NAVI MUMBAI: The direct descendants of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, who have long been bitter with the Indian government for not giving them their due, have now said that they will be suing to claim the Red Fort, which was the emperor's last main residence in India before he was exiled to then Burma.
"My mother Sultana Begum only gets a pension of Rs 400 a month from the Indian government for being associated with the Mughal dynasty. We surely deserve better," said the great-great-granddaughter of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Raunaque Zamani Begum, 34, who lives in a small, one-room apartment in Nerul's Sector 11 with her family.
Sultana Begum was married to the great-grandson of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Mirza Bedar Bakht, who died in Kolkata in 1980. The family also wants the pension paid to Sultana, who continues to live in Kolkata, to be increased. Raunaque said, "We, the children of Bedar Bakht, are now planning to legally fight to claim the Red Fort in Delhi, because that was the main residence of our ancestor Bahadur Shah Zafar."
Her 27-year-old sister, Zeenat Mahal Shaikh, who lives with her family at Mira Road, said, "The Mughals ruled India since the time of Babar. The Indian government should appreciate this fact, as it also concerns us. Even Zeenat's seven-year-old son Aman Abdul Shaikh knows who Bahadur Shah Zafar was. "He was my 'bade nana' (big granddaddy)," he answered coyly.
Raunaque's husband, Iqbal Nawab, is supporting the sisters. "We are identifying a lawyer to fight the case for the Red Fort and will file a court petition within this year. Many Indian kings who bowed down before the British are now very rich, but Bahadur Shah Zafar paid a huge price for standing up to the British in 1857," said Nawab, who is in the construction business but has run into losses.
Nawab pointed out that in 1857, during India's first war for independence, British forces arrested Bahadur Shah Zafar in Delhi and executed two of his sons. The 84-year-old Bahadur Shah was then exiled to Burma, where he died five years later. At the time, he had several wives, one of whom was Zeenat Mahal, who is the direct ancestor of Raunaque and her sister. Bahadur Shah's grave is in Yangon.
When asked if it would be an uphill task to claim the Red Fort, Raunaque reasoned, "If the government cannot give us our Red Fort, then at least compensate us properly.
In fact, we are only asking for one of the many properties of the Mughals." Nawab cited the recent example of the Raja of Mahmudabad, Mohammed Amir Mohammed Khan, who won back his royal properties after a long legal battle in Lucknow.
In 1980, when Bedar Bakht died, a question was put in parliament to the then minister of state for home affairs about whether the Indian government was aware who he was and if anything would be done for his family. The reply was that the government was aware and would continue the Rs 400 pension, which could be increased on sympathetic grounds if a request was made.
The last emperor's surviving son was Jawan Bakht and the latter's son was Jamshed Bakht. Eventually, Jamshed Bakht had two sons, Mirza Sikandar and Bedar Bakht. The latter married Sultana Begum.
"It was mainly due to the efforts of freedom fighters Maulana Azad and Subhash Chandra Bose that the British were forced to allow Bedar Bakht to return to India, but only on condition that he not publicise his Mughal roots. He settled in Kolkata, earning a monthly pension of Rs 10 in the 1920s. Later, his pension was increased to Rs 16. Now, only Rs 400 is being awarded to Sultana," said Nawab.
Raunaque recalled, "I remember my mother telling us the story of how my father Bedar Bakht was secretly brought back to India in 1925, hidden in a basket of flowers." Bedar and Sultana had six children, including one son who is now settled in Saudi Arabia.

MALDA: A 14-year-old girl has become a social outcast in her village here for refusing to stay with her 75-year-old husband, who she was forcibly married to. She and her brother, who helped her escape, are being hounded by their parents and the âhusbandâ.
Anaras Khatoon had filed a police complaint against parents Syed Ali and Latefun Biwi, saying that on September 26 they âwoke her up at night, put a knife to her throat and married her off to a man five times olderâ. Her parents had to surrender in a Malda court, but got bail the same day. Then, Anarasâ nightmare worsened.
