Bhopal: Noted Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has rebuffed Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's remarks that his family was instrumental in creation of her nation and said it was the result of an internal people's movement.
"Nobody can decide to divide a country. It was a result of an internal people's movement that resulted due to oppression of (the then) East Pakistan residents by West Pakistan lords," Nasreen told reporters here.
Hoping that "true democracy" returns to Bangladesh, the exiled writer said though it was the ultimate answer to people's woes, elections can be managed by "fundamentalist" forces with money and muscle power as people were poor and ignorant.
She said her chances to return to Bangladesh were slim but she will continue her fight till her death.
Nasreen, a citizen of Sweden, said she did not like to live in that country as she felt that she was an "outsider". "It is my dream to stay in India. I will apply for the citizenship again."
She condemned a fatwa issued against Pakistan Tourism Minister Nilofer Bakhtiyar for reportedly embracing a male during an adventure sports event in Paris.
(Wow. What's up with that?)
To a query, she claimed to be proud of Bangladeshi cricket team as it defeated stronger opponents (India and South Africa) during the ongoing World Cup.
