Goa tourist spot was on terror hit list: Police

A popular night spot on the Baga-Calangute coast that attracts thousands of young party goers had been zeroed in for a strike by terror suspects Riyazuddin Naser and Asadullah Abubaker who are in the custody of the Karnataka police.
âThey were looking for a crowded tourist place where they could do the most damage and had zeroed in on a night spot in North Goa,â Inspector General of Police Kishen Kumar told Deccan Herald.
A team of Goa Police dispatched to Karnataka has learnt from interrogations that Naser and Abubaker made three trips to Goa in October and November last year. They travelled here twice on a motorcycle to survey possible target locations in North and South Goa, and returned to Karnataka the same day. On the third occasion, they travelled by bus and spent a night in a lodge in Panaji which did not even record their stay. âThey wanted to strike around New Yearâs eve when Goa is packed with tourists,â Kumar said, underscoring the fact that with over 20 lakh holidayers a year, Goa was a âsoft targetâ for a terror strike.
<b>One attack would set the tourism industry back by 10 years, the IG said stressing the fact that tourism industry had an equal responsibility in improving security measures and co-operating with the police in keeping a proper register of guests and tenant verification.</b>
Senior police officials have identified the crowded beaches of Baga, Calangute, Colva, Arambol, Mira Mar, the offshore casinos and the increasingly popular night markets as soft targets. <b>The night market at Arpora attracts thousands of tourists every Saturday. Yet the spot has a narrow approach road and almost no parking space to speak of. Political patronage allows the market to carry on with little concern for public safety, police said.</b>
<b>Brain mapping test for terror suspects</b>

<b>Terror suspects Mohammed Ghouse alias Riyazuddin Nasir and Asadullah Abubaker were subjected to a brain mapping test on Thursday.
The two ere put to tests at the Bangalore Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).</b>
Before being driven to FSL at Madiwala, the two suspects were taken to Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology.
For nearly two hours, doctors examined the two and gave the green signal to put them under the scanner. However, the two will undergo narco analysis on Friday at the Bowring hospital.
Based on the outcome, the truth serum tests might be extended by a day or two.
<b>A senior CoD officer told Deccan Herald that the questions they had prepared and the outcome of the tests are encouraging.
âWe need to wait and gather more facts, especially with regard to the money and arms flow to the terrorist organisations. A lot depends on the narco tests,â the officer said.</b>
