Vaaram Oru Alayam Episode #3 -
Dear friends,
Thanx for your valuable comments on my previous episode. I have tried to incorporate some, and will definitely improve in due course. Today, I have uploaded this weeks âVaaram oru Alayamâ episode-III where in I have narrated elaborately about âSri lakshmi Narasimhar Temple-Parikkalâ.
As soon as we hear the name of Lord Narasimha, the first thing that strikes us is Baktha Prahalad, Hiranyakasipu, and a fearful Avatar with a Lion face and human Body.
Similarly there is another story of Lord Narasimha-in Parikkal, Which I have narrated in this episode.

Tamil Podcast #6 Vaaram Oru Alayam- Sri Vellai Vinayagar Alayam Thiruvalanchuzhi
Sri Swetha vinayagar/Nurai pillayar
Duration 8m 46s

This weekâs Podcast is about âSri Vellai Vinayagar Alayam â Thiruvalanchuzhi. This temple is best approached via Swamimalai, which is about 15 km from Kumbakonam. Swamimalai is well known in the area as one of the Arupadai Veedus of Lord Muruga. Swamimalai to Thiruvalanchuzhi is another five kilometres.
Sweta Vinayakar (Vellai Vinayakar or Nuraippillaiyaar): A white colored image of Ganapati - Sweta Vinayakar is the center of worship here. Legend has it that the Gods (the Devas) fashioned this image out of the foam that was generated when the milky ocean (Ksheera Samudram) was churned by them, in their quest for the celestial nectar Amritam.
As famous as the temple were the circular pillars with the gopuram motifs repeated on them. Crossing another gateway embellished with stucco figures one reaches the shrine of Valanchuzhinathar or Kapardaneswarar. The prakaram ceiling also had geometrical designs, which have been eroded. An intriguing, unfinished (badly damaged?) composition was a pictorial representation of the various important Siva temples on either bank of the Cauvery. The artist had even mentioned the names of the temples!
Sambandar (Circa AD 600-700) also sings of the beauty of the temple: "Thiruvalanchuzhi has groves where, the fragrance of the blossoms, compete with the humming of the bees. Thirunavukkarasar has sung two songs on the Lord here extolling his acts of heroism and beauty. Arunagirinathar also sings of the Murugan in this temple.

This weekâs Podcast is about âSri Garbarakshaambigai sametha Mullaivananathar Thirukovil,Thirukkarugavur. This temple is situated on the banks of the river Vettaar. Can be reached from both Thanjavoor and Kumbakoenam . From Thanjavoor and Kumbakonam town buses are available . A small village situated on Papanasam - Chaaliyamangalam road . Papanasam is on Thanjavoor - Kumbakonam road. There is a main rajagopuram on the east and the temple has also got an entrance on the south side. Both the shrines of Lord Mullaivana Nathar and Goddess Garbha Ratchaambikai are situated in the main outer prakaram facing the east direction.
The sivalingam in the main sanctum of this temple is a Swayambu Lingam, one out of the 64 in the world. This Lingam is made up of ant hill mud. Hence there is no water abhishekam for this Lord. Instead, the Lingam is merely pasted with a kind of must called "Punuhu" in tamil. People who are afflicted with incurable diseases come to this temple, offer "Punuhu Chattam" to the Lord and get themselves relieved of their diseases. It is believed that the Nandi and Karpaga Vinayagar inside the temple are also Swaymbu. In the Sivalingam one can see even today the impression of jasmine creepers which once covbered the Sivalingam.
The shrine for presiding female deity Garbharatchaambikai is situated to the left of the Siva temple. There is also a shrine for Lord Subramanian. Inscriptions from Raja Raja Chola's period as well as those from
Parantaka Cholaâs period (early 10th century) are seen inside the temple.
The special feature of this temple is that the moon's rays falls on the Siva lingam on the full moon day in the
Tamil month of Panguni (March/April) every year.
Pregnant women from elsewhere come here and pray to the God and Goddess for a safe child birth. No one in this place has ever had a miscarriage or pregnancy problem. It is told that worshipping the Main deity
God Shiva will cure all kinds of skin diseases.
Beema , garkiyar , Kouthamar and a lot of ancient kings worshipped the God in this temple

Tamil Podcast #8 Vaaram Oru Alayam- Sri Vallakkottai Murugan Thirukovil,Vallakkottai
sri Kodaiyandavar Thirukovil
Duration 8m 52s

