The data collected by experts from Wycliffe/Summer Institute of Linguistics, World Vision (WV) and the International Mission Board/Southern Baptists to compile the Joshua Project Peoples list included a detailed and comprehensive list of the people groups in India as well. Though this may appear normal international research activity - generating ethnographic profiles of non-Christian people groups in the 10/40 window - there are unseen dangers inherent in the compilation of such accurate people-group profiles.

The CIA has publicly admitted to having used Wycliffe/SIL and the Southern Baptists for covert intelligence operations in many parts of the world. The cosy relationship between the Wycliffe and CIA is documented exhaustively in a book Thy Will Be Done written in the 1990s by Gerald Colby and Charlotte Dennett. The book documents joint CIA-Wycliffe missions to source anthropological data from Latin America. Here's a quote from the book: "SIL had helped gather anthropological information on the Tarascan Indians that ended up in Nelson Rockefeller's intelligence files. The files contained cross-references to reveal behavioural patterns among Indian peoples in everything from socialisation (including aggressive tendencies) and personality traits, drives, emotions, and language structure, to political intrigue, kinship ties, traditional authority, mineral resources, exploitation, and labor relations. Rockefeller called these data the Strategic Index of Latin America." The question that will rattle not only the Indian government, but also outrage the Indian citizens is whether the American-funded "spying missions" carried out by Indian and foreign missionary agencies through more than a decade has resulted in the preparation of a 'Strategic Index of India' at the CIA headquarters?

Wycliffe, the Southern Baptists and World Vision have all been active in India as well. Could it be mere coincidence that Southern Baptists who are amongst President Bush's most loyal supporters, played an active role in the "spying out" missions? In fact, Colby and Dennett's book features a missionary of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, William Carlsen, who admits that he gave an eight-hour briefing to the CIA on Thailand's tribal areas. In the mid-1970s when the CIA's penetration of American missionary agencies made international headlines, the agency passed a self-limiting executive order to refrain from using foreign missionaries for intelligence gathering operations. Incidentally, it was George Bush Sr who in his first action as the new CIA director declared on February 11, 1976, that he would ban the practice of enlisting "clergymen and newsmen as intelligence agents." But this was just public grandstanding, doublespeak to save the CIA not only from embarrassment, but protect its operations in Latin American countries such as Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. As soon as this announcement was made the CIA granted itself a private waiver. This was confirmed in April 1996 when the then CIA director, John Deutch, testifying before a Senate intelligence committee, said that the agency could waive the ban in cases "unique and special threats to national security."

Surprisingly, Bush's supporters like the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), made laborious protests then to condemn the collaboration between missionaries and the intelligence agency. "Any foreigner living in a foreign culture already comes under a natural suspicion. If this policy is reversed, it would totally erode the ministry of missionaries," said Jerry Rankin, the then president of the Southern Baptist Convention Foreign Mission Board. In effect, this amounted to a plea to the CIA to keep their most well publicized (and hardly noticed) secret guarded!! The very fact that CIA has been courting religious missionaries in India and elsewhere is testimony to the fact that US funded evangelical missions have an unparalleled reach to the remotest corners of the country. Christianity Today in its issue of April 29, 1996, carried the following comment by the NAE President Don Argue: "For intelligence agencies to seek any relationship whatsoever with our religious workers must be unequivocally prohibited."

American taxpayers' money goes to USAID -> World Vision -> christoterrorism. Whether Hindus in America are sending money to Hindu charities or not, their taxes are certainly going toward conversion.

In the past twelve months I have had three different families come into our office in deep distress. Parents of one young woman were distraught. Their young daughter had been murdered by her in-laws, in much the same way as Parvati, whom I spoke about earlier. Well I told the story and then went over to the police authorities who had, until then, totally neglected the whole case. We went to the girls' in-laws and, as usually happens, they denied everything. We kept at it and the sum total is that there has been a conviction.

Gradually, at least in Chennai city, the incidents of sexual harassment, or "Eve-teasing" -- the word that we often use -- have begun to come down. Since the start of this year there have been 560 cases as against 1,200 for the same period last year. Women and their issues are important to me as a Christian.

But there are also the stories of hope that we can tell, the stories that speak of honesty and goodness, qualities that seem to be vanishing before our very yes. I recently met a 99-year-old bishop. We interviewed him about his life, and, sitting right up, next to him with the camera registering every line on his face, I saw his eyes fill with tears. He was saying how he still felt strong enough to work. "What work would you do, Your Grace?" I prodded him. He answered me, in utmost simplicity. "Anything.anything..anything for God. I feel strong enough to do even manual work." This from an old man who was shuffling around his room and needed help much of the time.

I for one, strongly believe that although I call this my chosen profession, I believe it is also my calling. No matter how dark or gloomy the path may seem at times, it is my duty to light a candle of commitment to the truth of what I report. We, who work for organisations that give us the power to report the story, and to report it truthfully and without bias, must be persistent and dedicated enough to delve, to drive and dig deep into the issues that threaten any of our fellow human beings or any community.

