Mayawati's success in gathering a chunk of Muslim votes, despite her denouncement of the Muslim's fundamentalist leadership, is an eye-opener for the political pundits. The major gain she made in Muslim-dominated Rohelkhand is a pointer to the Muslim support to the BSPO. Clearly, the Muslims voted on tactical lines in pockets to keep the BJP in check, once they realised the upper case were also voting for her and the BSP was the best suited to prevent the rise of the BJP.
When she begun to make overtures to the Brahmins a year ago, people took her new politics with a pinch of salt. But she was willing to take a calculated risk to win. In this the SP, the BJP and the Congress have miserably failed as they were touching just the fading caste and communal aspirations, not the real aspirations of the citizens.
