In the book “The Imperial Animal,” anthropologists Lionel Tiger and Robin Fox explain that a breeding system is one that operates to survive, defend and perpetuate itself, and that a political system is a form of breeding system. They point out the applicability of “lust” to both sex and political power.

In a curious way, we find lust conjoining the sexual and the political in a 2000-year-old breeding system; curious, because this breeding system is presented to us simple-minded pagans as a theological system, a system that reveals the true “God” and is for the salvation of our souls, in a way that we simple-mindedly think that sex and temporal power are irrelevant to it.

We simple-minded pagans couldn’t be more wrong.

That, both in theory and in practice, the Catholic Church is about sex has been examined in two earlier essays ( http://www.vijayvaani.com/FrmPublicDisplay...le.aspx?id=221; http://www.vijayvaani.com/FrmPublicDisplay...cle.aspx?id=231 ).  That it is about political power is a matter of observation and its history.

An extraordinary book – a revelation, really – documents the lust that permeates this absolute monarchy that (simple-minded pagans, please note) actually has little to do with “God” and saving us for the next world, and everything to do with sex, wealth and power in this world.

<b>The book is: “Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes: The Catholic Church’s 2000-year Paper Trail of Sexual Abuse” by Thomas Doyle, AW Richard Sipe & Patrick Wall (LA: Volt Press, 2006).  It is pertinent that the authors are all Catholics; the first a Dominican priest and the other two former Benedictine monks. Thus the book is an authoritative first-hand inside view of the Catholic Church.</b>

Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes (henceforth SPSC) emphasizes that celibacy – defined by the Church as the not engaging in of any kind of sexual activity - is a mandate of the Catholic priesthood. In fact, it is “essential to the continuation of the clerical subculture, the home of the elite minority who rule the Catholic Church… To abandon celibacy would be to risk the demise of the fortified clerical world and the consequent loss of power and influence.” At least till the Protestant Reformation (1517-1648), the Catholic Church “was the most powerful element of society and also the most influential.” Though its “fundamental and ultimate mission is the ‘salvation of souls,’ the Catholic Church in a very real sense ruled the temporal Christian world (SPSC 8-9, 62, 287).

At the same time, sex with minors has been a feature of the Catholic Church since its inception, with the complicity of Church fathers, from the pope downwards.  Sexual abuse by priests is inherent in the system itself and the widespread sexual activity of its priests is no secret to the Vatican - “the rape and sodomy of children is woven into the tradition of clerical history” (SPSC 212, 215, 295).

Though preached as Church doctrine by the current pope as well, celibacy is not practiced by the majority of Catholic clergymen. It flourishes in the breach – sex as fornication, adultery, and pederasty was already a major concern for the Council of Elvira as early as 309 AD. Especially from the 4th century onwards, sex as masturbation, concubinage, homosexuality, either-sex (adult-adolescent) pederasty and (adult-prepubescent) pedophilia, bestiality, rape, and sexual solicitation (“intercourse, oral and manual sex, verbal sex, and sadomasochistic sex”) during the sacramental confession, has been rampant in the Church.  Church celibacy theory made “sex” a dirty word, even in marriage, but Church theory was never a bar to lustful practice. By the mid-11th century, confessional solicitation had become common; and by the mid-12th century, sex between priests and nuns was a serious concern.

Certainly the Church hierarchy has always been aware of the lustiness of its clergy – but whether fulmination or canonical legislation or toleration, nothing has succeeded in curbing clerical concupiscence.  Indeed, bishops too gratify themselves, and “much of the history of the Roman Catholic Church reads like a cheap paperback novel. Popes have been lechers, murderers, and pedophiles…” In the early 1970s, it was estimated that three-quarters, if not more, of American Catholic priests were psychosexually immature, and this immaturity manifested itself in heterosexual and homosexual activity (not unrelated, in the 1960s, about a quarter of American Catholic priests were estimated to be alcoholics).

At least a third of American Catholic priests are estimated to be homosexually-oriented and “it seems by all accounts that priests molest a larger percentage of minor boys than do abusers in the general population.” The number of non-celibate priests has to be in the thousands given that, of the total American Catholic clergy, 125,000 of them are estimated to have left the Church between 1965 and 1990. The post-1985 number of civil and criminal court actions against lustful priests are in the thousands (SPSC 60, 206; 276; 58; 67; 211; 59; 90, 178).

Relatively recently, in 1922, the Vatican decided this subject merited the deepest in-house secrecy with, from 1962, automatic excommunication of any church person violating this secrecy. From the relative openness with which the Church displayed its sex-stained linen in the early centuries, the 20th century saw it veiling harshly its handling of sex abuse.

SPSC speculates that this defensiveness “reflects a long-standing attitude at the highest level of church authority: denial and blame-shifting,” including blaming the victims of its abuse.  More likely, however, in consequence of lawsuits and “the aggressive expose by the secular press,” it is a reflection of the Church’s desire to conceal and protect its vast temporal wealth from public scrutiny, in the manner of “just another corporation obsessed with its own financial security” - “It’s one thing to neglect to protect the faithful from sexual predators, it’s quite another thing altogether to neglect to protect the church’s assets from lawsuits. Action to protect church assets has never faltered or been neglected. Money speaks loudly” (SPSC 52, 63; 53; 257, 261, 280; xi).

