In the midst of a controversy, the national song Vande Mataram was sung across the country on Thursday to celebrate its centenary. However, several minority educational institutions, including in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Rajasthan, abstained from joining.
According to reports from BJP-ruled states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Rajasthan, the song written was sung in educational institutions and specially organised programmes at 11 am as per an order of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry.
The order of the Ministry, which made it clear that singing of Vande Mataram in schools and colleges would not be mandatory, had sparked a controversy with some Muslim leaders saying the song went against Islamic teachings about not worshipping any person or object.
At a function in Delhi, HRD Minister Arjun Singh joined a large number of students in the singing of the national song, while reports of isolated protests by some Muslim bodies came in from Madhya Pradesh.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit along with her Cabinet colleagues and top government officials also participated in the centenary celebrations. MLAs from BJP and Congress, besides senior officials and entire Secretariat staff assembled at Delhi Secretariat at 11 am recited the national song.
The national song was also sung in the Delhi government schools to mark the occasion.
Students of madrasas in Muslim-dominated areas of Rajasthan defied the BJP government's order to observe Vande Mataram Day by not singing the song while in other schools celebrations were held.
In NDA-ruled Jharkhand, Chief Minister Arjun Munda led scores of BJP leaders and thousands of party workers to sing the national song shortly after 9 am.
In Gujarat, the collective singing of Vande Mataram was organised at the State Secretariat in Gandhinagar and across the state even as heavy rains prompted the authorities to shut several schools.
The government had also sent special audio cassettes containing the recording of the song to all government institutions to help them sing the song.
Talking to PTI, secretary of Jamiat-Ulma-e-Hind (Gujarat), Maulvi Ajinuddin said that students of madrassas in the city and across the state would not be singing the song.
"We have not passed any instructions to madrassas to prevent students from singing Vande Mataram. It is the national song but it is not the most important feature for a Muslim. We are patriots even if we do not sing Vande Mataram," the Maulvi said.
The national song was also sung indoors because of the continous rains at the Ahmedabad Collectorate. "The rains had forced us to organise the singing of the song inside the main conference room of the collectorate," said D Thara, the district collector. "About 200 officials of the collectorate had participated in the singing of the national song," she added.
In Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, where the singing of the song was optional, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and MPCC chief Prabha Rau joined senior party leaders to celebrate the occassion at the party headquarters.
Shiv Sena and its affiliate organizations, including its labour wing Bharatiya Kamgar Sena, organised several programmes to mark the occasion.
Over 50 lakh students of Chhattisgarh, including those of Muslim institutions, participated in the mass singing of Vande Mataram.
Schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu participated in the singing of Vande Mataram. In Chennai, collective singing of the song was organised in almost all educational institutions.
In the midst of the controversy, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had, on Wednesday, rejected a petition seeking mandatory singing of Vande Mataram in all government, semi-government and educational institutions in Uttar Pradesh.
Reports from Punjab and Haryana said students of various schools participated in the singing of the national song. The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, which had initially asked the Sikhs not to sing the song, later changed its mind and said it had no problem if the song was recited by the community, 'as it only helps in binding the nation together'.
Reports from Amritsar said that the song was sung even in the SGPC-run institutions.
As the BJP's top brass huddled up to discuss internal issues at its National Executive in Dehradun, senior party leader Vinay Katyar condemned 'fatwas' over singing of Vande Mataram and advocated action against defiance over the national song.

Dehradun, September 7: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's surprise absence at an event marking Vande Mataram centenary on Thursday supplied new ammunition to the BJP to attack the ruling party as it announced plans to step up its campaign on the national song ahead of Assembly polls in several states.
At its office bearers' meeting, the saffron party decided to form a special committee to work out its Vande Mataram strategy in the light of Gandhi skipping a Congress event commemorating the centenary of the adoption of the national song.
Party leaders Arun Jaitely, M Vankaiah Naidu, Sanjay Joshi and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will be part of a special committee on the BJP's Vande Mataram campaign, a party source said.
"The BJP can surely benefit from Gandhi's moves as it tries to rework its nationalist agenda," a party leader said.
The office bearers' meeting hours before the start of the national executive also focussed on the BJP's election plans especially for Uttar Pradesh, where the party has promised to mandate Vande Mataram if voted to power there.
Emerging out of the meeting, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi and M Venkaiah Nadu flayed the Congress president for not participating in the group singing of Vande Mataram at her party office in Delhi.
Naidu insisted that Gandhi's absence during the singing of the national song was an instance of vote-bank politics.

