Hang Afzal? 'Secular' concerns

No, no. Everyone is wrong. Poor terrorist Afzal, he's a minority. Don't you know how special and precious they are? If you hang him, his minority will become even smaller! And that would be unsecular and communalist and hindutva and evil and against religious freedom. What matters it what poor innocent terrorist-murderer Afzal did? As he's of a minority religion (other than Jainism, Zoroastrianism,... which don't count), he shouldn't be held accountable for such actions.
We must appease secularism (that will solve all our problems!) by punishing the relatives of Afzal's victims instead. See, that is how we prevent future terrorism: by protecting terrorists in the present.

Hang Afzal. Or if humanitarian groups will whine about it, put him to sleep with a lethal injection. Either way, get rid of him. Pardees with 72 houris awaits the brave terrorist shaheed-to-be. We mustn't keep him from it, Allah will be displeased. Those Islamic groups protesting his hanging are showing very little faith in the mighty, merciful (al-rehman) Allah. Feed Afzal to the non-existent demiurge of Islam!

(By the way, Graham Staines isn't German but an Aussie missionary, n'est-ce pas? That piece of info can't be hard to come by, as even I know it. My, how knowledgeable the 'All India Committee Against Death Penalty' is.)

There was a huge expression of Dhimmitude when death sentence to Afzal was pronounced. Arundhathi Roy had a 16 page crap in Outlook recently. And her affilated association Society for the Protection of Detainees' and Prisoners' Rights (SPDPR) made street sit-in demonstrations and online and offline campaigns against death sentence, as if some innocent member of minority community was targeted by "Fascist Commnal Phorces"!.

Santosh singh the killer of Priyadarshani mattoo is awarded the death penalty. There seems to be a thundering silence from these so called "liberal" people who cannot accept "india shining" but want death sentence to be abolished like in egalitarian europe.

As of now, there seems to be no move against this death sentence by the likes of Roy. Shall we ask, Is that a concerted effort to pull a conspiracy of silence and let die Santhosh singh ?

No doubt the killer should be hanged. India has a death penalty as a punishment. And the judges have the right to award such sentence. How humane the death sentence is, can be questioned and debated. But, for this debate to have any meaning, Arundhathi roy and the likes of her should first be thrown out.

In my way Afzal should b hanged , bcoz in if this is done then the other parties of

crime will b have a point in their mind that the punish of such a serious crime is

Death , But on the other hand for Kashmiris Afzal is like a guru.

Then wat can b result .

What do you mean "what should be done" ? The court has already made it's verdict clear. Is your suggestion of hanging him entirely new and original? Or is it just an agreement with the Supreme Court's verdict.

Emboldened by the vocal support of the so-called secular lobby and showing no remorse for the ghastly act done by him, Mohammed Afzal, sentenced to death for his role in the 2001 Parliament terror attack, has finally petitioned President APJ Abdul Kalam for mercy.

prison authorities will forward Afzal has submitted a 102-page long mercy petition including 75 pages of annexures to the authorities of Tihar Jail. The the petition to the President, sources said.

The former JKLF militant had so far refused to file a clemency petition citing that he had no hope of getting justice while his family had approached the first citizen seeking mercy for him.

In his plea, Afzal said he was moved by the "solidarity" he has received from the people cutting across ideological divides apart from the support he got from Jammu and Kashmir. "This support has truly given me a new hope that I may still live and be able to see my son grow up," he is reported to have said in his plea. Afzal said he was also moved by how "graciously the President received his wife, son and mother when they met him," adding further that "It kindled a new hope that I may still get justice".


Yes killing others who will never see their son grow or daughters get married, but this ba$tard want to see his son grow into terrorist.

UPA government soft on handling terrorism: Vajpayee QUOTENew Delhi, Nov 22: Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Wednesday said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's days are numbered if it did not change its soft approach on handling terrorism.

Addressing a massive Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally near Jantar Mantar here, the veteran leader said the government did not have a clear policy on internal security, terrorism and India-Pakistan relations.

