Maryland textbooks set to go anti-Hindu

Yesterday I met a worker who was collecting signatures to oppose anti-Hinduness to be introduced into Maryland texts.

I suspect College Park Shits -like AID- (and their guest of honor Godzilla Romilla)

I told the worker to send me maill as soon as anything electronic is available, so that a petition can be set up on IF etc.

Courtright authored "Ganesa" in which he made false claims to denigrate Hinduism abandoning all academic ethics. Vishal Agarwal and I wrote an extensive critique exposing this fraud. In the recently published "Invading the Sacred" we wrote another version of the critique highlighting the dishonesty that pervades Hinduism studies in the American academy.

Like all Hinduphobes, Courtright vented his spleen against us in a recently published article in "Little India." We did not respond in kind; after all, when you have facts on your side you need not indulge in abusive personal attacks. Instead, we asked the editor to set up an open debate between us and Courtright. Both sides were required to present evidence for every claim they made.

As the below cited piece illustrates, Courtright was confronted with evidence and was forced to admit he was wrong. This is a significant victory for Hindus though only a beginning. This also illustrates that Hindus can expose bigoted academics if only Hindus take a scholarky approach and the academics are ready to debate. This also introduces readers to the extent Hinduphobia pervades American adademy, a point Rajiv Malhotra aptly documents.

The just announced plans stresses on further partnerships with universities and other organizations in South Asia with whom Harvard may partner and strengthening the South Asian community on the Harvard campus by expanding financial support and scholarships for students.

The university plans to enable more students and scholars from Harvard to travel to South Asia to study, teach, conduct research, and collaborate and vice versa.

It also plans to optimize and accelerate research on a broad array of topics from South Asia from ancient times to present-day economic development, health, education and governance opportunities and challenges and expand the faculty that will drive the research.
Students from South Asia represent one of the largest groups who come to Harvard from outside of the US. The numbers from India alone already exceed those from Germany, France, and Japan or the UK.

âHarvardâs approach to South Asia is one of mutual respect and collaboration. Harvard has much to learn from South Asia and we hope we can reciprocate,â said Professor Jorge I. Dominguez, Vice Provost for International Affairs and one of the architects of the South Asia project.
During the consultative process, Harvard received a number of major gifts of $1million or more specifically targeted to support its expansion of activity related to South Asia.

These include contributions from from Arvind Raghunathan, Anand Mahindra, Mala Gaonkar Haarmann, Victor J. Menezes, Vikram Gandhi, and Eshwar Das to support the South Asia Initiative.
Each of these individuals has been appointed as a member of what is known as the Harvard University South Asia Founders Club.

Really? Mutual respect? [there, I nearly bore a hole in my keyboard dripping acid]

Isn't that the institution from where Michael Weazel, the chronic India/Hindu hater, and his band of little men in red tights come from? The ones who are constantly trying to rewrite Indian/Hinduism history so that the European christian always come out the winner in the end in their fictions?

I suspect with this new initiative, a lot of pro-christian historians will use the opportunity to completely rewrite Indian/Hinduism history to project the 'Aryan' soul-savers from the west in the best light, all this under the pretense of 'academic,' 'scholarly,' or 'research,' work.

The Vatican has cracked down on feminist interpretations of the liturgy, ruling that God must always be recognised as Our Father.

In a move designed to counter the spread of gender-neutral phrases, the Holy See said that anyone baptised using alternative terms, such as "Creator", "Redeemer" and "Sanctifier" would have to be re-baptised using the traditional ceremony.

The Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith said yesterday: "These variations arise from so-called feminist theology and are an attempt to avoid using the words Father and Son, which are held to be chauvinistic."

Instead, it said that the traditional form of "Father, Son and Holy Ghost" had to be respected.

The alternative phrases originated in North America and started to become popular only in the past few years.

The new phrases are particularly popular in the Church of England. It was recently reported that guidelines to bishops and priests advised them to avoid "uncritical use of masculine imagery".

The Catholic Church and the Church of England are split over feminist issues.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, and the Pope, met in Rome last year, but admitted that the ordination of women priests was a "serious obstacle" to closer ties.

The Pope, who wrote the latest ruling, has been a strong opponent of feminism in the Catholic Church.

In his book, The Ratzinger Report, he wrote: "I am, in fact, convinced that what feminism promotes in its radical form is no longer the Christianity that we know; it is another religion."