Dear friends
This weekâs Podcast is about âSri Vallakkottai Murugan Thirukovil,Vallakkottai. This temple is situated in âVallakkottaiâ which is well connected to all important places from the Chennai city through STC (state) buses. Journey hours depend upon the distance. Vallakkottai is 51 Km from Chennai, 32 Km from Kancheepuram, 10 Km from Sriperumpudhur and 18 Km from Singaperumal Koil.
The ancient divine poet âArunagirinatharâ has praised Lord Murugan of this temple through his various poems in âThirupughazâ and praised the name of this place as âKodai Nagarâ which is now known as âVallakkottaiâ. We can visual Lord Subramaniyaswamy in a standing posture majestically with 7 feet with Goddess Valli and Deivannai. No one can find anywhere the same, except in this place in this Tamil Nadu.
The sculptures, particularly the bewitching standing statues of Valli and Deivannai, remind us of the artistic workmanship of the Pallava era. The Pallavas erected temples for Siva and Vishnu at various places. Historical evidence is available now to show that Vallam near Kotainagar is one of them.
The temple at Vallakkottai is also known as KÅta Ändavar Kovil. The temple became popular recently in the last ten years. The fact that it is situated in a village lacking of transport facilities may be the reason for it its unpopularity for a long time. Devotees have started visiting the temple, now, in thousands. They are thrilled to see the towering idol (over two meters).
There is a shrine for Lord Vinayaka, to the left of the main temple, in the outer prakara. There is a separate shrine of Paramaguru, Lord Muruga with six faces and twelve arms, on the right side, and also a Karumari Amman shrine. There is a large hall in front of the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Subramanya, adorned by oil and watercolour paintings of the Lord and his consorts.
The temple is open from 5.30 a.m. 1.00 p.m. and then reopens for the evening puja at 3.00 p.m. and is open till 8.30 p.m. on regular days. Skandha Sashti, Sura Samharam, Masi Kumara Sashti, Adi Krithgai and Masi Krithigai, Tamil New Yearâs day and Thai Poosam are special days.

This weekâs Podcast is about âSri Sarvamangala Sametha PalliKondeswarar Alayam, Surutapalliâ .The Pallikondeswara temple in Surutapalli, near Chennai, is unique because it is only at this place that Lord Siva is seen resting His head on the lap of Goddess Parvathi.
This village is on the Chennai-Tirupati route and can be reached easily from Puthur which is about 8 km. (Some of the APSRTC buses stop just outside the temple. A person travelling from Chennai has to cross Poondi and Uthukottai. Surutapalli is midway between Uthukotai and Nagalapuram.)
Rajagopuram is small compared to other temples, but its beauty is rich. The temple is crowded on Pradosham day, participating in the pradosha puja brings immense satisfaction and pleasure.
Entering the main sanctum sanctorum, we find Lord Shiva in reclined posture (6 feet). His Head is slightly slanted and kept on the lap of Goddess Parvati, holding deer in one hand and conch in the other hand, another hand in abhya mudra surrounded by Margandeya Mharshi, other Rishis, Sanagathi Munis, Nandikeshwarar with Veena, Lord Subrahmanya, His Consorts and Lord Ganapathy sitting down.
Normally Lord Shiva is not seen in any temples dedicated to Him in India in reclined posture - whereas Lord Vishnu cane be seen in Sri Rangam, Sri Rangapatnam and Trivandrum. To arrest the uneasiness, He rested for a few seconds in the lap of Goddess Parvathi (again to show the world that nothing is achieved without tribulations and sufferings.
Benefits of Praying Him at this hour include peace, sakala sowbhagyams, spiritual tranquility, promotion, getting back lost wealth, clearing of obstacles in marriage proposals, union of separated couples etc.

This weekâs Podcast is about âAppan Venkatesaperumal Thirukovilâ. ThiruMukkoodal is a place where where 3 rivers(seyyaaRu,paalaRu and vedavathi) converge.
This temple is maintained ASI. A very huge temple, which is very differently built. Like the perumaL sannidhi entrance is from the side. And it comes very close to the outer compound. Not much gap actually. Since this is very close to the river, there are chances of floods coming inside the temple. If you carefully observe at the mandapamâs behind the main sannidhi, you will find a decent drainage system for the water to flow. This temple must be easily around 1200-1500 years old according to the priest!
The Lord at Thirumukkoodal is considered a manifestation of Lord Siva, Brahma and Narayana. His crown looks like the matted locks of Siva and He has a third eye on the forehead.
He wears the Shanku and Chakra like Lord Narayana on His left and right hand and a lotus in one of His hands. He also stands on the lotus which is the symbol of Brahma.

This weekâs Podcast is about âArulmigu Periya Anjaneyar Thirukovil,
The story has been glorified in a temple in Ambur in Vellore district which dates back to centuries. The 11-foot idol of Hanuman carved out of hard black stone has Saneeswara under his foot. The idol and the temple are believed to have been renovated probably in 1489, during the period of Krishanadevaraya of Vijayanagar kingdom who then ruled this region. An inscription found in one corner of the temple testifies to this fact. In 1976, the temple was taken over by the HR & CE department of the State Government. In 1987, Maha Kumbabishekam was performed.
Interestingly, the main deity Hanuman is place in one corner of the sanctum sanctorum facing south. This is considered a rarity in India. It is believed that, because devotees lit oil lamps at this temple, it got rid of the harmful effects of Saneeswara, in one stroke. The temple has been drawing thousands of devotees steadily.
In the eastern corner of Ambur town, in a place called Anaimadugu, a rocky foot print, believed to be that of Hanuman, receives special poojas once a year during the Hanuman Jayanthi celebrations. It is said that Hanuman holding the Parvatha hills in one hand and standing on Saneeswara made a big leap from here to cross the Indian Ocean to reach Sri Lanka where he gave the herb to revive Lakshmana.

A very noble initiative. I listened to episode two and you covered most of the stuff related to that temple. In the temple, moolavar is that it is made of limestone and hence no thirumanjanam for Moolavar- Only Thaila kaappooo.. There is one more related temple in Mahabalipuram called Thirvadandhai where Thayar is sitting on the right lap of Perumal.