Her parents filed counter cases against her and her brother Majedur Rahman, and drove away Majedurâs wife from home. Anarasâ âhusbandâ Chand Mohammed also moved court, accusing Majedur of kidnapping her.
Now, the brother and sister are living in fear. Majedur, who has started driving a rickshaw to make ends meet, cannot afford a lawyer. And local CPM leaders â from district secretary Jiban Maitra to minister for minority welfare Abdus Sattar â have washed their hands of the matter, saying itâs a âsocial problemâ and can be solved only by âsocial awakeningâ.
Speaking to TOI from her temporary shelter, a shabby hut on the outskirts of English Bazar, Anaras said: âI want to study and, of course, return to my home. But no one is helping me. What shall I do?â
Anaras was horrified when she learnt she was being married off to a man whose youngest child was older than her. Anarasâ father is a labourer under Chand and villagers say he took a âhefty sumâ from him for the marriage. The nikah was performed by Qaji Hossain as per Muslim rituals.
The very next day, Anaras escaped Chandâs house. She went straight to a police station and lodged a complaint that her parents had kidnapped her and married her off forcibly. After a dilly-dally of a few days, Malda SP D K Mondal initiated a case against Anarasâ father, Chand and a few others, including the qazi. Then, the tide turned against her.
Hounded by her parents, she and Majedur fled their home. A few friends â Rabiul Islam, Sk Mustafa, Sk Duku, Sk Ludu and Sk Sirajul â who supported her have also been accused of abduction by Anarasâ parents.

It's not because they don't have the financial wherewithal to do so;<b> it's because the 5,000-strong Muslim population of the village is under the near-total sway of retrograde maulvis whose edicts have barred the folk from any form of recreation.</b>

Says Raj Singh Chaudhary, a Karnal-based social worker: "When one family bought a TV set, it was severely ostracised."<b> What adds to the problem, he says, is the literacy rate at an abysmal 3%, with just one person reaching college. And since no one is even 10th pass, there's not a single person in the village employed with the government.</b>
Dilshad Ali, 20, would be seen as a villain in this village if his secret was out. For he has defied the maulvis' fatwa and took admission in BA second year. Asked whether he follows any other proclamation, he says: "I have to paste photographs on the admission form, have to read newspapers and I watch TV regularly whenever I am outside the village." How does he do all this? "I have to keep these things a secret," he says.
Eighteen year old Shadaqat Ali, who owns an STD/PCO outlet, says, Koran doesn't allow us to watch TV and listen to music in any form. On being asked who informed him about it, he says: "Maulvis have informed the entire village time and again and about TVâs ill-effects."
<b>Another woman, who refuses to be named, says: "The women folk aren't allowed to come out of their house. Many haven't travelled more than 25 km ever in their lives."</b>
<b>"My first outing as a child was to a hospital and ever since I have mostly gone to hospitals as do other women, most of whom are married at age 14-15." </b>
Maulana Ajmal Khan, the imam at Sector 20 Masjid, Chandigarh, says: "If you want a photograph clicked for the passport, or on the admission form, you can have it, since it's out of necessity. This post deals with what promotes secondary radicalization.
I view radicalization as primary and secondary.
Primary radicals are those that actively kill for an ideology or aid the killers by providing them with arms, shelter, food etc. The Koran/Hadiths/Mullahs generate primary radicals.
Secondary radicals are those that would never dream of becoming primary radicals themselves, but are engaged in keeping up their special status lifestyle.
Currently, as a result of various factors (Cultural destruction by muslim invaders/rulers, Jaichandism, generationally ingrained dhimmitude, designs of Christians like Lord Macaulay --it is highly improbable he would have done what he has if he was a British non-Christian--, Chinese influence, Nehru-Gandhi spinelessness and so on) a situation prevails in India whereby minorities are given special status. One can see this in reservations, in praising Islam / Christianity, in whitewashing their religion' inhumaneness, in suppressing evidence of their religions' inhumaneness, and so on). And Hindus are put down at every turn. Their religion is ridiculed in every which way. Gross liberties are taken with anything Hindu without batting an eyelid. NOthinh Hinhu is sacred, and if it is deemed sacred, it is only because it is politically expedient to consider it sacred.
