The Growing AID-India Scandal
<!--QuoteBegin-utepian+Jun 2 2005, 11:04 AM-->QUOTE(utepian @ Jun 2 2005, 11:04 AM)<!--QuoteEBegin--> I think this summarizes the nexus:

ah-ha. So they (FOSA) march with jihadis. But they get spotted. So they try to cover their tracks. They get spotted trying to cover their tracks. Then they say they were covering their tracks because they got spotted <!--emo&:o--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Note: Pakistan American Alliance(PAA) was added as a co-sponsor in the last few days leading to the event. <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->India-Pakistan Peace Solidarity March, San Francisco, May 15 2005

Statement of Clarification by the Friends of South Asia, on Pakistan American Alliance's co-sponsorship
From:
Friends of South Asia
San Francisco, CA, USA
mail@friendsofsouthasia.org
http://www.friendsofsouthasia.org
Date: June 01, 2005

We, the Friends of South Asia (FOSA) organized a mini peace march in San Francisco on Sunday May 15, 2005. The purpose of the march was to mobilize the South Asian community in the SF Bay Area, and show solidarity with the participants in the India-Pakistan Peace March [New Delhi to Multan, Mar 23 thru May 11], who marched across the subcontinent with the goals of establishing people-to-people contact, negating the tendencies of distrust, hatred and enmity, and spreading the message of peace and harmony. The event in San Francisco was co-sponsored by other allied organizations in the SF Bay Area, who lent their support by participating in the march and by spreading the word about the event amongst their members and well-wishers.

Given that the purpose of the event was to mobilize the community, FOSA welcomed a broad array of organizations that expressed interest in co-sponsoring the event. FOSA felt that it was important to host this event as a broad-based coalition in order to spread the word as widely as possible and to bring a diverse set of organizations who were working on allied causes, into the conversation on India-Pakistan peace.

One of the organizations that lent its name as a co-sponsor of the event was Pakistan American Alliance (PAA). FOSA has had no history of working with PAA, and was not fully aware of PAA’s politics, but considered this request since it was made by a senior member of the PAA, who also happens to be a well-known activist in the SF Bay Area, having worked on civil liberties issues and special registration, and a member of various other peace and justice organizations. This request came less than a week before the event, and hence didn’t allow enough time for the verification of PAA’s credentials – instead FOSA decided to accept the co-sponsorship in good faith.

Since the conclusion of the march, FOSA has become aware of PAA's website, and has developed  serious misgivings about some of the content on this website (http://www.pakalliance.org). FOSA is deeply disturbed by these contents, including pictures currently on the front page, and a report on a rally in New York on Oct 2004.

Very centrally and prominently visible in the picture of the PAA home-page, is a gentleman holding a sign that says: "Allah will destroy the terrorist state of India". This sentence is extremely offensive to FOSA’s members and partner organizations. FOSA also has serious issues with someone claiming either to "know the mind of Allah" or wishing the destruction of a nation that is a sixth of humanity.

The PAA’s report of the Oct 27th rally in New York and associated photographs (as found on their website) has led FOSA to surmise that in the PAA’s opinion, the sole responsibility and blame for the issues in Kashmir rest on the Indian state and its people. FOSA disagrees with this opinion, and believes that, at the very least, there also needs to be a critique of the role played by Pakistani state in fomenting the problem. Having said this, FOSA does respect the right of PAA to have a different political stand on this issue. What it finds most troubling is that the messaging used in the aforementioned rally seems to condone and encourage behavior bordering on hatred.

FOSA wishes to clarify that it has no issues with the mission of PAA and many of their activities as mentioned on their website – these are not in any conflict of interest with FOSA – the primary sources of confusion/misgivings are the PAA’s report of the Oct 27th rally, and associated pictures. FOSA has requested the PAA to provide a clarification on the disturbing content on their website, and to consider removing the offensive material, and is currently awaiting a response. In the meantime, FOSA has chosen to dissociate itself from the PAA, including dropping it from the list of co-sponsors for the solidarity march.

FOSA regrets any misrepresentation that its supporters and fellow-co-sponsoring organizations may have suffered as a result of the PAA’s association with the solidarity march, in light of the disturbing content on their website. FOSA is thankful to its fellow co-sponsoring organizations for their support, and believes that by endorsing this solidarity event, they have endorsed the movement for peace in South Asia, and not the agendas of other co-sponsoring organizations. FOSA wishes to assure its well wishers and supporters that it will exercise greater due diligence when partnering with organizations in the future.

On surface it appears to be true. But wait a minute. Isn't PAA the same as AMV? And didn't AMV march with FOSA in that very same San Fransisco about 3 years ago? Agenda back in 2002 was - no prizes for guessing: "Resolving Kashmir Problem" <!--emo&Rolleyes--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<b>SF Rally Calls for Resolving Kashmir Problem</b>
By Abdus Sattar Ghazali

San Francisco: A peace rally was held on June 10 at the United Nations Plaza in downtown San Francisco to express concern over the military standoff between Pakistan and India that could lead to a catastrophic nuclear confrontation. The rally, jointly sponsored by Pakistani, South Asian and American organizations and peace groups, called for according the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir.

Ms. Leila Soraya Salazar, Grassroots Organizer and master of ceremony, expressed concern over the deteriorating situation between Pakistan and India. She said, “We are against war, we want peace.” Ms. Zalazar thanked Mr. Inam Chaudhry, President of Kashmir Foundation, for initiating the rally to highlight the concern of the peace activists.

Mr. Chaudhry, in his brief speech, observed that the United Nations resolutions should be implemented and Kashmiris should be given the right of self-determination.

The activists carried banners and placards and chanted slogans that reflected the mood of the rally. The slogans read: No Nukes, Peace Now, Dialogue Now, Uphold Human Rights of All, Peace in Kashmir, When Governments Go to War People Die, Kashmir is for Kashmiris, Self-determination for Kashmiris, War is Not an Option for Nuclear Powers, South Asians Against War and Racism, Stop Military Buildup, and End State Violence in Gujrat

The speakers at the rally stressed that the governments of both India and Pakistan must abandon the path of war and settle their disputes in accordance with the dictates of international law, in particular, UN Security Council Resolutions of 1948 which give the people of Kashmir the final right to decide their own destiny.

Ms. Samina Faheem of the Pakistan Democratic Forum argued that today, there are people in Pakistan, Kashmir, and India who are open to new and creative solutions and who are open to fair and reasonable compromises. “We lend our full support to such individuals and groups on all sides because they stand to bring necessary flexibility and creativity to lessen polarization, affect de-escalation, and help create an atmosphere in which meaningful negotiations can take place.”

