It may not be out of context here that Indian water goes thru Bagli ghat to Pak and Indian farmers as well as India itself is imposing sanctions to use of water in country so that water can be saved. Any other country or for that matter even states in India cut each other's water.
So, this is known as 'pennywise pound foolish'.

Glory hunter 
The army chief tells the PM about the limits of history making.QUOTE17 November 2006: Around the time of the Pakistan foreign minister, Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri's insistence that a Siachen "solution" was days away, the prime minister had a quiet meeting with the army chief, General J.J.Singh. No ministers were present. It was just the general and his prime minister.

It is not clear which side sought the meeting. It is not that both sides are equal. If Manmohan Singh asks to see J.J.Singh , the general has to go. But the absence of ministers, just two men in a serious discussion mode, especially about a critical Indian Army concern, and taking place in the background of Kasuri's triumphalist proclamations, leads to only one conclusion.

This may be a wrong conclusion. But it seems to us right. Which is that the army chief sought the meeting, and the PM had to agree to it. This is no bending of protocol. While the PM has the authority to summon his army chief, the chief has the responsibility to be able to speak freely to the head of government, speak his mind even. We have a great precedent. General Sam Maneckshaw disagreed with Indira Gandhi on the timing of the 1971 war. She agreed to his dates. And he won the war for her.

Official sources said that General Singh asked the PM why the Pakistanis wouldn't agree to the Indian demand. Manmohan Singh apparently had no answer. When the PM couldn't answer, it dawned on him the extent of mistrust. General Singh understood. He said that in this environment of mistrust, the army could not be expected to make sacrifices in Siachen. He emphasized on "sacrifices". He added that the army would be deeply demoralized if orders went to vacate Siachen. He said more and this put the PM in retreat from any "out of box" solution he had dreamed up with General Parvez Musharraf in Havana.

The army has a distressing high suicide rate in Jammu and Kashmir. Officer-soldier relations are on watch. General Singh said that the army was in demoralization mode since the failed Operation Parakram. After Pakistani terrorists attacked Parliament House in December 2001, the then PM, A.B.Vajpayee, ordered the largest mobilization of the Indian Army since the Second World War. Once mobilized, under intense US pressure, Vajpayee got them stuck on the frontiers with Pakistan. For nearly nine months, the army stood deployed without a shot fired. The then army chief, General S.Padmanabhan, was deeply distressed, and subsequently fell out with the government.

That failed Operation Parakram has rankled with the military brass since. It lost India its last lever against Pakistani terrorism. With that precedent, it was clear India could never mobilize against Pakistan without the world exerting pressure, and we succumbing to it. General Singh apparently said that the failure of Parakram had demoralized the army, and the subsequent happenings in J and K. He said the army was finding it increasingly difficult to operate under this suspense of peace now, peace not now, even while terrorist infiltration was on the rise.

At some point, the PM said the government was still trying to understand Musharraf. This is a man who grabbed power from an elected government in October 1999, and prosecuted the Kargil War months before that. He wowed Manmohan Singh in Havana, this Houdini who plays the ends against the middle, and is leading the US and Nato to destruction in Afghanistan, even while receiving US largesse (Commentary, " India & Chinese ambitions," 16 November 2006). After seven years in power, the government claims no continuous understanding of him. And Manmohan Singh, who once famously said he could do business with Musharraf, now suddenly gets the cramps about the dictator. 

At this juncture, apparently General Singh said while the government cogitated on the trustworthiness of Musharraf, he be allowed to retain the status quo in Siachen. Officials don't say this. But anyone in the army chief's position would be barely able to disguise his contempt for a PM who fails to understand the snaky dictator of Pakistan. With the army chief's forceful representation of the military objections to a Siachen withdrawal, the PM was forced on the backfoot.

On Siachen, the PM was willing to overrule the defence minister. And he would not have listened to Pranab Mukherjee, who till recently held that post. Thus, General Singh had to do the tough articulation himself. Once the PM realized the military disaster of vacating Siachen, the rest of the government went into denial mode. Pranab was the first to scotch Kasuri's insistence on a Siachen "solution" within days. Others have followed.

Why is Manmohan Singh hell bent on a Siachen withdrawal? Before he goes in 2009, he wants to make his mark in history. A deal with Pakistan, he is convinced, will get him into the history books. So obsessed is he with making history, as Vajpayee disastrously was before him, Manmohan Singh is willing to court controversy and risks. He is the cheapest kind of glory hunter we have. He forgets Nehru who came to grief hunting glory with the Chinese. Manmohan Singh also disremembers Mrs Gandhi. She did what had to be done for the nation. The glory came on its own.

