QUOTEGorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 27 (ANI): Violence erupted in Gorakhpur on Saturday, after a young man was stabbed to death during a minor scuffle between Hindus and Muslims.

Police said Hindus and Muslims clashed after 24-year-old Rajkumar Agrahari was killed when he had an argument with men taking out Moharram procession on Friday night.

The mob later damaged cars, attacked various shops and burnt them.

Eyewitnesses said that the police had to resort to a baton-charge to disperse the crowd.

"There were some anti-nationals in the mob. When everyone started walking, they attacked the Hindus. Their houses have been vandalised and their cars have been attacked. A car has been burnt. The situation is worsening here," said an eyewitness.
At least a dozen people were injured in the scuffle. (ANI)

QUOTECommunities clash in Jabalpur, curfew imposed
[ 27 Jan, 2007 1502hrs ISTPTI ]

JABALPUR: Curfew was imposed in six areas and prohibitory orders clamped across the city as tension erupted between two communities following damage to posters and a gate put up for a Jain festival.

As a precautionary measure, curfew was imposed in six localities of Kotwali, Lordganj, Omti, Belbagh, Hanumantal and Gohalpur late on Friday night to avert any untoward incident, district collector sanjay dubey said.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 were also imposed as the curfew-bound areas, where shops and business centres remained closed, were barricaded, he said.

Rapid action force (RAF), special armed force and homeguards personnel were deployed in strength, while a case was registered against unknown persons but no arrest has been made so far, police sources said.

Tension gripped the city after tearing of posters and damage to a decorated gate put up for 'Gajrath Mahotsava' being observed by the Jain community in Bada Fuwara area on the intervening night of January 25-26, they said.

Trouble deepened as Jain community accused Muslims of committing the act ahead of the Moharrum procession slated to pass through the route, they said. Members of Jain community, including MLA Sharad Jain and former state minister Anchal Sonkar, staged a dharna while Muslims held a meeting at the local mufti's house.

As efforts by the administration to resolve the situation failed, curfew was clamped and prohibitory orders were imposed in the city where the situation was tense but under control, the sources added.

hmm, seems like "religion of peace" is on a spree this time of the year.

Last week and this week we had 4 clashes, one in Indore, one in Jabalpur, one in Gorakhpur, one in Bangalore and in all of them Muslims have been the aggressors once again confirming G.Sub's thesis that Muslims start most of the riots in India despite being a minority, funnily enuf we never hear anything about Sikhs attacking Hindus or vice versa when each others processions are taken out.

Here is the deal about Gorakhpur. Gorakhpur region is probably the last standing Hindutva fort in the Mughalistan belt, after the fall of Nepal. Despite the change in demographics, this region remains a bastion of staunch Hindutva sentiment.

Historically, Gorakshanath Math of Gorakhpur, has not only been a primary center of Hathyog, but also of Hindutva. Math has never hesitated to play an active role in Hindu protection, ever since the Islamic invasions and sultanate times. (Even establishment of a Hindu Kingdom in Nepal was from the inspiration of Gorakhnath. Today too, like Indian Rupee has a picture of Gandhi, Nepal Rupee carries the icon of Goraksha). In modern history, during British rule, Gorakhpur was a very actice center of anti-British activities, particularly militantic. Recall Chauri Chaura, that is in Gorakhpur.

Since independence, Math has played a very active role in taking up Hindutva issues. In fact, after death of Veer Savarkar, Math provided leadership to the Hindu Mahasabha for a long time. Issues such as Ban on Cow Slaughter, were led by Math in 60s. (After all the name of Math is Goraksh - 'cow protector'). Previous Mahant of the Math, Swami Avaidyanath was founding president of Ram Janma Bhumi Nyas, and amongst the founding leaders of VHP. In 90s, Math was the primary center of the Ayodhya movement. (Ayodhya is only 100 miles away). Even the first ever Saraswati Shishu Mandir (RSS supported schools) was started in Gorakhpur, to counter the missionary schools, and spread to the rest of India.

Math has always enjoyed a very strong popular support (as well as muscle power and wealth). Every single time, Gorakhpur has been represented in Loksabha by the Pradhan Sannyasi/Mahant of the Math, in older times even unopposed. In surrounding areas, Math nominees usually win all the MP and MLA seats very comfortably. After Ram Janmabhumi issue, Math has come very close to BJP and Mahants have been contesting and winning on BJP's ticket. The present Mahant (junior) of the Math is Yogi Adityanath, also BJP MP since last decade.

