Race relations in Windsor are under increasing strain following three nights of violence sparked by plans to build a mosque in a predominantly white suburb.
Fighting between white and Asian youths culminated in a petrol bomb attack on Wednesday night on a dairy owned by the Muslim businessman whose plans for an Islamic centre have proved bitterly divisive in the Berkshire town.
The violence flared after Ramadan prayers on Monday, when a clash erupted between white and Asian youths wielding pitchforks, baseball bats and iron bars.
The next night, dozens of police were sent to Vale Road in Dedworth, a suburb a short distance from Windsor Castle, as a stand-off had developed involving around 50 youths outside a building used for Muslim prayer. A police helicopter flew overhead and officers searched youths for offensive weapons.
Yesterday, a large, black scorch mark was visible on the front of the Medina Dairy following the petrol bomb attack and repairs were being carried out on a fleet of articulated lorries vandalised in the trouble.
Disorder has flared after years of animosity between some residents and Sardar Hussain, whom they accuse of trying to turn a corner of the mainly white area into a Muslim ghetto.
Mr Hussain, a father of seven, owns Technor House, a former office opposite the dairy, which has been used without planning permission for prayers, mainly for staff and family. He has applied to the royal borough of Windsor to convert it into an Islamic centre for up to 80 worshippers.
The most vehement opposition comes from Vale Road residents, who complain of being kept awake by lorries at the dairy. Traffic congestion, apparently caused by the prayer centre, would be the thin end of the wedge if the plans are approved, they claim.