Nehru is fading away.
Indira Gandhi has grabbed history.
That's the way to go.

LAHORE: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has directed all banks and development financial institutions to freeze the accounts of two granddaughters of late tribal chieftain Nawab Akbar Bugti because of their alleged links with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).

According to an SBP notification, the Interior Ministry has declared that the daughters of Rehan Bugti, Mrs Zamour Domki and Mrs Zawazboh, have links with the BLA. Sources said that all of Mrs Domki and Mrs Zawazbohâs accounts had been frozen. They said the Interior Ministry had also contacted Interpol to trace BLA accounts abroad.


They are harassing freedom fighters.

PESHAWAR: A tribal journalist working for the BBC World Service and an English newspaper in South Waziristan was reported âmysteriously missingâ since Monday afternoon after he left Islamabad for Dera Ismail Khan. Zulfiqar Ali told Daily Times that his brother Dilawar Khan âwent missingâ on Monday after spending a night with him. He said that around 10 âsuspicious menâ visited the Islamic University where he is a student of the Law Faculty and asked him to go with them, but his friends advised him not to do so. Zulfiqar said that after the men left, he called Dilawar on his cell phone but a person identifying himself as Dr Jamshed told him that his brother had been injured in a road accident and was in a hospital. Zulfiqar said that he made the call on his brotherâs phone an hour after Zulfiqar left for Dera Ismail Khan. âEjaz Mehr, an Islamabad-based BBC correspondent, rushed to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences but he could neither find Dilawar nor the person who identified himself as Dr Jamshed when Zulfiqar called on his brotherâs phone,â a BBC journalist told Daily Times. A report for the missing journalist could not be registered in a police station as Zulfiqar is in a âstate of shockâ. Dilawar and Zulfiqarâs 15-year-old brother Taimur Khan was killed by unidentified men in Wana on August 30. The BBC headquarters in London has not yet released any statement but its Islamabad office established âinformal contactsâ with the military and civil administrations to report Dilawar Khanâs âdisappearanceâ. Dilawar had settled in Dera Ismail Khan after his familyâs school and home were attacked in Wana earlier this year. staff report

Fate of 1.5 million subscribers unclear

KARACHI : Millicom International, parent company of pioneer cellular service in the country Paktel, has closed down its call centre in Karachi, laying off 150 employees in what believed to be a gesture to wrap up operations in Pakistan.

Telecom sources said the company was in contract with a local operator of call centres, which was informed that Paktel was not interested in continuing such facilitation for its customers in line with its parent companyâs announcement to shut down its Pakistan operations.

âThe company (Paktel) actually had outsourced its call centres to local operators to facilitate customer services,â said a source privy to the development. âHowever, it recently cancelled or discontinued its effectiveness and ultimately caused unemployment of at least 150 call centre agents employed with the operators and working for Paktel operations.â

He said the recent move had triggered uncertainty among the employees coupled with already puzzled more than 1.5 million customers of the cellular company, but it had failed to cause alarm among government quarters and the authority concerned.

Millicom International last week announced it was considering strategic options for Paktel Ltd, where significant doubts affected confidence in the ability of the cellular service to generate returns on investment at the levels required by the company.

Paktel, which also operates AMPS (advanced mobile phone system), acquired $291 million GSM (global system for mobile communications) licence in 2004. However, the service failed to capitalise amid increased competition and financial crunch faced by its parent company across the globe.

Speculation grips the telecom industry as key cellular players, all of them with foreign stakes and management controls, see the Millicom announcement a significant development in the sector but obviously the negative one.

âSurely, this is not a good news at all,â said a senior official of one of the five other cellular companies. âBut one has to look at Paktel or Millicom history in Pakistan before reaching any conclusion. Millicom is already in the red due to financial problems so winding up operations in Pakistan in this context is natural.â

However, he said, it was the responsibility of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority - the telecom watchdog - to prevent the subscribers from losses and come up with a clear policy to avoid speculation and remove uncertainty, as the Millicom announcement left several questions unanswered.

But the regulator appears more concerned to get back its money rather than protecting consumer rights and job losses to the locals. âPaktel had to pay $29 million in account of licences fee instalment during the first week of November,â said a senior official who asked not to be named.