The result of all this minority-pampering has been that minorities will do anything to preserve their special status. A muslim may drink Jim Beam at home, and not be averse to pork on the side (not that he has to do any such things, Islam allows him enough latitude to indulge himself *within* the bounds of the religion)--but, he will fight to be called a muslim. He will deny that Hindus are being oppressed by the government, though he very plainly sees it, and very much acknowledges it in his own mind. He dent that, say, the Taj Mahal was a Hindu structure, even when shown Shah Jahan's own admission that he had captured it and then "renovated" with Koranic inscriptions.
Why?
Because he, the muslim, does not want the majority to wake up.
That is his worst nightmare.
Once the majority wakes up, his special statues slowly gets taken from him, one entitlement at a time.
Therefore, anyone --Hindu, ex-Muslim, ex-Christian, Indophile-- who wants to educate Indians about the true story of India is a "Hindutavadi","Fascist" and what have you.
I have written about muslims, but all this applies to Christians as well.

Convict warns recurrence of blasts if 'Muslims are suppressed'
Coimbatore (PTI): A convict - sentenced for double life term in the 1998 serial blast cases - on wednesday warned that similar blasts were bound to happen again if the "voice of Muslims were suppressed".
Special Judge K Uthirapathi pronounced two life terms and over 50 years' imprisonment for various other charges to Saleem alias Salim Basha, who later told the Court that "by punishing Muslims, it would not achieve anything".
"Imam Ali and Ansari would be born again, if innocent Muslims are punished, for no fault of theirs," he said.
Incidents like these (blasts) were bound to happen again, if action was not taken against Sangh Parivar, Saleem cautioned.
The blasts during the visit of BJP leader L K Advani on February 14,1998, had claimed 58 lives. </span>

Muslim clerics and the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board have now a new cause to pursue - opposition to the mandatory registration of marriages as directed by the Supreme Court. The apex court ruled in favour of compulsory registration of marriages on February 14, 2006, and asked all States and Union Territories to make law in this regard.
The court's order is meant to protect the rights of women, including their right to inheritance and maintenance, and check practices like child marriage. However, 20 months after the court delivered this judgement, it has found that a majority of the States were yet to comply with its directions. While just five States have laws for compulsory registration of marriages, some others have made laws which make the registration of marriages optional for Muslims. Taking stock of the situation, the court has now issued a fresh directive and told all States and Union Territories to make registration of marriages mandatory within 90 days for all citizens irrespective of their religious affiliation.
However, despite this fresh directive, representatives of the AIMPLB say that registration of marriages should not be made mandatory for Muslims because Muslim marriages are solemnised only in the presence of witnesses and local qazis maintain registers of all marriage contracts. Hence, Muslim marriages need not be registered afresh under a state-made law. These arguments carry no weight. Have not members of the AIMPLB attended Hindu marriages? Often Hindu marriages are solemnised in the presence of thousands of witnesses and many Hindu sects, religious orders and temples maintain records of marriages solemnised in their premises or by their priests.
Similarly, Parsis, the tiniest religious minority in India, and Christians have a system by which marriages are registered in their places of worship. So, what is so special or unique about Muslims that they be exempt even from this innocuous rule requiring registration of marriages? And, if the Indian state feels so helpless that it would rather violate a judgement of the Supreme Court than make the AIMPLB see reason, are we to presume that it has lost the capacity to govern and enforce Article 14 of the Constitution, which ordains equality before law and the equal application of the laws?
The AIMPLB has made a habit of objecting to progressive law-making in the social sector. Every time an attempt is made to make a national law to promote the interests of women and children, there is a howl of protest from Muslim clerics and the AIMPLB. They did this in a big way when Mrs Indira Gandhi's Government introduced the Adoption of Children Bill in Parliament in 1972 to bring in a uniform law on adoptions.
