Ladies & Gentlemen,

A couple of questions: Have you ever bought any books, online, from Indian sites? Are there any particular, known, sites that you have used? Any price matching sites ala pricegrabber, pricematch, allbookstores et al.,

A few books I'm looking for right now:
 • #@$^%*&()$^%*&

 • #^%*&()_+$^%&*(

 • #$^%*&()_+^%*&()

Added later: Please continue to use this thread for news & discussion about buying books from/about India.

Krishna: Check out Granth.com - they have the Kargil book. Not sure about Hawksley stuff.

Have used Rediff in past (before dork d'souza) to buy entire Tintin series <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Since the thread exists, thought I too might aswell piggyback of Krishna.

Anyone with ideas on place where I can get complete collection of Phantom,Mandrake, Amar Chitra Katha comics? Note, I want entire series, not buying them in a piecemeal fashion.

Nah Viren, That's perfectly fine. I know the Humphrey Hawksley books are available on amazon.co.uk but wanna see if it's available any cheaper, from somewhere in India.

There are two main reasons I started this thread:

#1. First to save money, and find the best deal.

#2. Give business to Indians rather than buying it off a Candian / British site.

Be rest assured that there would be atleast one Indian making a living developing or maintaining these british/canadian sites <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Thanks a bunch Mudy. With Diwali around corner, will have to concoct some tale of a hindu mr. claus who drives UPS trucks delivering gifts for grown up kids <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I have ordered from BibliaImpex more than once (bibimpex@nda.vsnl.net.in),2/18 Ansari Rd., New Delhi - 110002, India. The person to contact is Pradeep Goel. You end up paying about 50% more (for shipping and handling by air) than the Re price. This is about the best deal i have come across. Indiaclub, which i have used also is slightly more expensive. Biblia Impex ships promptly. I received the books 3 weeks after i put the cashiers check in the mail box in the USA. They are honest and reliable. Most of the quotation process can be done via email fairly rapidly. The late Arvind Ghosh had a huge collection of Books for sale o n the internet, but i dont hear aboutit after his death. Ghosh was a remarkable individual .

I have also used Saujanya Books (saujanya@del3.vsnl.net.in).

crossposted excerpt from clash of civilizations

(this was originally posted by Vishal agarwal in another site)SUPPORTING MLBD: Let us act positive here now. We need to thank Motilal

Banarsidass for their principles stand. Their email is mlbd@vsnl.com and it

should be addressed to Rajeev Jain. More than that, let us place an order

for their books, either directly from outside India or via our relatives in

India. In case some of us have been their patrons (for instance I have

purchased Rs 15000 worth of books in 2001-2002 and the order for 2003 has

been sent via a friend in India), let us remind them of this. Please visit

their website at http://www.newagebooksindia.com/link.htm

I urge you to place an order soon, either directly from the US or via your

friends in India. Their books are priced very reasonably. And they have tons

of titles of great worth.

Of course, do not buy books by Patrick Olivelle, Cynthia Humes (not that she

has any), Robert Zydenbos (not that he would have any) and so on. If they

boycott and intimidate Hindus, we will boycott their books.

Please, Please spread this message (especially the part on buying books from

MLBD, and thanking them via letters) on various lists of Indians and Hindus.

We really need to do this as a token of our appreciation. The owners of MLBD

are devout Hindus/Jains, a fact I know for sure through mutual acquaitances.

They see their work not merely as a profession but also as a dharmic act. We

need to support them. Remember that MLBD has completed 100 yrs of their

existence and are currently offering an additional 10% discount for all

purchases above Rs 500.

I'm in same delimna with his 'Red Rabbit'. It's cure for insomnia.

Try reading the Line of Control by Clancy. It's about India and Pak and the story sucks big time. An entire thread could be devoted to just discussing silly 'logic' used by Clancy. Guy makes his living by living in Cold war era.

His cold war books are good. They are the only ones which are good, by the way.

I think all of you know about unt for Red October. Red Storm Rising is excellent also.

Cardinal of Kremlin not bad. And the one about China invading Russia. Red Rabbit is probably one of the worst ones. I could never finish any of his Op Center books.

One of the biggest deficiencies with regard to Hinduism/Sanatana Dharma is the fact that even today its so difficult to find authentic/unbiased translations of the vedas Commonplace.
While its next to impossible not to bump into several versions of the Koran/Bible in bookstores, a slim text transcripted by some ganja hippie titled yHindusim 101 is the solitary text wedged in the most unseen corner.
Its a really pathetic problem that we've just haven't moved to solve.

Indeed the Koran has been translated into amost all languages of the world...there are Free Ebooks/Mp3's readily available for download...and often people of other faiths ask the same questions? Why aren't they more accesible? One of the reasons why Islam is growing...

A very biased aritcle with a negative Hindu slant asks the same :
Hindu-Muslim understanding

Ive also been trying to find good translations of the Mahabharata, Ramayan, and the Gita.

Ive read Mahabharat, Ramayan translations by C Gopalachari and found them quite enjoyable. I plan to get them shipped from India....Are there any others?

Bhagavad Gita as it is Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada seems to be a favorite for the Gita however reading the reviews on Amazon.com...there are a few who comment that there is a strong bias in his writing.....can anyone please name some others?

Amazon Link Gita as it is Prabhupada

Of course the ideal would be to learn sankrit and read original prints....take me a decade and away from India Forum... <!--emo&Big Grin--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Praneet, for the Gita check out..

<b>Universal Message of the Bhagvadgita - An exposition of the Gita in the Light of Modern Thought and Modern Needs

Vol 1, 2 & 3

By Swami Ranganathananda</b>

Swami Ranganathananda is the present President of the Ramakrishna Math. This book is based on the lectures he gave in Hyderabad over a period of 2 years(?) every Sunday.

He is a very knowledgable person. He includes modern scientific discoveries like Schrodinger's uncertainity principle and evolutionary biology and modern psychology.

The book provides the original verses in Devanagari, English transliteration, Shankara's commentary followed by Swami Ranganathananda's explanation.

It is published by the Advaita Ashrama. You can get it any of the Ramakrishna Missions in India or the USA.

You can also check out "Eight Upanishads" by Swami Gambhirananda.. (2 vols, Published by Advaita Ashrama again) This one has the Devanagari verses and English translation of Shankara's commentary. You may find it a little cryptic since it includes only Shankara's commentary, but it is a good start to get the essense of the Upanishads. Ofcourse the Bhagvadgita is the ultimate commentary on the Upanishads made by none other than the great Shri Krishna himself. <!--emo&Smile--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Ramakrishna Mission publishes quite a variety of books on the Hindu scriptures. You should check them out.
