Is this 'Jayasudha' you mention a christian? (<i>If so</i>, retaining such a Hindu name would make the bearer a crypto.)

In a strategic move aimed at ending the dynastic control of the family of late veteran State Congress leader Vasantdada Patil over Sangli in western Maharashtra, the BJP on Wednesday withdrew its candidate Deepak Shinde from the Lok Sabha poll fray in favour of relatively stronger Congress rebel candidate Ajit Ghorpade.
The BJP sprang a surprise on last day of the withdrawal of nominations for the second phase of Lok Sabha poll in Maharashtra when it virtually pulled Shinde out of the fray and threw its lot with Ghorpade, a sitting Congress MLA from Kavathe Mahankal constituency in Sangli district. Ghorpade has rebelled against sitting Congress MP and its official candidate Pratik Patil, grandson of late Vasantdada Patil and son of former Congress MP Prakashbapu Patil, and is contesting as an independent.
State BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari said: <b>âWe have decided to withdraw our candidate from the fray because we would like to defeat the Congressâ official candidate at any cost.â </b>
The Sangli seat has been with the Patils since 1980 when late Vasantdada Patil contested the LS poll for the first time. The absolute control of the Patils over Sangli has not gone down well with others â including senior leader Patangrao Kadam â within the Congress and the Opposition.
Bhandari candidly admitted that Ghorpade is relatively stronger than Shinde to take on Pratik Patil. âPlus we expect Ghorpade â if he wins â to support the NDA after the Lok Sabha poll,â the BJP spokesperson said.
<b>A structural engineer from IIT, Chennai, who manages a private firm at Sangli, Shinde was himself not physically present when his nomination came to be withdrawn. âI had sent my cousin Abbasaheb Shinde â who had proposed my candidature â along with an authorisation letter shortly after I received a fax from State BJP president Nitin Gadkari advising me to withdraw my papers,â</b> Shinde told The Pioneer.

 Maneka complaint
With the Election Commission yet to decide the case of Railway Minister<b> Lalu Prasad Yadavâs inflammatory speech to run a ârollerâ on Varun Gandhi, BJP Member of Parliament from Pilibhit, Maneka Gandhi on Wednesday lodged a complaint accusing Lalu of insult and criminal intimidation</b>. The EC is also considering cases against former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, BJP leader Jaswant Singh and Andhra Congress chief D Srinivas for model code of conduct violations.
The fresh case against Lalu for his alleged remarks that he would have âcrushedâ Varun Gandhi under a roller for his anti-Muslim speeches came after Maneka found the comments âderogatoryâ and complained to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Badaun (Uttar Pradesh) to take action. The matter was later transferred by UP Police to Bihar Police since the cause of action arose in Bihar.
âAs this matter (making remarks) does not belong to Badaun or our State we have forwarded the complaint to Bihar Police for further actionâ, Additional Director General, Law and Order Brij Lal informed mediapersons.
In her complaint, the MP and Varunâs mother said, âRJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has threatened to kill Varun Gandhi by crushing him with a roller in front of a crowd of thousands of people and used derogatory words.â<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Pioneer News Service | New Delhi
Issues notice to Lalu, Rabri, Srinivas
Under pressure to not only be impartial but also appear to be so, the Election Commission on Thursday issued notices to two senior RJD leaders â Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi â as well as Andhra Pradesh Congress chief D Srinivas for allegedly violating the election code of conduct. The Commission also served notice on Uddhav Thackeray for his âhateâ remarks on the Prime Minister.
The EC was under public scanner after it took the unprecedented step of advising the BJP to drop Varun Gandhi as its candidate for a âhate speech,â with the BJP accusing the Commission of acting in a partisan manner.
The Commission, after considering the CDs containing the hate speech by Lalu promising to run a ârollerâ over the BJP candidate from Pilibhit, Varun, for supposedly making anti-Muslim remarks, decided to issue the notice to the Bihar strongman. Though Lalu offered an explanation that his remark was misinterpreted, since he was referring to a âroller of law,â the Commission seemed unimpressed. But it took the EC nearly three days after the alleged hate remarks were made at a rally in Kishanganj, to issue the notice (Bihar).
Besides the Commission notice, Lalu is facing a criminal charge as the district administration had lodged an FIR against the RJD chief on direction from the Commission. Another complaint by BJP MP Maneka Gandhi is pending with Bihar Police, where she has said that the statement amounted to insult and criminal intimidation and a threat to kill her son.
Moments after the Commission dispatched notice to the leaders in question, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, speaking from Patna said, âWe have submitted a formal letter of complaint to the EC on Laluâs comment. Itâs now for the EC to take a right decision in the matter as it is a testing time for the EC to show its fairness.â
Informing about the notices also being issued to Rabri Devi, Srinivas and Uddhav, Deputy Election Commissioner JP Prakash, while addressing the media said that all the leaders have been given time till April 11 to reply.