Instead of merely scratching the surface, we need to mine for the truth, so that we can awaken a movement for truth. A movement that will generate the triumph of the spirit. We need no charter. All that we need is a solemn personal affirmation that each in his or her own way will function as unfetteredÂ ambassadors of truth so that, at the end of the day, we will make our contribution to influence a beginning for change. I know it's not easy, but I sincerely want to keep trying. I am ready. Are you ready too? Christian media persons like ourselves have to use the power we have to influence. We have to light a candle. No, let all of us together light a fire!

Maoists and the church: Strange bedfellows in an emerging new Nepal

If pre-election promises made in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal hold true, we can put away those mental images of Maoists as the bad guys inciting violence in that country.

On April 10, Nepal held elections for a new constituent assembly and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) won at least a plurality of the 601 seats. And who was its key ally? The National Council of Churches of Nepal. The NCCN is a new partner church of Global Ministries, the combined witness of the UCC and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Just a dozen years ago, such a partnership would have been unthinkable.

Last year, the Rev. Cally Rogers-Witte, Executive Minister of the UCC's Wider Church Ministries, and the Rev. James Vijayakumar, Global Ministries Southern Asia Executive, spoke to a Napalis audience of 350 local church leaders. They said that God created the whole world, that all persons are God's children, and that the Christian faith calls Christians to work for peace and justice and democracy.

One Maoist leader in a similar church gathering responded that 11 years ago he personally had ordered that a church be burned. At that time, he said, the Maoists were fighting capitalism, feudalism and imperialism â and he saw the church as a visible symbol of western imperialism. So he ordered it burned.

But now, he said, I see that the church is interested in human rights, poverty, human dignity and freedom of speech. These are our fundamental values, too.

Decades of widespread human rights violations and poverty had led to the rise of Maoism. The Maoists took up the cause of farmers and the rural poor and took arms against the national army.

Their 10-year insurgency cost 14,000 lives.

Besides targeting the 239-year-old royal dynasty, the Maoists also took aim at the church, which they saw only as other-worldly and uncaring about the country's social, political and economical issues. Many in the church did hold negative attitudes toward people of other faiths, and refused to cooperate on common issues.

But another group of Christians was beginning to plan for a peaceful future for Nepal. The NCCN had been formed in 1999, but only became fully operational in 2003 when Dr. K.B. Rokaya became General Secretary.

In 2006, under a UN-brokered peace deal, the Maoists surrendered their arms and entered the political realm, effectively ending the civil war. Among other things, they agreed to the election of a constituent assembly to rewrite the constitution and create a parliamentary republic, thereby ending the monarchy.

After the cease fire, the NCCN played a major role in bringing all faith groups into the process of "building a new Nepal."

The Maoists' alliance with the church came about as they learned that the NCCN was concerned about working to alleviate poverty and defending human rights when abuses occur.

Will the peaceful efforts that led to the elections carry through to the rewriting of the constitution and the establishment of a new government?

Vijayakumar thinks they will. "This is a big revolution," he says. "The election is seen as a very positive thing by the church, as part of a growing awareness that the church needs to participate in the life of a new Nepal.

Critics note that although the Maoists say they do not want to go back to war, neither have they renounced armed struggle.

However, the former insurgent leader Prachanda, whose name means "the fierce one" in Napali, has pledged that the Maoists will be faithful to their mandate from the people "to consolidate lasting peace."

Orissa Report

This blog is coming to you from Visakhapatnam, India where I am spending the night after completing a fabulous conference in Semiliguda, Orissa. Tomorrow I will travel to New Delhi and be there for a few days before returning home. P.G. Vargis, the founder of Indian Evangelical Team (IET), asked me not to say anything publicly about the location of the meetings in Orissa until they were completed. Having just completed the conference, I am free to talk about them now.

The Orissa Peace Festival in Semiliguda, India was a huge success, surpassing everyone's expectations. The state of Orissa has been the site of violent persecution of Christians and Semiliguda has seen several Christian workers and missionaries killed in recent months and years, including the much publicized martyrdom of the Australian missionary and his two sons. Yesterday I had breakfast with a group of pastors who were beaten last month for preaching the gospel in Orissa.

Choosing Orissa for the site of a major Christian leadership conference was a daring step of faith, but P.G. and I felt it was time for a breakthrough in Orissa, and as the site of several martyrdoms, Semiliguda was a spiritually significant location to hold the conference. Initially we had planned to accommodate a thousand pastors and leaders for this five day conference, but when several thousand more expressed a desire to attend, the plans were altered to make the conference grounds a kind tent city with the attendees sleeping, eating and living at the site. In the end we accommodated around 3,500 on the grounds and put 500 in nearby hotels.

Although this was a leadership conference and not a meeting open to the public, some of the people from the town of Semiliguda came to the conference grounds on the edge of town at night out of curiosity. On Friday night the police told us there were 7,000 people present and Saturday night we had more than 8,000 people!

