Akbar was quite older when he came up with this changes. His successor Salim was raised as a bigot and a drunkard. He got married to Noor Jehan who brought the Periso-Turkish elite into the court to supplant the Rajputs. This elite was not only religious fanatics but also parochial. This brought the foreign faction itnto the Mughal court that has led the the mess of TSP. Aurnagazeb is the son of Mumtaz Mahal who was niece of Noor Jehan. The mullah types also encouraged Aurangazeb to takeover from Dara Shikoh the heir apparent and he owed them big time for conferring legitimacy. Shah Jehan was ready to declare himself as the heir to the Caliph and was overcome with grief when one of his children died. And in that short period the war for succession broke out.
