As far as the elections are concerned, congress is not even in the game in this region. The loser really is BSP, whose votes will be split between BJP and SP. In my reading of events, however, it is a much larger design than just upcoming elections.
Bharatvarsh, I tried to find some authentic resource on demographics, but could not. So I will have to go by my guesstimate based upon what I see on the ground. Muslim population in city and town areas of Gorakhpur region would be about 20-25% and in rural about 10-15%, but it is fast growing. Only the other day I was checking the village records of my village which is in the deep interiors, and virtually untouched by Islamism so far. (check this site : http://bhulekh.up.nic.in/ - here one can see all land records of all villages of UP. Great resource.) My father and I were surprised to find that so many land portions of our village are now cultivated by muslims. So muslims are growing in rural areas too. (Government can allot land portions it controls, to anyone, like dried pond land and other cutivable areas. And we know who Mulayam will allot lands to, for votes). On the other hand there is a continuous outbound migration of Hindus to other areas like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab etc, for better employments and opportunities. Therefore, the population mix is fast changing.
But demographics of region is a bit different and must be understood in a different context. Hindus are fairly united here. So far, not much "caste division" or Dalit politics, despite presence of large dalit population, this is reflected in relatively poor showing of SP and BSP. Kshatriyas, OBCs and Dalits are particular supporters of Hindutva here. Also understand that the villages of the region, have been a major source of recruitment for Indian Army, since the East India Company days. (Sri Mangal Pandey was from neighbouring Balia). This continues today too. Young men serve in Army and then come back to settle down in their villages. So simple plain villagers of the region are very aware of what is going on in the world, are well connected, and even are a bit militantic. Dont give two hoots to what outside word calls 'law and order'. And in mid of all this, Goraksh Math, either by design or by default, has become the symbol of Hindutva here, since the partition days, when the then Mahant used to be a strong hardliner Hindu-protector, a horse-riding Sannyasi.
During and after partition, the Hindu leaders of the region had supported and promoted accommodating the inbound migrating Hindus coming in from Sindh and Punjab in the city, even in the heart of muslim dominated areas. Even today, there is a large population of Sindhis in Gorakhpur, who are very strong Hindutva supporters too. This population has always been a catalyst for local Hindu sentiments. In the Nepal side of the border, which is known as Tarai, traditionally there has been very strong pro-Hindu feeling, and Maoists could never really enter this belt.
With this in mind, let us understand the larger design. One must read the document which Mudyji had provide to understand the larger perspective here. That really lays bare the overall gameplan in communists' own words.
Second factor. This region falls in the heart of the proposed mughalistan. Somehow or the other, region has so far avoided islamization and maoisation. No Maoisation, No dalit politics, no missionary activities, no gandhi-nehru brand has so far succeeded here. In fact, the town has been source of strength for Hindutva activities for throughout North India. Saraswati Shishu Mandir movement, and Gita Press - these two should be the best examples of how Gorakhpur has served larger Hindutva. (Gita Press' contribution is very important. It flooded the Hindu scriptures in all Indian languages in the Hindu homes thoughout India). Politically, the region had played a different kind of role. It has supported Hindutva-supporting candidates of any party - not just BJP. In fact, every now and then, Math has even supported non-BJP candidates, and Hindutva-supporting elements here can be found infiltrated into all major parties.
So this area has so far not been "liberated". Communists, missionaries, and above all, Islamists, are really after Hindutva to be crushed in Gorakhpur.
Real trouble had started in 1980s, when ISI had infiltrated throughout Nepal. ISI-supported madarsas have sprung up all over Indo-Nepal border. With this, they are trying to harden the local muslim populations, which have so far been more or less non-confrontational. Demographics is fast changing too as I mentioned.
I think these folks now think that there is a shift in balance, and they are in position to openly challenge this Hindutva fort. Gorakhnath Math is its symbol, so start there. Next there will be land captures etc. (Math controls large areas of endowment lands throughout the region). We shall next find Gita Press and Saraswati Shishu Mandir etc reined in. The overall game plan is to eliminate this as a Hindutva bastion, paving way for Mughalistan. Mullayam is only a tool too. I dont think he can see this, or cares anyways.