Much of “Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes” focuses on the American picture, and SPSC shows this is representative of the entire Church album (SPSC 278-9). American bishops are subject to the Pope of Rome and it is clear that Rome knows of the sex abuse, not just in America but throughout its domain, and Rome decrees it be kept pardey ke peechhey (behind the curtain).

Detailed in SPSC is the control of the Church over civil authorities and the media, its scandalous blame-the-victim game, its propagation of misinformation, its cunning cover-ups and conspiracies to conceal the crimes of its clergy, and its co-operating with civil authority as strategy only when cornered by public exposure.

What matters to the Church hierarchy is “image, money, and control” – and SPSC proves beyond the shadow of a doubt “the fact and the awareness within the secret system of the Catholic Church of the ongoing presence of sexually abusing priests and the lengths powerful men within that system are willing to go to protect abusers and themselves from exposure.”

The pressing concern is “the possible cost to the Catholic Church of many millions of dollars and the potential devastating injury to its image.” “Spiritual considerations” concern the loosening of the Church’s hold over its faithful (implied is the consequent loss of revenue, since 92% of the money spent on Catholic charities comes from public funds). “Public relations considerations” centre round “the credibility of the church” with “positive programs utilizing imaginative and creative thinking that converts adversity to advantage.” 

The evidence all “projects a portrait of churchmen mired in conspiracy and neglect” so that the Church hierarchy prefers pre-trial settlements to court trials as being “generally more economical”!  By the mid-1990s, the American laity realized “the Catholic Church could not be trusted” and, even in the mid-2000s, the Church still “conspired to hide abusers” and engaged in “prevarication under oath” in “a pattern of arrogance, evasion, and mendacity” (SPSC 88; 98; 106; 162, 258, 281; 164; 177; 178; 203). 

“Clergy exist and perpetuate a cult of secrecy. Lay Catholics are reared in a culture of the unimaginable and unspeakable sexuality of all Catholic clergy. And victims of clergy sexual abuse are cowed into silent submission by religious duress.” SPSC shows the Church’s conscious and pernicious exploitation of the blind faith in it as a breeding system that it commands of its followers - “sex and obedience are intimately connected at the core of the Catholic Church” - “corruption of the priesthood is generated and perpetuated within the clerical system. Corruption does not seep up from the bottom. Corruption is raining down from the top” (SPSC 204; 229, 288; 277; 278).

Catholic priests, by decree, are “charged with representing Christ.” They are “God’s interpreters and ambassadors;” god-like themselves, they are superior to angels; they are “the messengers of God,” a divinely-ordained fraternity – and SPSC shows that devout Catholics actually believe “that priests take the place of Christ… [the priest is] the earthly representative of God himself”. 

The goal of this Church artifice, called “clericalism,” is “the retention of the power, prestige, and image of the members of the elite, especially the bishops” who are presented as apostolic successors but are really “bureaucrats in medieval garb” - and so “denial, dissimulation and deception… flow, quite naturally, from an understanding of the church as a society made up of unequals.” The Church consciously cultivates hierarchy and “reverential fear” among its members, and there are but very fine lines between “reverential fear,” “fearful subservience” and “religious duress.” To the Church, “image – bella figura – is more important than the spiritual and emotional welfare of the tens of thousands of clergy abuse victims” (SPSC 180, 236-8; 243; 289; 283; 248-9, 288-9).

SPSC reports that, even as victims who speak out are “re-victimized” by the bishops and the church lawyers, church officials “frequently requested victims and their families to avoid scandal and not to make an issue of their plight ‘for the good of the church.’” SPSC suggests that “the true good of the church is best served by holding accountable clerics and office holders who abuse the laity in any way” (but that would make the buck stop with the pope himself!), and even goes to the extent of proposing legislation to protect lay-people from the sexual depredations of the Church (SPSC 187-8).


What are we simple-minded pagans to make of all this?

The Catholic Church professes the business of saving souls. SPSC establishes conclusively and rivettingly that it actually murders them. It is guilty of “soul murder” (SPSC 244, 265).

Read SPSC through. The attitudinal parallels – perhaps even connections – of the Roman Catholic Church are remarkable with another institution of Italian origin – the Mafia (see, for example, Paul Williams, “The Vatican Exposed: Money, Murder, and the Mafia,” NY: Prometheus Books, 2003).

In earlier essays, I showed sexual lust is central to Christian creation mythology. SPSC distinguishes between what I call “Professional Christianity” (i.e., Christianity as a proselytizing imperium) and what it calls the “Christian Community and People of God” (SPSC 66).  It is optimistic that with the Church’s obsession with sexual abuse of minors now in the open – and especially because of courts awarding enormous sums to victims – such abuse will end. Given news reports subsequent to the publication of this book of the Church’s unchanged handling of sex abuse cases, and given that there is no indication from the Vatican of any diminution in clericalism, this is a vain hope.

