What is sacred and what is secular? We are living through times when 'secular' statues are sought to be made sacred. The governments may run out of policemen and policewomen if every statue of every political shade has to be 'watched'.
Why this sudden spate of seemingly orchestrated attacks on Hindu institutions? Is it secular only to attack what the Hindu tradition holds sacred? If the intent is to promote EVR's atheism as state religion, why restrict the choice of locations for EVR statue only in front of institutions related to Hindu religion?
The medium of choice for bharatiya politicians is to unveil statues. Idolatry! Why is it that the islamists are not getting concerned at the emergence of this new form of kufr? New bhakta of new secular (sic) idols.
OK, naastikavaadam says no, no to worship of idols. OK, pagans worship idols. Do they really worship idols? Is a worshipper in a mandiram worshipping stone? What is the metaphor of a murti of a divinity in Hindu tradition? Is a murti an evocation of the divinity in everyone and an aspect of the paramaatman to be internalised as the aatman seeks out unity with the paramaatman? Or, is it too complicated, too deep for tears?
What is the metaphor sought to bedenoted by a EVR statue? Or, for that matter, statue of any politician, dead or alive?
How about the politico's who are creating new idols in every street corner? Are they not creating a new religion with a new set of murti-s to be adored, to be venerated? Are they truly atheists?
The key issues are these: a plot of land was given to some group to set up a statue for EVR. Why was this particular land close to the Rajagopuram of Srirangam chosen? Why not locate EVR statue elsewhere? The case is subjudice; Madurai High Court has imposed an injunction on the Trichy Corporation or Srirangam Municipality unveiling the EVR statue until the Government permission is granted. Hopefully, there is rule of law in the land and the majesty of the law as an aspect of sanatana dharma should prevail. Let the courts decide on what the law is.
Maybe, it is too much to hope for in a state where the police slaps an FIR against a venerated Guru, Swami Dayananda Saraswati. Another Swami, Subramanya Swami says that such an FIR is illegal according to the Supreme Court judgements. When police do not respect the law, when the fence eats away the field, who will protect the crop, both the sacred and the secular?
Hindu who venerate Hindu institutions are searching for a medium to make their sentiments respected and their voices heard. Is this too much to ask even in a secular democracy? Of course, secular means 'pantha nirapekshataa' (in Hindi translation of the preamble of the Constitution). What pray is pantha?