Very interesting analysis. Thankyou. I am wondering how the Math is going to build a financial infrastructure around it ? It has to be lucrative and has to involve a lot of people.
On a side note, I have observed that swaminarayan kids who have attended their gurukul schools are extremely devoted to their almamater. Perhaps Math can also do something similar.

Rajeshji, Math hasn't had any financial difficulties so far. Up until 90s, it had royal patronage and protection of Nepal kingdom, which had supported Math financially too. But now that is gone, and Math has to face this organized opposition on its own. Although even now, Math has a lot of endowment properties.
Since Yogi has become the de facto Mahant (and MP), he is trying his best to establish a Gujarat-like model in Gorakhpur, for Math and for people. Like in early Gujarat, he is trying out mass-based co-operative schemes based upon milk economy. This serves his Go-raksha progarm as well. I am not sure how successful he has been in this. But in last 10 years, Purvanchal has seen an increase in Goshalas. Then like Gujarat, this region has a substancial diaspora abroad, in SE Asia, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad etc (Naipaul traces his ancestry from the region). Yogi is trying to utilize diaspora for Math and region too. But unlike Gujarat diaspora, Purvanchal diaspora is neither so committed nor so wealthy. But, overall, as Yogi says, Gujarat and Modi are his models.
Math does run various schools and colleges under the name of Maharana Pratap schools. But scale or quality are not like missionary schools or Swaminarayan schools.

Given the the orientation of the Indian government it is unlikely to help in any way in this direction.

After spending 11 days in jail, Yogi finally arrived at Goraksha Math. Upon arrival, first he went to the Goraksha Temple to have darshan of Guru Gorakhnath, and then went to take blessings of his Guru Mahant Avedyanath. As yogi came face to face with Guru-father, his eyes became tearful with emotions.
Earlier, the news of Yogi's release spread in the city like a wildfire, and large number of people gathered to welcome Yogi. Mandir was echoing with Jai Sri Ram, Har Har Mahadev, and Guru Gorakhsha ki Jay.
Before the arrival of Yogi, the crowds continued to sing Hanuman Chalisa, Vajrang Vaana and Hanuman Ashtaka for about an hour. Women sang Mangal Geets. As the cars in which Yogi arrived reached the temple gates, all discipline broke lose, and people raised loud slogans in support of Yogi for a while. He was greeted by all major leaders of the region at the gates.
Amid all the hustle-bustle, Yogi managed to go to inside the Goraksha Temple of the Math to have darshan of Guru Goraksha. As he entered the temple, Veda Mantras were being sung loudly. Here Yogi was welcomed by the priests by applying Tilak. Then Yogi proceeded to the sitting area of the temple where Pradhan Mahant was already seated with other people. As Yogi and his Guru met, both became emotional, and as he prostrated on the feet of his Guru, his eyes were in tears. Whole atmosphere became heavy with emotions and everyone forgot the slogans, only for a while though.
Earlier, on the way from jail to the Math, people came in crowds to welcome yogi, not caring for the police curfew, and the cars had to stop on every corner for the crowd. Police tried to disallow the gathering, some people went back, but most did not care and followed Yogi till temple.

This follows the news reported by Mudy in post 15.
Jail commissioner Shashibala Srivastava, and after her, Jailer Vimalesh Sankar Mani Tripathi, have both been suspended. Their fault is that they had allowed Yogi and other detainees freedom to do the activities as reported in post 15.
As the news spread, prisoners have gone on hunger strike protesting this suspension.

