Srilanka - News And Discussion
The plight of the sri lankan tamils is primarily due to under-breeding

Starting 1800, they started attending xtian schools, educated their women and cut back on fertility
Short term they got jobs, long term, they got massacred

In the meantime from the ungrateful sinhalese

This is from the defence.lk website of the Sri Lankan govt.

...According to the Asian Tribune the most recent case is the new Indian Foreign Minister S. M. Krishna who urged us to address the "root cause of the conflict" by effective devolution of powers to all communities in the Island nation. I say to Mr. Krishna "Who are you to tell us, a sovereign nation how to run our country? You just mind your own business or wind up like that woman Navi Pillai. The choice is yours.

To India we say that not only will there be no devolution of any sort because it is the necessary and sufficient step to separation but also the Indo Lanka Accord forced on us by India will be annulled and thrown out so that we could cleanse this land of the last vestige of Indian hegemony. You created the LTTE with the intention of annexing our land. We liquidated what you created. You can annex the moon much easier than that...

Prabhakaran was a Karaiyar caste ( naval , fishermen ) and historically
the karaiyar caste also exists in TN and is a sub-set of Maravan caste ( a subset of the martial Thevar caste )
The other tamil militants and TULF was run by velalas

This kind of explains the ruthless elimination of other tamil groups ,
because they were other caste
This also explains the fanatical loyalty of the LTTE, since they were fighting for their caste
Hindus will fight for their caste not their religion

The same karaiyar caste in southern sri lanka is called Karve caste
They converted to buddhism and are considered Sinhalese despite being 100% tamil. The karve have done a lot of anti-tamil atrocities

Again blame the fanatical buddhist monks
It is a religion war, not linguistic war, since the linguistic groups in India dont fight so much

The JVP mainly comes from this Karve caste
The 2 JVP revolts must be considered caste wars against the sinhalese landlord Govigama caste

The Karaiyars in Lanka are also considered to be a subgroup of Thevars?

I thought there were no Thevars in Lanka or Vanniyars (though historically there must have been Vanniyars there since a region called Vanni exists, maybe they assimilated into Vellalars over time).

The karaiyars are a lower level sub-caste of Maravans

Maravans are a lower level sub-caste of Thevars

In south tamil nadu

Maravan, Kallan, Agamudaiyan are all lower level sub-castes of Thevars

All of them are martial castes and willing to fight muslims

The tamil royalty was Thevar
Raja Raja Chola, etc
The Raja of Pudukottai, etc

Some maravans also became petty kings
The Sethupathi of Ramnad was a Maravan

I dont think Vanni and Vanniyar are related
In the tamil matrimonials
Vanniyars call themselves Vanniyakula Kshatriya

Regarding the Hill country Indian tamils, I read that they are constantly harassed by the sinhalese under the guidance of buddhist monks to convert to buddhism and declare themselves Sinhalese

I think historically, Sri Lanka was always a tamil land
even from pre-history

Even Vijaya landed only with 500 men and they married Pandya women
from Madurai

Even by 200BC, King Elara was able to invade with an army
Well before that, fishing villages from TN must have migrated to Sri lanka
by boat or by walking on Ram Sethu for thousands of years

What seems to have happened is that small scale tamil settlements
have been targeted by buddhist monks for conversion and switching language

In rural sinhala villages, the people follow a Pattini cult with its local pujaris, yet they declare themselves buddhists for political reasons

The sangh parivar, seems to think that buddhists are our friends, we have no friends

For just one instance, the large Roman Catholic Karawe caste community on the west coast north of Colombo were mainly Tamil speaking and those who were literate were generally literate in Tamil. But from the 19th century they have appeared as Sinhalese in census reports4.

The earliest Iron Age urban centres in the whole of South India came into existence about the southern tip of the Indian peninsula from about 900 BC, suggesting a link with East-West trade. These centres were Anuradhapura ,which later emerged as the capital of Ceylon ,and Madhurai in South India ,which emerged as the capital of Pandya. The Iron Age people, perhaps the Nagas of the chronicles of Ancient Ceylon who were spread out in several small kingdoms, are also associated with types of Iron Age urn burials discovered in South India and Ceylon1.

The mahavamsa says that sri lanka was occupied by Yakshas ( Veddahs )
and Nagas before Vijaya

Per Ambedkar, Nagas represented, peoples not under traditional Aryan culture

In light of above paragraph, we can see a common iron age in south India circa 900 BC on both sides of the Palk straits

By the early 19th century their population was a shadow of what it would have been at the time of their prosperity. Census reports bear testimony to the relative decline of the Tamil population in the North-East. In the British Administration's 1827 census the Tamil population of the North-East formed 17 to 20 %of the total Ceylon population 2. This had declined to 14% by 1901 (after accounting for emigration and the addition of an India-born population to the Ceylon population). This trend is further confirmed by a comparison of rates of natural increase in the wet and dry zones in the early decades of this century3. In 1981 the Tamil population in the North-East was 8.6% of the Ceylon population (although Tamils of North-East origin formed 12.5%).