Rosemary Radford Ruether, a professor of feminist theology at the Graduate Theological Union in California, said that among "liberal" Catholics, the Pope "is not our Pope".

The Vatican said anyone baptised under the feminist terms could invalidate their marriage. Cardinal Urbano Navarrete, who wrote a formal commentary on yesterday's ruling, gave warning that anyone who attempted to baptise someone with a gender-neutral form would be penalised. "It is seriously illegitimate and unjust," he said.

Monsignor Antonio Miralles, a professor at the Pontifical Holy Cross University, said the new baptism "subverts faith in the Trinity" because it does not make the relationship between the three persons clear. "God is eternally Father in relation to His only begotten Son, who is not eternally Son except in relation to the Father."

Meanwhile, the Pope also spoke out against gay marriage and abortion before his first trip to the United States before Easter. He praised Americans who respected the "institution of marriage, acknowledged as a stable union between a man and a woman".

In December 2004, Steve Farmer and his two colleagues published an article where they mention several reasons why the Indus script cannot be writing. In the paper I presented here in Chennai, I examined each one of their nine arguments, concluding that none holds water. For instance, they claim that there is no repetition of signs within a single Indus seal, emphasising this as the most important indicator. But I can quote many examples where such repetition is found.

Another claim was that no longer texts in other writing media like palm leaves have been found at Indus sites. We know from Greek sources that cotton cloth was used as writing material in 325 BC in the Indus Valley. But preserved Indian texts written on cotton cloth date from more than a thousand years later. We know for certain that the Indus people had cotton, but only microscopically small remains of cotton have been preserved in association with metal objects.

Farmer and his colleagues do not discuss the evidence supplied by the Indus sign sequences, which make it virtually certain that the Indus script is writing. How else can we explain that in hundreds of sequences, the signs are always written in the same definite order? If they were just non-linguistic symbols, why did they follow such rules, and did the Indus people keep long registers of sign orders in all the many dozens of sites?

Judge denies Motion for Summary Judgment against CAPEEM

California Parents for the Equalization of Educational Materials (CAPEEM) scored a major victory on Tuesday when Judge Frank C. Damrell, Jr. of the United States District Court of the Eastern District of California rejectedÂ the defendants' motion to dismiss CAPEEM's lawsuit to correct inaccuracies in sixth grade history textbooks. CAPEEM's complaint contends that the process to adopt the textbooks discriminated against Hindus and that the textbooks indulge in indoctrination of Abrahamic religions while using disparaging language against Hinduism.

The motion for summary judgment asking for the dismissal of the lawsuit was filed by the office of California 's Attorney General on behalf of the officials of the State Board of Education and the California Department of Education. Judge Damrell rejected the claim that an earlier ruling in a lawsuit filed in a state court by the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) had definitively settled the issues raised by CAPEEM in its lawsuit.

The judge pointed out that the ruling in the HAF case strengthened CAPEEM's claim of discrimination against its members.Â Judge Damrell noted, "the superior court found in favor of the HAF plaintiffs on their state APA claim; arguably, this finding lends support to CAPEEM's claims in this case that defendants conducted the adoption process in a manner that was discriminatory.

The judge also agreed with CAPEEM's claim that the issues in the two cases were different:Â ". . . Similarly, the superior court concluded the textbooks at issue there did not violate the state standards for content, as promulgated by defendants. This court could find defendants violated the Establishment Clause without reaching a judgment that is inconsistent with that of the superior court; this court could find that the underlying standards themselves violate the Establishment Clause.

Reacting to the judgment, Arvind Kumar , a director of CAPEEM said, "the arguments in the Defendants' motion posed the biggest challenge to us so far and we are happy to have won this victory. We can now focus our energies on our main claims in the lawsuit.

CAPEEM's attorneys Venkat Balasubramani and Michael Newdow expressed satisfaction with the order. This was the third motion filed by the defendants against CAPEEM in attempts to seek summary dismissal of the lawsuit.

The Love Guru
New York: The concern of US Hindus that Hollywood comedy âThe Love Guruâ may degrade their institutions has found support from leaders of other faiths. The film's producers have agreed to pre-screen it for Hindu representatives before release.

