India Forum Journal
#1
I would like to use this thread to solicit your views on how we can accomplish our goals of propagating positive views and educating people about India.

Fellow forum members, I believe that one of better ways to make our voices heard is by publishing our thoughts as a monthly magazine in a coherant, well organized and professional manner.

These are my thoughts. I encourage you to comment and make any suggestions.

The magazine will have following sections:

1) Front Page

2) Table of Contents

3) Editorial (an executive summary of the issues covered by the articles)

4) Articles (about 4 to 8)

In section 4, we will have one article as a monthly executive summary (hopefully humorous) of happenings in our forum.

In the first issue or so, I suggest we stick to 2-3 book reviews and one or two historical perspectives about India (which seems to be our forte currently).

If you need to contact me personally, please email me at o_vijay at yahoo.com

Either my first post is perfectly acceptable to everyone or is there no interest in the e-magazine?

Just to get our creative juices flowing, how about a naming contest for the e-magazine?

I obviously like India Forum Journal but I would prefer if its something more Indian like India Jana Patrika. What do you think?

Not sure if there are enough members to procede and contribute continual articles for a monthly magazine YET! Too much dedication and many just don't have the time. The forum seems to have achieved a critical mass for take off....a number of interesting threads...replies have popped up. As time passes and more members join and reply....these threads should be the priority for archival. As it grows so will our voice be heard and they'll be a vast swath of members who have some time off to collate whats in the threads into articles....but im sure many of these ideas will crop up again.

O Vijay,

IMO it's not that people don't like the idea, as a matter of fact it is a great idea and a noble way for NRI folks, like us, outside the country to do something rather being just Armchair Generals.

Give it some time, as more people join in more ideas will flow and there would be quiet some folks who would be willing to put some time / effort into this.

The idea needs time to actualize. I propose we start with a quarterly and then work ourselves up. It is a tremendous amount of time that is needed. But it can be very satisfying when it materializes. I will be out of town starting mid november and until the first week of december. so i cannot undertake anything before then

Thanks for the feedback, Praneet, Krishna and Kaushal. If anybody is interested in being the editor, please e-mail me. I just want to get the ball rolling whether its monthly, quarterly or even semi-annually. <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thanks.

Is it possible that I create the front covers?

Please check some of my work at

Gill the covers are quite good. <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />
#9
Hmmm, I particularly like Mushy giving the black power salute.
#10
Name the journal 'Shashvatam' or 'Shashvat'.
#11
Great work Gill, heres me nominating Gill for a design for cover page for India Forum Itself! :cool
#12
Jaspreet, thanks for the suggestion. Can you explain the meaning behind these words?
#13
Vijay,

It means permanent. I suggested it as a reference to India. You can project any sort of permanence to India that you see fit, I was referring to the enduring culture of last thousands of years. Did I make sense?
#14
Jaspreet, I like the word Shashvatam. Even though I don't know much about Sanskrit, it sounds cool! <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

But lemme throw in some of own:

  • The India

  • India Forever

  • The rise of India

PS. Will add more, later! <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />
#15
shaashvatam means eternal

for instance Arjuna addresses Bhagavan(B.G.10.12)

Arjuna addresses Krishna as "param` brahma param` dhAma,

pavitram` paramam` bhavAn, puruSham` shAShvatam` divyam, Adi-devam

ajam` vibhum" :

You are the Supreme Brahman, the supreme shelter, the supreme purifier, the Eternal, Divine Purusha, the Primeval Deity, the Unborn, the Omnipresent (10.12)

Good choice :cool

Jaspreet and Kaushal, thanks. I learn new things every day!

Krishna, your suggestions are cool too. I like "India Forever Journal", kinda goes with our forum name.

Regarding naming the Journal "Shashvatam", how should the word be incorporated into the name of the journal?

1) "Bharat Shashvatam Patrika" or

2) "Shashvatam" or

3) something else?

This is a good idea.

Cover story. Followed by key events of the week. followed by state stories [dominant ones].

article on sports. article on a personality, article of a film icon.

International news item pretaining to India or just big news. cartoon page for kids, receipe page for women. And boom you have it.

Front page Cover dont worry, Ill take caare of graphics.

i think we should run a trial "Keep news items handy for the week of Dec14th 2003.

Cover Story: 32 years after Dacca. [All articles on 1971 war and India today]. I'll work on the cover.

Goodluck
Jai Hind.