She called for an immediate disengagement of forces and cessation of hostilities and pointed out that a durable peace in South Asia is not possible without the solution of the Kashmir problem. “Enduring peace in South Asia necessitates justice for the people of Kashmir. Justice for the Kashmiri people will mean lasting friendship between peoples of Pakistan and India.”

The rally was organized by Pakistan American Democratic Forum, Pakistan Association of San Francisco, Kashmir Foundation, Friends of South Asia, California Peace Action, People’s Nonviolent Response Coalition, Coalition against Communalism and Global Exchange.

The peace rally ended with the signing of a petition that will be sent to the Indian Consul General in San Francisco and the Pakistani Consul General in Los Angeles. The petition reads: “We, the Undersigned, come together to say no to war and escalation of violence in South Asia and demand the following:

1. That the Indian and Pakistani governments work towards peace and not war. The people of India and Pakistan want peace and we demand that their governments not use war as a political weapon.
2. An end to ALL violence, including violent rhetoric and threats of war. We condemn all war, particularly nuclear war.

3. That Pakistan and India devote their resources to human needs and to ending social injustices, not on armaments and military expansion.

4. A de-escalation of the military build-up and war rhetoric.

5. A constructive and open dialogue between peoples and governments. Governments should resume political and diplomatic negotiations immediately and re-open communication lines between the peoples of India, Pakistan and Kashmir.

6. The people of Kashmir have the right to self-determination.

7. No US military intervention. The US should lead by example by immediately declaring a policy of no first use of nuclear weapons and initiating multilateral negotiations on the rapid elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide.

8. The United Nations should act to foster dialogue and negotiation between India and Pakistan and a de-escalation of violence and war rhetoric.”

How does one withdraw a sponsor after the sponsor has sponsored the event? What does a sponsor sponsor in a march? Samosas? Roohafza? FOSA might as well change its name to South Asian Militants Ordering Succulent Aloos. <!--emo&Tongue--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That's easy utepian. When PAA holds the next rally, FOSA and AID will be there to serve the kebabs and rooh-afza and say - <i>yeh lai, tera hisab fitoos</i> (loosely translated - with this we close the account)

Of course, we'll see PAA morph into another new entity as they did from AMV to PAA. And it'll be yesterday all over again...

Folks, this thread is to collect facts, evidence and analyses. No rants, pls, though certainly the humorous side of this should not be overlooked, in view of the very large egos that are apparently involved.

There is clearly a growing controversy about the history, nature and current activities of the organization called "AID-INDIA". Some recent things that come to mind:

1. Senior leaders of AID-INDIA participated in a recent Bay Area march along with Pakistan-American Alliance members carrying posters saying:
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->ALLAH WILL DESTROY TERRORIST INDIA<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

leading Sulekha postors to wonder whether AID stands for
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->ALLAHS FOR INDIA'S DESTRUCTION<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Asked to explain this atrocious behavior, the Board of Trustees of AID-INDIA, and functionaries below them, have been equally evasive.

2. AID-INDIA blatantly participated and solicited funds for the "PadaYatra" by "ASHA for Education" founder and leader Sandeep Pandey, spending some $20,000 on what was clearly a political grandstanding exercise with no charitable project justification. I for one fail to see how this can be legal under the IRS rules for 501c3 charities. The "Padayatra" incidentally, was a flop since the Pakistanis refused visas even to the most pro-Pakistani of the marchers. There is no evidence that donations were returned to donors, so one must ask what happened to the money. I would think that all AID-INDIA donors who have claimed tax deductions for donations to this "charity" since 1991, now face the choice of either filing amended tax returns and withdrawing the deduction and paying the added tax with penalties - or waiting for the IRS to come after them for fraud, since they must clearly be aware by now about the nature of AID unless they are former O.J. Simpson Jurors.

3. AID-INDIA collected over $1M as donations after the tsunami. There is no evidence that they were even in the area until several days after the tsunami, and their own statements show that they had no direct presence in the affected areas, except for some functionaries sitting in the relief distribution centers, or driving trucks around with journalists. They claim that their grassroots relief delivery was done by DYFI and TNSF "volunteers". Pinged on this, they got their media friends to make blatantly false statements like "DYFI has NOOOO political connections", managing to fool some of the many desis who would indeed qualify as O.J. Simpson jurors.

Recent photos of DYFI "volunteers" burning buses, looting and ransacking educational institutions, throwing stones at law-enforcement personnel and indulging in other violence, prove that the statements by AID were absolutely false. There is no explanation forthcoming from AID leaders for this.

Also, the owner of the Sulekha Portal, Mr. Satya Prabhakar, made a personal appeal and set up a very unique "Sulekha Matching" scheme where Sulekha claimed to "match" donations to AID. It turned out that Sulekha was simply taking 50% of the donations from people, and calling them "Sulekha Matching". At the time this appeared to be a very shady deal, but now it appears to match the standard ethics of the AID-INDIA organization. Prabhakar has not commented on the concerns about how the funds are being used.

4. A couple of days ago, an AID-INDIA initiated Petition with obvious political motivations bypassed the Maharastra Mandal Convention in Atlanta, and disturbed a faculty meeting at Georgia Institute of Technology with visiting Maharashtra CM V. Dehmukh in another political granstanding exercise: the Faculty Advisor of AID at G.I.T. delivered a "Petition" to the CM accusing him of violating the human rights of slum dwellers in Mumbai, and that of course was blazoned all over as a major victory.

5. There is a growing list of documents at the site http://www.aidindia.info. The evidence there is very damning against AID-INDIA. AID leaders have vehemently denied that the information is true, but their own actions repeatedly lead the impartial observer to say: "Q.E.D."

6. Beyond what the aidindia.info site records, there are serious suspicions around that AID-INDIA , headquartered in College Park Maryland, is a front organization for the CPI(Marxist-leninist) Party in India. In 2004, CPI(M/L) officially merged with the Naxalite terrorists, and formed CPI(Maoist) , linked to the Nepalese terrorist "rebel" CPN(Maoist) which is invading that country and murdering thousands of people. Both CPN(Maoist) and CPI(Maoist) are on the 2005 List of Terrorist Organizations of the United States State Department.

Thus, donors to AID-INDIA face the added headache (a VERY serious one) of being accused by Homeland Security of donating money to known, declared foreign terrorist groups.

Incredibly, there are still desis who are unaware of much of this, and are being suckered every day by the glossy web pages and tear-jerking propaganda pamphlets of the AID-India. They claim that the "projects" of AID-INDIA are excellent.

