Prominent Muslim leader and senior member of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board Zafaryab Jilani on Saturday defended Uttar Pradesh Minority Welfare Minister Haji Yakoob Qureshi declaring a bounty of Rs 51 crore for anybody who beheads the Danish cartoonists who caricatured Prophet Mohammad.

Mr Jilani said Haji Qureshi had not done anything objectionable by announcing a reward for killing the cartoonists.

"After all, Qureshi's announcement highlights how offended the Muslims feel by this heinous act of the cartoonists. Moreover, Qureshi's offer stands for anyone from the Muslim world and not India alone and the statement is within Islamic laws", he said.

Both Sunni and Shia Muslim organisations have planned a mammoth protest march here on Sunday against the cartoons and India's stand on Iran's nuclear programme at the IAEA.

However, Haji Qureshi's announcement in Meerut, calling for the death of the Danish cartoonists, on Friday has led to strong reactions from political parties while the State Government has refused to comment on the issue.

The BJP has demanded action against Haji Qureshi with State unit president Kesharinath Tripathi pointing out that Islamic law is not above the Indian Penal Code. Mr Tripathi said the Minister has committed a criminal offence and is liable for punishment. He demanded that the Government take cognisance of the matter and register a case against Haji Qureshi.

Congress spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh wondered whether the decision to announce the reward on the cartoonists' heads was taken in a State Cabinet meeting since the Government has maintained silence over the issue. "The Chief Minister should come clean on the issue. His silence is shocking and surprising", Mr Singh said.

The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, however, has officially distanced itself from Haji Qureshi's announcement. AIMPLB spokesman SQR Iliyasi said Haji Qureshi's statement was an attempt to incite passion and cannot be justified. "Though the publication of the cartoons of Prophet Mohammad is highly deplorable and condemnable, this kind of statement could inflame passion," he told PTI over phone.

Forty per cent of the British Muslims surveyed said they backed introducing sharia in parts of Britain, while 41 per cent opposed it. Twenty per cent felt sympathy with the July 7 bombers' motives, and 75 per cent did not. One per cent felt the attacks were "right".

Shariat Court gives death to Danish cartoonistQUOTE

A Shariat Court has issued a religious decree sentencing the Danish cartoonist, who caricatured Prophet Mohammad, to death.

This was after a Uttar Pradesh Minister announced a cash reward of Rs 51 crore to the person beheading the cartoonist.

The decree was issued on behalf of the Idar-e-Sharia Darul Kaza and Ifta Firangimahal Taksal (Islamic courts) by their Qazi on Sunday.

The Qazi said it has been clearly stated in the Quran that whosoever hurts the Prophet, deserved to be sternly punished.

Asked whether the fatwa had any significance in India, where the Islamic law does not apply, he said, "it is applicable wherever Muslims live".

The so-called Moderate Muslim Leaders in the UK have started âcriticisingâ the Islamic Fundamental type of Protest and are requesting Muslims to join in Peaceful Protest.

However, this is only a âput onâ as in Private the same Leaders have been known to preach âViolent Protestâ in creating an Islamic Britain.

One does see Flyers Posted on Walls advocating an Islamic Britain and await the day when the Islamic Flag flies on Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament and No. 10 Downing Street etc.

An unmistakable aspect of the controversy over the Danish cartoons caricaturing Prophet Mohammad is that the Christian West has been quick to give it a strong political and economic dimension, while the worldwide Islamic community perceives the matter as a religious insult motivated by political deceit. This, I believe, is the crux of the matter.

The freedom of expression invoked by the all-pervasive Western media is bogus. The cartoons were a deliberate attempt to inflame the volatile and defensive Muslim community across the globe, to justify a crackdown against it on the European continent, which the Western Christian community regards as its heartland, because the early communities of the Gulf-born faith grew in Rome and had their earliest victories there.

Today, the Islamic and Western civilisations are locked in a deadly embrace; hating and fearing each other, they are seeking political power over the same landmasses, viz., the Gulf, Europe, and by extension, the Christian continents of America and Australia. Regardless of the strength and status of Muslim and Christian communities outside this terrain, this is the critical battlefield, which is why I maintain that Hindu India and Indian Muslims should stay aloof from this seething cauldron. Allow me to explain.

Islam is the dominant religion and culture in the Gulf, which is also its natal basin, but most regimes are politically subordinate to America. Those opposing Western domination are fighting for survival. Yet in Europe, Islam is a seamless demographic and cultural invasion. This is partly true of Australia, though in America the faith currently keeps a low social profile.

Islam is united, coherent, and numerically significant; Europe's fond belief that poor Muslim immigrants would perennially serve as cheap labour has shattered; Islam is a political challenge and Europe is culturally and economically vulnerable. Islamic ascendancy in Europe would instantly negate Washington's geo-strategic plans and world hegemony.