The Government thought of this measure because under The Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956, only Hindus have the right to adopt children. However, Muslim clerics argued that adoption of children is prohibited in Islam and, therefore, the Government cannot make a law which gives all citizens, including Muslims, the right to adopt children. The AIMPLB was adamant. Its representative told a Joint Committee of Parliament that examined this Bill that though the Bill does not force anyone to adopt children, a common law on adoption applicable to all citizens would amount to "alluring" Muslims to take to adoption and thus violate their religious tenets.
Many scholars and politicians tried to reason with Muslim clerics to give up their objections. They said the proposed adoption law was only an enabling legislation. If adoption is "haram" in Islam, Muslims need not make use of the law and adopt children. Mr Tahir Mahmood, a noted authority on Islamic law, told the committee that he was of the view that adoption is not prohibited in Islam. "Islam is rather indifferent to adoption." Second, the Bill is not asking anyone to adopt children. "It is only a permissive piece of legislation." However, opinions like that of Mr Mahmood fell on deaf ears. The Government succumbed to the cacophonous protests from Muslim clerics and abandoned the Bill.
In the 1980s, Muslim clerics scuttled the Supreme Court's efforts to provide relief to divorced Muslim women. When the court held that such women were entitled to alimony under law made by Parliament, Muslims launched a nation-wide agitation and forced the Rajiv Gandhi Government to amend the law and thus upturn the court's judgement.
In recent times, Muslim clerics have even launched campaigns that have had an adverse impact on the health of Muslim children. While the Government is pumping in huge funds to educate parents across the country on the need for timely immunisation of children, Muslim clerics in Uttar Pradesh and some other parts of the country unleashed a vicious propaganda against the polio vaccine and advised Muslims not to allow healthcare workers to administer polio drops to their children. They spread the word that these drops would induce infertility and were actually meant to curtail the Muslim population! Thanks to this irresponsible conduct of Muslim clerics, 70 per cent of the polio victims in India in recent years are Muslim children, although Muslims constitute just 13.4 per cent of the population. There is no constitutional provision that exempts religious leaders from responsible conduct. The state must get this message across to religious leaders who raise demands and issue injunctions that are injurious to public order and health.
The latest manifestation of the maladjustment of Muslim clerics to a secular, democratic environment is their opposition to the registration of marriages. And while doing so, they are even ready to take on the Supreme Court. Sadly, this mischief is being abetted by the state. It now appears as if pseudo-secularism is a national creed and the Indian state has begun to practice it as if it were constitutionally ordained. How else is one to interpret the response of many States to the Supreme Court's order?
If the State feels that it does not have the power to bring in and enforce even such an innocuous law; if in the face of protests from a few Muslim clerics, it feels so enfeebled that it disobeys the Supreme Court, we must conclude that the Indian state lacks the motivation to preserve the secular, democratic environment. If this be so, India's unity and integrity will be in peril in the near future and the current generation of politicians will have to take the blame for undoing the idea of a united, secular, democratic India.

The serial bombings in UP have an ominous message: Courts trying terrorists will now be under attack
At least 14 people were killed in seven well-synchronised explosions near court premises in three cities of Uttar Pradesh -- Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad -- on November 23. The explosions took place within about five minutes of each other. The improvised explosive devices, attached to bicycles, do not appear to have been of a sophisticated kind.
Initial reports indicated the possible use of ammonium nitrate, which has been increasingly used in different terrorist incidents in many parts of the world since the explosion in the New York World Trade Centre in February 1993. But the synchronisation of the blasts in three different cities around the same time indicate a certain sophistication in planning and execution.
We have had well-synchronised multiple explosions in Mumbai in March 1993 by the mafia gang of Dawood Ibrahim and in July, 2006, allegedly by Lashkar-e-Tayyeba, and in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu in February 1998 by Al Ummah.