I have a copy of A R Rehaman's Vande Maatram and it's pretty good and would recommend it as a buy to anyone interested. How come this never became issue when A R sang it couple at least 5 or so years ago. Why are mullas coming out of woodwork now? What next, fatwa on Iqbal for '<i>Saare Jahan se achha</i>'?

Pioneer celebrates centenary of national song
The national song is nation's pride. Vande Mataram is a symbol of a vibrant India, an icon that binds the past with the present and the glorious future.Â
To reiterate the spirit of the song and the ethos of nationhood encapsulated in it for decades, The Pioneer group on Thursday declared that September 7 every year would now be celebrated as Vande Mataram Day.
Group chairman and Editor of The Pioneer Chandan Mitra made an announcement to this effect at the centenary celebrations of the national song organised by The Pioneer group and attended by members of the newspaper, Pioneer Media School (PMS) and the Internet division.
The gala function was marked by some soulful rendition of spirited songs, including Vande Mataram by a 10-member choir of the PMS.
The function on Thursday was a culmination of a high-pitched campaign that The Pioneer ran over the past fortnight unveiling and rediscovering the many facets of the national song.
The impact of its resonance, the spirit that catapulted Vande Mataram onto the centre-stage of the national cultural renaissance during the freedom struggle was also rediscovered. We also pondered over the many recent trivial blabbering and attempted to dispel the pointless debates by providing a platform to historians, political scientists and social activists.
As Dr Mitra pointed out, "At a time when many, including some media houses, were attempting to ridicule our efforts, we were busy trying to reinforce this symbol of our civilisation which has been celebrated down the ages."
Highlighting the need to "celebrate" the song at a time when the media industry would be more keen on chasing advertisers, Dr Mitra said: "To reiterate that the essence of Indianhood is encapsulated in these two powerful words at a time when we are under numerous social and cultural assaults, is very timely and relevant."
In an age when commercial compulsions have pushed newspapers far away from even acknowledging the many social responsibilities they are supposed to espouse, the small effort by The Pioneer in reinforcing the spirit of cultural nationalism is truly significant. For a whole generation of 21st century India, entrenched in modern values, The Pioneer has taken upon itself the task of instilling the idea of appreciation and empathy with the past. "And, there is nothing religious or communal about it," asserted Dr Mitra.
The Pioneer's Consulting Editor Swapan Dasgupta and one of the most articulate proponents of cultural nationalism also reiterated the "ethos that has been passed on for generations through Vande Mataram."
"The contexts and milieu in which the song has been sung - from the time it was composed in 1880s by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee to its adaptation by AR Rehman in 1997 - have changed but the spirit has remained the same. Its essence has been the reinvigorating rendition of nationhood," Dasgupta added.
The 45-minute programme turned lively each time the students of PMS sang in divine unison - be it the Vande Mataram of Lata Mageshkar or AR Rehman. Upcoming composer Alok Kumar Mishra who has been trained under Ustad Shekhawat Hussain Khan of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana conducted the music and stage.
The young team of Garima, Anukriti, Sakshi, Divya, Nidhi, Abhishek, Dhananjay, Manoj, Hunar and Pulkit infused melody in the spirit of Vande Mataram and in many ways became young icons of celebrations of history.

The conspicuous absence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi at an AICC function to celebrate 100 years of the party's adoption of Vande Mataram as a national song on Thursday left senior party leaders here red faced and fumbling for an explanation.Â
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also did not attend the function organised by the All India Congress Seva Dal to mark the occasion.
In their absence, other AICC office-bearers dutifully went through the ritual of singing the national song after party treasurer Moti Lal Vora hoisted the national flag at the Seva Dal office at 26 Akbar Road, next to the AICC headquarters.
Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh, whose flip flop on the issue following opposition to singing the song by a handful of self-proclaimed Muslim leaders triggered off the unsavoury controversy, was the only senior member of the Government to grace the occasion.
The absence of Sonia and Manmohan Singh at the party function is bound to send wrong signals about the party's attitude toward the national song, which was sung throughout the nation on Thursday, conceded a Congress leader, on condition of anonymity.
<b>He pointed out that Sonia and Singh were not to be seen at any of the numerous official and non-official functions organised to celebrate the national song either.</b>
"The deliberate or inadvertent abstention of the top brass of the party and the Government from the celebrations will give the BJP a powerful weapon to claim that this was done with an eye on the minority vote bank," the Congress leader feared.
A sizable section of Congress leaders feels that the issue had been mishandled by the party and the Government ever since Arjun Singh publicly diluted a Central Government directive that the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram should be sung throughout the country by saying that it was not compulsory to sing the song.
Even after Singh had let the cat out of the bag, the party spokesman had all along claimed that it was the Congress that had adopted it as the national song at the Varanasi session of the party on September 7, 1905.
AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi suggested that, "Perhaps she was not invited".
All India Congress Seva Dal chief Prahlah Yadav later tried to control the damage by pointing out that Sonia could not attend the function due to security reasons.
The police had set up its camps in the Seva Dal headquarters at 26 Akbar Road and there was not enough space in the premises, he claimed.
He also pointed out that <b>AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes, who normally sends a note inviting the Congress president for such functions was not present in Delhi</b>.
"This should not be taken to mean that Soniaji deliberately avoided associating herself with Vande Mataram celebrations. She regularly attends AICC functions on Independence Day and the Republic Day when Vande Mataram is sung," he said somewhat lamely.