I think it is time to focus on the reality of those "projects" to remove that misconception. Behind every AID-INDIA funded project appears to be a scam to either channel funds to terrorists, or encouraqe whatever group is destabilizing the government and creating fertile environments for Communist recruitment, towards a Communist takeover of India.

Comments/ info please.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->AID : Activities of Balaji Sampath at IIT Chennai
http://intellibriefs.blogspot.com/2005/0...th-at.html

From an eyewitness

I first heard about AID in my first year at IIT. It was the time they were starting , and naturally, as is the common practice today too, their introductory notice will attract anyone interested in helping the people of India. Added to it was the emblem with Gandhiji, and I could not help missing the first programme they organised. I remember that it was a movie show, on some social issue, probably organised together with the NSS of the institute.

I don't remember much of the other details , but what I remember clearly was that one claims made was that AID runs a tuition center in Tharamani, a village outside IIT. I knew that NSS runs tuition centers, but this was new info to me. Indeed during the programe, they gave pamphlet saying how we could help, and one was money, another volunteering. I was interested in volunteering and so approached one of the co-ordinators, and offered help. I asked him what exactly was my work, and where is the center' His reply was something in this line "As of now, we don't have a center. But we have the Tamil Nadu Science Forum's(TNSF) project of developing some softwares for village education"! Some how, it did not strike me that it could be a deliberate attempt to mislead, I thought it was just a slip. But the AID lies were only starting there.

This particular one, the tactic is very clear- those who want to check it up properly, they will tell the truth. For others, who are too busy to volunteer, can donate money. By the way, I remember a friend of mine from IIT sending me AID newsletter of this year, and she asked me about AID. <b>The newsletter claims that there is a tuition center at Tharamani with 70 kids. I asked her to go and verify if there is a center, and decide for herself. I did not hear from her ever since. </b>

Another BIG claim made by AID is the following. "AID is related to TNSF, similar to Kerala Shastra Saahitya Parishad(KSSP), who were instrumental in making Kerala 100 percent literate state". This is a very misleading statement. The literacy campaign in Kerala was a government programme. In two phases, under two governments, it took nearly a decade. Govt money was used. People from various walks of life volunteered. I have a friend of mine, living a few miles away, who volunteered, who had nothing to do with KSSP. True, some of there volunteers might have done some work, esp as this organisation is basically a leftists organisation, and communist govt was for once involved in the programme. But to claim that they are responsible for the literacy of Kerala is nonsense. In fact these people get involved in more of political matters than anything else. (and TNSF, they claimed is like KSSP) The initial experience prevented me from volunteering for AID, but I did try to attend their functions.

The next one I remember (chronolgy might be wrong), is the AID skit arranged during Saarang, the cultural festival of IITM. With lots of goofs, it was something people laughed at, but more so, may be for the idea. I believe its one of AIDs std skits, as it was screened in my University a few months before. I don't remember the name of the skit, but basically it was about what would have happened if we were able to change some events.

Now the first event was the death of Gandhiji. Let's assume it did not have any political intentions, but then when the character Godse came to the stage, he had a big red Tilak marked on his forehead! Now that was something I took some time to understand.

From what I remember from "Freedom at Midnight", Godse was kind of an atheist. even if not, he was not, for what i know, one who would put a tilak and walk around, esp when u go to kill Gandhiji. Leave it to you to decide, if AID had some motive or not.... So far - I wouldn't say so good- but not really bad.

And then came the big moment. AID organises a screening of Anand Patwardhans movie "In the name of Raam". They put up notices in all hostels. The notice I remember was so anti Hindu and inflammatory, and faced lot of opposition from almost all hostels, that they had to remove that one, and make an altogether new, mild one. To know more about the movie, see http://www.geocities.com/satyawaadi/ram.html The movie was screened, and AID had announced that a discussion will follow- a discussion, mind you, not a lecture. The big wig of AID Balaji Sampath, comes to the stage (eh, I thought its a 'discussion') and starts addressing the audience- not invite questions... He starts off , and after saying that AID organised an anti BJP rally and all that, he says

"You have to understand the fact....". Now that's a very nice way to start. as though what he is saying is Gospel truth . Let's call this the BS method, as we will have to use this abbreviation a lot. to continue "...the fact that the entire ramjanmabhoomi movement was an attempt by the sangh parivar, to cover up its casteism, and anti backward casteness". That was the first shock that day.

Myself belonging to a backward caste , I have always been sympathetic to the temple cause, and was convinced of the dirty games played by the leftists after I read "RJM vs BM" by Koenraad Elst (btw, these leftists have tried a lot to throw dirt on the scholarship of Dr Elst, not by attacking the facts that he presents in his books, but by general shouting). the second part of the book is available at http://www.voi.org/books

A volley of questions followed and people started arguing with him. He started dismissing each of their (and mine, as i too had started arguing) facts as "those are exceptions. what i am saying is the actual truth in general". another of the BS method (or shall i call it AID way- recently a friend of mine who attended, probably for the first time, an AID discussion , told me that he was amazed at the way these people coin their own theories to fit their needs ). Unfortunately, because of the short notice, I could not get the books needed, and none of the others had bothered. On the other hand BS would have been quite prepared- but then based not on facts , but BS (or AID) theories

Some body got so angry that he stood up and said "So then let's all get converted to Christianity. BS gave a vague smile....(might have been deeply happy inside at the proposal) Another of his showpieces was, whom he claimed something like "an history scholar". This lady, did not seemed to give any historical data, but just nodding her head for whatever BS was saying, and saying her own propaganda. Now, its possible that she was, whom BS later married- Kalpana, a JNU graduate and active in a leftists women's organisation.

<b>Now people had by now understood their political motives and had started shouting "communists" Initially they denied, but at some point the lady got so irritated that she said "there is nothing wrong with being communist".  </b> fine, if u believe so, but why did the admission come so late, that too after apparent denials? You could have come under the banner of CPI, or is CPI=AID ?

Now do I need to show how much anti Nationals the commies are- sorry, they are Nationalists, big time, but Chinese Nationalists, as Rajeev Srinivasan says in his column http://www.rediff.com/news/2002/jun/21rajeev.htm and Marx indeed justified Bristish rule in India, called India a semi barbaric country (those who think so should probably go thro' the Gandhian Dharampal's "The Beatiful Tree" and the "Rise and Fall of Great Nations" by Paul S Kennedy - I have gone thro' the first and have seen seen some statistics being quoted from the second), and probably even said that Communism can be spread in India only by diluting the Hindu ethos (My attempts to find the actual wordings did not succeed) and ya, what to speak of Rajane Palme Dutt, often referd to as "Father of Indian Communism" , who wrote one full book "India Today" about how things should be in India, all sitting in England, and not having visited India, till much after he finished his work . I get memories of Max Muller, who never visited India, but was paid by the British,(10,000 pounds ????) to discredit Hinduism by his Aryan Invasion theory , something as much not based on facts as BS theories..