Beginning the first day the police set up their own tent on the grounds and stationed 70 policemen at the site. None of the IET leaders regarded this as a good thing. The police in Orissa are usually active participants in the persecution of Christians. But P.G. had an idea from the Lord and invited the police chief to a special ceremony where he was honored with a garland. At the ceremony the police chief said, "People think I am anti-Christian, but I'm not. I was educated in a Christian school." He then gave his officers a strict order to allow the meetings to go on without harassment.

Nevertheless, things remained tense and P.G. and the senior IET leaders kept a wary eye on the crowd and the police. I was never allowed to sit on the platform and was never introduced as a preacher. P.G. would say that he and his wife, Lilly, and his daughter, Grace, were the preachers. They would get up, speak for five minutes, and then P.G. would say he had a friend he wanted to introduce and bring a "greeting." P.G. would introduce me as a friend bringing a greeting, and then as he handed me the microphone, he would whisper, "Preach for an hour and a half." We did this twice a day and every evening. So three times a day I would bring a 90 minute "greeting." I was told the police were wondering, "Who is this greeting man?"

Because several thousand local people were coming at night, the evening meetings took on the tone of an evangelistic event. The last three nights I preached strong evangelistic messages, and then would turn it over to P.G. who would lead the crowd in a sinner's prayer.

Even the name of the conference -- Orissa Peace Festival -- was a deliberate euphemism so as not to evoke hostility. One morning I woke up at 5:00 and the Lord gave me an evangelistic message I called, "Ten Things the Bible Says about Peace." I believe it was very effective. In the daytime sessions I primarily taught on faith.

Today as we made the five hour drive from Semiliguda to Visakhapatnam, P.G. told me he thought these were the most powerful meetings he's ever been in. I can't tell you how happy that made me!

Thank you for praying for me and the conference and a special thank you to the Joseph Company for underwriting this awesome event. Only heaven will reveal all that has been accomplished this week.

As I was checking into the hotel here in Visakhapatnam, the bellman said to me (and I quote), "Sir, you need to rest now. You look wery tired."

I think I'll go for a walk on the beach, and then get something to eat.

They don't want to be held responsible in the future for having destroyed Hindu Dharma the way they have always openly destroyed other civilisations in the past. So they pretend it was 'secular' situation that slowly caused Hinduism to "ebb away". Hindus must say it openly now or else history won't record what the real name of the menace was.
Record for posterity, because that is part of the fight. Look at how CNN's lies on the situation regarding Swami has been spinned. That is what the (christoterrorist) history is intended to look like in future. But we know better.

Note also that the media's continuous use of "minority" community - this is another christian thing, especially when it comes to later debates on who attacked who. I wouldn't put it past christoterrorists to behave again like they did with Ancient Rome: they can one day try to twist it all around and say that Hindus were the violent aggressive "minority" being referred to. (Christos turned many martyrs amongst the Ancient Romans into christian victims of Roman tyranny instead - McCabe says how many in the christo martyr lists were actually pagans who had been persecuted).

I have a quick take on the violence in Orissa ,the views of a friend who has studied the same.Tribals,conversions,religious groups,violence ,etc.Perhaps this will clarify the situ and shed some light onto the problem.

The current reason for the Vatican's concern is that Catholics have been systematically and specifically targeted by one section of extremists,in a calculated manner.This group wants to eliminate the good work being done amongst the tribals by "Catholic" missionaries.These are, let us call them "orthodox" missionaries,whose aim is the upliftment and emancipation of illiterates and the poor,mostly tribals.The "orthodox" (Catholics)are not of the "evangelical" (American neo-Protestant)type.To give you an idea of how the Evangelical types function,or at least some of them (this is a first person account),one individual in another part of the country was offered upto "8 lakhs" if his family of four converted! This type has a different "mission",funding from Uncle Sam.A goodly part of the funding from the US is allegedly kept by the "pastor/farmer" ,who looks for a good "harvest" of souls to be converted.The more he converts,the more money he gets and everyone stays happy.The convert-who's got money in his pocket,the "pastor/farmer",who is being rewarded on earth for his pains by his master and the "master",the foreign provider of funds,whose grand scheme and operation is being executed according to plan.

Now,you may ask what has this all got to do with the tribals in Orissa and tribal conversions? well,the tribals are sitting on "tribal land" and formerly,when they needed money they asked for small amounts,pledging their valuable land as security.With literacy comes understanding of one's rights ,the true value of their land and naturally they now know how much their land is worth and are fighting for their rights! The extremist goons,who are stormtroopers for a motley gang of land grabbers are trying to prevent this emncipation of the illiterate and underprivileged.We are seeing at Singur the extent to what this can lead to.Sheer greed and the desire to grab tribal land is taking place all over the country,being committed by all shades and colours of the Indian spectrum .In some places and cases,religion and Marx has got mixed up with it,educating or supporting tribal rights,leading to conflict.
