Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad stepped down from the Congress presidency in 1946, and everyone was convinced that Sardar Patel should replace him during the crucial transition period.

9 out of 10 provincial congress bodies supported Sardar Patel, 1 (UP) supported Acharya Narendra Kriplani, none supported Nehru. Kriplani stepped down supporting Nehru which meant only 1 vote.

But Gandhiji vetoed Sardar Patel getting elected, and Sardar Patel gave way to Nehru for the respect of Gandhiji.

Does that not speak something too for Gandhiji's respect for democracy?
