Swine flu death toll in Mexico rises to 103 QUOTEMEXICO CITY, April 26 (Reuters) - The death toll in Mexico from an outbreak of a new type of swine flu has risen to 103 people, Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said on Sunday.

Cordova told Mexican television that around 400 people were in hospital out of a total of around 1,600 suspected cases.

The outbreak of a new strain of flu in Mexico in the last few days has stoked fears of a global epidemic as new cases cropped up in the United States and Canada. Possible infections are also being checked in Europe, Israel and New Zealand.

"The most recent reports we have are of 1,614 cases, with 103 deaths, and we still have around 400 patients in hospital," Cordova told the Televisa network, explaining that around two-thirds of the sick patients had recovered.

PTI | New Delhi
The Government today issued a travel advisory for those travelling to countries affected by swine flu and put in place a screening system for passengers coming from these nations.

All passengers coming from the affected countries -- Mexico, United States, United Kingdom, France, Canada and New Zealand -- would be screened and those who have reached here till 10 days back would be tracked down and asked to report to the nearest medical centre, Director General Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) Dr VN Katoch said at a press conference here.

The Government is also instituting surveillance of ports and international airports along with monitoring through Integrated Disease Surveillance units in the states, he said.

The country already has a stockpile of the effective drug Tamiflu which was used during the bird flu epidemic. "We have also asked for an additional one million Tamiflu to be procured," he said.

"As of now we are concentrating on prevention of the infection spreading from person to person as in India there is no scenario of the diseases spreading from animals till now," Director of the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) Shivlal said.

The states have also been advised to review their preparedness to investigate and contain any suspected cluster of influenza like illness. Guidelines to this effect have been sent to all the state surveillance officers.

Swine Flu
What is Swine Influenza?
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

This story also mentions Spain. I also read somewhere that death toll is upto 143 ?

Please post ways to avoid getting infected. I have heard that avoiding touch and air is the best way to avoid it ? Surgical masks to avoid infection by air and frequent washing of hands to avoid infection by touch is the best way to avoid this. Any other tips please ? I need to travel and so does family (kids included)... <img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' />

One thing strange is the US Admin declaring an emergency like BB did after first case of Surat plague was announced. th ecover story is sucha declaration allows the release of the Tamiflu stockpile(50M doses) of which 25% will be released now.

Question since immunization is based on old dead virus, and if this is new virus who does the old dead virus based Tamiflu help immunize the population?

Is it a palliative or placebo?

Sebelius hearing is due, that was main reason. Right now, there is no Surgeon General, no Health sec. This scare can be used to push for ration health care and late term abortion supporter Sebelius .

It will take another 2-3 days to find out about strain. Actual effect will come during fall, by then it will be mutated couple of times.
