<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Advani alleged that the Congress president had devalued the office of the Prime Minister by hand-picking a person who exercised no authority of his own. "And now the highest office of the nation, the office of the Custodian of the Constitution, is sought to be similarly devalued," he pointed out.
"All of you remember that, we in the BJP and the NDA went to Rashtrapati Bhawan on several occasions seeking action against "tainted Ministers" in the UPA Government. But what if Rashtrapati Bhawan itself gets a tainted occupant? This is a question which the entire nation must seriously ponder over," he said.
Vajpayee demanded a public apology from the Central Ministers who condemned President APJ Abdul Kalam for his desire to contest election again.
"<b>The condemnation of Kalam by the Ministers is a condemnable act. The Government should publicly denounce the conduct of these Ministers,"</b> he said in his address to the national executive of the BJP.
<b>"These Ministers should also apologise to Kalam," party spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy quoted Vajpayee as saying at the end of the two-day national executive meet of the party here.</b>
The senior BJP leader also took on the CPI which opposed nomination of Shivraj Patil on the ground that <b>he as Speaker of the Lok Sabha had allegedly shown 'soft attitude' toward the BJP in the House</b>.
Vajpayee demanded "an explanation" from the ruling party for "not making any effort to arrive at a consensus candidate."
"The NDA had supported Kalam after evolving a consensus for him. But this time, the Congress only made a telephone call to seek support for a candidate which it had already decided. That cannot be called a consensus candidate," Vajpayee said, adding the Government will have to give an explanation