This conversation began in the sparsely furnished but cavernous office of Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar, in medieval, or Islamic, Cairo. It continued with other sheikhs of the world's oldest university and the highest seat of Sunni theology over cups of scalding oversweet coffee. In between, there was a detour by way of evenings spent with young, educated Arabs in Jeddah, the gateway to Mecca, symbol of global Islam. Â
The common thread that ran through this conversation was Islam's response to jihadi terrorism. Is causing death and destruction in the name of Islam justified? Does Islam prescribe punishment for terrorists? Should Muslims protest if a terrorist is made to feel the pain he/she inflicts on others?
I met Sheikh Tantawi three months after the December 13, 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament House. A parliamentary delegation had by then visited Cairo to sensitise the Egyptian Government about the facts of the case, especially Pakistan's role in the attack, and present dossiers that I had helped prepare. The Egyptians didn't need much convincing: Their embassy in Islamabad had been blown up by jihadis on November 19, 1995.
The Grand Sheikh, in a grey gelabeya and a white wraparound turban, was surprisingly well informed about the attack on Parliament House and when I popped the question - what does he have to say about the attack? - sputtered in rage. "<b>Terrorism is aggression against innocent men, women and children," he said, waving his hands to indicate rejection of any contrary suggestion.</b>
<b>"In the name of Islamic law I reject and condemn the aggression against innocent people, regardless of whatever side, sect or country the aggression comes from," he added, spacing out the words so that my interpreter would not miss out on any. Islam, he said, "shows no mercy to such aggressors (as those who attacked Parliament House)".</b>
Later, over many cups of Turkish coffee, an Al Azhar sheikh who is acknowledged as a scholar of sharia'h explained to me what the Grand Sheikh meant by "no mercy". It is often claimed, he said, that apostasy and murder - apart from adultery - are the only crimes that invite the death penalty under Islamic law. "But capital punishment is not meant to apply only to change or renunciation of faith," he said, adding, "it is also meant to punish acts such as treason, joining forces with the enemy, and sedition".
Another sheikh, who is often denounced by Islamists for not endorsing the "martyrdom" of Palestinian suicide bombers, stressed the need to mete out harsh punishment to terrorists. "At the end of it all, yes, eternal punishment for the crimes we commit in this world are in Allah's hands," he said, and then asserted, "but we should not forget that there is a place for punishment in this world as well."
He should know. Islamic Egypt had no compunctions about sending Sayyid Qutb, the chief ideologue of Islamism, to the gallows on August 29, 1966 for "plotting to overthrow the state". Earlier, Hassan al Banna, founder of Muslim Brotherhood, the mother of all jihadi organisations, was shot dead by the mukhabarat in February, 1949, for encouraging armed insurrection.
What emerged from these and other conversations with scholars in Al Azhar whose knowledge of Islamic theology is impeccable and whose faith in Islam is unquestionable is in sharp contrast to what is being claimed by Islamists - and their fellow travellers - championing the cause of Mohammed Afzal Guru.
<b>Harsh punishment, all of them said, serves as "a deterrent for those who harm innocent people or threaten to destabilise the foundation of society". Two crimes in particular, they insisted, should fetch the death penalty: Intentional murder and fasaad fi al-ardh ("spreading mischief in the land"). It was also pointed out to me that unlike Christianity, Islam prescribes capital punishment for "those who threaten to undermine authority or destabilise the state".</b>
<b>Scholars of Islam have variously interpreted fasaad fi al-ardh and over a period of time, "spreading mischief in the land" has come to mean a variety of crimes or deviant behaviour that "affect the community as a whole, and destabilise society". Some of the crimes that come under the rubric of fasaad fi al-ardh are treason; apostasy; terrorism; land, sea or air piracy; rape; adultery; and, homosexuality</b>.
Ahmed and his friends, whom I met through a common friend in Jeddah, are more informed about the world of high finance than Islamic theology. But they are devout Muslims who chose to return to Saudi Arabia than stay on in the US after their graduate studies in some of the top business schools.
And their views on terrorism run contrary to popular notions of Saudi Arabia as a seething mass of Osama bin Laden clones. "We have been taught, and we believe, that Islam forbids inciting terror in the hearts of defenceless people, the destruction of buildings and properties, the bombing and maiming of innocent men, women, and children," Ahmed said, adding, "Islam does not subscribe to the view that a political cause can be advanced or assisted by such immoral acts."
Perhaps they were echoing the views of Sheikh Abd al-Aziz bin Abdallah Aal al-Sheikh, the grand mufti of Saudi Arabia, head of the Saudi commission of senior Islamic scholars and the supreme Islamic authority in the kingdom that lives by the unflinchingly strict code of Wahabi Islam. Asked for his views on Islamist terrorism, including hijacking of aircraft, attacks against security personnel and suicide operations - like the one on Parliament House - he described them as "illegitimate" and "having nothing to do with jihad in the cause of Allah."
After the public execution of three terrorists, who had been found guilty of bombings, killing security personnel and using a car seized from an expatriate Indian, on an April Friday, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Maiman, a well-known Saudi religious scholar, added another definition to fasaad fi al-ardh: Such crimes, he said, "are called acts of corruption in Islam, and the Quran has warned people against indulging in them".
As for the beheading of three terrorists on a Friday in a public square of Sakaka after the jumma prayer, the sheikh explained it as 'just punishment' for their crimes against innocent people, security personnel and the state: "In Islam, those who are found committing such acts of corruption as killing, stealing and kidnapping are punished severely and therefore are executed or crucified."
<b>The 'Friends of Afzal Society' should be grateful that in secular India, the courts have not decreed that he be decapitated or crucified on Vijay Chowk in full public view of those, including good Muslims, who believe terrorists like him are a threat to open society and democracy.</b>