Worse, Europe is on the defensive; its duplicitous manoeuvres have played themselves out. In the aftermath of the Second World War, it set up the Vatican as an independent Christian nation and admitted it into the United Nations; it is an open secret that the Vatican served as a major funnelling agency for Western-American interventions in the Soviet bloc during the Cold War.

But this awesome political face of Christianity was camouflaged behind a new god called Secularism, which deemed religion illegitimate in public life. Accordingly, the West devoted five decades to brainwash the world regarding the irrationality of faith, a claim rejected by Islam, while the Marshall Plan-induced prosperity pushed its own people into a hedonist spiral in which collective good was subordinated to individual whim.

Throughout Western civilisation's cultural crisis, its core institutions and economic and political elites in Europe and America remained Christian. The common commitment to Christianity, capitalism and the (carefully controlled) free market is why Europe accepted American supremacy over the Western world, and likewise made charity and evangelisation instruments of foreign policy.

But the West was unable to convey this duplicity to its own people, who are de-motivated in the inevitable conflict with Islam for cultural and religious supremacy in Europe. What is at stake, therefore, is territory, the geo-political landscape of the white Christian people. And the threat is not confined to Europe; it is a matter of time before it surfaces in the US, because neither Islam nor Christianity believes in peaceful coexistence.

Islam and Christianity realise that land and people are held together, not so much by ethnicity, as by affiliation to a common religion and way of life. Christianity spread because the early apostles turned their gaze away from the ethnicity-bound Jews, and Islam quickly outgrew its Arab origins. Both religions retain an abiding commitment to conquest by conversion, and do not hesitate to operate on each other's turf. 

While most of Christianity's modern successes have been in Buddhist and other non-Muslim lands, Islam has made major inroads in white societies by conversion, immigration, and steeper birth rates. Europe's Muslim population is no longer quiescent, and the host societies are feeling the strain. Europe wants to stop the influx of more Muslims, and somehow expel those already inside. In short, it needs an excuse to light a ready torch.

Islam understands the importance of political power for controlling and guiding the community of believers. The Prophet exercised political dominion over the faithful, and three of the four Pious Caliphs who succeeded him were assassinated due to disputes relating to power and succession. Since then, there has always been a strain between the sovereign and the imam in both Shia and Sunni Islam, but today, I believe, there is a broad understanding between Sunni Islam under the Saudi king, Shia Islam led by Iran, and the orthodox clergy of both sects.

This is because they are struggling both for genuine political autonomy of the Islamic nations in the Gulf region where Islam was born, and to retain a foothold in Europe to counter the pressure from Western civilisation.

The West needs political and economic domination of the oil-rich Gulf to maintain its world hegemony and standards of living. But decades of easy living have softened its people and placed the entire burden of defending Western Christianity on the shoulders of the United States, which also fears physical engagements. That Europe has no stomach for battle can be seen from Denmark's hysterical reaction to the boycott of Danish goods in the Arab world, in protest against the cartoons.

The European Union and the United States also condemned the boycott, which has cost the Danes millions of dollars. Surely it is ridiculous to expect Islam to pay for the Christian world's desire to blaspheme the Prophet? Yet the West denounces the violent protests against Danish embassies in some countries and equally reviles the boycott of foreign goods!

Interestingly, in India, some secular (read anti-Hindu) Muslim intellectuals have also criticised the entirely peaceful and democratic method of protest through boycott, and this raises suspicions that a section of the community may be willing to play into Western hands in a conflict that is certain to be bloody and prolonged. I am concerned because, until last Friday, all protests by Indian Muslims in cities like Srinagar and Bhopal were non-violent. In Delhi, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid used the occasion to condemn MF Hussain's vulgar painting of Bharat Mata and thereby showed sensitivity to Hindu sentiments.

Now, other forces seem to have got into the act. In Congress-ruled Andhra Pradesh, the Friday prayers suddenly turned violent in Hyderabad city, with protesters hell-bent upon damaging shops in a manner that could create communal ill-will. Simultaneously, an Uttar Pradesh minister placed a Rs 51 crore bounty on the heads of the foreign cartoonists, which Muslim clergy in the city were quick to condemn.

This set Hindu secularists against orthodox Islam for the first time in recent memory, which lends credence to my suspicion that Secularism is intrinsically pro-Christian. Ms Sonia Gandhi has refused to speak her mind on the cartoons, but is pushing a divisive minority-pampering policy through the UPA. She has said Indian Muslims are Congress' "natural allies;" are Hindus enemies? It will be interesting to see if Indian Muslims agree, at the behest of a European Christian, to tease Hindus and force India to join the battle for Europe against Islam.

