumar said both the suspects, believed to be Pakistani nationals,</b> had got into an argument with Railway Protection Force (RPF) constables inside the train as it neared Panipat Sunday night.

<b>"They told the RPF personnel that they wanted to go to Ahmedabad. They were told that the train was going to Attari. After an argument, the RPF personnel told them to get down from the train when it slowed down near Panipat. They got down from the slow moving train at around 11.30 p.m.," </b>Kumar said.

<b>The blasts from low-intensity improvised explosive devices took place at about 11.55 p.m. and set two bogies on fire instantly.</b>

<b>Survivors from the ill-fated coaches of the train gave the facial description of the suspects from which the sketches were made, police officials said.</b>

"Even though the suspects were wearing mufflers on their head and covered part of their face, the survivors were able to help make the sketch," Kumar said.

<b>Both suspects boarded the train from Old Delhi Railway Station. They got down from the train in darkness in the middle of agricultural fields, and police do not know of their whereabouts.</b>

At least 68 people were killed and 50 injured when two bogies of the Delhi-Attari train - that links up with the Samjhauta Express to Lahore - caught fire after <b>improvised explosives with digital timers and kerosene bottles burst minutes before midnight Sunday.</b>

A police team from Mumbai, which had investigated last year's serial blasts in the city's local trains, arrive here to join the investigations.

The police official said that 30-35 people had been interrogated in connection with the blasts that occurred near this Haryana town.

<b>"No arrests have been made so far," Kumar said, adding that a Pakistani national, Usman Mohammed from Karachi, has also been detained for questioning.</b>

<b>Usman, who was drunk when he was detained, was in the bogey in which a suitcase with explosives was recovered. He told police that he threw the suitcase out when the other two bogies caught fire.

"He is helping us in the investigations," Kumar told reporters at a press conference here.</b>

Haryana police officials showed reporters the digital timers, pipes and kerosene-filled plastic bottles recovered from the suitcase.

Appealing to the people to come forward with information, Kumar said the blasts showed that a group of five-six people could be involved. He, however, refused to name any particular terrorist organisation.
<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So it could be the wrong train or the two perpetrators were not jihadi enough to be at site of their deed and told a lie about Ahmedabad to get of the train.

The RPF constable is the key witness. He must have made out their accent. Bet he regrets letting them get off the train at Panipat.

These kind of attacks need several practice runs before the real thing and certainly would not unintentionally involve getting into a fight with somebody and dropping names of places. There is no reason to see a sofisticated device and silly execution.

Accident took place at Dewaana, this village is before Panipat station.
So called Laloo passenger is critically injured Shakuat, he is in burn unit in very serious condition, I don't think Safdarjung Hospital allows people in burn unit wing which one of the best in India.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Explosive-actuated TIDs -- more commonly called firebombs -- work by using a relatively small low-intensity explosive charge to ignite a more volatile flammable material. This results in an intense, rapidly spreading fire that quickly can engulf a confined space such as a rail car, subway car or airplane. In this case, Indian forensic experts described the devices as being composed of sulfur, potassium nitrate and kerosene. Sulfur, potassium nitrate and charcoal are the chemical components of a black powder, which is easily ignited. The black powder, then, appears to have functioned as the explosive, which tore through plastic bottles containing kerosene and ignited the fuel. The process likely involved the use of commercially available chemical pencil timers -- pencil-shaped casings that contain a vial of acid and safety wire. Once the vial is broken, the acid eats through the wire, which then releases a spring-loaded firing pin and activates the igniter, which in this case probably was a pipe bomb filled with the black powder. The time delay of the device can be varied from a few minutes to an entire day, depending on the diameter of the wire used<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Idiotic prediction..

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->It portends similar attacks against India's highly vulnerable mass transit system by terrorists out to destroy any progress toward peace between India and Pakistan.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

If people think this will be limited to Indian soil they are fooling themselves. Its coming to a neighborhood near them.