KABUL, Oct 07 (Kashar News) The Pashtun heartland, Pakistan and Afghanistan - With the snows approaching, the <b>Taliban's spring offensive has fallen short of its primary objective of reviving the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan</b>, as the country was known under Taliban rule from 1996-2001.
Both foreign forces and the Taliban will bunker down until next spring, although the Taliban are expected to continue with suicide missions and some hit-and-run guerrilla activities. The Taliban will take refuge in the mountains that cross the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, where they will have plenty of time to <b>plan the next stage of their struggle: a countrywide "Islamic Intifada of Afghanistan" calling on all former mujahideen to join the movement to boot out foreign forces from Afghanistan. </b>
The intifada will be both national and international. On the one hand it aims to organize a national uprising, and on the other it will attempt to make Afghanistan the hub of the worldwide Islamic resistance movement, as it was previously under the Taliban when Osama bin Laden and his training camps were guests of the country.
<b>The ideologue of the intifada is bin Laden's deputy, Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri, who has assembled a special team to implement the idea. Key to this mission is Mullah Mehmood Allah Haq Yar. </b>
Oriented primarily towards Arabs, especially Zawahiri, Haq Yar speaks English, Arabic, Urdu and Pashtu with great fluency. <b>He was sent by Taliban leader Mullah Omar to northern Iraq to train with Ansarul Islam fighters before the US-led invasion of Afghanistan</b>. He returned to Afghanistan in 2004 and was inducted into a special council of commanders formed by Mullah Omar and assigned the task of shepherding all foreign fighters and high-value targets from Pakistani territory into Afghanistan.
He is an expert in urban guerrilla warfare, a skill he has shared with the Taliban in Afghanistan. His new task might be more challenging: to gather local warlords from north to south under one umbrella and secure international support from regional players.
<b>A major first step toward creating an intifada in Afghanistan was the establishment of the Islamic State of North Waziristan in the Pakistani tribal area this year.</b> This brought all fragmented sections of the Taliban under one command, and was the launching pad for the Taliban's spring offensive.
Subsequently, there has been agreement between a number of top warlords in northern Afghanistan and the Taliban to make the intifada a success next year. Credit for this development goes mainly to Haq Yar.
Haq Yar was recently almost cornered in Helmand province in Afghanistan by British forces. Before that, he spoke to Asia Times Online at an undisclosed location in the Pashtun heartland straddling Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Asia Times Online: When are the Taliban expected to announce the revival of the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan?
Haq Yar: Well, the whole Islamic world is waiting for the revival of the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan, but it will take some time. But sure, it will ultimately happen, and this is what the Taliban's struggle is all about.
ATol: Can you define the level of Taliban-led resistance in Afghanistan?
Haq Yar: It has already passed the initial phases and now has entered into a tactical and decisive phase. It can be measured from the hue and cry raised by the US and its allies. Daily attacks on NATO [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] forces are now routine and suicide attacks are rampant.
ATol: To date, the Taliban have been very active in southwestern Afghanistan, but traditionally success comes when a resistance reaches eastern areas, especially the strategically important Jalalabad. When will this happen?
Haq Yar: Well, I do not agree that the Taliban movement is restricted to southwest Afghanistan. We have now established a network under which we are allied with many big and small mujahideen organizations, and in that way we are fighting foreign forces throughout Afghanistan. In a recent development, the deputy chief of the Taliban movement, Maulana Jalaluddin Haqqani, is now positioned in the eastern zone, including Jalalabad, from where he is guiding attacks on coalition forces. This eastern zone is also part of the Taliban's stronghold.
ATol: What is the role of bin Laden and Zawahiri?
Haq Yar: We are allies and part and parcel of every strategy. Wherever mujahideen are resisting the forces of evil, Arab mujahideen, al-Qaeda and leaders Osama bin Laden and Dr Zawahiri have a key role. In Afghanistan they also have a significant role to support the Taliban movement.
ATol: Is the present Taliban-led resistance against the US and its allies a local resistance or is it international? That is, are resistance movements in other parts of the world led from Afghanistan?
Haq Yar: Initially it was a local movement, but now it is linked with resistance movements in Iraq and other places. We are certainly in coordination with all resistance movements of the Muslim world.
ATol: What is the Taliban strategy with groups like Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and the Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (Khalis)?
Haq Yar: The Hezb-i-Islami of Hekmatyar and the Taliban are fighting under a coordinated strategy and support each other. The leadership of the Khalis group is now in the hands of his son, who is coordinating everything with Maulana Jalaluddin Haqqani.
ATol: What is the Taliban's weaponry? Is it old Russian arms or they have acquired new ones - and if so, where are they getting them?
Haq Yar: The Taliban have all the latest weaponry required for a guerrilla warfare. Where does it come from? Well, Afghanistan is known as a place where weapons are stockpiled. And forces that provided arms a few decades ago - the same weapons are now being used against them.
ATol: The Taliban contacted commanders in northern Afghanistan. What was the result?
Haq Yar: About one and a half years ago these contacts were initiated. Various groups from the north contacted us. We discussed the matter with [Taliban leader] Mullah Mohammed Omar Akhund and then, with his consent, I was assigned to negotiate matters with the Northern Alliance.
The first meeting was held in northern Afghanistan, where I represented the Taliban. Many individuals from various groups of the Northern Alliance attended the meeting and they all condemned the foreign presence in the country, but insisted that the Taliban should take the lead, and then they would follow suit. Another meeting was held after that in which various individuals come up with some conditions, and there was no conclusion. There was no collective meeting, but there are contacts.
ATol: What is the role of the tribal chiefs?
Haq Yar: The tribal chiefs have always been supportive of the Taliban and still are. How could they not be? The US bombed and killed thousand of their people and the puppet [President Hamid] Karzai government is silent. All Afghans are sick and tired of US tyrannies and daily bombardment, whether they are commoners or chiefs, and that is why they are all with the Taliban.
Actually, we have also worked on organizing that support. On the instructions of Mullah Mohammed Omar Akhund, I met with tribal chiefs last year and prepared the grounds for this year's battle [spring offensive], and all tribal chiefs assured me of their support. And now there is support - it is there for everybody to see.
ATol: It is said that the Taliban are now fueled by drug money. Is this correct, and if not, how do they manage their financial matters?
Haq Yar: It is shameful to say that the Taliban, who eliminated poppies from Afghanistan, are dependent on the drug trade to make money. This is wrong. As far as money is concerned, we do not need much. Whatever is required, we manage it through our own limited resources.
ATol: Are you satisfied with the media's role?
Haq Yar: Not at all. They do not publish our point of view. They never tried to talk to the genuine Taliban. Rather, they go after not genuine people who are basically plants and rejected by the Taliban leadership.Â