The article of Ms. Jain is a good analysis except that I beg to differ with her concluding paragraph. The fact remains that a very small section of our Muslim citizens have gone to the street to hold demonstration, what to say of indulging in violence. However, a few of their political leaders belonging to both the majority and the minority community have so far unsuccessfully tried to built up tension on the issue of the cartoons.
We as Indian's should feel proud of the fact that the legal experts who drafted the Constitution of the Republic way back in 1949 in Constituent Assembly of India , had the foresight to visualize the problem which Denmark is facing today along with a few other EU members. Therefore, while granting the freedom of Speech and Expression to the citizens under Article 19 it has also empowered the State to impose reasonable restriction , so that the exercise of the rights by an individual or a group of individuals do not cause any problems for other sections of the Indian society. Similarly, Sec-153 of the Indian Penal Code of 1860 provides for punishment to those who are guilty of causing ill feeling and religious hatred by exercising their freedom of speech and expression.
The European Union needs to adjust itself to the reality of a multi-racial and multi-religious society in the face rapid globalization. It is unfortunate that many of the commentators are terming this current series of unfortunate cases of violence in various countries as a confrontation between West and Islam. Very few of them are able to go the fundamental and root cause of the problem, ie how the right of freedom of speech and expression is to be exercised and till what extend this freedom extends, particularly in the present day Western Society.

I agree with you, India's laws are great and best among lot of other countries but enforcement of law in India is worst. Indian laws are political tool to abuse according to vote bank in the name of secularism.

There was no violence by Hindus on Hussain pervert display. When Hindus can sit quiet why not Muslims? Cartoon was not published by Indian paper but nude pictures were made by perverted Indian Muslim inside India.

Nothing is perfect in this world,we all are constantly trying to bring in perfection. As far as MF's action is concerned, it is not only the prerogative of the Indian Prime Minister to bring action against the individual. Any Citizen could have brought a legal action on MF but non so far has decided to do so. We should not let everything be left at the doorsteps of the Government of the day.The Citizens need to be proactive, other wise as you have very rightly said the legal provisions and the ground realities will remain in diferent places.

However, this aspect is quite different than the case of cartoons in Denmark and the fall out of that in the different parts of the World. I would welcome your views on how the EU countires have been facing this crisis and what in your assessment will be the right course for them to bring back normalcy.

According to Sandeep Shandilya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, south zone, Al-Marfai had landed in the city two days ago and was staying at a lodge in Talab Katta area. He had allegedly paid Rs.10,000 to Ahmed Bin Salam and Sabira Begum of Nawab Sab Kunta area to marry their daughter.

Inquiries revealed that Ahmed Bin Salam is physically handicapped and has 10 children including nine girls. Five of his daughters are unmarried.

Ravish-ji there is something that doesnt gel in your argument. You have one case where the sensibilities of aam-abduls are being immediately considered by elite-types but the sensibilities of aam-aadmi like me dont matter since i didnt slap a case against MF. I cannot help but link the propensity of aam-abduls to go on rampage after the friday namaaz with the immediate consideration of the 'sensibilitities' of the fatwa-happy abduls.. Besides FWIW the Indian state is HUUGE and doesnt miss a chance to appease the aam-abduls then why cant it do something about this MF ? Perhaps it is waiting for aam-aadmi to go on rampage too so they can happily proclaim -> see this fascist hindutvavadi going on rampage, they are like this onlee..

The reason is very simple, we do not have unity as the other party has in all cases where any question of their community arises. Today, it is true that the Congress is the majority partner in the ruling coalition. However, a few years back the BJP was the major partner of the ruling coaliton in our country. At that time also the situation was exactly the same .

The ones who claim that since Muslim sensibilities are hurt and therefore the cartoons should be printed no more and that Danes should apologise are setting a dangerous precedent, this idea that Europe should somehow change its norms to accomodate every new group under the guise of multi culturalism is no different from the nonsense we hear in India about composite culture, one of the cardinal principles upoen which modern day Europe has been built is absolute freedom of expression and if people do not like something they can protest but cannot take to violence, if tomorrow should all VOI books on Islam be banned because Muslims feel hurt?, books like Ram Swarup's "Understanding Islam Through Hadis: Religious faith or Fanaticism?" have already been banned under the guise of hurt sentiments and Muslim hooliganism, if these harmless cartoons hurt their sentiments then the Quran hurts my sentiments also with its repeated hate mongering against non Muslims and incitement to violence, muder and rapine of non Muslims, so ban the Quran first then we can ban other books also.

We know the outcome, case will drag and he will come out as winner .Anyway he will stay in power. One day future PM of Ismalic India.
