Due to drunkeness Salim was turned away from home so no control by his mother. I suspect that he got a lot of Islamic education to wean him from his habits.
The mullahs and courtiers have to listen to the Shahenshah while privately they may have other feelings. Remember per WW Hunter, Akbar controlled 2/3 of the territory that the Brits controlled in 1900. And his revenue was over 2 times the British revenue in 1900. And that ignores the price of silver in 1600 was much more lower due to inflation. So thats a lot of financial clout. And he had a very large military force.
However long term effects were quite negligble religion wise. Shaik Ahmed Sirhindi arose and successfully pulled the Sultanate from its syncretic path.