MUSLIM yobs who wrecked a house to stop four brave soldiers moving in after returning from Afghanistan sparked outrage last night.
The house in a village near riot-torn Windsor had BRICKS thrown through windows and was DAUBED with messages of hate.
Four young Household Cavalry officers who had planned to rent it were also the target of phone THREATS.
They were yesterday forced to look elsewhere to live â after top brass warned them against inflaming racial violence near the Queenâs Windsor Castle home.
Last night furious Shadow immigration minister Damian Green said: âThis is a shocking development.â
Hounded out ... house's smashed windows
Colleagues of the officers branded the vandalism a âdisgraceâ. A source at the regiment said: âThese guys have done nothing but bravely serve their country â yet they canât even live where they want in their own country.â The £3,000-a-month detached home in picturesque Datchet, Berks, is less than a mile from Windsor Castle. It was attacked as extra police were drafted into Windsor â where battles have raged for days between Asian and white gangs.
On Wednesday a Muslim-run dairy was firebombed.
The young officers â from the same regiment as Prince Harry â had planned to use the four-bed house for rest and recuperation after months risking their lives on the frontline.
Louts struck two days after the four arrived in uniform in an Army Land Rover to view it.
The source said: âA gang of local Muslims set about keeping them away. They hurled bricks through the windows and then wrote offensive graffiti across the front of the house.â The vile messages included one in 4ft letters on the drive â warning: âF*** offâ.
Sources inside Windsorâs Combermere Barracks â where the officers are based âconfirmed Muslims had made calls threatening the men.
The scandal comes as Tony Blair today pledges the Army in Afghanistan can have ANYTHING it needs to hammer the Taliban. Writing exclusively in The Sun he declares that Our Boys are âthe best in the worldâ.
A Household Cavalry insider said of the Muslimsâ insult to Britainâs heroes: âEveryone in the regiment is really upset. Itâs one thing coming under attack in Helmand in Afghanistan but quite another getting this abuse in England. The officers were determined to face down the yobs and still move in â but didnât want a race riot on their hands.â
Police hunting the vandals confirmed: âOne line of inquiry is that it is racially aggravated.â

This coupled with the other survey from some university talking about huge popularity of astrology amongst the youth in the US are very good indicators. Field of astrology needs to be taken seriously and marketed properly. Some organization like FICCI should be setup that professionally markets astrology in a proper manner.

NAIVASHA: A couple caught having sex in a Kenyan mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan have been sentenced to 18 months jail for what the judge called an "abominable" affront to religion.
Peter Kimani and Jennifer Wairimu pleaded guilty to the charge of having sex in a place of worship after being caught on Oct. 3 at the Abubakar mosque in Gilgil, about 100 km north of Nairobi. Neither is a Muslim.
A worshipper heading for evening prayers found the couple having sex after investigating what the prosecution described as strange noises emanating from a dark corner of the mosque.
Kimani and Wairimu both pleaded for clemency at Monday's hearing, saying they were too drunk to know where they were. Kimani told the court he thought he was in a lodging house.
A senior magistrate in nearby Naivasha, dismissed their plea.
"Having sex in a mosque is a most abominable thing to religion and only a custodial sentence can add justice to this," the magistrate said.