âBut they failed to meet the deadline. Now we have learnt through media reports that their parent company (Millicom International) wants to close it (Paktel) down but they have to clear their dues before the final decision.â

He said as the company failed to pay licence fee instalment within the given deadline, the authority could take action under the defined regulations in Cellular Mobile Policy 2003. The Luxembourg-based Millicom, which introduced cellular service in Pakistan through local operations named Paktel in early 90s, has already sold out its shares of Instaphone, another cellular company, to its local partner.

The company currently owns 88.9 per cent shares in Paktel and by September 2006 it was enjoying 1.52 million subscribers, up 62 per cent from 944,718 as at 30 September 2005 across the country.

Dubai shatters 'Dream Cruise' <img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Flush.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='Flush.gif' />

ISLAMABAD â The Dubai authorities have banned the entry of the cruise liner â Dream Cruiseâ in its waters following disappearance of three passengers travelling on the cruise, its very first trip to Dubai in the second week of November.

The first ever luxury cruise liner service launched in the first week of November by Gulf Dream Cruise Company, embarked upon the 5-day trip on November 7 from Karachi to Dubai.

On arrival the passengers were allowed to enter the city of Dubai by depositing their passports with the immigration authorities at the port.

When the cruise was ready to return to Karachi, the Dubai immigration officials found three passengers missing. After a detailed discussion with the cruise crew, the Dubai authorities realised that the missing passengers had come to Dubai with the intention to disappear.

The authorities in Dubai decided to confiscate the cruise but the timely intervention by Tourism Minister Nilofar Bakhtiar rescued the situation, however, the Dubai authorities banned entry of any cruise liner coming from Pakistan.

This incident left the Gulf Dream Company with no option but to abandon the cruising. The company is suffering heavy loss, as it has to house 300 foreign crew members and recently recruited 60 local employees, with no business in hand.

When the Minister for Port and Shipping Babar Ghauri was contacted he confirmed the incident and said the government is offering alternative options to the company that includes a trip between Karachi and Gawadar and âNowhere Cruisingâ.

Explaining the âNowhere Cruiseâ, the minister said that the liner would travel some distance in the sea and not to any foreign destination, station there for few hours with the passengers and return after entertaining them on board.

The company hired the liner from Athens and launched the project with much fanfare offering on board entertainment from dreamy cinematic scenes to live captivating concerts and best DJ performances, mind-boggling magical shows to 15 halal meals package with gourmet dinners.

There was Caribbean music on the deck as well as the ever popular duty-free shopping. The company was offering various packages for eager sea fares with the lowest fare at $549 (Rs32, 940) for round trip.

Our Monitoring Desk adds: The first-ever Pakistani Cruise Service has been subjected to delay after its maiden six-day cruise. President Musharraf had said while inaugurating the cruise service that it would not only promote the tourism in the country but it could also boost the image of Pakistan as peaceful and tourist friendly country But as it appeared the cruise service had been doomed to the jeopardy right before itâs launching, reports BBC.

On November 3, when the first Dubai-bound cruise was to set forth, it was delayed on account of security arrangements for the president and the passengers were shifted to another cruise that was scheduled to sail offshore on November 7.

It was not yet the end of hazards the cruise was destined to meet; the Rashid Administration on Dubai port was not ready to ascribe the ship anything beyond âferryâ so the âGulf Dreamâ had to be anchored at the cargo dock instead of cruise terminal. Moreover, passengers were told that they would not have to carry their passports along and that the card-cum-credit card issued to them for purchasing food and drinks during cruise would be acceptable to the immigration officials in Dubai as legal accreditation for their entry. Nevertheless, when the cruise ship anchored, it was revealed to the passengers that the people, who were carrying their passports along, were authorised to dismount from the ship and the rest were told that for their visas the efforts were underway.

Hearing this the passengers, mostly traders, industrialists, military personnel, relatives of government officials, newly-wed couples and bachelors, all culminated in an angry mob. It was only after three hours from that scuffle, that out of 245 passengers, 141 were finally granted the visas-but that too in a farcical situation. Some people were in dilemma because if a husband was issued a visa, the wife was denied and if a father was granted a visa, the denied. Vice Admiral Muhammad Haroon, Vice Chief of Staff Pakistan Navy, was also among the passengers. He too was granted visa after hours-long frantic efforts by Pakistan Foreign Office officials. The first thing he did on dismounting from cruise was to leave for country on the first possible flight. The others too analysing the events as they unfolded, decided to travel back through plane. The passengers who were denied the visas, as though avenging their discomfiture got to do shopping and took hours to return, far later than the scheduled time for ship to sail back. They returned loaded with stuff they had bought and then the cruise was allowed to sail back.

