I would think that with proper coaching, in the light-medium weight wrestling,
Indians should be able to do well

Kumar took three periods to beat Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan 2-1, 0-1 and 1-0.

This is India's second ever wrestling bronze in Olympic history.

Spiridonov had finished fourth in the 66kg weight class in Athens, while Kumar took 14th place.

New Delhi (PTI): Rewards started pouring in for Sushil Kumar who won bronze medal in Beijing Olympics today with the Railway Ministry and Delhi Government announcing cash awards to a total of Rs 1.05 crores for the wrestler.

Minutes after Kumar clinched the bronze medal beating Kazakhstan's Leonid Spiridonov in men's freestyle wrestling 66kg class, Railway Minister announced that the grappler will be promoted as a Assistant Commercial Manager from ticketing inspector.

Prasad also announced a cash reward of Rs 55 lakh for Kumar, who is employed with the Railways.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also announced a Rs 50 lakh reward for the wrestler, who hails from Najafgarh in south-west Delhi.

Besides the cash reward, Dikshit also said Satpal, Kumar's trainer who is employed with Delhi Government's Sports Department, will be given an out-of-turn promotion.

"Congratulations to everybody, to Delhi specially. This boy has done remarkably well. He comes from rural Delhi, comes from a government school which makes us doubly proud," Dikshit said.

She said she could not believe that Kumar had won the medal even though everybody was hoping that something will happen. "But we did not expect we will get a bronze."

"I thought my heart has stopped for a minute because I could not believe what I was hearing. The joy and tears have been so spontaneous," she said.

Sushil is only the second Indian grappler to win the wrestling bronze after Kashabha Jadhav had returned with the medal in 1952 Helsinki Games. Shooter Abhinav Bindra has won the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the country earlier at the Beijing Games. <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Just any sport where you have to hit a target as in archery, shooting etc are called lakshyabhEda.

mushti bodhi seems to have used for boxing.

I think Indians have some potential in weightlifting and swimming.

In track and field, its best to concentrate on field events such as hammer throw etc cuz Indians really have no chance in sprints with the likes of Usain Bolt or long distance (dominated by east african origin athletes), perhaps we may do decently in middle distance. Before someone brings up Liu Xiang in 110m hurdles, his WR has already been broken by an Afro-Cuban athlete named Dayron Robles who is the favorite to take the gold tomorrow.

So Indians better weigh their strengths and concentrate on those sports before trying to be all around pandits.

Hindus can definitely outdo others in events like rowing, kayaking, team sports, badminton...etc. Of course, all this can only be achieved if a state sponsored program is set up in Bharat, like it is in China.

If not, then we will be moving at an "Indic pace" (whatever that is) as some other moron said in another forum.

NEW DELHI: Sushil Kumar's ability to grapple with the world's best was known only to the wrestling community till Wednesday when he surprised others by winning the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Talk to his village folk in Boprala in Najafgarh, West Delhi, they will tell you that they knew he was destined for great things, even if wrestling is little-cared sport in the country.

The entire village celebrated Sushil's success and every household from the village head claimed him to be their darling son. His father Diwan Singh, an MTNL driver, said his son promised him a gold and that Sushil must be disappointed for getting a just the bronze. He has put Boprala on the wrestling map of the world.

Diwan Singh said he himself was very fond of wrestling, but the family's economic condition would not allow him to fulfill his ambition. But he did not want his son to meet the same fate.

“Within my limited resources, I tried to see he became a topnotch wrestler and today I am happy that he has fulfilled my long-cherished ambition of becoming a big-time wrestler.”

Diwan Singh did not forget all those who had helped his son, particularly 1982 Asian games gold medallist Satpal, who was there in Beijing when his ward won the medal, and his long-time coach Yashbir Singh, who saw to it that the young wrestler fulfilled his potential. “Of course, the entire village joined them in promoting his passion and today they are all celebrating in a festive way.”

No wonder, Sushil dedicated the medal to his guru Satpal and Yashbir and his parents.

Yashbir told IANS how young Sushil got motivated to wrestling and continued with all seriousness. Nothing would distract him.

“He began to grapple at the age of ten and his first major success came in the world cadet championships in 1998 when he won the gold at 15 in Manchester. He went on to win it a second time in Poland. After that he didn't need any prodding to carry on with wrestling. He kept winning medal at every age-group competition and at least I did not have any doubts about his making big.”

Unlike many wrestlers who fade away after showing great promise at the junior levels, Sushil consistently strove to excel himself at every step of the ladder.

Yashbir said only those who followed his rigorous workout at Patiala and Belarus in the run-up to the Olympics would only know that Sushil was in with a chance of winning a medal, though wrestling was not in the picture of media list of medal winners.

“You have only to see to believe what all his father did for his Sushil,” said an emotionally choked Yashbir, adding “he used to get cans of milk, tins of ghee and a container of freshly-cooked vegetables for him every day. “

The family believes that the blessings and best wishes of the entire village, from children of an impressionable age to nonagenarians, were with Sushil when he was fighting. Everyone was glued to the TV watching every single bout.

“Everybody in the village used to say that among the wrestlers if anybody wins the medal it is going to be Sushil. He used to eat only ghee, milk and vegetables. Coaches have really put in a lot of effort,” said Diwan Singh.

Its also to be noted that of the 3 winners, two are from small town and rural India.

Of the ones who put up decent performances, you have Akhil and Jitender who are also from Bhiwani, same as Vijender. Saina Nehwal was another one who put up a good performance.

Of the big failures I should mention Anju Bobby Goerge, who was hyped up but fouled in all 3 attempts.

Now if the babus had any sense then they would take a look in bhiwani and improve facilities and start looking beyond the big cities, people put their life on the line in Sallikattu in TN, so i am sure there is no dearth of guts, the system is very screwed up and the mono-sport cricket madness has killed a lot of potential.