Father Charles T. Durante, a Catholic priest in northern Nevada, said in a statement Sunda, "It is important that we respect those parts of every faith which are held sacred. I applaud Paramount Pictures for being open to the request of Hindu leaders to preview this film and listen to any concerns that may arise for them."

Rajan Zed, who has delivered Hindu opening prayers in the US Senate and many state legislatures, had taken up the issue with Paramount after watching the trailer of the Mike Myers film. The comedy is about an Indian-style American guru with a knack for solving celebrities' romantic problems.

Said Rabbi Jonathan B. Freirich, who has a following in parts of California and Nevada: "While 'The Love Guru' appears to be a funny take on new age spirituality, it seems like it may portray many Hindu practices in a less than sensitive light. It would be appropriate for the film's producers to assure that they in no way wish to make any general statements about Hinduism."

Right Reverend Gene Savoy Jr., head Bishop of the International Community of Christ, said that one must take religion seriously and businesses should give due regard to the feelings of adherents of various faiths.

Some Hindu organisations have also joined the issue.

Vidya Chaitanya, director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Los Angeles, said: "The guru has traditionally been the spiritual guide or teacher and as such is respected, revered and in some cases, worshipped. This movie demeans the role of the guru."

Zed has urged Paramount to be prepared to make amends if needed after it is screened for Hindu leaders.

"The Love Guru," with a cameo by new age guru Deepak Chopra, starring Ben Kingsley, Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake, appears to be using double entendres. "His karma is huge" is its tagline, and guru characters have names like Tugginmypudha, played by Kingsley.

Paramount's publicist Jessica Rovins has defended the film as a "satire created in the same spirit as 'Austin Powers'" - a series of comedies revolving around the madcap character created by Myers - which was not being made to offend anybody.

On latest legal victory scored by CAPEEM, here's comment:

Witzel famously claimed that horses in India were donkeys in order to push the biblical Japhetic Race Theory into textbooks..

The HAF case was supposed to completely destroy the CAPEEM lawsuit, but CAPEEM has not only argued its way out of this situation, but also turned it to their advantage! The HAF ruling now is supposed to help their claims of discrimination. This is absolute genius!

We wait for bated breath for the analysis from Witzel's assistant, the rabid Christist fanatic Steve Farmer who advocated the support for the Colorado evangelicals, for an analysis of the judgment and a claim that CAPEEM actually lost the motion and there is no case that is active. He can use his biblical mathematics in which repeated multiplication of 1 with itself yields other numbers.

Witzel must be feeling really desperate that the claims on having visions of Jesus will now be challenged. Maybe, he should send another SOS to Reverend John Dayal.

Fairfax, Virginia: Review Finds Slurs In '06 Saudi Texts

A sampling of 2006-07 Islamic studies textbooks showed that much of the controversial material had been removed. At least one book still contained passages that extolled jihad and martyrdom, called for victory over one's enemies and said the killing of adulterers and apostates was "justified." The academy, founded in 1984, has about 1,000 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and is separated into boys' and girls' schools. It is the only Saudi-funded school in the United States. About 70 percent of the academy's students are U.S. citizens drawn from the region's Muslim communities. About a quarter are Saudi.

MALAPPURAM: A primary school headmaster died after being brutally beatenÂ up by muslims at Kizhisseri in the district on Saturday.

Activists of the Muslim Youth League protesting against theÂ Class VII Social Science textbook roughed up James Augustine, 40, headmaster of ALP School, Valillapuzha, near Areekode The protesters had already locked the school gate as part of the State-wide agitation.

Witnesses said Mr. Augustine was manhandled when he moved towards the school through a narrow pathway around 11 a.m. He collapsed following the attack. He was rushed to a private hospital at Kizhissery, from where he was referred to a hospital in Kozhikode. He died on the way to Kozhikode.

The Kerala Private Primary Headmasters' Association, an independent organisation of which Mr. Augustine was a member, demanded an inquiry into the circumstances leading to his death and action against those responsible for it. M. Sudhakaran, president of the association, said the death was brutal.

Last month, the Discovery phase came to an end in CAPEEM's
lawsuit against the officials of the California Department of
Education (CDE) and members of the State Board of Education (SBE)
and we thought this would be a good time to give you an update on
the status of the case.