Now the second and bigger shock was coming. BS goes on to say "After all not all people worship Rama. Most Dalits in TN worship Ravana and considers Rama as the villain ". This was taking things too far, and did get the most fitting reply, from none other than the (private) security to the screening hall, who apparently fitted into the very same category BS was mentioning . He said "Saar Appudiyellam sollakkoodathu, Raman Thaan Nammoda Daivam " (Sir,please do not say things like this. Ram only is our God) . This time BS was speechless. I wonder why his theory of "you are an exception" did not work here - may be the polite way the person who put it, or may be the big applause that followed

But BS was not ready to give up. One after the other, he was bring out the "casteism of sangh parivar". I don't know if this fool doesn't know that one of the objectives of sangh parivar is to unite Hindus beyond their castes and to get rid of that system. O ya, there is another thing that he said too. Whatever backward castes supporters are there for the temple, is only to cover up its casteism. I donno how this theory works, but its probably not much different from what they normally say whenever they see lot of backward castes support causes like this "They are being used by the sangh Parivar "

Now, what was his "Ravana -God" theory ? If at all there are Dalits who worship Ravana, is he and the likes of him not trying to use him. And ya, I must tell u a secret. The sangh parivar paid me a huge sum for supporting the temple cause. Do you want some of that money for AID? I know even though you people keep saying "we have nothing to do with religion" and all, one of the big collection that AID gets for the concerts its organise is by sitting with tickets in the local temple(atleast that's what an AID vol here told me). Basically , the same commie funda. Take money and use it against the very people from whom you take it.

BS takes out his next weapon. Ekalavya. one usual thing taken up by commies. Now please note that the good part of the Puranas, the commies believe were all a myth. But for incidents like ekelavya's, it is surely a case a caste discrimination, Oh well, not just that a discrimination of Hindus against the tribes. One of the commie in the ASHA discussion group (more about this later) had to say that one tribe in MP does not use thumb in archery, and that is because they are descendants of ekalavya! no proof what so ever... The belief that ekalavya was discriminated was pefectly correct, not just that, has to be exploited, but the Hindus belief that Rama existed is "nonsense and baseless" anyway, one sangh supporter from the crowd (he had actually made BS eat his words quite some time, and was clearly better in arguments except for his rather poor English speech) asked him what he had to say about Ekalavya sports fest or so organised by the sangh. BS says its a cover up- the commies can "use" his name, but none else!!

Now BS resorts to a book. He says (all this while he has been addressing from the stage, any one oppossing him has to shout from the back)"let me read u out something from this book ..." People started shouting "Which commies ' book is it ?" . I clearly remember BS turning to the front page of the book , taking a look and saying "No no, this is written by Golwalkar ". Now that was another of BS trick. What he meant was, the passage he is going to read was written by Golwalkar. But the question raised, and the way BS looks at the front cover, makes u believe he is holding Golwalkar's book.

It turned out the book he was holding was " Khakhi shorts and.... " - I don't remember- written by the likes of Romila Thappar, known for bluffing, and distorting history to fit the leftists view point. of interest will be http://www.voi.org/general_inbox/pramod/...e_mem.html

and http://www.voi.org/ indology review section Now BS reads out a sentence from the book, which was a written by Golwalkar . I think it was something like "In India there will be communal harmony only when Muslims starts respecting Hindu Gods and vice versa". BS started arguing "why should it be so. Why should a Muslim worship a Hindu God "

I asked him if he considers that statement relevant in the aftermath the communal tensions due to Muslims refusing to sing (and allow singing) Vandemaataram, because Qoran says they should not bow anyone but Allah( by the way, Bhaarat for many Hindus is God). He said "No no, the case you are saying is an exception ". Oh, sorry sir, I did not know that I am in the plane in which BS theory is valid .......

Anyway, AID had to stop its 'discussion' as the hall had to be closed down. AID started facing stiff oppossition in the campus. In fact during Saarang AID had kept a donation box, and had collected quite some sum (no receipts given, no idea where this money goes - if u ask, they will ask u to come to their meetings and find out- mind u people from outside the city and even state come for saarang ) <b>Even those who had put only 10 rupees started going and demanding their money back. </b>

But AID "continued its activities", until may be a year or more later the IITM chapter was dissolved for "lack of volunteer support " Couple of words about another vol in my hostel. He was supposedly the co-ord for some teaching section of AID, but by his own admission, has never gone to a tuition center run by AID . On Aug 15, I see a sticker on his door, of a tricolour flag. Green on top, Saffron in the bottom (Since its a wheel at the center, U actually need to know , can't guess...). So I knock on his door and ask him "Eh man, what is this ?". He replies "Eh, you don't know what it is ?". I said " I am not so sure ". He started kind of laughing at me "Eh, you don't know what this is......" . I said "It doesn't appear to be what I think it is " at this moment, he paused, took a better look, and with a vague smile asked me "Eh which colour comes on top daaa...?"<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Incredibly, there are still desis who are unaware of much of this, and are being suckered every day by the glossy web pages and tear-jerking propaganda pamphlets of the AID-India. They claim that the "projects" of AID-INDIA are excellent. ...

Comments/ info please.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I can vouch for the pamphlets etc part. I had once, a long time ago, gone to an AID sponsored event in College Park. By the general "desi" atmosphere there, you would not know that these people were in cahoots with communists and naxals. And most of their "volunteers" were either genuinely taken for a ride or were laughing at us gullible Indians behind our backs. They were bending over backwards to show how they were all into uplifting the downtrodden etc. <!--emo&--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Most desis just go to the events as "hey, they are showing XYZ at College Park", then when they are buying samosas in the break, the AIDers move in. No donor has any idea what their money will actually do; they are all taken in by the orphans on the pamphlets, as most good people will be.

AID has an icon all for itself: <!--emo&:liar liar--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/liar.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='liar.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The list of companies funding AID was previously available for all public to see. After the expose of AID as a dubious charity, this list was made off limits to the public. But I had this list stored on my hard drive. And I am now making this list available to the public. It will be a good idea to write to them and inform them about the new things that has been made known about this "charity".

