From reading the reports sounds like the cause was a tire burst on one of the mains, which caused the airplane to veer sharply in one direction and off the runway. With a visibility of 6 km, they would have seen the runway a while back. The touch down point in a ILS is usually 1000 feet down from the threshold (captains bars), 2000 beyond that is 3000 foot down, still 5000 feet is plenty to stop the airplane with brakes and reverse thrust (probably only need about 2000 beyond that). Could be they got anxious landing a little long and put max breaking, not sure...

Check this landing video in Mangalore airport. Always when I had landed in Jet or AI it was rough since they haveto stop with a short braking lentgh

Can the planes land the other way and avoid the valley drop in case of overshoot? I think Logan Airport in Boston has the runway ending in the sea and has had a plane go into the sea in mid 80s.

No, same drop. Manglore should be for small planes.

I have seen 2-3 times planes half immersed in sea in old Hong Kong airport. Even new Airport approach is very tricky but runway is very big.

Quote:NEW DELHI: The horrific Air India Express crash in Mangalore on May 22 that killed 158 people could have possibly been averted had the expat commander heeded his Indian co-pilot's advice. Records of the conversation between the pilots and ATC has shown that co-pilot H S Ahluwalia more than once urged Captain Zlatko Glusica not to land and instead go around.

Importantly, Ahluwalia's warning had come well before the aircraft had descended below decision height - the critical level at or before which a final decision on whether to land or go around is to be taken - said highly placed sources. Ahluwalia, who was based in Mangalore and had landed there 66 times, voiced his concern when the aircraft was about 800 feet high, they added.
