Blaming "inadequate" security arrangements for blasts on the Samjhauta Express, Pakistan has said that New Delhi should complete the probe into the explosions on the train "as soon as possible" and share the details with Islamabad.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said last night that the security arrangements were not enough for safety of the train and India should provide concrete security to Pakistanis travelling in the country.

Pakistan Government will ensure transportation of bodies of victims belonging to Sindh. The injured will be provided full medical treatment, he said adding Air Force planes were ready to bring the injured back home.

Speaking after lawmakers of the opposition and treasury benches expressed concern over reports of Indian agencies' failure to protect the train, Railway Minister Shaikh Rashid said only 13 bodies had so far been identified and 12 of them were being transported from Wagah border.  <i>(I think Moron singh did not think Pakis would be stupid enough to bomb their own mode of transportation!)</i>

It seems that while the majority of the 68 passengers killed in the explosions-cum-fire in two coaches of the Samjhauta Express at Deewana, near Panipat, on February 18 were Pakistani nationals, more Hindus than Muslims were killed.

This fact emerges from a scrutiny of the proceedings in the Pakistan National Assembly relating to the carnage.

According to a statement made by Pakistan's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khusro Bakhtiar in the National Assembly on February 20, the identities of 49 of the 68 persons, who perished in the fire, have been established so far, Twenty-seven of them were Hindus and only 22 were Muslims.

The Pakistani authorities have released to their media the identifying particulars of 13 Muslims who perished. All of them were Mohajirs -- eight from Karachi and five from Hyderabad, Sindh. They have not so far released the identifying particulars of the Hindus who died. It would seem that in the affected coaches, many Pakistani Hindus were returning home to Sindh after visiting relatives in India.

The Pakistani authorities have also released the identifying particulars of 10 passengers, who survived, but are undergoing treatment for burn injuries in a Delhi hospital. Of these, five are from Pakistani Punjab, three are Mohajirs from Karachi and two from elsewhere. Of the five from Punjab, two are Hindu residents of Sialkot.

However, Marianna Baabar, the well-known Pakistani journalist, has stated as follows in an article in The News of February 20: 'Pakistan has announced that Indian officials have informed the Pakistan authorities that out of the 68 victims, 49 have been identified among which 22 belonged to Pakistan and 27 were from India.' She has not identified the victims by religion.

In addition to other aspects, the investigating officers should also look into the following: Were the Hindus, who perished, from Sindh? Were they and the Mohajirs, who died, travelling in a group? Were they the specific targets of the explosions? Apart from targeting the peace process, was this also an attempt to prevent Hindu residents of Sindh from returning to their homes and to prevent their relatives in India from visiting them in Sindh? Was the Laskar-e-Jhangvi, an anti-Shia Sunni extremist organisation, involved? The Mohajir Qaumi Movement of Altaf Hussain, which is part of the ruling coalition in Sindh, has been strongly opposed to the LEJ. The LEJ retaliated in Karachi last April last year with a blast that killed all the Barelvi leaders of the Sunni Tehreek, many of whom were Mohajirs from India.

Recently, the LEJ has stepped up its activities in Pakistan and its involvement has been suspected by the Pakistani authorities in many recent terror attacks. It specialises in suicide terrorism. It does not have much expertise in timed or remote-controlled explosions -- at least not to the same extent as the Lashkar-e-Tayiba. The majority of the Shias killed by the LEJ in Sindh since 2001, were doctors, who or whose parents migrated from India.

The LEJ, which is a member of Osama bin Laden's International Islamic Front, has not so far operated in India.

Rubbishing aside the four suitcase bombs version of the special investigating team (SIT) working on the Samjhauta Express incident, forensic experts today claimed that there were six bomb laden suitcases in the ill-fated train. Relying on the scientific evidences, they opined that it was the handiwork of experts.

<b>Earlier the state authorities had claimed that only four suitcases were used in the crime and out of which two blasted while two others were recovered live.</b>

While sharing the forensic findings of the Delhi-Attari Express incident exclusively with The Tribune, Dr R.K. Kaushal, assistant director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Madhuban, here confirmed that at least two explosives laden suitcases each were blasted in the two coaches.