"The ministers in this government speak in different voices on such crucial issues indicating confusion in the government ranks.

"If this government is not going to change its ways, people will change this government," he said.

Vajpayee, along with L K Advani, BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior party leader Murli Manohar Joshi slammed the UPA government for the delay in the execution of the death sentence to Mohammad Afzal, convicted in the 2001 parliament attack case.

"We are going to ask the UPA government in parliament why there is a delay in disposing of Afzal's clemency petition. In case of clemency petitions, the cabinet has to take a final decision. Why the cabinet is not taking any decision?" Vajpayee asked.

Afzal had earlier this month filed a mercy petition before President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam seeking pardon of his death sentence.

Rajnath Singh said the party would continue its agitation to press for an early execution of Afzal.

Earlier in the day, Advani and Rajnath Singh led two separate processions of BJP workers from Rajghat and Birla Mandir respectively, culminating at Jantar Mantar near Parliament.

Modi lashes at Centre for "sitting" on Afzal's mercy plea QUOTENagpur:Charging the Centre with going soft on terrorism, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tonight asked the government to explain why it was "sitting" on the mercy petition of Afzal Guru convicted in Parliament attack case.

"Why the UPA government is sitting on mercy petition filed by his (Afzal Guru)family which the President has referred to the cabinet"? Modi said while addressing an anti-terrorism rally of BJP at Chitnis Park Stadium in eastern part of the city.

Modi said it was unfortunate that some prominent Muslim leaders were "warning" the government of repercussions in case Afzal Guru was hanged.

He recalled that killers of retired Army Chief General Arunkumar Vaidya were hanged after the union cabinet rejected the mercy plea within eleven hours of the President's sending it to the cabinet.

Modi also accused the government of indulging in appeasement of Muslims.Muslim headcount in military, changing structure of Aligarh Muslim University and scrapping of POTA are some of decisions to appease muslims, Modi alleged.

The Government has scrapped POTA which was meant to tackle terrorism with iron hand and surprisingly the government decision was by and large welcomed by people in Pakistan who burst crackers and distributed sweets. "Is it not the government's failure?"

Modi dubbed Congress as "B-team" of Muslim League and said "if you look at the demands of Muslim League during pre-independence era, Congress was functioning on the same lines and it is bent upon dividing the country once again on the lines of religion."

Modi dared the UPA government to bring religion-based reservations.He said that in the Constituent Assembly there was none from VHP, Bajrang Dal but the patriotic members vehemently opposed reservation on basis of religion.

Touching the issue of farmers suicide in Maharashtra, Modi said his government has introduced a Soil Health Card and directed about 750 agriculture scientists to leave their laboratories and work in the field.

"Why can't Vilasrao Deshmukh government initiate identical measures to check suicide by farmers in Maharashtra?" he said.

Elder brother Aijaz denounces him on camera

Amid the pleas for clemency on behalf of Parliament attack accused and death row convict Afzal Guru, his elder brother, Aijaz in a sensational disclosure claimed that Afzal was a terrorist linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, according to a CNN-IBN special investigative report.

The news channel has claimed that the entire truth in the Parliament attack case never reached the courts or the public, and that both Afzal and the police were 'dishonest'. The police never presented Aijaz as a witness.Â Â

Aijaz has also claimed on camera that Afzal never surrendered. "I surrendered his weapon to the STF. Nobody knows this," he stated.

The CNN-IBN investigation revealed that the J&K Special Task Force had intelligence that Afzal Guru was a conduit for Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Ghazi Baba. Despite knowing this, the STF admitted it did not keep track of Afzal after releasing him in 2000.

Admitting this, DSP, Police Control Room, Jammu and Kashmir said: "Once Afzal was released, nobody kept a track of what he's up to. Soon after his release, he was involved in the Parliament attack case."