For us simple-minded pagans in India, the essential lessons to be learned from “Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes” are at least three:

1] The Catholic Church is emphatically not about “God,” true or not, and the salvation of our souls. Headed by the Pope of Rome, it is an imperial, missionary-colonial breeding system cloaking itself as a “religion.” Hence, its Pope’s 1999 clarion call in populous India for harvesting us simple-minded pagans. 

It follows that, of the five kinds of visas India issues to foreigners, Church proselytizers should be allowed in only on Business Visas.

2] There is no evidence within the Church of all that sanctimonious virtue it preaches to us pagans as being inherent in its own belief system, over the vice that it propagates is ours.  On the contrary, it itself reeks of dishonesty and depravity; it is “a sewer of iniquity” (SPSC 34).

It follows that its evangelical activity in our country should be banned.

3] Christian theory has it that it’s God created man in His own image and Catholic theory has it that its clergymen are avatar-s of this God.

Given the practices SPSC details so irrefutably of the avatar-s, it follows that the “God” they incarnate has to be in the same image.

Professional Christians vilify and abuse our divinities as obscene. They vilify and abuse us pagans as sinners. Yet, reading SPSC, there can be no doubt at all that Professional Christianity in the form of the Roman Catholic Church is the very personification of at least three of its own Seven Deadly Sins – pride, avarice, and lust.


Where in all this do we find “God” and the salvation of our souls?

Even as the Catholic Church in Kerala is trying to get out of the several controversies surrounding  convents and death of Nuns, Sathyadeepam weekly, the official organ of the Syro-Malabar Church, has admitted that almost 20 percent of the nuns are feeling mentally insecure or unaccepted in convents. The weekly says that five per cent of the nuns are feeling permanently unaccepted.

The BBC reported on October 2 that a group of Christian terrorists, the National Liberation Front of Tripura, has 'banned' the Hindu festival Durga Puja in Tripura. They have warned any tribals that those celebrating this festival will be shot. They declare that they want all of Tripura to be Christian.

It is the same terrorists who shot and killed a Hindu priest a few weeks ago, in his own temple. Similarly, Bineshwar Brahma, a Hindu Bodo activist and litterateur, was shot dead by Christian militants in Guwahati in August, explicitly based on his religion. None of these incidents has been reported widely, or at all, in the Indian print media. I read about them at the BBC's online site.

Christians are on a rampage in the Northeast, indulging in ethnic cleansing and religious violence, killing Hindus, supported by white fundamentalist churches, especially American ones. The human rights of Hindus are being violated: for instance, there are the Reangs who have been ethnically cleansed from their homes. But this is not news for the 'secular' 'progressives'.

There seems to be a conspiracy of silence in the Indian print media about the activities of the Christian Taliban of the Northeast. I wonder, is this silence being bought with cold cash? Or is it purely ideological? Why isn't anyone demanding the kind of action that was taken when that Australian Christian missionary was murdered? Am I wrong in concluding that the life of a white Christian is worth far more than the lives of religious Hindus?

Although the representatives of the terrorist conclave (catholicism) say that they won't be <i>selling</i> it and that it is for the purposes of getting more people back into the confessional onlee, I am sure they will one day start charging money for the indulgences again. Just like earlier popes had decided to sell indulgences whenever they needed to raise money (see further below). In fact, it may be sooner than we think: the catholic church needs to make back all the money it lost in sexual abuse/paedophilia cases where it bankrupted itself, and what better way than to get the money from fleecing its own sheep as it had done for so long?

He embarked on a Papal life of unimaginable extravagance, indulging in expensive carnivals, bull-fights, banquets, theatrical performances and the like. Like many of his Papal predecessors, he was also widely known to have had illicit relations with boys.
Leo X would often hunt on his private game reserve, which was kept for the exclusive use of himself and his cardinals. Any trespassers caught on the property had their hands and feet cut off, their homes burned and their children sold into servitude.
To raise funds for his lavish lifestyle, Leo sold cardinal's hats to atheists and other unbelievers. I<b>n 1515, two years after his election, the vast treasure left by Leo's predecessor Julius II was dissipated. Before his death, Leo tried to pull the church out of its hole by colluding with a German archbishop to sell indulgences. Rs.35000 per person, increasing annually, costing an amount of over Rs 400
cr in 2008 and increasing every year. It may be of interest to you to know
that the Bill to this effect was moved by the so called "secularist" and
"socialist" great man, Jawaharlal Nehru himself.