sinhala colonisation

From the 1940s the government pursued with vigour the policy of restoring or constructing irrigation works in the wet-zone and the planned migration of principally Sinhalese poor from the more populous wet-zone districts into the dry-zone. This was ostensibly meant to relieve landlessness among peasantry in the former. Enormous subsidies were given at state expense. In the main the Gal Oya, Kanthalai and Allai schemes had the effect of increasing the Sinhalese population in the Eastern Province from about 5% in 1901 to 25% in 1981, the balance being 42% Tamil and 32% Muslim.

with apologies to the new york post's old headline.

yes, the sinhalese have realized that the christists were the evil svengalis behind the LTTE, and they defeated the LTTE with chinese help, so they don't owe the christists a darn thing, so they are saying "up yours" to the christists. good for them.

http://www.dailypioneer.com/181704/Lanka-B...-on-Church.html

however, they are also saying "we don't care" to all the tamils, which is not good. they can say this to the converted christist tamils (which was basically the entire LTTE leadership) but there are decent, long-suffering hindu tamils who are being punished for no fault of theirs -- the terrorism was the idea of the christists.

SL conflict is not that simple, but the hidden 3rd hand (christianism) is getting exposed more now.
But good that they are going to ban conversions in SL.

This bit:
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Christian fundamentalists boldly oppose Buddhist monks defending the freedom of religion of Buddhists targeted for unethical conversions; monks are often subjected to threats and violence. <b>In northern Sri Lanka, where Christian churches have long had a privileged presence, an alarmingly large number of helpless Hindus have been pushed to change their faith.</b> In India, Hindu monks defending the underprivileged against forced conversions are shot to death (Shanti Kaliji, Agartala; Swami Laxmanananda, Kandhamal) or hacked to pieces (Swami Ramcharan Das, Puri).<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Prabhakaran waited for Indian election results</b>
pioneer.com
PTI | New Delhi
Velupillai Prabhakaran was waiting for the results of Indian elections to plan his next strategy in the 30-year-old civil war in Sri Lanka and was apparently hoping that either the NDA or the Third Front would come to power in New Delhi, but the army there had different plans.

It has now emerged that the 54-year-old slain guerrilla leader was waiting till May 16, the day results of Lok Sabha elections were known, to decide on his and the outfit's future, but it was too late as the Sri Lankan Army had by then cut off all the escape routes.

"Till May 16, he (Prabhakaran) was hoping that someone will interfere and stop the army from entering the final 'No Fire Zone' where he was held up," Sri Lankan Army sources said.

On May 16th afternoon, LTTE announced that it would allow all civilians trapped in the area held by them to leave to safety, apparently after knowing that the Congress, which it believed was hostile to him and the outfit, was set to return to power.

Sources in the Tamil polity in Sri Lanka said the LTTE was hoping that there would be a popular upsurge for it in Tamil Nadu, where the general elections were fought on the Eelam plank, and that the Third Front or the NDA could come to power.

"This (election results) might have upset Prabhakaran and other leaders of the outfit, but they did not have time to think or plan anything. They were boxed by the Army by that time," the Tamil sources said.

The LTTE chief would have thought that the Third Front and the NDA would not be so hostile as the Congress was, they said, adding that once the people started leaving the war zone, Sri Lankan Army swiftly rescued the civilians and took them to safe zones.

AIADMK's Jayalalithaa, who was part of the Third Front, expressed support to the Sri Lankan Tamils cause and had even promised to send Indian Army to carve out Tamil Eelam from Sri Lanka if a Government of her choice came to power in New Delhi.

On May 16 afternoon, LTTE's International Relations head Selvarasa Pathmanathan issued a statement in which the outfit virtually accepted defeat and asked the "global community to save the people of Wanni."

They said Prabhakaran did not expect that the Sri Lankan forces would encircle him and his aides "so soon".

The army also got a tip off from LTTE Sea Tigers chief Soosai's wife, who was taken into custody while trying to flee the island, that Prabhakaran and the top brass were still inside the war zone.

<b>"This emboldened the Army which went all out against the Tigers and virtually encircled them in a 2 sq. Km area in the Wanni region on May 16. That gave no chance for any of the Tiger leaders to escape," </b>the sources said.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

One of Mahinda Rajapakse's (at least) 2 brothers is called Basil.
Question: is Basil an Indian, perhaps particularly Sinhalese, name? I know such a name definitely exists in Europe ("St Basil").
Anyone know what Rajapakse's parents were, or at least what their full names are? Particularly the mother.

Islamic Teachings of Sinhalese buddhist monks from Mahavamsa

Sinhala Buddhists had been drilled by their monkhood to believe that -145 if a person kills a person who is not a Buddhist, he has not killed a human being and therefore should fell no remorse-146 . Tamils, who did not follow the -145 Buddhasasana-146 (Buddhist precepts), were -145 micchaditthi-146 (wrong believers) and -145 dussila-146 (evil doers) and -145 pasuma-146 (like beasts).

Tehelka

I found myself reporting in the company of Prabakaran’s ragtag troops in their war against the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). In the bougainvillea-lined mud tracks, while attempting to photograph his boys gunning down the Indian soldiers in an ambush, I was transfixed by the memory of that handshake as I watched the blood seep from an ill-fated jawan’s head and mingle with the Jaffna dirt.

Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT)

Formation

The Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT) is a fringe, Tamil secessionist group that is believed to be functioning since the late eighties in the southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu, though its exact date of founding is not known. It has been proscribed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), 2002.

Objectives

The TNRT was formed with the objective of fighting for an independent homeland for Tamils in India. Reports also held that the TNRT would seek to eventually extend the boundaries of the Tamil nation to form a greater Tamil nation including what now comprises Tamil Nadu and the areas in Sri Lanka, which the LTTE claims constitute Tamil Eelam.

Areas of Activity and Influence

The TNRT’s areas of activity include isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu, and parts of Tamil-speaking areas in neighbouring Karnataka State.

Leadership

The Tamil National Retrieval Troops was founded by Ravi alias P. Ravichandran. He was an accused in the 1990-murder, in Chennai, of Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) general secretary Padmanabha and the 1991-assassination in Sriperambadur of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Ravi was sentenced for life by in October 1999 in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Since Ravi’s imprisonment, it is not known who has been providing leadership to TNRT cadres

Cadres

The TNRT was initially made up of some 30 cadres, predominantly from the Vanniyar community, and was set up in the late-1980s. In the early nineties this group had a sizeable presence but its support base dwindled after the LTTE was banned in India. The LTTE’s intelligence-wing chief, Pottu Amman, is believed to have personally trained some among the TNRT’s cadres. It was discovered by official sources in May 1990 that batches of Tamilians were being sent to Sri Lanka, trained there by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and smuggled back into Tamil Nadu. It was reported that this continued through end 1990 and early 1991.

Linkages

The TNRT has close ties with the LTTE. The group also has linkages with forest brigand Veerappan, which came to light when a Kannada actor, Rajkumar, was abducted by the brigand and his men for ransom in the year 2000. It is also linked to the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA), another fringe Tamil, secessionist group.

Activities

The TNRT is involved in terrorist, secessionist and smuggling activities. In December 1998, the TNRT, in what is perhaps its best-known action, joined hands with forest brigand Veerappan, attacked a police station in Vellithirippur, Tamil Nadu, and looted weapons.

Major Events

*

July 2 2002: The Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT) is proscribed under the Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA), 2002, for its involvement in terrorist activities.
*

June 12, 2002: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, a memorandum submitted to Union Home Minister L. K. Advani, urges the Union government to immediately ban the TNRT in Tamil Nadu, for its overt and covert support to Sri Lanka’s Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
*

February 28, 2001: An associate of the forest brigand Veerappan, and also a member of the militant organisation, Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT), Mathi alias Krishnamoorthy, was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force (STF), in Coimbatore. Official sources said that Mathi was arrested in the Guttialathur Reserve Forest near Sathiamangalam in Erode district.
*

July 30, 2000: Forest brigand Veerappan and his associates abduct Kannada actor Rajkumar and propose a failed swap deal, among their many demands. They seek the release of TNRT cadres Manikandan, Sathya and Muthukumar from prisons in Tamil Nadu.

Velvettiturai has since time immemorial been a fishing centre and a harbour famous for smuggling and the audacity of the Karaiyar fishing caste, and as an area where the Karaiyars were particularly well able to hold their own against the high caste Vellalas. This gives one some clues to the caste base of the militant groups, and it can be said that the LTTE is not only one of the few militant groups with a mixed-caste Karaiyar dominated rank-and-file base, but also the only one where Karaiyars are the leaders of the movement.

It was in Vvt of the mid-1970s that the pioneers of Sri Lanka Tamil militancy met frequently to organise their cadres, plan their crimes and chart their political course. Velupillai Prabhakaran, the daredevil "kid brother" (thambi) among the pioneers, already with a few murders and bank robberies to his credit, was a native Karaiyar of Vvt. So was Selvaduarai Yogachandran (alias Kuttimani) who, as far back as 1973, had been apprehended by the Sri Lanka navy while conveying a boatload of explosives. Gopalasamy Mahendrarajah (alias Mahattaya), liquidated by Prabhakaran in 1994 in the course of a power struggle within the LTTE, was also a Karaiyar from Vvt. Many others like Yogaratnam Yogi, Balakumar, Thangadurai, Sathasivam Krishnakumar (alias Kittu) and 'KP' Kumaran Padmanathan (alias Tharmalingam Shanmugam, best known for his highly successful international arms procurement operations), were all of the same caste, and all from Vadamaratchi, the area within which Vvt is located. Quite clearly there was, at this stage, a confluence of the firepower and the will-o’-the-wisp skills of the Vvt smugglers, and the ruthlessness and fanatical commitment of the militants. It is also easy to understand in retrospect the haughty defiance shown in later times by the Tiger leaders to other prominent Tamil militants and, indeed, towards the entire Vellala elite.

--

Incidentally most of the moderate tamils whom the LTTE eliminated were Vellalas and the EPRLF consisted of mainly dalit castes

Prabakaran called the EPRLF ' Pallan and Parayan Party '

Calling someone in India as Pallan or Parayan is an offence