All through, Gorakhpur region has been a thorn in Congress-Islamist-Missionary-Communist designs, but Math has been successful in suppressing these. Even powerfuls like Indira Gandhi failed to suppress the Math. However, since the last decade, a power shift can be seen. Two reasons in my opinion: a) Nepal royalty used to be one pillar of strength behind the activities of Math. Royalty itself has weakened, and now there is leftist surge in Nepal, with which Nepal leverage is over for the Math. b) changing demographics. Muslim population has surged steeply even in rural areas as well as in Nepal border areas. This is reflected in the reducing victory margins of Math nominees in various elections.

Muslims supported by Mulayam Singh, or vice versa, see this a proper time to challenge Math. We should see this series of riots as a ground-setting for the coming elections in short term, and 'liberating' Gorakhpur in long term. Administration is completely bent to destroy the name and respect of Math and its Mahants. Also how media is covering the event must be noticed.

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: As the communal violence in Gorakhpur escalated and spread to the neighbouring districts, the State Government on Monday removed District Magistrate Hari Om and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raja Srivastava.

Curfew was extended to the Gorakhnath police station area. Curfew was imposed in Rajghat, Kotwali and Tewaripur when violence broke out on Saturday. One person was killed in the clashes on Saturday night.

Even as the situation was officially described as tense but under control, security was tightened in Gorakhpur and neighbouring towns in eastern Uttar Pradesh to ensure that the 10th of Moharram ("Yaum-e-Ashoora") passed off peacefully on Tuesday.

While Mr. Hari Om has been replaced by Sitapur DM Rakesh Goel, Special Task Force SSP S.K. Bhagat has succeeded Mr. Srivastava. Both assumed charge late on Monday. According to the Secretary, Appointments and Personnel, Umesh Sinha, Mr. Hari Om has been placed on the waiting list.

The decisions were taken at a high-level review meeting called by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav at his residence.

Protests against arrest

The violence in Gorakhpur on Monday came after protests by Hindu Yuva Vahini activists against the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Yogi Aditya Nath. The Yogi was arrested on Sunday after he addressed a meeting in defiance of prohibitory orders.

Reports said three to four godowns belonging to members of a particular community were torched by the goons, who also set ablaze a truck and tractor-trolley near the Gorakhnath temple. [this particular community seems to be Hindus since it took place near the mandir and anyway the very use "particular community" should make it obvious who the perpetrators and the victims are]

Violence and arson were also reported from the neighbouring districts of Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria, Basti and Siddhartnagar. Protests by the Hindu Yuva Vahini activists and BJP supporters were also held in Varanasi. The Special Secretary, Home, Manju Chandra, told journalists that two persons were arrested by the police on Sunday on the charge of inciting violence.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Lalji Tandon, said the communal violence was sponsored by the Samajwadi Party Government for electoral gains.

QUOTEBJP leaders arrested on way to Gorakhpur

PTI | Gorakhpur
Three BJP leaders were today arrested on their way to this violence-hit town as authorities gave no relaxation in curfew and deployed para-military forces to deal with the agitation sparked up following the local party MP's arrest.

The three BJP leaders -- former union minister Santosh Gangwar and party leaders Dharmendra Deo and Satyaprakash Ahluwalia--sent to Gorakhpur by the BJP Central leadership to take stock of the situation were arrested from Gorakhpur-bound Vaishali Express, a report from Barabanki said.

With no relaxation in curfew in Gorakhnath, Kotwali, Rajghat and Tiwaripur areas, new SSP SK Bhagat gave a stern warning to the agitations and said that those found indulging in violence and threatening peace would be arrested under the National Security Act.

Taking a serious view of the developments, Uttar Pradesh Government transferred Inspector General of Police (Gorakhpur zone) Vinay Verma.

Bhagat made it clear that the local BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, whose arrest on Sunday had led to violence, will not be released till the situation became normal. Elements demanding his release through violence and by damaging public property would be sternly dealt with, he said.

Meanwhile, an indefinite bandh called by BJP and its allies here and in adjoining Basti division.

QUOTEHolding A lax Gorakhpur administration responsible for communal clashes in the city, state Congress and the BJP on Sunday said that their apprehensions that the communal atmosphere would be vitiated for political gains in the coming Vidhan Sabha elections had proved correct.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, UP Congress committee spokesman, Dwijendra Tripathi said that the communal tension in Gorakhpur could have been nipped in the bud, but for the dubious intentions of the Samajwadi Party, which was bent on engineering communal riots to polarise Muslim votes. He alleged that the Gorakhpur trouble-makers enjoyed patronage of the SP.