7                      As nowhere else in this country or anywhere in the
world, the Christian Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy of this state
has started funding Christians' pilgrimage to Jerusalem from the coffers of
the 'secular' state of Andhra Pradesh. This is subversion of our
Constitution. Not a single Hindu Minister in his Cabinet had the honor, much
less courage to demand that like Muslims and Christians, Hindus forming 85%
of the state's  population and contributing 95% of the tax revenues to the
government be also subsidised for their pilgrimages to Manasarover,
Amaranth, Kasi, Prayaga, Mathura, Ayodhya, Vashno Devi, Simhachalam,
Tirupati, Sabarimalai etc.  Not a single MLA or MLC of AP has condemned this
anti-secular, anti-Hindu measure of the GOAP.

8                      Surprisingly, you have promised to the Christians
that your party would continue this type of subsidies for religious
pilgrimages of Christians. It did not occur to you to say that it is wrong
for a 'secular' state to do so. Not even that; you did not invoke the
principle that a 'secular' state should treat all religions alike; you do
not say that Hindus pilgrimages would also be subsidised. This makes us to
suspect that you and your party, like all the so-called 'secular' parties,
are engaged in appeasement of minorities in the fond hope of getting their

reservations meant for Hindu SCs would be extended to the dalits in
Christianity. I am sure you are not ignorant about the claims of
Christianity that in it, there is no caste and no untouchability and that
all are equal according to the Christian creed. It is by propagandizing this
tenet of Christianity that missionaries and evangelists and churches are
luring SC Hindus to convert to Christianity. Christianity is hundreds of
years old in this country; yet it is practising discrimination against the
Hindu SCs who are converted to Christianity. Are you aware that out of over
300 Bishops just only one or two are from the so-called dalit Christians
whereas they constitute more than 80% of Christians in India? It is the
Brahmin, Reddy, Kamma and such upper caste converts to Christianity that are
Bishops. Church organizations, Christian-managed educational and medical
institutions do not provide reservations for dalit Christians. Why should
secular governments do so?

10                    You must be aware that in South Africa, the white
European-descent Christian rulers practised untouchability against the black
Africans converted to Christianity until the year 1994. White European
Christians exterminated 40 million indigenous people in Americas. White
Christians traded in slaves and held slaves. The American civil war was
fought on the issue of abolition of slavery.  Abolition of slavery was
proclaimed over 150 years ago, untouchability and segregation against the
black Afro- Americans were practiced by the white Christians in the USA till
the 1960s. Even today, Afro-American Blacks have their churches separate
from the churches of the white European origin Christians.

11                    Christianity is thus a great fraud in saying that
there is no untouchability or discrimination against low-class, low-caste
converts like Hindu SCs or black Africans or Afro-Americans. To such
fraudster Christianity, you are promising that reservations meant for Hindu
SCs would be extended to converts. It would mean encouragement of Hindu SCs
and others to convert to Christianity! Do you please realize this? Is it not
an anti-Hindu position?

12                    90% of the government servants who have got their jobs
in reservation quota by declaring themselves as Hindu SCs are in fact
practising Christians-. After retirement Stanley Babu, of South Central
Railways, Sri Danam retired IAS officer etc., are examples. One William, an
SC Christian is Chairman of the AP State SC/ST Finance Corporation.  What do
Hindus owe to them, to such fraudster Christianity in Andhra Pradesh that
you are promising to help? Should not 85% of voters who are Hindus deem your
promise as an anti-Hindu stand? Do you know that Dr B R Ambedkar, whose
photo you are exhibiting along with Mother Teresa, told his people not to
convert to Christianity as the moment they do so, they cease to be Indians;
they get denationlised? Dr B R Ambedkar also told SCs that they should not
convert to Islam either as the brotherhood in that religion is confined to
Muslims and the rest are all kafirs, fit to converted or killed. Mahatma
Gandhi, whom hundreds of millions of Indians revere, answering a pointed
question by missionaries before Independence said, that 'if I had the power
I would, after India gained Independence, send out all the missionaries from
the country. He held conversion as the greatest violence, involving utmost
fraud. This is what Christian missionaries and Christian organisations in
Andhra Pradesh are engaged in and to them you are promising subsidised
pilgrimage and extension of reservations for Hindu dalits converted to
Christianity. This is a blatant, in fact, a competitive exercise to appease
minorities.

13                    I appeal to you not to compete with fraudsters, vote
gatherers and traitors to Hinduism in making promises to Christians and
Muslims in the hope of getting their votes. Have you promised to Hindus what
you promise to Christians (and Muslims)?  Do you know that the so called
minority colleges sell 70% of their seats to Hindus and they don't give them
all to minority students?

14                    Finally, I request you to read the enclosed articles
and booklets which bear upon the great assault that Hindus and India are
being subjected to by the evil quartet of Marxists, Muslims, Missionaries
and Macaulayans (i.e., English medium educated persons, who are only in
colour and blood Indian, but in culture, belief, tastes, view of India,

<b>‘Amen — an autobiography of a nun’, released last week, is written by Dr Sister Jesme, 52, who was the Principal of St Mary’s College, Thrissur, till last August when she quit the Congregation of Mother Carmelite (CMC).</b>

<b>“Dedicated to Jesus”, Amen is explicit in its details of the sexual repression and harassment behind the Church walls as well as the draconian rules and “greed” of the Order.</b> Jesme claims that since the book was released, she has been getting calls pledging solidarity.

