Dharam Singh pours his heart out to people in Jewargi

Special Correspondent

It was his first visit to the constituency after his defeat in elections

Emotional address: In his 45-minute speech, the former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh listed out his contributions to Jewargi.

GULBARGA: The Congress party members extended an emotional welcome to the former Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh when he visited the Jewargi Assembly constituency on Tuesday. This was Mr. Singh’s first visit to the constituency from where he lost the recent concluded Assembly elections.

Mr. Singh laid bare his emotions in his 45-minute address to audience assembled at Dal Mill area, on the outskirts of Jewargi town. Mr. Singh, who occasionally waved at the crowd in the public meeting, restrained his emotions when senior party leaders spoke. It was then Mr. Singh’s turn.

“I have not come here to seek an explanation from the people of Jewargi on why they defeated me. I have come here only to thank you for supporting me all these years,” Mr. Singh said. “I know which village had gone against me and the people behind my defeat in this election.

I am here to do some introspection with you (workers) on the impact of the Assembly election’s outcome on the State polity,” he added.

Mr. Singh put forth the steps taken by him for the development of the Jewargi Assembly constituency and the State in his 36-year political career.

Mr. Singh said no community or caste could point an accusing finger at him for neglecting their interests.

“For every community and caste, I have done something,” he said. He said that it was at his insistence that the Government had declared a general holiday on birth anniversary of the 12th century social reformer, Basaveshwara. He added that the Basavakalyan Development Authority was constituted during his tenure as Chief Minister.

He said: “You might have defeated me in this election… but my worries are about the help extended by the voters of Jewargi to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) to come to power in the State to implement its communalist agenda”. Mr. Singh said that it would be the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which would rule the State by proxy.
‘Worried’

“Karnataka is known for peaceful co-existence of different communities, and I am worried what will happen now,” he said.

In reality he was trying to appease the Lingayats by his espousing the cause of Basaveshwara and it didnt work. He should espouse Basveswara but he should be held accountable for good governance too.

The Chief Minister however "dismissed as rumours" the talk of mass bye-elections in the state. "There is nothing of that sort. We are preparing for the Lok Sabha polls now," he said.

Reacting on the Congress-JD(S) tie up for floor coordination against the Government he said, "it only shows how powerful we are."

Three Karnataka MLAs quit, join BJP

BANGALORE: The ruling BJP in Karnataka got a boost on Saturday when two JD(S) and one Congress legislators quit their parties to join it.

The two JD(S) MLAs — Balachandra Laxman Rao Jarkiholi and K Shivanna Gouda Naik — and Congress legislator Anand Vasant Asnotikar submitted their resignation letters to speaker Jagadish Shettar, who has accepted them. The three legislators have not given any reason for quitting the assembly membership and the parties.

Later, they went to the BJP office where they were admitted to the party. They said they would be contesting the bypolls from the same constituencies on BJP tickets. The "operation resign" was done under the "supervision" of BJP ministers — G Janardhan Reddy and B Sriramulu, who were holding talks with the three for the past one fortnight.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has denied that there was any move by the BJP to break the Congress-JD(S).