THE MUSLIM EMPOWERMENT - A RATIONAL APPROACH
Date:
Sun, 11 May 2003 14:42:26 +0530

Dear Friend,

This is a fund-raising mass mail designed for the Muslims. If you like it, perhaps you may help me reach it to a large number of Muslims and those appreciating the Muslim-dilemma. Yes, I am sure to receive some flak but I believe that it is a truthful analysis and a sincere approach. Thanks galore - Jowher

=======================
Dear Friend,  Assalam-u-alai-kum

It was about 14 months ago that over 2,000 innocent Muslims were killed, about 700 orphaned and a like number of women disrobed in Gandhi’s land in Western India. A hundred thousand houses and roughly as many commercial establishments perished. Livelihood losses are beyond reckoning. Highly insufficient compensation and virtually non-existent prosecution added insult to injury. And many of those responsible for this were rewarded with massive political power. All this by an otherwise calculating and intelligent Gujarati Hindu society.

Like you I felt outraged and sought out to know. As I discovered more I felt compelled to devote my full time to promote inter-faith harmony and Muslim empowerment. This mail is the story of my struggles of these months. Can you spare 14 minutes reading it? For your convenience the details have been carried over to Part-II which you may skip for today.

There is no country, barring South Africa, where Muslims are in minority and earn better than the majority, says Dr Nejatullah Siddiqui of King Abdulaziz University. According to him security threat, illiteracy and poverty remain three most serious issues of the Muslim society, worldwide.

Dr Mahathir Mohammed of Malaysia has repeatedly held Muslim obscurantism responsible for halting Muslim progress. Shockingly, he says, automobiles and even electricity were forbidden for some time. No wonder, the industrial revolution passed the community by.

Several Human Development Reports sponsored by UNDP and various regional UN Funds indicate that Muslims lag behind in several crucial areas of today’s life. A comparison of Nobel Prizes won by Muslims vis-à-vis the Jews will frighten you: the Nobel per million Jews counts over a 100 times more than that for the Muslims.

How many Muslim names can you recall scaling the peaks of the Himalayas, measuring the depths of the Atlantic / Pacific, or traversing the vastness of the space? Or in the frontiers of cutting edge science and technology? Where are the world’s best universities, hospitals, parks, libraries, laboratories? And which Muslim countries are the world’s most functional democracies, have relatively independent press and judiciary, offer equal rights to their women, encourage independent professional and worker’s associations? A reading of the recently released Arab Human Development Report – authored by distinguished Arab Muslims – will sadden you, like it did me.

Why, just look around. We use with gusto electricity, telephone, television, computer, car, airplane, stethoscope, camera and 200 other items of daily use, none of which was invented by a Muslim. Indeed, if we were content to use only Muslim discoveries, many of our ailments would become fatal, as much of modern diagnostic and treatment - from stethoscope to MRI - are the creation of the Christian world.

Come to think of Muslims: from the 7th century AD through well into 13th century AD this community produced world class stalwarts in several leading fields of knowledge of those times. It facilitated the renaissance of Europe and enriched the world with significant advances in mathematics, medicine, astronomy, philosophy, geometry and chemistry. India is dotted with their creations: Tajmahal, Gol Gombuz, Charminar, Lal Quila, Shalimar.. In India their massive contribution - encompassing everything from administration, urban planning, architecture, civic amenities.. to literature, dress, music, food and mannerisms - has incredibly improved Indian lifestyle. Even the Gujarati language has over 40% words straight from Arabic and Persian. But are we the deserving heir to the legacy of these champions of knowledge, inquiry, exploration, justice, truth and industry?

// Tujhe aaba se apne koi nisbat ho naheen sakti - ke too guftar, woh kirdar, too sabit, woh sayyara [Allama Iqbal: you can have no connection with your ancestors, for you talk, while they worked, you are static while they were dynamic.]//

So, does the Muslim backwardness give the VHP, the Israeli fanatics, Bush and Blair the license to murder and maim Muslims? Most certainly, no. These barbarians violated human rights, are outright criminals and must be dealt with as such. I have written extensively on these lines. Incidentally, twice I escaped being killed by the Hindutva, myself. I beg to say, nevertheless, that these oppressors only indicate a part of the problem: the EXTERNAL one.

Will we not ask, even after all this, why WE happen to be the target, worldwide? And how come the criminals get away with crimes against us? One word answer: DISPENSABILITY. Just as we discard our hair without pain, the society hurts Muslims without being hurt significantly.

If you are hurt reading this, consider how hurt I must be recognizing these and writing this. And please remember I have given up my work and committed full time to the service of Muslims. But as a rationalist I cannot bury the reality underneath the carpet and yet pretend to serve sincerely.

In 55 years Indian Muslims did not give to themselves one national newspaper, TV channel, a large enough commercial bank, a major university. Ahmedabad has over a million Muslims who between them have only one college [and only for girls]. Not ONE boy’s college in ten lakh people! Amongst about 250 IAS and 150 IPS officers of Gujarat in all there are 8 Muslims. For a long time in Gujarat a Muslim is unlikely to be in the Ministry. So where are we? In Indian Parliament the share of Muslims has shrunk considerably. And we are not talking about quality.

You are unlikely to find worthwhile multi-disciplinary hospitals, working men’s / women’s hostels, parks and gardens in Muslim inhabited areas. Not for us the benefits of modernity: vast, beautiful roads, recreation centres, badminton courts, swimming pools. Not for our children the slides and swings. Not for our elderly the greenery of the lawns to share togetherness as the chabootra of the chowk is now their fate. Narrow lanes, open drains, small houses, the goat and the hen.. indicate a Muslim basti. Thanks to Hindutva, even the rich Muslim must construct his bungalow in an undeveloped mohalla.

Our poor have to queue up in the charitable hospitals managed by those we call the Kafirs. Even our rich must cultivate some Holy Father for admission of their ward in the English medium school. As a bank CEO I have known multitude of Muslim borrowers raising expensive credit privately from the Mahajan who against their collateral raised cheaper credit from the bank. The claimants to the legacy of the Rahmatul Lil Alameen are not now even Rahmatul Lil Muslimeen.

Zoya Hassan commissioned ORG-Marg to profile about 10,000 women in 40 districts. The result? Muslim illiteracy = 60% [in the North, upto 85%. No wonder most sisters believed Polio vaccination caused impotence!]. "Talabal ilma fareezatun ala kulli muslimin wa muslimatin" is completely forgotten. Only 3.5% Muslim girls reach the college. After all their average marriage age is 15 years – much to their chagrin. A NCAER survey indicates that the pre- and post-natal expense on our women is nearly the lowest in India. Surely, we are ensuring that the future Muslim is born of the illiterate and the impoverished mother.

2002 was not the first time we were maimed. In Ahmedabad itself we were brutalized in 1969, 1985, 1992.. by which time western Ahmedabad was virtually “cleansed of Muslims”. The Palestinians, the Bosnians, the Afghans and the Iraqis continue to be traumatized in their own homelands. And the world goes about its business.  My friend, unless there is a paradigm shift in our understanding and priorities little will change. The answer: true Muslim EMPOWERMENT. Let’s clarify.