“Nuns mingle with the whole spectrum of the community around them. They teach students, comfort the aged and nurse the sick; still the brides of the Church remain an enigma. My work would throw light on the misunderstood convent life, engulfed in darkness,” says Jesme.

Apart from the Abhaya murder in which a nun and priests are accused, the Kerala Church was recently in the news for a priest “adopting” a 26-year-old woman.

Jesme’s autobiography includes a poignant version by her of how the convent authorities tried to twice prove that she had mental problems and get her admitted into a rehab centre after she reportedly spoke out against the malpractices within the Order.

Starting with her first days in the Church, 30 years ago, she talks of priets forcing novices to have relations with them and the closet homosexuality within nun ranks, “which the Church reckons as the dirtiest thing possible”. “If nuns developed unusual interest in each other, authorities would deploy other inmates to watch them,” she writes.

The book says Jesme herself was forced into such a relationship by a fellow nun, and that her complaints to a senior nun were ignored. According to her, the other nun said she preferred such a relationship as it ruled out pregnancy. There were others who had affairs with priests, she writes.

Another passage in Amen deals with a chance encounter Jesme had with a priest in Bangalore while on her way to Dharwar to attend a UGC refresher course in English. “My plan was to stay at the waiting room at the Bangalore railway station. But sisters in the convent gave me the address of a pious, decent priest. When I reached Bangalore, the priest was waiting to receive me. He embraced me and took me to his presbytery. After breakfast, he took me to Lalbagh (Botanical Garden) and showed me several pairs cuddling behind trees. He also gave a sermon on the necessity of physical love and described the illicit affairs certain bishops and priests had.”

Later, when they were in his room, she writes, he stripped and made her do the same.

(All the above is EXACTLY what happened among the christian communities parasiting in Rome - as admitted by early fathers of the christian church - and in the nunneries in the dark and medieval ages of christian Europe. It is happening again, now, in far-off India - because such things ARE christianism.)

Jesme claims that while nuns in the lower ranks were punished if caught for even minor offences, <b>the Church turned a blind eye to those superior or with influence for major transgressions.</b>

Talking about the Church’s draconian rules, Jesme writes in the book that she was not allowed to go home when her father died, or to even pray some extra hours for his soul. “I was able to see my father barely 15 minutes before the funeral. The alibi of the superiors was that the then senior sisters were not even lucky enough to see the bodies of their parents.”

During her time in the Church, Jesme often ran into problems with superiors. She was called “cine nun” after she provided office facility for a film festival at St Mary’s College, leading to the first campus film from the college, as well as when she shared dais with a sex worker for the release of a book on the life of a prostitute.

<b>Since quitting CMC, Jesme has been staying alone in a flat in Kozhikode. On Jan. 25, as the Sri Lankan Army moved in to capture Mullaitivu town, the military capital of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), better known as the Tamil Tigers, it became evident that this 15,000-strong terrorist army will be homeless within weeks.

In London, the first overseas headquarters of the Tigers, set up in 1984, the crisis is now at hand. Her Majesty’s Service, which has maintained these terror warriors for more than two decades, in hopes of gaining access to a port in the Tamil-majority area, to establish a British naval presence in the Indian Ocean adjacent to India, is finding its dreams vanishing in thin air. We present here a case study of but one element of London’s hydra-headed international terrorist apparatus.

The routing of the Tigers by the Sri Lankan military and capture of  Mullaitivu, the strongest Sea Tiger (sea-wing of the LTTE) base, and the last of the urban settlements under the Tigers’ control, has put the Gordon Brown government on the spot. The Tigers had been hoping that London would intervene against its former colonial subjects to stop the war and save the warriors.

But Sri Lanka, with close ties to China, India, and the United States, put the derelict British on notice and carried out a relentless military campaign to oust what some “experts” considered for years to be an “invincible” force.


<b>Pinch Hitting for the Terrorists</b>
Even with the handwriting on the wall, the opium-drugged British lion did not stop whimpering. Addressing a Tamil diaspora meeting, jointly organized by the All Party Sri Lanka Parliamentary Group and British Tamil Forum (BTF) at the Westminster Parliament on Jan. 27, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Lord Mark Malloch-Brown wrung their hands in anguish. Miliband sounded desperate when he said Sri Lanka should go for a political solution that safeguards the rights of the Tamil community.

“We are calling for every right of the Tamil people; political, cultural, and religious rights are respected. We are serious in our attempts. We also call for open access for journalists. But the first step is to stop the killings. We will use every possible tool available to us to stop the killings,” Miliband said, with the sanctimoniousness for which the Foreign Office is famous.

To begin with, Miliband knows that Colombo was going after a group of militants, acknowledged by most nations, other than such British “half-crown” colonies as Australia, as terrorists, and that the Tigers do not represent the Tamil community of Sri Lanka. Miliband’s lying comes naturally to him: It is part of the training bestowed on him by Her Majesty’s Service.

