Witch Hunt By UPA - Defence Deal

CBI: A ruling party poodle

QUOTEIndia might well be on its way to becoming a modern nation with a fast
growing economy but its politicians sure remain firmly rooted in medieval ages.

Vendettas, revenge, grudge matches, et al form the staple of its politics. For
proof do not go far. Witness how the Congress Party-led Government of
Manmohan Singh pursues the former Defence Minister George Fernandes.

Since the former Socialist stormy petrel has been one of the most bitter,
and uncompromising, critics of the Nehru-Gandhi family, the latter has its own
reasons to show him down. Since he has most assiduously exposed the
wrong-doing and corruption of the Family, it causes little surprise that the
latter wants to pay him back in the same coin.

Barak case: Fernandes accuses PMQUOTEUpset over Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s comment on him on the Barak missiles deal issue, NDA Convenor George Fernandes has shot off a letter to him accusing him of being a “silent spectator” to the “misuse” of CBI in the case.

He was referring to the PM’s reported remark, “I have no other expectation from him (Fernandes), in response to a media query during his recent foreign trip, about the JD(U) leader’s attempt to involve President APJ Abdul Kalam in the controversy.

Sunday , March 09, 2008 at 05:10:29

Mumbai, March 9: Arms dealer Suresh Nanda, his son and two others were sent on a transit remand to Delhi by a court here for allegedly entering into a conspiracy to "favour" the businessman.

The CBI produced them before Additional Sessions Judge C H Mali and asked for their transit remand to the national capital where the agency would seek their custodial remand for questioning.

The entire conduct of accused persons is "suspicious" and points out that they were entering into a conspiracy to "favour" Suresh Nanda, the court said in its order while directing the CBI to produce the four before a designated court in Delhi within 48 hours.

The counsel for chartered accountant Bipin Shah argued before the court that he was only a professional and had never engaged in any tax evasion.

Deputy Director of Income Tax Ashutosh Verma took the plea that he had prepared a report which was against the interest of Nandas. However, he could not justify his presence at a hotel room here along with the arms dealer last night when the four were arrested.

Surprisingly, the lawyer of Nanda made no argument before the court.

It was his son Sanjeev Nanda who was the accused in the BMW hit and run case.

First he was acquitted by the courts for lack of evidence but now there is a re-trial going on since new evidence in the form of an eye-witness has come forward to depose before the court.