As you may recall, we first filed the lawsuit in March 2006
pointing out that SBE had adopted textbooks that not only
indoctrinated children with Abrahamic religions but also disparaged
Hinduism. In addition, CDE had used hostile advisers to advice them
on Hinduism had discriminated against Hindus during the adoption
process. The complaint was filed by Venkat Balasubramani, a Seattle
based attorney, and Mike Newdow, a Sacramento based attorney, joined
our legal team in late 2007.

Within a few months of filing our complaint, we had to overcome
two motions to dismiss our lawsuit. The Discovery Process began
towards the end of 2006 after the court ruled in our favor on the
second motion. We served a number of subpoenas to various parties
including textbook publishers, Hotmail, Dalit Freedom Network,
Michael Witzel, Stanley Wolpert, Charles Munger, Dalit Solidarity
Forum operating out of St. Alban's Church in New Jersey , and also
sought documents from the officials of CDE and SBE.

The subpoenas and discovery requests resulted in us obtaining
over 25,000 pages of documents. While we obtained several
incriminating documents, we had to file a motion to compel Michael
Witzel to part with documents he withheld. Witzel handed over many
documents before the scheduled hearing in court, but we did not
obtain his communications with third parties unrelated to the
dispute as the judge stated that they were not necessary for us to
make our case.

We appealed this ruling, and in July this year, the appeals
court reaffirmed the decision of the lower court and stated that we
had already been given most of what we had asked for. However,
Witzel turned over some more documents including an email uncovering
the fact that the CDE had conducted a secret meeting that was
previously unheard of. This meeting with anti-Hindu groups was in
addition to the secret meeting that CDE had conducted with Witzel
and others.

Among the documents that we received from other sources, we
found extensive links between churches and key people involved in
the adoption process. The counsel for CDE was in touch with her
pastor and other emails showed that the CDE staff acted to assign
arbitrary dates to biblical events. Curriculum Commissioner Charles
Munger reported his victory to a member of his religious group and
also gave detailed instructions to the counsel of CDE on how to
handle questions regarding the description of the crucifixion of
Jesus.


We also uncovered a link between Michael Witzel and Dalit
Freedom Network (DFN), a group that operates out of a church in
Colorado . Witzel coordinated his campaign with DFN and planned in
advance the details of what would be spoken at meetings. Witzel also
sent an email alerting DFN to the description of their organization
on Wikipedia and stated that whenever he erased the description, it
kept coming back. An office bearer of DFN followed up on this email
by saying that she did not want to "start being identified as a
missions organization" and wanted to know if they could edit it
themselves.


In March this year, we informed you that the court had rejected
the defendants' motion to dismiss the case. In that motion, the
defendants had alleged that we had the same interests as the Hindu
American Foundation (HAF) and were in privity with them. We argued
that we represented different interests and that the nature of our
lawsuit was different from the HAF lawsuit.

After we sent you that message, there has been a tremendous
amount of activity in the lawsuit. The defendants filed a motion to
reconsider the judgment and the judge once again ruled in our favor
saying that the defendants had merely rehashed their arguments.

In the past few weeks, we conducted a number of depositions.
Among those whom we deposed were CDE staff member Tom Adams, former
Chair of SBE Ruth Green, Curriculum Commissioner Charles Munger,
Michael Witzel and other staff members of CDE. We also obtained a
signed statement from CDE's expert Stanley Wolpert. After carefully
reviewing the data in our possession, we decided not to depose James
Heitzman as we determined that despite his bias, he was not that
important and we would gain nothing new from deposing him. Moreover,
the defendants' attorneys agreed to let us use documents related to
Heitzman as evidence without additional identification from him.

On our side, a director of CAPEEM and two parents whose names we
submitted as representative parents were deposed. The defendants
also deposed their own expert Prof. Shiva Bajpai.

Finally, we filed a motion to compel the defendants to hand over
a few more documents that were withheld. We withdrew the motion
after they agreed to give us the documents we sought from them.

The resource intensive Discovery Process came to an end a few
days ago and it would not have been possible for us to successfully
complete this phase without your support. Last year at this time, we
were short of funds and appealed to you for your support after
putting the case on hold and entering into settlement talks.

This week, as the case enters the next phase, we will put
forward the names of our experts and turn in their reports. Although
the Discovery phase was the most expensive part of the lawsuit, the
remaining part of the lawsuit will also use up substantial
resources. We look forward to your renewed support and hope you will
donate liberally and help make this case a success.

Do the books talk about how Islamic invaders treated kafirs?