Tripathi regretted that the entire government machinery and bureaucracy was at the service of a ‘manager’ of the SP and busy singing ‘happy birthday’ to Amar Singh and welcoming some of his filmy friends at Vindhyachal.

Demanding an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the kin of those who died in the clashes and immediate arrest of the culprits, state BJP president, Keshari Nath Tripathi said that the appeasement policy of the SP was responsible for the clashes. What was the police doing when rioters pulled out Rajkumar Agrahari from the police vehicle and killed him in the presence of district administration officials, he asked.

Tripathi alleged that the police, at the behest of the SP, were providing shelter to the trouble-makers while BJP leaders, workers and Yogi Adityanath were being arrested and implicated in fake cases.

He said that miscreants had beaten up some Hindus in police presence while the procession of Moharrum was being taken out in Kazipur area on January 24 and the FIR was lodged only after the BJP threatened an agitation. The very next day, the same miscreants misbehaved with some women in Khoonipur Sahabganj locality while Agrahari was killed on January 26 and later, houses of Hindus were set on fire, Tripathi said. The police acted only on January 27 and imposed curfew after the BJP held a demonstration.

Tripathi demanded a high-level inquiry to probe the communal clashes and reiterated his demand of president’s rule in the state.

QUOTETense Gorakhpur
The Pioneer Edit Desk
UP Government to blame
That the sporadic clashes in Gorakhpur and its adjoining areas in eastern Uttar Pradesh since the evening of Republic Day have not erupted into vicious communal violence is a comment on the wisdom of the people and not the commitment of the Samajwadi Party Government to maintain social harmony and peace. Indeed, had it not been for the initial ham-handed response of the civil administration and police of Gorakhpur, who obviously acted in the manner they did at Lucknow's behest, to a minor incident of stone-pelting, the region would not have been smouldering with rage today. While 'secular' politicians and their parties, most notably Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party, seeking to fish in Gorakhpur's troubled waters, have been quick to lay the blame at the BJP's doors, their version of events does not necessarily reflect the truth. On the contrary, their attempt to give a communal twist to an otherwise inconsequential issue is nothing but a pathetic effort to consolidate Muslim votes with an eye to the coming Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh. For, it is entirely coincidental that the skirmish - which had nothing to do with either Hindu anger or Muslim animus - on the evening of January 26 should have occurred near a Muharram procession. Some Muslims promptly made it out to be an attack on their community; Hindus responded with matching belligerence. The best way to contain and defuse inter-community tension is to rope in the services of the local MP and MLAs, along with other politicians, and hold them partly accountable for any breach of peace. BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, without being prompted to do so, tried to undertake such a mission but was placed under preventive detention by the police. Their argument: Allowing him access to the troubled areas would further exacerbate the situation. This is, of course, balderdash and calculated to paint the BJP in the bleakest of communal colours to instigate a Muslim backlash. Even if it were to be true, instead of arresting Yogi Adityanand, who is immensely popular in the region, the police could have asked him to remain confined to the Gorakhpur mutt. It chose not to do so, and thus invited trouble.

This is not to suggest that the mindless violence witnessed in Gorakhpur and elsewhere for nearly a week is justified or the correct response to the administration's delinquent behaviour. Nor is it to suggest that the BJP should abdicate its responsibility and allow Mr Yadav and his cohorts to leverage the communal tension for political gains. Yogi Adityanand must ensure that his supporters do not add fuel to the fire; the BJP must restrain its cadre and demonstrate that it can act in a responsible manner in the face of grave provocation. This is an excellent opportunity to expose the Samajwadi Party and its leadership which, increasingly unnerved by the prospects of a drubbing in the Assembly election, is trying to polarise voters along communal lines. The Samajwadi Party cannot be allowed to succeed in this diabolical game. Meanwhile, the Centre would do well to ensure there are enough forces at the State Government's disposal. If it fails to do so, Mr Yadav will use it as a convenient cover for calculated inaction and worse. It would be a pity if the Congress, propelled by its own vote-bank politics, were to succumb to the temptation of emulating the Samajwadi Party's tactics.

QUOTEIt's Yogi’s show all the way
HT Correspondent
Lucknow/Gorakhpur, February 3, 2007
Yogi Adityanath seems to be lording it over the Gorakhpur district jail. In recent days, the prison has looked more like a temple with people lining up to have ‘Yogi’s darshan’ and getting prasad too! Devotional music and discourses too are happening with langar being thrown in for good measure.