But, Miliband did issue a veiled threat when he said: “We will use every possible tool available to stop the killings.” <b>The world is aware of what tools London has used to make the Tigers as powerful as they have been.</b>


<b>‘Terroristan’ on Display</b>
A few days before the Sri Lankan military captured the Tigers’ Mullaitivu base, the trial of Arunachalam Chrishanthakumar, known as “Shanthan,” came to the Kingston Crown Court in South West London. Shanthan, widely known as the “numero uno” Tiger operator in Britain, was first questioned in 2004, when he was caught buying military uniforms and equipment at an army surplus store in Southsea, Hamsphire, England; he was not arrested.

The surplus items on his shopping list included 250 pairs of combat boots, 251 army-style ponchos, 30 machetes, 152 trenching spades, and 110 pairs of U.S. military handcuffs, according to court records.

Shanthan was arrested for the first time in 2007, under the U.K. Terrorism Act 2000, and subsequently released. He was re- arrested in 2008. Of note: Britain had proscribed the Tigers as a terrorist group in 2001.

Why, then, was Shanthan not arrested in 2001? During the trial following his 2008 arrest, it came to light that Shanthan was not simply a Tiger; he was also an agent of MI5, the British national security service.

This case has an eerie similarity to that of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who was recruited by MI6 (foreign intelligence service) and sent to Kosovo in the 1990s. Later, Omar Saeed was sent to join the jihadis in Pakistan, where he kidnapped and slit the throat of the Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl.

Evidently, these were the kind of “tools” Miliband was threatening to use in Sri Lanka to protect the empire’s interests.

At the trial of Shanthan and three other Tigers, at the Kingston Crown Court, Jonathan Laidlaw QC prosecuting, said the men were among 300,000 Tamils living in Britain, and added: “As you might expect because of this country’s close links with Sri Lanka and the large Tamil community which lives in the U.K., the authorities through its agencies such as Special Branch, held regular meetings with [Shanthan].”

Between 2004 and 2007, the Special Branch (the U.K. investigative unit) continued to meet Shanthan; in 2007, his home in Norbury, South London was raided. Shanthan was found to be in possession of equipment which could be used in improvised explosive devices (IEDs), along with high-powered magnets of the type used to attach limpet mines to Sri Lankan Naval vessels. The Kingston Court also exhibited two lists found with Shanthan, which included equipment that could be used to track boats and plans to manufacture in Taiwan 7,500 printed circuit boards with timing and switching functions that could have been used for a “nefarious purpose,” the court was told.

Laidlaw said: “Shanthan as head of the LTTE in London was the co-coordinator of the procurement exercise. He was in contact with senior LTTE figures in Sri Lanka, receiving their orders and requests and, on occasions, buying equipment himself.”


<b>Britain’s Undeclared War against Sri Lanka</b>
In other words, British intelligence, the paid functionaries of Her Majesty’s Service, was conducting warfare against the Sri Lankan government, by providing the Sri Lankan terrorist group with the weapons to endanger the nation’s security.

But the Shanthan case was only the proverbial tip of the iceberg. The link between the British establishment/security services and the Tigers does not begin or end with Shanthan’s procurement of military equipment as an MI5 agent. In fact, Britain had long been one of the most important centers for the Tigers’ fundraising activities, others being some of the British “half-crown” colonies - Australia, Canada, Norway, and South Africa.

One of the most important elements in this operation was bring to London <b>Anton Balasingham, the “theoretician” of the Tigers, and asset of the British intelligence services.</b> Balasingham, whose wife Adele is Australian and holds a British passport, was often in the Tiger-zone to meet the group’s supremo, Vellupillai Pirabhakaran, who also held a British passport. Despite the fact that Balasingham was negotiating on behalf of the Tigers for a ceasefire with Colombo, as late as 2006, and the Tigers were proscribed as a terrorist organization by Britain, he remained free from 1999, when he moved to London with his wife, until 2006, when he died. It is evident that Balasingham was acting as a liaison for the British establishment, passing on valuable information to Pirabhakaran.

Since Balasingham’s death, Adele, who was involved in the peace talks, as the secretary of the LTTE delegation, has become the spokeswoman for the LTTE, and was reported holding occasional fundraising events in England.

A former Indian cabinet minister, Dr. Subramaniam Swamy, went on record saying: “Balasingham was a terrorist who at least once has publicly and arrogantly relished the assassination of [former Indian Prime Minister] Rajiv Gandhi. In 1995 he had warned the then President of Sri Lanka, Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga, that she would face the same fate as Rajiv Gandhi if she confronted the LTTE.”


<b>London’s Drug Mercenaries for Hire</b>
It is almost a certainty that neither the upending of the Tigers in Sri Lanka, nor the death of Balasingham, nor the arrest and exposé of Shanthan will sever the links between Her Majesty’s Service and the Tigers.