But we have not had well-synchronised multiple blasts in different cities since 1993, when the Students' Islamic Movement of India carried out synchronised explosions in different trains. But its synchronisation was not of a high order. The Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh carried out nearly 400 synchronised blasts all over Bangladesh in August 2005.
<b>Though 13 people, mostly lawyers, were killed, causing mass casualties does not appear to have been the objective.</b> As in the case of the 400 blasts in Bangladesh, which caused not more than 10 fatalities, the purpose seems to have been to intimidate and demonstrate the reach and capability of the perpetrators. The explosions were synchronised to take place after the Friday prayers. Jihadi organisations prefer to organise their terrorist strikes on Fridays.

The Uttar Pradesh explosions have come in the wake of the judgements delivered recently in respect of the Mumbai serial bombings of March 1993 and the Coimbatore serial blasts of February 1998. In both the cases, a number of terrorists have been found guilty and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. These have also come after the arrest of three suspected members of Jaish-e-Mohammed in Uttar Pradesh. These jihadis were alleged to have planned to kidnap a dignitary in order to secure the release of Mohammed Afzal, who has been sentenced to death for his role in the attack on Parliament in December 2001. His mercy petition is under examination by the Government.
The arrested JeM terrorists were alleged to have been beaten up by some lawyers when they were brought to court. The local lawyers have also reportedly refused to defend terrorists in future.<b> It is likely that the explosions were meant to intimidate the criminal justice community, particularly the lawyers</b>.
It has been reported that an e-mail message purported to be from 'Indian Mujahideen' received by some television channels before the explosions indicated that these bombings were about to take place. However, it referred to explosions in two and not three cities. 'Indian Mujahideen' does not refer to any organisation; it refers to Indian Muslims in general and says that the latter have decided to take the offensive and wage jihad.
In justification of this decision, it refers to the penalties awarded to the accused in the Mumbai blasts of March 1993. It also refers to the post-Godhra Gujarat violence in 2002 and the recent assault on arrested JeM suspects by lawyers.
<b>The message is not only a warning of their intention to act, but also an explanation of why Indian Muslims have decided to act. </b>The main point, which <b>the sender of the message has sought to convey, is that the criminal justice system treats Muslims 'severely', but is 'lenient' towards Hindus.</b> The language used is typically Indian, the context and arguments used are typically of Indian Muslims and the issues raised are those which have been agitating the minds of a section of Indian Muslims (such as the demolition of Babri Masjid in December 1992).
It admits that Muslims were responsible for the explosions in Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai and at a restaurant and park in Hyderabad, but says they were not responsible for the blasts in Malegaon in September 2006, in the Samjauta Express and the Mecca Masjid of Hyderabad this year. It is silent on the recent blast in the Ajmer Sharif, a Muslim holy place famous for its tolerant Sufi tradition.
It says that Indian Muslims have decided to wage a jihad for Islamic rule and talks of a "war for civilisation". It warns that their next target will be police officers. Keeping in view that the 15th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid is just a fortnight away, we should be alert to the possibility of more explosions in the days to come, possibly directed against the police.

It was founded in the year 1977. Not by a religious leader, but by an
English-educated academic, Mohammed Ahamadullah Siddiqui. <b>He was a
professor not at some Alighar University in India, or in Islamabad, but at
Western Illinois University in the US, a country of free thought that claims
to melt people of diverse ideas into a wholesome one</b>. He was professor of
Journalism and Public Relations. For which goals did the professor found it?
Leave the first two goals. Its third goal is `Jehad' for the cause of Islam.
Since Jehad is also a programme for self-purification of the
adherents, one may assume that this is not to harm others. But read more. It does not believe in nation-state or in national constitutions. Loyal to no nation, it
disregards the very nation it operates in. Not just that. <b>It is explicitly against
Hinduism and other anti-Islamic cultures. More. It regards idol
worship as a `sin' - meaning that Hindus are sinners. Not yet full stop. Goes further, considers terminating idol worship as a Holy duty</b>!