He said the forensic investigations revealed that the suitcases were placed near the middle doors of both coaches and that caused enormous loss of lives. He stated that it was evident that fire had spread very quickly as most of the dead were found lying down.

An expert in ballistics science, Dr Kaushal is heading the FSL team investigating the incident.

While defusing one of the live suitcase bombs, the assistant director said it had been found that two or more bombs each were used in both coaches that spread fire.

<b>He said the two live bombs were timed to explode exactly at midnight but the criminals erred and had set the time as 12.00 (read pm) instead of 00.00 on the digital timer.</b>

Director FSL Dr J.S. Mahanwal opined that<b> the “local made” equipment were used in making the low-intensity explosives. He said all “Gehi Pet” brand bottles were used to fill “certain” explosives.</b> The brand new one-litre transparent bottles were bought fresh from the market.

He clarified that it was yet to be ascertained if the explosives comprised petrol and kerosene or a mixture of the two or more materials.

Mr Mahanwal, however, confirmed that experts had assembled the “firebombs” as the suitcases were fitted with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a tiny illuminating device that confirms the smooth functioning of the circuit.

He said the <b>bottles were sealed with a high quality sealant to cover the foul smell, which further helped the explosives to explode with a massive pressure</b>.

He revealed that <b>electronic gadgets and other parts used in the bombs were probably bought from the wholesale electronics market at Bhagirathi Palace opposite the Red Fort in the National Capital</b>

While seven of the blast victims of the Samjhauta Express were set to be flown to Pakistan after being discharged from Safdarjung hospital, Rana Shaukat Ali, his wife and daughter have been held back. Rana is one of the key eyewitnesses in the case and sketches of two suspects were released by the police after consulting him.

On Wednesday night, a team of Delhi Police Special Cell had come to Safdarjung hospital at 2 am and spoke to Shaukat for nearly an hour, sources said. It is still not sure when he will be allowed to leave as the police are still carrying out investigations. The doctors at the hospital were surprised at the hasty shifting process. "He (Shamim) is in a critical condition, I doubt he will survive. He had inhaled a lot of gases and his lung has been damaged. Also, we don't know the extent to which the internal injury has taken place", said a doctor on duty at Safdarjung.

<b>The victims were shifted to an ambulance at 3.45 pm and taken to Palam airport. The plane was scheduled to leave at 6.15 pm. However, due to a technical snag it was delayed. One of the victims who is in a critical condition was taken on ventilators, although his relatives alleged that they were not informed about the shifting process. The manner in which the patients were shifted raises many questions.

"I don't understand why he (Shamim) is being shifted when he is not in a condition to be moved. How can they shift him without our permission?</b> The blast has already taken the lives of his father and brother, why are they bent upon taking his life too? Why is the Pakistan Government adamant on shifting him with others", asked Mohammed Wasim, a relative of the patient. Another relative of the patient Ashok Alam expressed his dissatisfaction with the whole process of shifting. <b>"They did not even consult us before shifting. I came all the way from Sialkot early in the morning today. There were not even proper arrangements. We want Ashok and Ramesh to be treated here". </b>

Meanwhile, Shaukat relative Rana Liaquat Ali Khan arrived on Thursday morning and was unable to identify the bodies of Shaukat's daughters at Panipat. "The bodies are charred beyond recognition and only Shaukat will be able to recognise them", said Liaquat Ali. When asked about Ayesha, he said, "We are almost certain now that she is no more".

I dont buy this rogue nonsense. I dont buy this filmy theory of this was done to sabotage the peace process. I still think this was plain and simple an ISI operation directed to garner more clout at the negotiation table -> equal-equal etc. The reaction of Teesta was only on the expected lines.

It would also be interesting to know what kind of "circuitry" was involved.

No, To go to this platform, one has to go through lot of extra checking and its on different platform. During train time this is not just walking type of platform. Either some coolie or railway staff or hawker/vendor involvement is a must. This place is in heart of Old Delhi.