Rizwan Muhayudin, Chairman of the cruise company was also among the voyagers. He held the view that, had there been no scramble, all the passengers might have been granted visas. Supporting his argument he added that it was the angry mob like look that kept the Dubai immigration officials from issuing visas to all, because they feared that many passengers might slip into the Emirates. In an effort to compensate the visa-denied cruisers, the cruise administration, however, offered them either they could enjoy an honorary next cruise or they could opt for the refunding of half of the fare.

Rizwan revealed that he had been having difficulties from day-one. He told that there was no terminal at Karachi port. Dream Cruise got it built at its resources so that custom and immigration officials might sit together. About want of duty free shoping at the cruise, he told that according to state-law, the liquor can be brought in at ship but it couldnât be carried out of country, whereas to maintain other duty-paid items was not prudent idea according to business-logic.

As stated by the cruise brochures and web-site, the passengers were allured by the idea of getting the five-star service during cruise and that they could also avail the room service. Meanwhile it was also arranged to keep the cabin-phones all dead. Passengersâ dream of enjoying internationally renown concert performances was fulfilled by hearing some Khan sahibâs ghazals backed by harmonium and tabla and the other night the soul lead singer of Bombay Vicking, a pop group, did lip-singing of his hits. For cinema entertainment, the audience had to watch Shahrukh Khanâs remake of DON, over and over again whereas the Arabic version of hukah, âShishaâ, children day care services, magic shows, massage parlours and gymnasium, all remained confined to the brochures and web-site. The Internet, Satellite phone, or satellite channels or other services of similar nature were non-existent or perhaps those were beyond passengersâ knowledge.

Casino, however, was kept open for quite late at night wherein a few gambled seriously while others kept making eyes to the Ukrainian girls around. The onboard youth found a way to kill boredom by swinging to the Indian melodies that would be played on the deck whereas the old folk kept gazing the sea either form the windows of their cabins or reclining on the couch and the kid-lot fatigued themselves by jumping here and there. The standard of food, however, was good and included high-tea as well and eating four-times-a-day was the only entertainment and time-killing activity. On their return when those âfortunateâ first cruisers anchored at the Kimari dock after the delay of ten hours against the scheduled time, they were not allowed to dismount for an hour.

It was heralded that at first the family and luggage of the Vice Admiral would be alighted from the ship and then the rest would be able to dismount. Hence at first the family of the Lord of the Sea was escorted down from the ship and then the rest finally touched the ground. The cruise company officials are reluctant to say anything about the future of the cruise service but the resources of the Karachi Port Trust deem that the cruise of Dream Cruise has darted off somewhere but the dream still remains there.

Khan "told us that the Kashmir freedom movement was not part of the decisions taken during the recent Indo-Pak talks," Yousaf Nasim, convener of the PoK Hurriyat Conference was quoted as saying by a daily.

"The two countries agreed to share intelligence to counter terrorism," he told media persons.

A Tale of Two Cities is about Rawalpindi-Islamabad and its real name is A Tale of Two Shities. Hard Times is about martial la period. Bleak House is about PM House after my departure. Old Curiousity Shop is about GHQ. Dumbo and Son is about me and junior. Great Expectations is what I am having.

The British prime minister Tony Blair made a flying visit to Pakistan recently. He landed in Isloo, while the real PM was in Lahore so the latter was not on hand to receive his guest. Mr Blair then came to Lahore to parley with the real PM. Why they had to play cat and mouse had to do with security, we hear. Our mole reports that the Brits didnât want to tell the Paks where Mr Blair would land, except at the eleventh hour. Apparently, this is the form for all high profile foreign visitors now, because our VIP guests donât trust our security arrangements.

Naturally, the real PM and Shortcut were skeptical about this tall claim but being desperate for power as we are, they gave the man a hearing. Our mole reports the min pleaded his friendâs case very convincingly and the real PM agreed that the deed had to be done and all red tape cut to facilitate the Pak-American. Within a fortnight, sources say, all permissions were granted and the project was ready to go. Go nowhere, as it turned out. Islooâs goss is that the Pak-American businessman has no hardware to speak of and is now trying to offload the permissions he has so swiftly gained from the powers-that-be. We hear he has approached various business houses in the field to take the project off him.