When your neighbour – a Vasant or a Victor – falls sick, you may, at his family’s request go, fetch the grocery. You may also drop his kids to their schools and bring them back home. But, however much Mrs Vasant / Mrs Victor may request, you are unlikely to go, offer prayers at the temple / church for them. That is how it is. When issues remain in the secular / social domain most people help. But when they are given religious colour, only the co-religionists [and only of your hue/caste] may help. Our problem is that we do not separate the religious from the secular domain, Huqooq-al-Lah from Huqooq-al-Ibad. And thus not only do we neglect some priority social reform but also lose on world goodwill.  Hence my work is not about Islam. It is about Muslim empowerment. With honest introspection and scientific reasoning. The religious part is best left to the Ulema.

Maulana Waheeduddin Khan [a member of SPRAT’s Central Advisory Board – with other distinguished men like Dr Abid Hussain, Mr Zafar Saifullah, Dr Farooque Abdullah etc. as shown in Part II] says that Muslims as individuals become practical but as a community always seek the ideal – and end up nowhere. After all, don’t most of us, as individuals, study medicine, engineering, IT and the like [instead of Hifz and Qirat], and seek immigration to the western countries [instead of, say, to Somalia and Bangladesh], seek the highest paying jobs and dealerships regardless of whether these benefit Muslims or not? While we cultivate our paradise on earth, to the poor left behind we sermonize puritanical religiosity and the promise of the eternal heaven – as if misery on earth is the only route to the bliss of heaven. Collective myopia, mass hypocrisy and insensitivity to suffering are thus legitimized.

SPRAT is not about religion. Indeed, it is not about Muslims alone, though substantially it focuses the Muslim empowerment; it supports all marginalized sections of our society. And Muslims ARE marginalized in Indian economy, governance, education and generally in the society. All available data indicate that Indian Muslims are headed to become the new Dalits of India in a hundred years. SPRAT serves the Muslims openly and boldly: when we serve Indian Muslims, aren’t we serving India? No wonder the goodwill of the thinking and conscientious Hindus is available to this cause. Notice that some members on SPRAT’s Board of Governors [Part II shows a list] are very eminent Hindus. Allama Iqbal’s “Dard-e-dil ke waste paida kiya insaan ko; warna ta`at ke liye kuch kam na they karro bayan” [man was created for compassion, not just for worship] defines our mission: EMPOWERING THE IMPOVERISHED.

After providing the immediate relief and rehabilitation [about Rs.20 million] we focussed two crucial areas on a longer term: promoting inter-faith perception [specially correcting the Gujarati Hindu perception of the Indian Muslims] and the empowerment of the weaker sections, with special focus on Muslims. This is sought to be achieved through a carefully planned network of multipurpose community empowerment centres, called the CARAVAN, with coordinated support from satellite centres like AZMAT and BASERA [details in Part II] and connected to our own intranet [the CaravaNet].

The first CARAVAN, at Vatwa, Ahmedabad – supported by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation – was launched by the City Mayor. The second one came up at Himmatnagar through private funding. Chief Justice Rawani [retd] and MP, Madhusudan Mistry inaugurated it. Four more are coming up at Shah Alam, Mehsana, Surat and Bharuch. At least a dozen other towns are clamouring for a centre each. Please read all about these – and about our other initiatives – on our website. And if you find this inadequate or cannot connect, please ask us to send documents offline. In soliciting a reply you will please recognize that, like you, we are also pressed for time.

In a society where charity traditionally flows largely to religious institutions, little remains for social and secular causes. Our progress, therefore, is impeded due to lack of resources. For these centres, besides money for working capital, we need assets ranging from PCs and data projectors to books and furniture. For the central coordination cell we require lots of research reports / publications, a powerful video camera, a couple of laptops etc. Where suitable premises are not available rent-free, we also need these and to carry out their renovation we need adequate building material. Suitable Funding Options have been packaged to sponsor specific initiatives in their entirety as shown in Part II.

I have substantially down-sized and completely handed over my management consultancy company to the professionals. They earn my livelihood. And for the present I have placed this infrastructure at SPRAT’s disposal. In due course – and as our work becomes more credible – we will strive to set up SPRAT’s own facilities. And hopefully someday a powerful research and media support centre.

We are a registered Public Charitable Trust and Society. And yes, we enjoy Sn 80G exemption under Income Tax Act and hold FCRA registration. We seek and accept help coming through completely legal channels and without strings attached, except, of course demands for accountability and transparency. Why should you give? Because you hold your head high when a Muslim anywhere does something good. Because you hang it in shame when he is forced by hunger to commit a crime. Because they matter to you. In any case, who else will?

And more than anything else we want people: young, talented men and women committing at least one year. We can only offer a subsistence pay with modest boarding and lodging.

DIRECTIONS FOR EMPOWERMENT

********************************
A. CARAVAN EMPOWERMENT NETWORK *
********************************

BACKGROUND

True education leads to increased information, more rational thinking and greater harmony. Conversely ignorance causes impoverishment, isolation and obscurantism. Poverty and illiteracy reinforce each other. Knowledge must, therefore, contribute to empowerment.

“Educate a man, you educate an individual and educate a woman, you educate a family” goes the saying. So women’s empowerment assumes all the more importance. Education, however, is not just diplomas and degrees. Structured information should contribute to knowledge and result in wisdom. It is this philosophy that defines CARAVAN’s mission:

*******************************************************************
*Empowerment of the impoverished through information and exposure.*
*******************************************************************

Inter-faith and social misconceptions pervade Gujarat and its common people have suffered massive economic losses in the recent disturbances. SPRAT recognized this region as a natural territory to start its work from. Dedicated to the promotion of rationality it rose to the call and set up a division: CARAVAN - a network of community empowerment centres - to empower the society through increased learning and earning opportunities.

OBJECTIVES

For the empowerment of weaker sections CARAVAN has defined the following objectives:

Promoting across all age groups a culture of learning, questioning  and rational thinking in daily life, through provision of reading facilities, interaction and film shows.

Helping promote micro-economic enterprises, including business organizations, cooperatives and self help groups - specially for women - towards overall economic empowerment.

Facilitating the availment of existing government and other institutional support schemes and providing everyday information in a wide range of areas for material advancement.

Honing exam-taking skills of the young in the current examination system, with the twin objectives of mass education and academic excellence. The latter should also improve weaker section’s share in governance through public services.

Promoting inter-community brotherhood by encouraging in myriad informal ways, dialogue and discussions between individuals from all social divisions.