The news that Sonia Gandhi did not attend the Congress function to commemorate 100 years of adoption of Vande Mataram as a national song was received with a sense of disbelief at the BJP national executive which began here on Thursday.Â
<b>"It was a conscious decision on the part of the Congress president to avoid the party function to mark the centenary celebration of the national song. It was not a casual decision. This is how she respects Vande Mataram, the song that many martyrs sang while embracing the gallows for the nation's freedom," </b>accused BJP president Rajnath Singh.
"It is unfortunate that the UPA Government was indulging in vote bank politics at the cost of the spirit of nationalism that the national song represents. The great song is being sacrificed at the altar of vote bank politics," Singh thundered at his inaugural address to the national executive meet.
"It is high time that Vande Mataram is brought under the ambit of Article 51A of the Constitution along with the national flag and the national anthem. The Government should amend the Constitution, and the BJP would support any such move," he added.
"The attitude of Sonia Gandhi vis-Ã -vis Vande Mataram is suggestive of the fact that she does not represent the legacy of the original Congress. She does not think it appropriate to celebrate the centenary of the national song. It is a serious matter," party national spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
"Since Sonia Gandhi did not turn up, all Congress leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh kept waiting for her, and finally did not sing the song," Prasad added.
The BJP has decided to constitute a five-member committee to work out the details to take up the issue of Vande Mataram with the masses across the country. The members of the committee are M Venkaiah Naidu, Ananth Kumar, Arun Jaitley, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, and Sanjay Joshi. A nationwide agitation would be launched.
<b>"We condemn such moves of the UPA Government that demean the symbols of national pride and prestige," </b>Singh said, adding that the BJP would not let the Congress succeed in denigrating Vande Mataram and the contribution of freedom fighters.
"The glorious cultural and civilisational past of the country is being assaulted and humiliated through the textbooks of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The nation is witnessing the worst form of minority appeasement only to run the Government at the Centre," he said.
<b>"BJP has to be mentally and organisationally prepared to meet the future challenges. There are several cracks in the UPA. Internal contradictions are deepening. Left parties have already said that they would withdraw the support if they have a better alternative,"</b> Singh said.
He alerted the cadre to be prepared for mid-term elections, as the UPA was dithering on all vital fronts.
"There are many power centres in the UPA. Along with the allies, even the ministers are behaving like autocrats. There is no promptness in governance. Development projects have no pace. Terrorism is spreading its tentacles everywhere," Singh said.
"The BJP is in favour of more stringent laws to address the problem of terrorism. If the Government has any reservation with POTA, they should think of other nomenclature, but the problem has to be dealt with iron hands. The present Government has turned blind eyes to the anti-India activities taking place in neighbouring countries," Singh said.

Ahmedabad, August 30: Netas may be singing a political tune as far as the National Song is concerned, but as far as schools are concerned the must-sing-Vande-Mataram-on-September-7 controversy is one they could do without.
At Gayatri Vidyalaya in Shah-e-Alam, reciting the national song is commonplace for Muslim as well as Hindu students. <span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>Ninety-nine per cent of the students at this school â run by a Hindu management â are Muslims. </span>
School authorities feel the issue has been blown out of proportion by political parties to get mileage and that reciting the national song on its 100th anniversary is not the only parameter by which patriotism can be judged.
"We are not Hindus and Muslims. As soon as the student enters the school, there is only a teacher-student relationship,'' says Rajnikant Bhatt, managing trustee of Gayatri Vidyalaya. The school is run by Gayatri Vidhottejak Trust. ''Parents of Muslim students have never objected to anything in spite of the fact that we have 99 per cent Muslim students.
