The attack on the Samjhauta Express has cast a cloud over the talks Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Ahmed is scheduled to have with Kashmiri separatist leaders on February 22.
All major separatist leaders, including Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, JKLF chief Yasin Malik, Hurriyat <i>hardliner</i> Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Shabir Shah, are in New Delhi for talks with Kasuri. Though they are meeting the Pakistani Foreign Minister separately, all of them, except Geelani, are seeking participation of the Kashmiri leadership in the ongoing peace process. Geelani, on the other hand, will reiterate his rejection of the dialogue process.
However, the attack on the train that is seen as the symbol of the peace process seems to have upset the separatist plans. "I hope that the blasts do not disrupt the peace process, " the Mirwaiz told The Indian Express. "Nevertheless, the Hurriyat will go with a positive frame of mind and share its opinion on Kashmir with Kasuri sahib." The Mirwaiz will be leading a four-member delegation, comprising Bilal Gani Lone, former Hurriyat chairman Moulana Abbas Ansari and Agha Syed Hassan. Sources said that the<b> high intensity explosive like the RDX was used in a very small quantity since the idea was not to blow up the railway wagons but cause a devastating fire. </b>
"It was an incendiary device which was used in the blasts. The low intensity explosives were ideal for making devices which cause fire. A small quantity of high intensity explosive was mixed to give propulsion to the fire so that maximum damage can be inflicted. The blast mechanism was devised to suit the conditions in a moving train," said Additional Director-General of Haryana Police, Vikas Narain Rai who is overseeing the SIT probe.
Sources said that had the perpetrators used only a high intensity explosive like the RDX or the TNT it would have probably blown off a part of the wagon like the roof. "The damage then would have been caused in a limited area. In fact, many lives could have been saved in that event," they said.

The bombers of Attari Special Samjhauta Express could have crossed the border on the same day travelling in the same train. According to The Pioneer investigation, 92 unaccounted for passengers crossed over from Attari into Pakistan on Monday morning on the same train, which caught fire after blasts the night earlier. The indication about this major security faux pas came into light while tallying the list of passengers released by the Northern Railway, and the list of passengers crossing Attari received by the Government Railway Police, Haryana.
<b>According to Superintendent of Police (Railways), Haryana, Bharti Arora, 620 passengers of Samjhuata Express, who had supposedly boarded train at the Old Delhi railway station, crossed Attari station on Monday after the blasts. The train, which arrived at Attari had in fact 626 passengers on board but six were sent back as their passports were burnt in the blasts. </b>
<b>However, the railway authorities in Delhi, according to their Press release, had made tickets for only 604 passengers on that fateful night -- 340 in general category and 264 in reserved. Of these 604, 64 passengers died in the blast and 12 injured were brought to Safdarjung hospital in the Capital for treatment for burns and injuries. That should have left 528 on board. Then how did 626 passengers arrive in Attari.</b>
According to the Immigration records, 725 passengers were allowed to cross over to Pakistan. The break-up being 620 arriving by the train from Delhi and 105 joining them at Attari. They were allowed to cross over because they presumably possessed valid travel documents.
From where did these 92 extra passengers arrive. The train is not supposed to take passengers on board in between Delhi and Attari stations. The train has an administrative stop at Ambala, where railway officials change duties. After the blasts, the train was stopped at Deewana at 11.50 pm where the injured and the dead were evacuated. Thereafter, the train restarted its journey at 5 am on February 19. It stopped at Ambala on way to Attari.
The Haryana Police, in whose jurisdiction the blasts took place, did not carry a check of the number of passengers travelling for the onward journey either at Deewana or Ambala. When asked who were these 92 passengers, Bharti Arora said, "Ask the Railway officials at Delhi who issued the tickets and allowed people to board the train." When asked if the Haryana Police, which is investigating the case, did not verify this fact with their counterparts in Delhi Police or the Railways, she said, "It is the duty of the railway officials at Attari and Delhi to tally the list and explain the difference."

Chandigarh: Crucial links have been established by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing terror blasts in the India-Pakistan peace train near Panipat last month and the Haryana police are claiming they are close to a breakthrough in the case.
Investigators from Haryana, Delhi and Mumbai have zeroed on Indore city in Madhya Pradesh from where it has been established that the suitcases used in the twin blasts were bought.
The role of some activists of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) from Indore and nearby areas was also under scanner.
Sixty-eight people, mostly Pakistani nationals, were killed and several injured in the low-intensity blasts on the Samjhauta-Attari special train February 18 near Panipat town in Haryana, 165 km from here.
A senior Haryana police official said concrete links had been established about the material related to the blasts but the real culprits behind it were yet to be pinned.
"We should be in a position to give vital leads in this investigations within two-three days if everything falls into place," the police official said on condition of anonymity.
After tracking the suitcases used for keeping explosives in the train to Indore, the tailor who stitched the inner lining and a shopkeeper who sold the plastic bottles in which the liquid flammable material was kept have been identified. They are said to have given some vital clues to the investigators.

Something odd about these two that were arrested. The facts are not yet established that the suitcases used were purchased from them. The other charge is that the cover was stitched by one of them and there is no cooperation from these two. Is the real charge that the harness to hold the plastic bottles was also stitched at this shop? Were these folks under impression that they were helping the transborder trade/movement in liquor?

Even the probe team was unable to establish whether the plastic bottle of Sourabh plastic of Indore found in the suitcase was actually purchased from the city or not as the product is being distributed from here to places situated upto a distance of 400-500 km, they said.

I think what happened was the terrorists came to the store run by Thakur and purchased the suitcases or might even have come there with the suitcases to have the covers stitched. They wanted special stitching for compartments to carry the bottles and the poor Hufiaza got roped in as the tailor. The folks probably did not have receipt as it was a cash sale. Now the duo is not cooperating as they are worried of furthere implications. The way it is going next to be rounded up will be the Aligarh newpaper wallah.
Looks like quite few clues that point away from TSP have been thrown around.