Building and studying databases,  and representing to the regulating agencies for appropriate welfare schemes

FACILITIES

To achieve the foregoing objectives SPRAT sets up multi-purpose, optimally usable CARAVAN centres, networked on its exclusive Intranet with a Central Coordination Unit in SPRAT. Each of these centres offers, inter alia, the following facilities:

Vocational Library: Reading room houses general reading and reference books, current newspapers and magazines, specially for commercial and professional advancement for all ages, open usually early morning and late evening. Also lends books and magazines to regular members. Books will continue to be raised by voluntary contributions, thus enlarging CARAVAN ownership.

Coaching Centres: Intensive coaching classes are provided for the crucial SSC [X] and HSC [XII] students, in morning and evening, in association with neighbouring schools. A small fee is charged but CARAVAN ensures support for the needy with local patronage. Through periodical tests and individual monitoring standards will be improved and star performers will be identified. Housing these stars in small exclusive hostels CARAVAN will coach them through graduation and up to PSC examinations.

Vocational Education: Continuing and extended informal education is provided through workshops, plays, group discussions and seminars, to enhance material well being. Existing small businesses will be encouraged towards greater professionalization and technology upgradation even while offering help to promote new micro-economic units with latest low-cost technologies, such as those provided by CSIR labs. Using the vast pool of talented local and visiting faculty CARAVAN will become a veritable fountain of practical knowledge on material welfare.

Facilitation: With its professional manpower and infrastructure, CARAVAN provides valuable administrative and logistics support for allied initiatives by like-minded organizations and other divisions of SPRAT.

Already CARAVAN helps Self Help Groups with their accounting and administrative work. Soon SPRAT will promote AZMAT [micro-economic units, specially for women] and BASERA [child care centres for the children of mothers working in AZMAT centres] in due course. SHIRKAT self help groups not only provide an impetus to savings propensity but also provide the initial seed capital to the poorest of the poor.

Besides, by monitoring individual performance at CARAVAN workshops, specific interest groups will be formed and entrusted to the existing voluntary agencies - or to the Projects Division of SPRAT - for technical training, economic and techno-managerial support.

Adult Literacy Units: With technical help from Gujarat Vidyapiath -the university founded by Mahatma Gandhi - CARAVAN organizes adult literacy classes, specially for women. Within three months unlettered women acquire education equivalent to 3rd standard in school. Gujarat Vidyapith set up by Mahatma Gandhi supports us in this. In due course help will be provided for taking the Xth examination directly.

Information Kiosk: This is the inquiry counter for all temporal information. Circulars, brochures and other useful material concerning schemes of scholarships, grants and subsidies, soft credit etc introduced by the govt and other help agencies, will be compiled in the vernacular and supplied. Also adequate help will be extended in filling in, submitting and monitoring the progress of required forms and returns. Counselling on careers, vocations, health etc. will be offered. By and by a veritable goldmine of everyday information will be compiled on the Intranet and selectively offered.

Video Theatre: To widen the world view, enhance self confidence and to provide some entertainment, video films on cassettes and CDs - such as the programmes of Discovery and National Geographic, as also of the CSIR, DECU/SAC, UGC, Jamia Millia, country promotion films from various national embassies, and educational films of the various affiliates of the UN etc - are screened everyday at CARAVAN. The same equipment is also used for faculty presentations.

Data collection: Utilizing the infrastructure and local goodwill CARAVAN proposes to collect and collate multipurpose data about various segments of the local community. The various CARAVANs will be linked up with the centralized database for instant point-to-point access, as well as across the Web.

This database can grow to serve various uses such as an employment exchange, a virtual market, or simply for organizing empowered groups etc. Besides, this data will be utilized for conducting extensive demographic and other socio-economic studies.

Meeting Hall: In free time, the furnished hall can be rented out for secular deliberations and professional engagements complimenting CARAVAN ’s objectives, for a fee.

APPROACH

CARAVAN centres will largely act as facilitating and enabling institutions striving to achieve synergy in voluntary work. Rather than meting out temporary livelihoods on a platter, these centres will function more as permanent local capacity building institutions, using and coordinating existing support structures. CARAVAN will considerably count upon local resources and produce substantial results merely by efficient coordination. Instead of duplicate something that may already be afoot in the chosen area, CARAVAN will link-up and support it. It will offer CARAVAN platform for like-minded NGOs if their work compliments CARAVAN objectives. Besides, CARAVAN will regularly launch satellite projects, social campaigns etc. as illustrated below:

Illustrative Satellite Projects: Setting up rudimentary badminton-cum-volley ball courts, children’s recreation facilities with sand-pits, promoting self-help groups, setting up AZMAT and BASERA centres, promoting public baths / toilets etc.

Illustrative Campaigns: With the involvement of local leadership promoting various social campaigns such as proper parking, covered drainage, covered food item vending, vaccination, vacation education, plantation etc.

CARAVAN  CENTRAL COORDINATION CELL

At the hub of CARAVAN network lies the CARAVAN Central Coordination Cell at SPRAT conducting necessary facilitation, co-ordination and monitoring. This Cell, a part of SPRAT administrative office, will maintain the Intranet, procure and supply library books and reference material, arrange faculty, conduct research and publish useful material, adapt published material in the vernacular, establish tie-ups and exchange deals, monitor centre / staff performance, conduct internal audit and other statutory supervision, and liaise with other SPRAT divisions, government and external agencies.

SPRAT needs serious funding and logistics support to strengthen this nerve centre of the CARAVAN network.

COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP

SPRAT endeavours to mobilize local resources for the start-up infrastructure to the extent possible to enhance community ownership. A Local Advisory Board [LAB] largely comprising local talent and influence monitors the professionals and advises each centre.  Besides, the centres actively involve the local social and religious leadership, influential citizens and activists with various programmes at different times to benefit from their insights, as well as to enlarge ownership feeling.

The central policies are formulated and the performance of the various centres is monitored by a Central Advisory Board [CAB] comprising nationally renowned experts.
Besides the BoG, CAB, LABs we receive technical support from the faculty of IIMA, NID, EDI and scientists of CSIR and its other labs.

CURRENT STATUS

One CARAVAN centre – inaugurated by the city mayor – is functioning at Vatwa, Ahmedabad. The second one has started functioning at Himmatnagar since 27th April, 03
Another one in the city is coming up at Shah-e-Alam, near the erstwhile famous relief camp.

Premises have already been taken with rent-free [gift] lease duly executed, at Mehsana and Surat where renovation is under way. Offers have been received from Bharuch, Mehemdabad, Baroda, Vankaner and Nadiad but agreements are yet to be signed.

