QUOTEThe situation in Nasik, which witnessed violence during a protest against the alleged vandalisation of a statue of BR Ambedkar in Kanpur, remained tense but under control even as Republican Party of India called for a bandh in Nasik on Thursday to protest the desecration and the killing of a Dalit youth during the demonstrations.

The situation in Nasik is tense but under control, police said adding, security has been beefed up and State Reserve Police Force personnel have been deployed in the trouble-torn areas.

Nasik unit of the RPI and other organisations have given a call for shutdown on Thursday to protest the alleged desecration and the killing of Rangnath Shankar Dhale (23) who was beaten to death on Wednesday by a mob after they found him pelting stones at vehicles.

Activists of Dalit groups and various factions of RPI damaged about 100 vehicles and set on fire one Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus at Sinnar-Phata in the district on Wednesday.

Statue vandalisation suspect held in KanpurQUOTEOne of the main suspects in the alleged vandalisation of a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in Kanpur, which triggered widespread violent protests by Dalits across Maharashtra, was arrested on Thursday night and efforts were on to nab two of his accomplices.

Arun Valmiki, a resident of Sarojini Nagar, was arrested from Kanpur and has confessed to damaging the Ambedkar statue in Kakadeo area on Wednesday along with two associates, Senior Superintendent of Police P C Meena told PTI.

According to Meena, Valmiki told the police during interrogation that he and his friends were drunk at the time and they had no political affiliations.

The questioning of Valmiki brought to light the names of two more accused and police are conducting raids across the city in search of the duo, Meena said.

Seven persons, who were earlier taken into custody, were let off after interrogation, he added.

When around three hundred died in train blast in Mumbai, no reaction, whole India was so calm. Why this incidence? Who is behind?

Most interesting, yahoo group which is run by so-called vocal dalits and Muslims are very silent on Dalit riots. Same group was very vocal about Malegoan blast and Muslim involvement, Who openly demand Hindus should leave India.

I have been reading some 'intellectual' material on the dalit issue and this is what is being recommended. By the time UPA is done 'dalit' identity will be solidly identified.

That Dalits have come a long way since the days BR Ambedkar edited Mooknayak (Leader of the Mute or the voiceless) is evident from the sporadic but widespread instances of arson in large parts of Maharashtra on account of an incident of defacement in faraway Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, of his statue. Three persons have been killed, 70 injured and nearly 1500 preventive arrests made since the unfortunate act of iconoclasm in Kanpur, which may have more to do with intra-Dalit politics than any assault on Dalit pride. Indeed, an attack did take place, on November 19 in Khairlanji, Maharashtra, where a Dalit family was brutally attacked and some of its members killed. True, there were protests; but these did not lead to a sudden upsurge of Dalit passion degenerating into crude violence across the State - although, on the face of it, it should have been provocation enough. Instead, what got Maharashtra's Dalits agitated was the disfigurement of Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur. Ironically, it is a Dalit, Arun Valmiki, who has been arrested for the Kanpur incident - according to reports, he has admitted to having done so in an inebriated state. Even if it is to be conceded that Valmiki made his confession under duress, it hardly rules out the growing perception that a turf war between two regional Dalit political parties, the Republican Party of India in Maharashtra and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, has led to this bizarre denouement. UP goes to polls early next year and consolidation of Dalit votes does help certain political parties - especially those whose leaders are fighting the Indian legal system with their backs to the wall. The Dalit leaders are, of course, not helping the cause of their own votaries by engineering violence to attain their objectives. There are enough splinters of Dalit parties - at the last count there were eight groups claiming to be the "real" Republican Party of India - to want to fish in troubled waters.

The more fundamental question that the conflagration in Maharashtra raises has to do with the representational nature of Dalit politics and its over-emphasis on symbols. Intended as non-verbal edification of poor Dalits about the greatness of Ambedkar, the mushrooming of his statues - particularly in Uttar Pradesh - could be a treatment worse than the disease of Dalit backwardness, exploitation and penury. There are no reasons to question Ambedkar's contribution towards the development of the Indian state. However, to commemorate his historical achievements with statues - and statues alone - does point to a definitive loss of perception and understanding of his political philosophy. Moreover, the building of colossal concrete edifices - amounting to nothing but dogmatic reassertions - to remind people of his political legacy prevents further debate on Ambedkar's philosophy. Indeed, the more the statues, the greater the possibilities of Dalit mobilisation on the basis of symbols through their almost predictable disfigurements, as happened recently, and may occur again. Such politics defeats the very purpose of Dalit empowerment.

Second, Dalits have become their own enemies, by not recognizing the creamy layer. The fruits of reservation won't bear with the creamy layer choking the Dalit underclass. And for the Maharashtra government, the lesson is not to remain in denial about Dalit persecution. The Khairlanji killers must hang, and the Dalits must be reassured about a compassionate, pro-Dalit state. 

Zero tolerance should be for any crime.

Police said the Dalits resorted to stone-pelting and torched at least two buses in Mannaekkelli in Humnabad taluk of Bidar district. Violence later spread to Bidar town, where scores of people resorted to stone-pelting damaging three to four buses.

Dalits defy age-old ban, enter temple in Bhilwara QUOTEBhilwara, Dec 12: More than 400 Dalits together entered a temple in Bhilwara district's Suliya village peacefully on Tuesday, defying the age-old ban on their entry there, enforced by the influential Gurjars.

The Dalits were led by priest Bhopa Hazari Balai into the sanctum sanctorum of the Chamunda temple in Suliya village and offered prayers. Social activists Aruna Roy, Mamta Jaitely and others were present during the entry and expressed solidarity with dalits cause.

Dalits of Suliya village were supported by their brethren from Pali, Byavar, Jawaja village, Tilonia, Bhim and Rajsamand. Dalit victims of upper caste atrocities in Pali and other places were also present to support the cause.

The influential and majority Gurjars of the village had decided to oppose the Dalits' entry into the temple. The Dalits had decided on the entry plan at their meeting on November 18 under the banner of Dalit Adivasi Adhikar Abhiyan.

In place of refering them just "upper caste" they should write OBC, why media is biased and creating confusion.

11 chargesheeted in Khairlanji murder caseQUOTEThe 11 have been chargehseeted under charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly with deadly weapons and outraging the modesty of women. However, the CBI did not confirm that the victims were raped.

The 15-page chargesheet has been filed in a court in Bhandara in Maharashtra. Those chargesheeted belong to Kumbi and Kalar communities, which are notified under Other Backward Classes.
Investigation against remaining 36 will continue, CBI officials said.

For Bhaiyalal Bhotmange justice is still incomplete. Though the CBI, looking into the brutal killing of his family members, has filed its chargesheet against 11 people, the one conclusion that Bhotmange is not willing to accept is that his wife Surekha and daughter Priyanka were not raped.

It was brutal but the way Dalit politican used and abused incidence was worst. Some reports say, they were stripped for photos for media by Dalit politicans.