MUSLIM yobs who wrecked a house to stop four brave soldiers moving in after returning from Afghanistan sparked outrage last night.
The house in a village near riot-torn Windsor had BRICKS thrown through windows and was DAUBED with messages of hate.
Four young Household Cavalry officers who had planned to rent it were also the target of phone THREATS.
They were yesterday forced to look elsewhere to live â after top brass warned them against inflaming racial violence near the Queenâs Windsor Castle home.
Last night furious Shadow immigration minister Damian Green said: âThis is a shocking development.â

Colleagues of the officers branded the vandalism a âdisgraceâ. A source at the regiment said: âThese guys have done nothing but bravely serve their country â yet they canât even live where they want in their own country.â The £3,000-a-month detached home in picturesque Datchet, Berks, is less than a mile from Windsor Castle. It was attacked as extra police were drafted into Windsor â where battles have raged for days between Asian and white gangs.
On Wednesday a Muslim-run dairy was firebombed.
The young officers â from the same regiment as Prince Harry â had planned to use the four-bed house for rest and recuperation after months risking their lives on the frontline.
Louts struck two days after the four arrived in uniform in an Army Land Rover to view it.
The source said: âA gang of local Muslims set about keeping them away. They hurled bricks through the windows and then wrote offensive graffiti across the front of the house.â The vile messages included one in 4ft letters on the drive â warning: âF*** offâ.
Sources inside Windsorâs Combermere Barracks â where the officers are based âconfirmed Muslims had made calls threatening the men.
The scandal comes as Tony Blair today pledges the Army in Afghanistan can have ANYTHING it needs to hammer the Taliban. Writing exclusively in The Sun he declares that Our Boys are âthe best in the worldâ.
A Household Cavalry insider said of the Muslimsâ insult to Britainâs heroes: âEveryone in the regiment is really upset. Itâs one thing coming under attack in Helmand in Afghanistan but quite another getting this abuse in England. The officers were determined to face down the yobs and still move in â but didnât want a race riot on their hands.â
Police hunting the vandals confirmed: âOne line of inquiry is that it is racially aggravated.â
The houseâs owner Johanna Ledwidge refused to comment beyond saying she was very upset. A shocked neighbour in the quiet street said: âWe pride ourselves in this neighbourhood that we welcome all cultures.â

âIf thereâs anybody who should f*** off itâs the Muslims who are doing this kind of thing. Police should pull out the stops to track down these vile thugs.â
Sir Andrew Green, director of the think-tank Migrationwatch UK, said: âIncidents like this are absolutely inexcusable and seriously undermine efforts by all sides to achieve integration. Those who choose to live in this country owe a loyalty to Britain.â

MANILA: Authorities today dismantled a second bomb in the insurgency-wrecked southern Philippines, <b>a day after suspected al-Qa'ida-linked militants detonated an explosive, killing six people.</b>
The explosion, late yesterday, destroyed a stall selling alcohol during a festival in the town of Makilala, 950km southeast of Manila, North Cotabato provincial police chief Federico Dulay said.
Six people were killed and at least 29 were wounded.
Authorities early today recovered and dismantled another homemade bomb in the same town, said Col Ruperto Pabustan, the army brigade commander.

BANGKOK, Thailand -- In a bloody, stunning display of discipline, <b>suspected Muslim insurgents exploded 22 time-bombs in 22 banks on Thursday (August 31)</b> killing one person, a week after an apparently unrelated car bomb "assassination plot" against Thailand's prime minister.
Most of bank bombs were placed on tellers' counters amid throngs of customers and staff, while other bombs were inside banks' ATM machines, police said.
The 22 hand-made bombs exploded like clockwork within the space of five minutes, between 11:30 a.m. and 11:35 a.m., scattered across <b>Muslim-majority Yala province in southern Thailand.</b>
"Mostly, the militants used young men dressed in student uniforms to plant small bombs which were hidden inside books," regional army commander, Lieutenant General Ongkorn Thongprasom, told Thai TV.
Bombers also hid explosives in women's handbags, garbage baskets, on plastic seats, and other places near customers who were writing bank slips to make deposits and withdrawals, police said.
<b>Buddhist-majority Thailand's security forces -- heavily trained and armed by the United States -- have clumsily fought a losing, escalating war in southern Thailand, which is the world's worst Islamist insurgency outside Iraq.
