<b>The problem has to be dealt with by all the countries in the region, which have the necessary means at their disposal to provide necessary equipment and resources for the job. India has a stake in maintaining the security of the area as its trade with East Asia passes through this area. Moreover, the area is very close to some of the Indian islands in the Andaman Sea.
In recent years there has been some effort by the US Navy and that of India, Indonesia and Malaysia to police the zone. However, it has not been very successful as there has been no effective joint effort to put an end to this problem. Most of the time the pirates, just flee inside the territorial or economic zone of some country to prevent getting arrested on the high sea. The time has come when the littoral states should take a more serious look into the issue and get an effective security system in place.</b>