Significantly, it is founded not for, nor in, Saudi Arabia, where
there are no idols, no idol worshippers. It is founded for, and functions in, India
with more than 85 percent of population believing, worshipping idols. It
would like them eliminated. Is it just an extremist body, which seeks to achieve
its ends by intense, and extended preaching, or conversions? No. It does not just
verbalise, but, as evidence available in the public domain establishes,
actually weaponises terror. It openly celebrates Osama Bin Laden as a true
Mujahid (religious soldier) in Jehad (religious war) for the `Umma' (world
Muslim community). Its name: SIMI, the Students Islamic Movement of India,
India's first home grown, pan-Indian, terrorist body.
Last April, SIMI completed three decades of existence. It is said to
have 400 full-timers and 20000 casuals. Its members retire at 30. SIMI thus
means youth in their primes for terror. What is its scoreboard in terror? Even
before the Mumbai blasts, between August 2000 - when its maiden blast in
Sabarmati train took place - and July 2006, it had accomplished five bomb blasts to
its credit! But its peaking success was in Mumbai, on that fateful evening on
7/11, when it bombed and eliminated some 200 innocents and hospitalised over 700 in just 25 minutes! Apart from detonating bombs, it has other deadly skills too.
Between March 2001 and January 2004 it triggered Hindu-Muslim riots in
three places. SIMI cadres also massacred five policemen and an Additional
District Magistrate in Kanpur - a clear war against the state! SIMI has other
deadly hobbies, like procuring, moving, storing arms, ammunitions, explosives
like RDX, etc. In some eight incidents reported in the media, SIMI cadres
were found in possession of explosives, weapons and papers incriminating them in
violence in different parts of India, from Bengal to Gujarat.
It has global links. Anwar Ali, a lecturer in National Defence Academy at
Khadakvasala in Maharashtra - yes, in the defence academy to train
soldiers to provide security to the people of India - was found to be a SIMI activist!
Found involved in Mulund bomb blasts in April 2003, he was arrested!
Involved with him in the Mulund blast was a life convict, convicted for terror,
whose sentence was reduced by the Supreme Court to ten years, released from
Sabarmati jail.
Founded by a US-based professor, SIMI attracts academics in defence
institutes to unrepentant life convicts for its agenda to kill. <b>However, SIMI,
whose ban was overdue, was banned only after the 9/11 terror on the US. Till
then, even the NDA government had no guts to ban SIMI. Why?</b>
SIMI had gathered high political clout. <b>It has assumed different
labels like National Democratic Front, Islamic Youth Centre, Tamil Muslim Munnetra
Kazhagam (TMMK) and forged close links with the `secular' political spectrum from
Mulayam's Samajwadi Party to Sonia's Congress Party</b>.
Result, not just Mulayam but even his political adversary Sonia too,
is among its admirers, being expectants for Muslim votes. In her speech in
Parliament in March 2002, and later in June 2002, Sonia attacked the NDA government for banning SIMI. Earlier, in September 2001 itself, her party had opposed the ban.
Thanks to Sonia's defence, the Congress-led UPA government had to
allow the ban to lapse in September 2005. But soon it had to eat its words,
re-impose the ban in February 2006. Thus it allowed the terror outfit free run for five months!
Now the Sonia Congress-led Maharashtra government has admitted that it
is SIMI that masterminded the July train blast in Mumbai. It has arrested over
200 SIMI activists! Yet, it was the Sonia-chosen president of the UP Congress
Party, Salman Kurshid, who was SIMI's advocate in courts pleading for lifting
its ban.
<b>It was Sonia herself who was the advocate for SIMI in Parliament.</b>
Fortunately, the Supreme Court rejected Salman Kurshid's pleas in June
2006 and Manmohan Singh government rejected the pleas of Sonia and re-imposed
the ban in February 2006! Thus, despite Sonia in Parliament, Salman in courts,
thanks to the Supreme Court, SIMI, India's high security risk, has been exposed as a terror outfit.