I would say concentrate on Usman the drunk passenger who threw the suitcase and saved the third bogey. How did he know which suitcase to throw out? I think heis a regular traveller on the train and probabaly a smuggler. He did not suspect when he got the suitcase to carry across the border. the suitcase must be sloshy with all those bottles of kerosine yet he took them as he was used to scuh sloshy suitcases. He probably can lead the police to who gave him the suticase.

Mudy, The train was travelling from Delhi to TSP and there was technical halt at Amabala. The ASI told the two to get out there. However they got out just before the fire. Lalu is a liar bit no need to discredit everyone. I am going by the Harayan DIG who is not under Lalu influence.

Why Kausari is in India? Why they are not angry? Internet Pakis are calling Mushy to deploy forces on Indian border. Looks like Paki Army are dead scare. I think this must be one of the worst attack on Paki citizens by terrorist outside Pakistan.
WHy no reaction??? They are not even asking, handover criminal to them etc. No lip service, why??? Train bound Pakis are poor, so who cares or something else??

Mudy I see your point that the train never got to Ambala and the perpetrators got off. the ASI might have told them they can get of there but seeing the slow down they were allowed to get off at Diwana.

BTW it is very curious that the TSP dont want the criminals to be handed over etc. They are projecting victims of terror onlee image. Not outrage.

<b><i>Dilli Sarkar ki lagta hai neend nahi khuli. Chetavani de raha hun ki Kendra sarkar Afzal Guru ko jald riha kare. Jaish aur Lashkar-e-Tayyeba 15 February tak intezar karega. Iske bad Jaish, Lashkar aur Al-Qaeda railway station, bas addon ko bomb se uda denge. Poore Hindustan ko nasth kar denge. Kashmir ke Vaishno Devi mandir, Punjab ke Swarn mandir aur hawai addon, stationo ko aatmghati ya bomb visfoton se uda diya jayega. Purani aur nayi dilli stations ko uda denge!! </i></b>

The terrorist outfits have proved these lines. A letter had been sent to Old Delhi Railway Station superintendent Arun Kumar on February 3 this year in which the terrorists had hinted at an impending attack on the railways establishment, which as it now transpires, authorities and security agencies did not take seriously.

<b>The letter was written in very rough handwriting and had three names on it, Karim Ansari, Sumer Khan and Ali Mansoor</b>.

The case was given to the Special Cell of Delhi Police, which says that the letter has no link with the blasts. There is also no headway in the case after almost 16 days of receiving of the letter. A senior Delhi Police officer said on the condition of anonymity, "Our experts found that the Delhi-Attari train blast was done by low-intensity explosives like sulphur or nitrate. It was tied with the timer and kerosene oil to cause fire in the bogeys and luggage."

He also said that it is first of its kind terrorist attack where kerosene oil has been used as such a low intensity explosive and it has created maximum damage. "Earlier, terrorists used explosives like RDX or PETN to cause damage up to such extent," he added.

The cops have not received any input or interception about this blast till now. Subsequently, no militant outfit has claimed for the blasts but the officials say that it is for sure that it was a terrorist attack. The terrorists arrested by the Special Cell in the recent past also did not have any information about any such move of their organisations.

Though Delhi Police is not investigating the blasts, they are reportedly trying to make a chain of events of the incident. The efforts are being made to get clues.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) did not increase the security after the letter despite Attari special being an exclusive train. The RPF and GRP call this laxity service within limited resources. Now a security drill has been thrown on all the stations after the damage has been done.

I dont buy this though except in a round about way - perhaps second degree of separation. The immediate bang-for-buck is in getting a huge boost in negotiating power at the table. Expect this bombing mentioned along with Godhra barbeque in future dorkish media reports. Its an equalizer.

PTI | New Delhi
Security agencies probing the Samjhauta Express blasts on Tuesday night said the incident was the handiwork of Pakistan-based militant groups. Highly placed sources in the Union Home Ministry said they had "vital clues" which included a telephonic conversation between a caller from Delhi to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Sources declined to give out the identity of the militant groups behind the blasts <b>but hinted at sleeper cells of Lashker-e-Taiba and JeM.</b>

These militant groups, have adopted a new modus operandi of detonating low-intensity blasts.
