Nah! they will support US, . Just imagine, US make announcement on India's National TV - "Today between 8 am - 5 pm, they will issue Green Card to Muslims in India". I can tell you, it will start riots all over India and Muslims will be killing each other to be first in line in front of US consulate. You won't see same line for Haj application. <!--emo&Big Grin--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's a "civil war" over Ram in UPA: BJP

New Delhi, Sept. 19 (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday said the Ram Setu affidavit fiasco has triggered a " full-scale civil war" in the UPA.

"It's a full-scale civil war in the UPA, a signal of collapse of this unnatural alliance," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said at a news conference here.

The BJP leader, who flayed Karunanidhi for his remarks on Lord Ram, said he wondered why the ruling Congress stopped short of condemning them outright.

"Those remarks are more offensive than the affidavit (on the Ram Setu). The Congress should explain its stand on them," Javadekar said.

He alleged that the UPA would soon break apart as he cited a string of statements by leaders of the ruling alliance against one another.

"National interest has become a casualty to this civil war in the UPA which is evident from the statements of Jairam Ramesh and R K Dhawan aginst Ambika Soni. Then there is Sibal's spat with the Left. The UPA is sinking vessel," Javadekar said.

Whoa fellas.. what about Rahul Gandhi? How come no-one's listed him? If trendlines for past 50 years are to be considered, he's a shoe-in if UPA captures power again. Can't see Manmohan being allowed to carry water any more.

Capt. Kumar, congrats on top spot.

I think Indian voters and Parliamentarians realise that to run the affairs of India, experience is the key.

Capt Kumarji, Will make this one last post on Rahul, lest I sound like a broken gramaphone player.

What was Nehru's experience when his pappa Motilal used his personal friendship with MKG to oust Netaji and install him as head of INC?
And when 19 of the 20 votes went to Sardar Patel as first PM of free India?
What was the experience of Indira when (Kamraj's?) kitchen cabinet nuddged her into PMship?
What was Rajiv's experience when he took over as PM in '84?
Or how competent is Sonia G and we know that she's the real power behind PM?

I know past is not an indicator of future - but if I'm a betting man, I'll wager a nice meal in hotel of your choice (if I can't meet you, will get you and your SHQ a gift certificate) that Rahul will be next PM if UPA comes to power with more seats than 2004 Lok Sabha results.
By 2009, atleast he'd have been an MP for some 4 years which is something more than what could be said of his father/grandmother/great-grandfather. Do not unders-estimate (a) the depths to which these will stoop to retain it in the family or (b) the sycophantic culture prevelant within Congress to this day.

Rahul himself is on record stating that he could have been a PM at age 25!!.

Rahul won't be projected as PM. I suspect the regular bait-n-switch where before polls Lalu is against Pawar who's against Karat who's against Arjun who's against Karunanidhi who's against (you get the idea).............. and after elections it's one happy family with dynasty holding this coalition together. Electorate who voted individually for merit/experience could end up holding short end of the stick.

<!--emo&:argue--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/argue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='argue.gif' /><!--endemo--> The issue is impt; so, let us not leave it in between.
For Rahul to be PM, Cong should be in position to call shots which is doubtful.
RE: Nehru vs. Patel:
Patel was best in his role as Home Minister and he might have been wasted in role of PM. As ill luck would have it, he, also, did not live long enough after Independence.
Nehru did show streak of independence by representing Subhash C. Bose(if I am not wrong) in the courts much to the chargin of Gandhi.
RE: Indira Gandhi
Being host to PM Nehru, she had the longest internship.
I don't know as to how old u r but I have seen the amount of opposition she faced when she became PM and it was her incisiveness which kept her in job. Moreover, in the interim of Nehru and Indira, v had a full fledged successful PM in Lal Bahadur.
RE: Rajiv
I am glad that you have brought out Rajiv's name which only strengethens the axiom that experience is the key as he was lame duck PM after the Bofor issue and that was right in middle of his 5yrs.

Capt Kumarji,
No argument <!--emo&:argue--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/argue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='argue.gif' /><!--endemo--> - we are on same page, reading it from different ends.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->For Rahul to be PM, Cong should be in position to call shots which is doubtful.
<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes. Agree 400%. Between now and LS elections next year or 2009, it's eternity and anything can happen. <b>My entire argument is based on the assumption that Congress will form next govt.</b> And it's an assumption only and not an endorsement or my wish. When we discuss future hypothetical scenarios, we have to look at different possiblilites and Congress forming a govt is a possiblity that cannot be ruled out.
I'll post separately on this after I've responded to your post.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->RE: Nehru vs. Patel:

<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
If Patel was PM, Pakistan-POK-COK problem would not have been there. Same with vote bank culture and dynasty rule. There's a thread somewhere on IF archives about this 'what-if' scenario, I think Outlook carried main article.
Can be dug up. But it's the past.

It's true that he did not live long enough, but those who agreed to NOT make him the PM back in late 46/early 47 did not know that. And favoritism and appeasment triumphed merit. After about 60 years how far has the congress culture progressed from there? If they have, is Rahul the best person to represent Congress? Why else did they pick him?
Mind you I called Rahul's name a full week ahead him taking over command of Congress party, based solely on Congress culture.

Read Kuldip Nayar's 'Scoop - from Partition to Present' and it has some interesting chapters as to how IG was written off in early ears. If I'm not mistaken, she was referred to as '<i>goongi gudiya</i>' (deaf/dumb doll) by the very Congressmen who later found that their political survival lay in hitching with Gandhi name, clout and wealth.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Moreover, in the interim of Nehru and Indira, v had a full fledged successful PM in Lal Bahadur.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
True. And Gulzarilal Nanada too. Twice I might add.
While Shastri unfortunately died early, Manmohan will just be eased out, I really don't see him as second term PM of Cong govt.

Agree with you here too. And probabily majority of the country thinks same too. Unfortunately, it'll be the Congress high command who'll call the shot. And guess who the high command is?

Let's turn the discussion around, shall we and discuss some scenarios:

Scenario I
NDA forms the next govt:
NDA (same as 98) wins 20% more seat than last LS elections at expense of it's other alliance partners and/or UPA block.
Who'll be PM? Modi? Advani? Vajapayee? Rajnath? Sushma? Shourie?

Scenario II
UPA forms the next govt:
Congress wins 20% more seat than last LS elections at expense of it's other alliance partners or NDA block.
Who'll be PM? Manmohan? Sonia? Rahul? Priyanaka? Pranab? Pawar? Patil? Arjun? Lallu? Karat?

Scenario III
Sundry list: Under what combination could these make it to PM kursi?
Naidu? Chautala? Jayalalitha? Mayawati? Abdulla? Karnunanidhi?

Others list different scenarios/combinations?