Writing in Daily Pakistan, Maulana Abdul Majid Salik wrote a feature on Prime Minister Liaqat Ali Khan, emphasising that he wanted an independent foreign policy. He told Americans on a visit that Pakistanis donât accept either capitalism or communism; their lives revolve around the great principles of Islam. It is because of Liaqat Ali Khan that Americans starting believing that Islam has solutions for all the problems inherent in capitalism and communism. So Khan served the cause of din (religion) and mumliqat (republic) on his visit to America. He passed the Pakistan Resolution in the national assembly, which showed his commitment to Islam.

Cricket fans smuggle heroin to India
According to daily Jang, the anti-narcotics force raided a private university and recovered one kilogramme of heroin. The students, who belonged to middle class families, were going to India on a study tour and to watch cricket matches. The university administration locked the campus and ran away when they heard the news of the arrest of the students at Wahga. <img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' />Â The ANF is investigating the contacts of these students in Pakistan and India.

14 killed on moon sighting
According to daily Nawa-i-Waqt two groups, Lashkar-e-Islam of Pir Saifullah and Ansar ul Islam of Mufti Muneer Shakir, clashed over the announcement of Eid on Monday by the NWFP government. The violent clash left 14 dead in the Khyber agency. The two groups have fought holy wars over disagreement on issues of Sharia.

Stage dances popular with viewers
According to daily Khabrain, Saima Khan said that her performances are in great demand; that is why directors and producers are following her and begging her to perform in their productions. She would continue her âmission,â and as she is in good books of officers, she is not afraid of anyone. The walls of the jails are not so high that she cannot climb over them.

As reported in Daily Pakistan, girls in a white car abducted a 16 year old truck cleaner and injected him with drugs and then raped him. They left the boy in an unconscious condition by the roadside. The boy told the police that the girls gave him a lift and then took him to an unknown place. Then they got him drunk and injected him with some drugs. Then they started biting him and raped him so much that he became unconscious. The police claim that it is third incident in the same locality in Faisalabad.Â

Sarhad maulvis can see invisible things
In daily Express, senior columnist Hameed Akhtar wrote that the moon first showed itself to a number of people in the NWFP, who can see invisible things. Then next day, the moon showed itself to Maulana Fazal ur Rehman in his constituency of DI Khan. The rest of the country got to see the moon on Tuesday. He said there were a few people who saw the moon 72 hours earlier than the most powerful space telescopes. Eid was announced by a senior minister of MMA in NWFP. He said if these mullahs got the control of country, we can well imagine the fate of innocent Muslims who would be at their mercy. He said we might disagree with Pervez Musharraf, but have to agree with him that if ever these religious zealot groups came to power, they can destroy the country.

Only promises for earthquake victims
As reported in daily Khabrain, the majority of institutions who pledged money for the government scheme of âadopt-a-familyâ havenât fulfilled their promises. The Punjab police pledged to support 1,000 families at the rate of Rs 72,000 per family per year, but it didnât deposit any money. The Lahore chamber of commerce commited to supporting 500 families and so had to deposit Rs 36,000,000, but has only deposited Rs 1,600,000. The Faisalabad chamber of commerse committed itself to 500 families but deposited only Rs 3,600,000. The Sailkot and Multan chambers of commerce didnât deposit anything.

Daniel Pearl was executed by Khalid Sheikh
As reported in daily Nawa-i-Waqt, American officials stated that Daniel Pearl was killed by Khalid Sheikh Mohammad. Omar Saeed Sheikh was convicted and sentenced to death by a court in Pakistan for the murder of Daniel Pearl. Time magazine also reported that President Musharraf wrote in his book that the 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh, had a hand in the murder of Daniel Pearl. The American FBI team saw the film of the murder of Daniel Pearl and concluded that he was beheaded by Khalid Sheikh.

Swiss donât believe in life after death
As reported in daily Khabrain, only 14 percent of the population of Switzerland believes in life after death. 25 percent of the population doesnât believe in life after death and another 25 percent said it doesnât know the answer. According to a Protestant publicationâs survey, only 13.7 people said they would go to paradise. Nine percent believed in new life on this earth.

Only 38 people saw moon in NWFP
In daily Nawa-i-Waqt, lyrical columnist Irfan Siddique said while that the total population of NWFP is more that two crores, the shahadat of only 38 people was held above the opinion of the Astrology department, Sparco, and relevant experts. Maulana Fazl ur Rehman should investigate religious minister Maulana Amanullah Haqani. Why was the zonal committee of Peshawar forced upon the whole province?