Aijaz told the channel that, "The decision of the Supreme Court is right. I swear to God the truth is that Afzal was working for Jaish-e Mohammad. He was involved in the attack." 
Aijaz's admission is a big blow to the clemency-seekers who have claimed that investigating agencies and police fabricated evidence to prove Afzal's involvement in the Parliament attack.

The news channel's probe also revealed a vital information that had never surfaced in the courts: That Afzal's younger brother, Hilaal was arrested along with Afzal. Hilaal told the channel that contrary to police claims, no recoveries were made from them.

Hilaal, the only eyewitness against the police version, was never produced in Afzal's defense. This supported the claims of those campaigning for Afzal's clemency that he did not have a competent lawyer in the trial court.

While Aijaz has denied that Afzal surrendered before the police, Afzal's wife Tabassum said she did have a surrender certificate but lawyers in the Sessions Court had lost it.

But contradicting Tabassum's claims, SM Sahai, Inspector General, J&K Police says, "We have a record of the surrendered and I've not seen any claim being made that Afzal surrendered."

The Supreme Court accepted that Afzal was a surrendered militant. The J&K Police say no. But the prosecution never used this against Afzal in his trial. Both Afzal and the police concealed this vital fact.

IG SM Sahai says, "As per our investigation, this man was believed to have links with Ghazi Baba but we never got anything concrete against him so he was not detained or prosecuted."

The channel claimed that in June 2000, Afzal was picked up and tortured by then Superintendent of Police, STF, Dravinder Singh. "Yes, I tortured him. We were informed that he could lead us to Ghazi Baba. His brother Aijaz said they'd help us capture Ghazi Baba," Singh said.

The channel claimed that Aijaz promised to tip-off the STF about Ghazi Baba's whereabouts as a trade off for Afzal. Four years later in 2004, Ghazi Baba was killed in an encounter and Aijaz helped the STF identify him.

Ironically, despite knowing that Afzal was in regular touch with Ghazi Baba, the STF did not mount continuous surveillance on him. And a year later, Afzal became an accused in the terrorist strike on Parliament.

Dravinder Singh admitted that had the STF kept him under continuous surveillance - the attack on Parliament could have been prevented!

The channel pointed out that in 2000, J&K STF identified Afzal as a Jaish-e-Mohammad operative, but the STF did not testify the same during Afzal's trial in court.

The Supreme Court had said in its judgement that there was no evidence of Afzal being a member of a terrorist organisation. None of the 80 prosecution witnesses ever alleged that Afzal was in any way associated or belonged to any terrorist organisation.

In his letters, Afzal alleged that the Delhi Police fabricated evidence against him. The contents of the letter, however, never came up in the trial.

[size=7]It is also clear that the security forces and investigating agencies have concealed information during Afzal's trial. There was mystery surrounding the existence of an alleged Jaish-e-Mohammad operative Tariq, who supposedly introduced Afzal to Mohammad. According to the Delhi Police, the two subsequently planned the attack. But the J&K STF denied there was anybody by the name of Tariq in their records.

Amid all the controversies, one fact has never been disputed either by Afzal in his letters, or by those campaigning for his clemency, or by the police in Delhi and J&K that Afzal did bring Mohammad from Srinagar to Delhi. Mohammad was the terrorist killed in the Parliament attack. Yet, in this statement recorded in the trial court under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Afzal claimed he never identified the body of Mohammad.