While these developments may bring about a lower level of threat to Sri Lanka, there may be a greater threat to other nations in the crosshairs of Britain and the Tigers. The collaboration would continue because British officials and diplomats have often visited Wanni (the heart of the Tamil-dominated area in northern Sri Lanka) and met Tiger leaders in Kilinochchi, the “capital” of the Tigers, now under control of the Sri Lankan military.

In a unique report on the financial operations of the LTTE, the August 2007 issue of Jane’s Intelligence Review wrote that, with financial and procurement structures well organized and strategically positioned around the globe, the group has a profit margin that would be the envy of any multinational corporation - some US$200 to 300 million per year. While some of this amount comes from the Tamil expatriates worldwide, much of it is generated through drug trafficking, gun running, smuggling of contraband items, and even running prostitution rings.

In 2000, the Swiss French-language daily Le Courrier raised questions about LTTE fundraising in Switzerland, of nearly 1 million Swiss francs (US$600,000) per month, in addition to using “drug money” to finance its 54 offices throughout the world, and to buy weapons. Further elaborating on the far-flung Tiger operation, the article said that the “Tamil Tiger octopus has long tentacles.”

In 1999, a Tamil commando was arrested in New Delhi after a shootout which led to the seizure of 14.5 kilograms of heroin. Further investigation by the Indian police revealed a network of <b>drug traffickers which involved a Mumbai-based drug-lord, Ali Khan, and two LTTE members.</b>

By 1999, the LTTE’s credentials as major drug traffickers had already been established. Studies by Indian diplomatic sources indicated the LTTE was operating freely inside Myanmar in the 1990s, making and distributing heroin. Investigations later provided alleged proof of collaboration between a section of the Myanmar military and the Tamil Tigers.

Over the years, Tamil drug smugglers with direct links to the Tigers have been arrested in Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, and Canada. Diplomats have concluded the Tamil Tigers’ “independence” fight has become overshadowed by its outside businesses, first and foremost, drugs.

The drug money also played a major part in keeping the Tiger militia armed. However, the northern Sri Lankan port of Jaffna and a large pirate fleet maintained by the LTTE armed forces play a relatively minor role in the anti-Colombo war, compared to its role in drug trafficking. In the Indian state of Manipur, located in the northeast, bordering Myanmar, the LTTE has developed a base. This group of Tigers broke off from the Sri Lankan resistance, and instead, became a part and parcel of militias that bring in guns and drugs from Myanmar and Southeast Asia, and sell to various militant secessionist, ethnic, and jihadi groups that operate in northeastern India and Bangladesh.

There exist many reports of the Tigers using the drug money to purchase sophisticated weapons and ammunition, either directly from the Indian traffickers, or from their contract people in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Besides the submachine guns purchased from Israeli arms dealers, the LTTE is said to have gotten supplies from Afghanistan (U.S. and Soviet ground-to-air missiles), Ukraine (explosives), Cambodia, and Myanmar.

But beyond the traditional drug- and gun-running, the Tigers have been accused of running assassination squads in Europe, targeting dissident Tamils. Their objective is to control the Tamil diaspora in Europe, to collect money. This ring of Tamil Tigers, believed to be centered in Norway, attacks rival Tamils to prevent them from competing for the money in the diaspora.

It is evident that the estimated $200-300 million raised annually from these activities, can corrupt many politicians and maintain many assassination squads. In Britain, the Tigers have continued to raise funds at functions open to the public, and attended by British parliamentarians. The British have facilitated fundraising for the Tiger terrorists on British soil, since 1984, and are in no mood to abandon them. The Tigers have openly held events in the U.K. to celebrate suicide bombers and fund their terror war against sovereign nations. British politicians attend these events in exchange for money and votes from terrorists and their dupes living in the U.K.

For instance, on Dec. 8, 2007, a row broke out over the attendance of three Labour Party MPs - the high profile Keith Vaz, Virendra Sharma, and Joan Ryan - at a several-thousand-strong expatriate Tamil event, organized to pay respect to those who died in the “Tamil liberation struggle.” Vaz jointly chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils with Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes, who sent a message to the rally.


<b>Threat to India</b>
The LTTE has already launched an anti-India campaign through its websites. The campaign accuses India of not exercising its authority to pressure Colombo to call a ceasefire. The anger of the Tigers has been directed against the Indian government and the Congress (I) party, the largest party in the ruling coalition, UPA.

<b>The objective of the Tigers ostensibly is to rev up the Tamils in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, across the Palk Straits, against India’s refusal to protect the Tigers.</b> A large section of Tamil expatriates living in Europe, Australia, South Africa, and Canada also seems to have joined the British-Tiger lobby, saying Colombo could not have succeeded in ousting the Tigers without military help from New Delhi.

A senior Indian intelligence official noted recently that the target of the most vicious campaign of the Tigers is Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. The Congress (I) is projected as the “Sonia Congress” and the “Dynasty Congress,” and the government of India as the “Sonia Establishment.” The official pointed out that keeping in view the dangers of a negative impact of such attacks on the minds of irrational elements in the Tamil community, it would be prudent to strengthen the security for Mrs. Gandhi.

