The death of 15 persons by police firing this week in Nandigram in West Bengal has opened up a new source for political agitation, not only in that area but in the whole of West Bengal. Its effects can be heard both inside and outside Parliament.-Since, it has happened in an area which reportedly has a high concentration of Muslims, some of the political parties have become extra active in getting involved in the political activities that have followed this police action, so that they can make significant gain in improving their vote bank. In the process the real issue behind this unfortunate incident may get out of sight.
However, it also marks the first major opposition to the CPM in the whole of West Bengal. The general strike of Friday 16th March indicated the extent of peopleâs support in condemning the action of the CPM led government. If the political parties can sustain the momentum of this anger of the common people against the present State Government, it may have a profound impact on the future of the present State Government and also in the continued unity among the Left Front partners in that State.