Local Advisory Boards [LABs] have already been set up at Vatwa, Mehsana, Himmatnagar and Surat with the first line professional staff in place.

Work at these centres is moving very slowly due to paucity of resources. In absence of a regular funding arrangement SPRAT mobilizes the required resources by voluntary contributions from private philanthropists, which obviously takes time. Charity, in India, comes faster for the sake of sawab and slower in the name of compassion!

[Alone I had set out towards the goal - A CARAVAN was formed as friends started joining]

B: AZMAT:

A center for the poor and lower middle class men and women to engage in productive activities in SPRAT-promoted micro economic enterprises. These projects will be born out of participants’ interest at CARAVAN workshops but will be promoted, supported and monitored by the project wing of SPRAT.

The centers will typically harness local skills, use locally available raw materials and will either have local markets or access a pooled market at a distance. Typically each AZMAT center should provide sustainable and enduring livelihood to about 30 women, earning a daily wage of around Rs. 50/- for up to six hour work a day.

Institutions like the CSIR will provide low cost technology inputs while design support can come from the NID and management inputs from the EDI and IIMA.

The typical average cost for setting up one AZMAT center inclusive of machinery and one cycle of raw material etc. should be around Rs. 1,00,000/-.

C: BASERA:

A childcare and education center located near one or more AZMAT centers to take care of the wards of women working at the AZMAT centres. Besides rudimentary play facilities like a sand pit, slides, swings, educational games and basic nursery/primary education these children will be provided one wholesome mid-day meal.

BASERA centers will be located in close proximity of AZMAT centers and will be working in sync with them. BASERA will be managed by a foster mother who will be reimbursed all her costs. Typically a BASERA center should have around 30 children and must cost around Rs. 1,00,000/- per annum.

D: SHIRKAT [Savings and Credit Groups] :

For the poorest of the poor CARAVAN supports in the formation of small savings and credit self-help groups. The members contribute at least Rs. 5/- per day per head. When the corpus reaches Rs. 5,000/- SPRAT contributes a like amount which the members will loan to the needy member. And thus the corpus grows and the member’s access to the credit expands.

The entire administrative, cash and accounting support is provided by CARAVAN while the members manage their affairs themselves within the broad policy framework provided by SHIRKAT.

NGO: Society for Promotion of Rational Thinking (SPRAT) <info@mysprat.org>
Program name: Empowering the Impoverished  Location: Ahmedabad, Mahesana, Himmatnagar, Vadodara cities of Gujarat
Contact: Sudha Pandey, Hassan Jowher <{info,mhj}@mysprat.org>
Visited by: Nigamanth Sridhar <nigamanth@aidindia.org>

About the group
The Society for Promotion of Rational Thinking (SPRAT) officially <b>started
functioning as an organization immediately after the communal riots </b> rocked the state
of Gujarat in Feb – Mar 2002. The primary objectives of the group are two-fold. The
first is to correct the perception in people of both Hindu and Muslim communities, by
promoting rational thinking rather than religious sentiments. The other is to provide
support and empower the poor and marginalized communities.

(Note: So it was PLANNED long before the riots? )

The main idea behind SPRAT’s work is the recognition that the Hindu and Muslim
communities have been intentionally kept apart by political and social forces from
within both religions. In order to fix this situation, SPRAT aims to create alternative
linkages between the communities so that some amount of dialogue is possible
between the Hindu and Muslim people. To this end, Mr. Jowher, being a Muslim
himself, talks with people of the Muslim faith. These meetings, called Nai Subah
meetings are targeted at Muslims of all age groups, especially 20-40. He sits in front of
them, and talks to them in Urdu, full with quotes from the Quran, and asks them to
introspect a little and think about why the Hindus hate them so much. He asks them
simple, yet difficult questions such as "Why do you cheer when Pakistan wins a
cricket match against India?" He patiently explains to them that it is acts like these –
simple day-to-day acts that fuel hatred against Muslims among the Hindus; that they
should stop doing these things, and recognize and honor the reality that they are
INDIAN Muslims.

(Note: See above newsletter re: "standing in line at hospitals run by <b>KAFIRS</b> )

So far the response to these meetings have been mixed. Older people are generally not
very supportive of the idea, and the youth are not very happy at being told the truth
either. The people in the age group of 30-40 are, however, in support of the idea that
dialogue is essential between Hindus and Muslims.

About CARAVAN
The CARAVAN centers that SPRAT is running are another effort aimed at rebuilding
these broken community linkages. As they have been described in the proposal and
the answers, these centers are intended to be learning and discussion centers. ...
..The centers also have a library and a reading room. <b>The library is well-stocked with
books in English, Gujarati and Hindi. The books are mostly non-fiction. </b>

(note: that means, there are a few things there other than the DYFI-approved Thoughts of Chairman Mao, the Communalism Combat Teesta/Sabrang magazine, and the Sabrang/FOIL Report co-authored by Angana Cheaterji, Biju Mathew, Shalini Gera etc.)

There is also  an adjoining reading room that the visitors to the CARAVAN can use. The reading
room also serves the purpose of a discussion center. There is a notice board in the
reading room which is kept current with job postings, and other
advertisements/articles of interest to the youth that frequent the CARAVAN.

Currently there are three operational CARAVAN centers – Vatwa (Ahmedabad),
Mahesana, and Himmatnagar. There is one more in Shah-e-Alam (Ahmedabad)
which is ready, but cannot be started due to lack of funds. I visited the Vatwa and
Shah-e-Alam centers.

Assessment
The group is certainly a fine one. The staff is committed and they have a vision that
they are working toward. I was especially impressed by the idea of the Nai Subah
meetings. They hold a lot of promise. The CARAVAN centers certainly have the
potential to be very useful, but as of now, the only drawback I see is that they are
located deep inside Muslim-dominated areas. <b>The possibility of Hindu people
participating in the CARAVAN programs is a little far out right now.</b> Even so, the
centers are a very useful program in the overall picture. <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It will be a good idea to send a mass mail to these organizations telling them how funding AID is against the US tax code. I think someone should do it. I think I could, but have not found the time in a long while.

While the expenditure on education was decreasing, the literacy mission was promoted by the ruling classes as a cheaper alternative. Such an activity was envisaged to be conducted through non-governmental organisations and <b>many of our science movement organisations participated in this programme. Dear Friends,

As you know a huge earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck <b>Muzaffarabad region of
Pakistan</b> on 8th October. This earthquake is bigger than the Gujarat
earthquake. A large part of Pakistan and Kashmir was badly affected. <b>800
people in Kashmir </b>are dead and more than 2400 are injured. <b>Pakistan has
suffered a major loss of life - more than 40000 people have died</b>. Indian