<b>Pro-LTTE lawyers, police clash leaves judge hurt</b>

It was as if the LTTE fighting the Sri Lankan forces. At least the mood was such when police on Thursday tried to arrest 13 pro-LTTE lawyers involved in the attack on Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday.

Over 50 persons were injured, including a judge and a journalist, following the pitched battle between the lawyers and the police in the late afternoon inside the premises of the Madras High Court. The lawyers were demanding the arrest of Swamy. The State Government has ordered CBI probe into the incident.

It was almost like <b>a battlefield with the lawyers on one side and the police on the other. When the police attempted to arrest the 13 lawyers involved in the attack on Swamy, the lawyers began pelting stones at the police.</b> The police advanced on the violent lawyers, lathi-charging them. The irate lawyers set fire to the B-4 police station situated inside the court premises. According to police sources, the station is virtually gutted. Numerous vehicles parked inside the premises were damaged in the milieu as the two-wheelers and four-wheelers lay damaged and broken with glass and plastic shards all around. The protesters also torched some of the parked vehicles in anger. Traffic on NSC Bose Road was disrupted.

Some lawyers rushed to a court to complain about the happenings to some judges and the latter came out to inspect the situation. In the process Justice Arumugam Perumal Adityan was injured by a pelting stone. Two cameramen and a journalist of television channels were caught in the crossfire and were injured. People — mostly lawyers — were seen walking around with blood oozing from head injuries or being carried away by the police.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister K Anbazhagan read out a message from ailing Chief Minister M Karunanidhi expressing distress over the attack on Swamy. He also said that the law would take its own course against the perpetrators. According to a senior police official, the 13 lawyers were easily identified as there were many eyewitnesses, including police officials, to the Tuesday’s incident.

Anticipating trouble, a posse of police personnel was stationed in the court premises while arresting the lawyers. When trouble began, additional forces were sent.

Meanwhile, a division bench on Thursday morning ordered that a five-judge bench, headed by acting Chief Justice Mukhopadhyaya, would hold an enquiry into the attack on Swamy. It also directed the DGP to file a detailed report on the attack. The other members of the panel are Justice Prabha Sridevan, Justice Murugesan, Justice Dhanapalan and Justice K Chandru. The panel would hear the case on March 11.

Justice Mukopadhyaya assured that such attacks would not happen in a court hall again. He also said that some recommendations have been made to Advocates Association and the Bar Council. The DGP has also been asked to give a detailed report on the security arrangement and the number of personnel present in the court.

But this was before the afternoon mayhem.

Criticising the violence that defamed the seat of law in Tamil Nadu, Swamy said: "They are just some pro-LTTE people. They cannot hold the society to ransom. The police are just doing its duty. In fact, only a handful of lawyers are involved in today's clashes and a major portion instead attended the court proceedings."

Members of the Madras High Court Advocates Association have been boycotting the city courts for the past two weeks over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, demanding immediate ceasefire by the Sri Lankan forces.

Pandemonium also prevailed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly where PMK, MDMK and CPI MLAs clashed with Congress MLAs over External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement in the Parliament on Wednesday. It seemed the tension had been defused till all of a sudden two companies (roughly 200 securitymen) from the Swift Action Group (SAG)', a wing of the Armed Reserve Police, reached the spot around 3.15 pm. <b>Bolstered by the presence of the SAG, police made a bid to arrest 20 lawyers, who were identified as those involved in the attack on Subramaniam Swamy.</b>

As lawyers shoved, the SAG personnel went berserk and pelted stones. Ramasubramani could, at best, keep his small force of local police men under control temporarily. The SAG personnel were in no mood to listen to the joint commissioner, said a witness. In no time, both sides had resorted to pelting stones.

The securitymen struck with batons, stones and everything else aimed at them. Lawyers were chased across the campus and caned; cars and motorbikes parked on the campus owned by both advocates and their clients also bore the brunt. Policemen damaged windshields of vehicles and overturned bikes. They also barged into court halls, offices of government lawyers, mediation centres, libraries and a dispensary on the campus and damaged properties. Refusing to give in, lawyers too resorted to stoning the police.

<b>Though the entire top brass of the city police was present, they could exercise little control over the force.</b> Even when the acting chief justice, flanked by a dozen senior judges, came out of the court and walked towards the battlezone to pacify the warring groups, they were greeted by stones and had to beat a hasty retreat. Justice Arumuga Perumal Adityan who advanced towards the police cordon waving his hands, was lathicharged and suffered an injury on his head. The climax to the clash was the burning of the police station on the campus. As security personnel withdrew from inside the structure, advocates barged in and smashed up the property before setting it on fire.

Later, justifying the presence of the SAG on the court campus, a senior official later said, "We were forced to send the SAG because on many previous occasions, lawyers had gone on a rampage, smashing shops and vehicles on the road. We anticipated the problem and we wanted to be fully prepared to face it. But trying to arrest the lawyers on the court campus was a costly mistake. We could have picked them up from their houses later."
