Narendra Modi will become the longest serving Chief Minister of Gujarat on June 1, 2007 when he completes 2063 days in office. Modi, who took charge of the State on October 7, 2001, will overtake the record of late Hitendra Desai who ruled the State for 2062 days.
Established in 1960, the State has seen 14 Chief Ministers in its 47 years of existence.
Modi who took charge of the State from Keshubhai Patel about eight months after the earthquake hit Kutch and other parts of the State on January 26, 2001 initiated various developmental schemes that bear his distinctive stamp.
Quintessentially a party man, who had never held any position in the Government or contested any election for a public post before he was catapulted to the post of Chief Minister, Modi initiated the 'panchamrut' principle of development which entailed concentrating on industrial, agricultural, economic and social infrastructure sector and aimed at harnessing the power of these five elements for comprehensive growth of the State.Â