Delhi's commentariat, or chattering classes if you wish, must have received a rude shock when informed, courtesy an investigative report telecast by CNN-IBN, that Mohammed Afzal Guru was indeed a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist. Had this fact been asserted by the police or any other Government agency, it would have been met with scorn and disdain. After all, those campaigning for the condemned terrorist to be spared the noose have shown scant regard and lesser respect for the country's judiciary, including the Supreme Court, claiming that Afzal Guru did not get a fair trial, which, of course, is nothing but outright calumny disguised as freedom of speech. But now that his elder brother, Aijaz, has admitted on camera that Afzal Guru was not only a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist but was also working for Ghazi Baba, who organised terror attacks within and outside Jammu & Kashmir and was put down by security forces in 2004, our lib-left intelligentsia, which abhors the very concept of national interest, will find it difficult to portray him as an "innocent victim" of a "demonic state" where, to quote writer-turned-activist promoting fashionable causes, Arundhati Roy, "democracy does not exist". It is also revealing that the defence - and it merits reiteration that Afzal Guru, contrary to gross misrepresentation of the truth by members of his fan club, was defended in court by lawyers - did not bother to produce his younger brother, Hilal, who has a different take on events, as a witness. It would, therefore, be in order to suggest that the absurd demand for clemency is not only misplaced but deserves to be rejected without any compunction.

Having said that, we also need to look at some other aspects of the investigative report which show the intelligence and security agencies operating in Jammu & Kashmir in poor light and raise important questions which need to be answered by authority unless it prefers to remain indifferent about the need to plug loopholes in the existing system that enable terrorists like Afzal Guru to strike high profile targets with amazing impunity. It has now emerged that security forces and intelligence agencies allowed Afzal Guru freeplay for all of 2000 and 2001 to plan and execute the attack on Parliament House. During this time, he was in regular touch with Ghazi Baba and there was enough evidence to restrain him from proceeding further with the crime for which he has now been sentenced to death. Those charged with conducting counter-terrorism operations, for some inexplicable reason, failed to piece together enough intelligence input to nail Afzal Guru before he and his fellow terrorists involved in the attack on Parliament House almost succeeded in their evil enterprise. This cannot be brushed aside as an oversight: The man's background and his associations demanded that his movements be tracked; yet, this simple principle of counter-terrorism was followed in the breach. Three questions arise from this disclosure. First, whose decision was it not to track Afzal Guru? Second, has responsibility been fixed for this abysmal lapse? Third, what steps have been taken to ensure that this does not happen again? The answers, if any, would be available with the Union Home Ministry. Tragically, managing internal security is no longer the core competence of the Home Ministry under its current political management.

Ms Karat held her head to show her disgust when she heard Jethmalani.Â

Rana put his signature on a large board reading "Afzal ko Phansi Honi Chahiye (Afzal should be hanged)" as part of an All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) campaign for the execution of the death-row prisoner, whose clemency petition is pending with the President.

He honoured the families of the security personnel who were killed in the attack five years ago with bravery awards instituted by the AIATF

Anguished families of Parliament attack victims are all set to make a fervent plea for justice to the President of India on the fifth anniversary of the ghastly incident.

A day after threatening to return the medals, December 13, 2001 victims' families are congregating at the India Gate on Wednesday to protest against the failure of the Government to take a decision on hanging of Mohammad Afzal, the prime accused in the case, which had rocked the nation.Â Â

They would also surrender the medals. "We will march to the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Wednesday morning and if the President declines to meet us then all the widows and family members of the martyrs will march towards India Gate. 

"Around noon, we'll keep the medals and awards with full honour at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. We are not indifferent to the medals but are distressed at the indifferent attitude of the Government. They laid their lives for the nation and all we want from the Government is to consider their sacrifices. Hang Afzal," said Ganga Devi, widow of ASI Nanak Chand of Delhi Police, who died in the attack on December 13, 2001.

Family members of nine security personnel and one photo-journalist who lost their lives while on duty in Parliament precincts have the backing of several organisations, including former director of Intelligence Bureau Ajit K Doval, and MS Bitta, chairman of Anti-Terrorist Front. 

"Afzal is getting a lot of support from various organisations who are trying to save him from the gallows but we would not let this happen," said Bitta.

The families also alleged that the matter was being delayed unnecessarily by the ministry. Even Jaspal Rana, who has just brought laurels to the nation, has put his signatures on a large board reading "Afzal ko phansi honi chahiye (Afzal should be hanged)" as part of an AIATF campaign for the execution of the death-row prisoner, whose clemency petition is pending with the President.Â