American agenda
Sarerahe wrote in daily Nawa-i-Waqt that Alim-e-din Allama Mumtaz Awan, said the division of Muslims on Eid was a part of an American agenda. If two brothers are fighting on a property dispute, then one must assume that it is a part of an American agenda. Earning 100 percent profit in Ramadan, selling fake medicines and adulterated food items is also part of an American agenda. Only family planning has remained outside the American agenda. For more than fifty years we couldnât reform our police department because of American agenda.

Islamic revolution
Columnist Khurshid Nadeem opined in daily Jang that the senior minister of NWFP, Siraj ul Haq has resigned from the provincial assembly. Siraj ul Haq has stated that he wanted to concentrate on his efforts for an Islamic revolution in NWFP. Khurshid Nadeem wrote that according to Maulana Maudoodi, the way of Islamic revolution is the taking control of the state machinery by the salaheen (pious elders). The question is, if the clerical alliance has control over the state in NWFP, why doesnât it try to bring the fruits of Islamic revolution to the people lower down the ladder? If they want to leave the present government and work for revolution; would that new revolution be any different from the present government?

Rocket attacks on President Musharraf
According to Daily Pakistan, the culprits involved in the plan to attack the residence of President Pervez Musharraf with rockets included a son of a retired Brigadier of the Pakistan Army. The IG Islamabad, Iftikhar Ahmad Chaudhry, said all three terrorists were educated and that one was an engineer who was trained in building circuits. One rocket was fired near Ayub Park, close to the residence of Pervez Musharraf and three more rockets were found closer by. Another two rockets were found near the National Assembly and two were found close to ISI headquarters. Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said they wanted to fire all the rockets at the same time, but only one rocket exploded.

Jihad, shortcut to paradise!
According to daily Jang, Maulana Abdur Rehman Ludhianvi of Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees said that Jihad (holy war) and Qatal (murder on mass scale) is a guarantor of honor and of the survival of Muslims, while addressing a congregation in Jama Masjid, Lahore Cantt. He said Jihad is the shortest route to paradise. Every Muslim shall become a mujahid and work for the dominance of Islam. The worth of the last ten days of Ramadan shall be realised and utilised to appease God.

Paris, Nov 23 (ANI): A senior researcher working for a French think-tank has said that Iraq's disintegration would destabilise the Middle East and ultimately affect Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Citing reasons for the same, he said that if the Kurds' demand of independence is fulfilled, then the Balochs and the Pushtoons would also have to be given the same right.

"Destabilisation in the Middle East will spread to Pakistan. If we talk of an independent Kurdistan, why not give the same right to the Baloch and Pushtoons?" said the researcher at the European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris. He said this while talking to a group of Pakistani journalists who visited France last week.

"A wave of new independent states in the Middle East would not stop at Pakistan or Saudi Arabia," the Daily Times quoted him as saying.

He further said that Iraq's division would hit Turkey very hard, where Kurdish separatists were already fighting Ankara for an independent Kurdistan state that Iraqi and Iranian Kurds would also like to join.

"Pakistan may be affected if Iraq's disintegration takes place, and its aftershocks will be felt in Balochistan and NWFP," said the researcher.

Iraq's disintegration would also threaten Saudi Arabia, he said, but did not elaborate, and added: "The problem in Iraq is that the society is breaking up ... the problem is not that the country is breaking up."

He also warned the US against attacking Iran, saying the "US would pay a bigger price both in Iraq and Afghanistan if President George W Bush ordered armed forces to stop Tehran from making a nuclear bomb". (ANI)

Islamabad: President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday visited a temple of Lord Shiva in Karachi where he said historical places of all religions, including that of Hinduism, were an integral part of Pakistan's history and it was the priority of the government to maintain them.

Musharraf, currently on a visit to the Port city, drove down to a Shiv temple in the town which was one of the oldest in the region. He was received at the temple by its caretaker Suresh Manjani, state-run PTV reported. "Historical places of all religions including that of Hinduism are the integral part of Pakistan's cultural and geographical history," he was quoted as saying by PTV.

He said it was the priority of the government to keep them in shape so that they remain an asset and source of belonging for interfaith bonding and tourists around the world. Pakistan has some of the oldest Hindu temples which have remained neglected for over five decades. In 2004, the Pakistan government launched a Rs 10 crore project to renovate the Khatas Raj temple in Punjab province where the Pandavas are believed to have spent their exile. BJP leader LK Advani vusited the sprawling temple when he came to Pakistan.

India and Pakistan are currently working out a group tourist visa policy under which Islamabad plans to attract large number of tourists to visit historical places, including temples in the country.