Gorakhpur traders have stuffed the BJP MP’s barrack with fruits and other edibles, which he is distributing as ‘prasad’ to his supporters. What’s more, Yogi, it is learnt, has also formed about six committees inside the jail.

“The discipline committee has been entrusted with the task of ensuring discipline among jail inmates. The other committees include yagna committee, legal committee, food committee, entertainment committee and medical committee,” a source informed HT.

A sadhu from Ayodhya, Manav Kokil Das has been made in-charge of the entertainment committee. He has been entrusted with the task of organising bhajans and discourses for the jail inmates.

Also, two top doctors of Gorakhpur -- city MLA Dr Radha Mohan Das Agarwal and MLC Dr YD Singh, who too were arrested after violence rocked the city recently, have set up a makeshift clinic inside the jail and also started seeing people who come to meet Yogi.

“It felt as though one was visiting a temple-cum clinic,” a source said. Sources said that over five thousand people, of which majority were women and children, had lined up before the jail on Friday.

The jail officials opened the gate and allowed everyone to enter the high security area in which the barrack of Yogi was located.

Earlier, MLA and fellow jail inmate Amarmani Tripathi made arrangements to entertain Yogi and his aides.

The other day, the saffron leader was given the taste of jailhouse rock (albeit the Bhojpuri version of it). Regaling the ‘select’ audience with some Bhojpuri numbers was Nandu Mishra and Party, a local favourite. The venue was Shatabdi House (barrack).

Adityanath and his supporters are in jail on charges of disturbing peace and violating prohibitory orders. Tripathi, considered very powerful for his proximity with the powers that be, happens to be there in connection with the Madhumita murder case.

Moreover, the city mayor visited the jail regularly, overseeing arrangements for the saffron leader. Also, Adityanath was provided with mobile phones and other facilities.

All this and more were conveyed in a complaint to the DGP by Samajwadi Party (SP) district president Chandrabali Yadav and others.

Talking to Hindustan Times, senior jail superintendent of Gorakhpur district jail Shashi Srivastava said no one was allowed to meet Adityanath on Saturday.

In reply to a question, she said earlier the visitors were allowed to meet according to the rules and regulations of the jail manual. She denied that any party was organised on the jail premises and visitors had access to the barrack of Yogi.

Ayodhya, Feb 3: Furious over the imprisonment of BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, VHP supporters and dharmacharyas today demanded his unconditional release within 24 hours after which they said they would take some "decisive action".

"The sant samaj will be forced to take some decisive action in case of delay in the release of Adityanath," a resolution passed during a meeting held in the Digamber Akshar here said today.

They said they would not hesitate in taking up arms for the cause.

Mahant Kishore Das of Nashik, who chaired the meeting, termed it as a wrong step at the wrong time, while Mahant Suresh Das of Digamber Akhara said that the arrest was a result of state government's fear in the face of massive support to Vishva Hindu Sammelan organised by the Go Raksha Peeth in Gorakhpur recently.

If somebody thought Yogi Adityanath is an old sadhu, reality is quite the opposite. A Physics graduate, he is in his mid 30s. In fact he was the youngest MP, at age 26, in the 12th Lok Sabha. He was doing his Phd, but dropped out to take up Math responsibilities. He has written a well researched book : "Yaugik Shatkarm and Hathyog"

His brief bio from Lok Sabha's website. My comments in red.

VHP leaders, including the Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath, subsequently dined with the 'reformed' Hindus to make them feel equivalent to other Hindus, as the missionaries target the practice of "untouchability" in Valmiki Dalits as their weapon for ensuring conversions. The leaders aim to bring back at least 80,000 Christian converts back by next year.

Why Muslim hate him ?
QUOTELucknow, December 22
With the new mood in the BJP, Ram Lalla may have to live in a makeshift temple for many years to come. However, Ram Lalla has a saviour in party MP from Gorakhpur Yogi Adityanath. He is holding a parallel Vishwa Hindu Maha Sammelan in Gorakhpur with the one-point agenda, the construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya.

Virtually defying the party, the MP from Gorakhpur has gone ahead with his programme exactly on the same dates December 22 to 24. He has invited 10 lakh saints and sadhus to participate in the dharm sabha to be held at the Digvijay Nath Conference on the Gorakhnath Temple premises.

This article was published before arrest, which tells who are behind - COmmunist and Muslims. It was well planned.