The order to arrest or release is supposed to be delivered by the SP and DM, as is the protocol when arresting an MP. He thus came to be the priest of the Agam House of Shankaracharya Swami, who was connected with Shankaracharya Matha in Pashupatinath. Madan Bhatta is a decendant of his.
Madan Bhatta informed the news media that among the items of his collection were numerous documents relating to Pashupatinath, copperplates and palm leaves from the time of King Jagajjaya Malla, King Rajendra Bikram Shah Dev's Lalmohar (sacred seal) of Vikram Samvat 1901 (1844 AD), a two-sealed Sanad (decree) of VS 1906 (1849 AD) from the rule of Jung Bahadur Rana (1817-1877 AD), manuscripts concerning the performance of rituals and the holding of festivals, and documents relating to his ancestral authority in the Pashupatinath area. According to the news reports, all these unique items were reduced to ashes.
Fortunately, they are not completely lost, for the Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project (NGMPP) had previously preserved most of them on microfilm. The NGMPP was founded in 1970 under an agreement between His Majesty's Government of Nepal and the German Oriental Society. During 31 years of fruitful activity it managed to microfilm the bulk of Nepal's extraordinary wealth of old manuscripts, block prints and historical documents written in Sanskrit, Newari, Maithili, Nepali, Tibetan or other languages. Thanks to the NGMPP, among the more than 180,000 manuscripts and documents available now on microfilm are the items destroyed in the Agam House.
The NGMPP microfilmed material from Pashupati Gosvara under the code letters PN (Pashupatinatha) from September 11, 1998 to March 31, 2000. The total number of documents microfilmed in the Pashupatinath area is 1,578 (PN 1/1 to PN 37/42). Madan Bhatta was foresighted enough to allow his private collection, consisting of 204 manuscripts and 136 historical documents, to be microfilmed from February 18, 1999 till February 24, 2000. The subjects include: Stotras (71), Tantric Karmakanda (44), General Karmakanda (26), Purana-Mahatmya (24), Jyotisa (7), Ayurveda (7) and Yoga (6), along with two manuscripts in South Indian scripts and 17 miscellaneous items. Especially worthy of note is a multiple text manuscript containing the Purvamnayanitya-karmarcanavidhi, the Daksinamnayapujavidhi and the Pascimamnayapujavidhi, the whole dated NS 827 (1706 AD) and scribed by Sambasadashiva Bhatta himself (PN 27/1). There is also an old palm-leaf manuscript, dated NS 702 (1582 AD), of the Kashikhanda (from the Skandapurana) written in Sanskrit and Newari (PN 22/15), which has recently been mentioned by Madan Bhatta under the title Himavatkhanda.
There are five copperplates (dated NS 821, 851, 863, 877 and 935), 29 palm-leaf and 100 paper documents. The earliest of the palm-leaf documents, a deed of sale, is dated NS 513 (1393 AD). It was microfilmed on reel no. PN 12/35. There is a palm-leaf document issued by Jagajjaya Malla (PN 12/32), and another one, dated NS 594 (1474 AD), issued to Narayan Bhatta Ravata, a priest of Unmatta Bhairava of Pashupati.
The paper documents, including photocopies of earlier ones, fall under categories such as: Lalmohar, Rukka, Tamasuka, Kabolanama, Rajinama, Amsabanda, Bintipatra, Arji, Suchi, Phaisala, Muchulka, Sankalpapatra and Darkhasta. Among the important documents preserved on microfilm are the Lalmohar of VS 1901 (PN 16/1) and the Sanad of VS 1906 (PN 18/42-44).
This is the third time that the work done by the NGMPP has proved to be valuable under such dramatic circumstances. In 1989, a fire at the famous monastery of Tengboche in Khumbu burned the monastery's library to ashes, completely destroying unique manuscripts that had been brought from Tibet. Fortunately again, these rare manuscripts (185 texts, 15,766 folios) had been photographed by the NGMPP just a few months prior to the fire. In the beginning of 2001 the entire village of Prok in Gorkha district was destroyed by fire, only two months after the NGMPP preserved the valuable manuscripts and documents of this village.
The microfilms of all manuscripts and documents are kept both in the National Archives in Kathmandu and in the State Library in Berlin, and are generally accessible to the interested public all over the world. It was the far-sighted German academic community, earnest Nepalese archivists and scholars, and prudent private owners who enabled the NGMPP to save much of Nepal's written tradition from ruin.
The timely preservation of manuscripts and historical documents is one important way to keep the cultural identity and historical assets of Nepal from being lost. For the sake of future generations, misfortunes such as the fires in Tengboche, Prok and Pashupatinath should instigate further efforts to preserve and study Nepal's unique heritage.

Fortunately King Birendra had wisdom of involving Germans, and not Indian government, in the preservation project. Unfortunately, who knows what happens now after the fall of the royalty.
By the way, Goraksha Math in its library has rare collection of manuscripts and ancient literature too. These are out of reach of common public or scholars, and only accessible to faithful and trusted yogis. A retired professor, father of a friend of mine, is a very well studied scholar, and practicing Nath-yogi himself. He has access to the library, and I had once heard about it from him.
